- In my sewing room this week I have made some very varied items! My first ever Love Notions PDF pattern - The Juliet Blouse, some PJ bottoms and a Sorrento Bucket Hat plus a self drafted phone bag. All in all- a good week!

Hi Carole! And a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you!! I hope you're enjoying your holiday and making it a memorable time. Your intro was just fine but then I think anything you do is fine with me. I also think it's great that you use the same pattern over & over because it works for you -- and it's still a new look each time because of different fabric and then sometimes you tweak the pattern a bit. It's all good! Congratulations on acheiving 5K in subscribers. That's great! I don't mind working from PDF patterns that I've put together. It's extra work for me but it has been okay...so far. Aaaaaahhhh, come back to Dorset...don't tempt me! LOLOLOLOL... I use my kitchen nook table to tape my PDF together. It takes me HOURS (literally!) to finish the job but so far, so good.
I have been working away in my sewing nook this week-end. Today I finished my Laundry Day Tee (a PDF pattern from Love Notions); and I worked on several hemming jobs that have been waiting very patiently for quite a while to get done. Tomorrow I plan to work on my class projects -- I'm making a top in one class and would like to get some work done on that before next class time AND I'm making a jacket in the other class and I need to finish chalking the pattern on the exterior of the jacket that I'll be sewing. It's a quilted jacket. I plan to get quite a lot done in my sewing nook over this Memorial Day holiday 3-day week-end.
I don't know how I missed this video but congratulations, Carole, on 5K. Your videos are always a favorite of mine ever since your first one. Love the idea of the fabric ties and all your lovely makes. When I lived in England in the early '70's, we once stayed in a caravan park at Alton Towers before it was an amusement park, and it was walled in with giant walls of rhododendrons. I've never forgotten how enormous and beautiful they were. I'm sure they didn't survive the change of venue.

Funny you should say about Alton Towers. We used to go there when we lived in 'The Midlands' from 1995-2000. I do remember there being wonderful gardens dotted around the rides so actually, those rhododendrons may still be there. I had no idea what it was before it became the theme park, thanks for telling me that.

I moved to the village of Alton as a newlywed in the summer of 1970. My in-laws had a freehold pub called The Bull's Head and we lived in their newly build house on the side of the hill for a couple of years, which looked out over a river and valley with the towers on the hill beyond. Quite a magical view for a 22 yr old from LA. When the house was sold, we tried living in a caravan at the towers caravan park with a toddler which proved to be a bad idea. We ended up living in the pub for a while. Ancient history!
I forgot the best part... there is supposed to be a tunnel from the pub to the towers from Cromwell's time.

You probably don't have an issue putting them together because you don't have an ancient old printer like ours that takes two sheets at a time whenever it fancies 😂. Have a fun holiday! You'll need a rest when you get home. 😅 I just printed and put together a pattern the other day and I hated every darn minute of it. That particular one matched up fairly well but I've had many times where things didn't line up correctly and it wasn't my printer's fault. I hate using up all that paper. The tissue of big 4 is so much easier to store and use. Off my rant. Finally, I commend you and thank you for reusing patterns. It's so much more cost effective! And when you show your makes, they all look so different; it's very inspiring. That hat and phone bag are adorable!
Thank you Diane! I will indeed need a holiday and luckily a couple of weeks after I return we are heading down to the holiday home! I love that you say you hated printing the pattern, so many people seem to love it. As you say, the tissue paper is so easy to cut and store that is why I really hate PDFs and I tried some lighter weight paper in the printer. That was most likely my mistake!

Congratulations on reaching 5k very well deserved. The love notions top is lovely. I think most people who print pdf patterns realise that they don’t always fit correctly you have to cut one part then fit the other part of the pattern not always ideal but manageable. Have a lovely holiday. 😊

Make sure you alway have the printer on "actual" size and you are using the British paper size.
Thanks Kathy! I see you have changed your UA-cam name, so lovely to see your face again. Don't worry I did print actual size ( I have made that mistake too many times in the past) and also A4. My issue was I used an ancient old printer and much lighter weight paper that it obviously couldn't cope with! Thanks for watching and hope you are well 🧵😊
New Look 6216 is a favorite of mine I love the top and the pants. I have multiple versions of both in a variety of fabrics. I have also made the top into a dress a couple of times though one of the dresses wasn't in quality fabric and eventually fell apart with how often I wore it. The pants are a go to for me because I don't have to make any fit adjustments I just change the leg style. I've made anything from jogger style to flares and I love them all. My favorite feature with the pants is the pocket, I love how big the pockets are and the construction is so easy. Nothing better than a TNT pattern. I've used mine so much I'm probably going to order another.
I am so glad you think 6216 is a good pattern as well. Because of its simplicity as you say, you can tweak the pattern or use different fabrics and it looks different every time. I had never thought of turning that top into a dress though, well done for doing that! I have also made those trousers in the past and been so pleased with them. Lovely tops. The Juliet turned out beautiful! I have made a lot of Love Notion fabrics as I have a very full bust. I have never had them fit together like that. I make sure the print to actual size is set on me printer. The printer setting comes up as ‘fit to paper’ as the default setting. But mostly lately I send it off to PDF plotting.
Thanks so much for your comment. I did set it for actual size but I actually think the problem was the paper. I did buy some lightweight 60gsm paper and as the printer is old I think it took a couple of pieces at a time every now and again! I am certainly going to try and send off a pattern to be printed now so many people have recommended a printer. Have a great weekend 🧵😊

Pretty LN top - how you managed pintucks in such a stretchy fabric is beyond me. I'd take out those gathers too. Perfect for vacation. And the Piglet shorts are adorable. You've reminded me that sewing doesn't have to be clothing for family, it can be hats and purses and all manner of other things.

It is funny but those gathers were the one thing I didn't like in that pattern and they disappeared 😂. The best outcome for a sewing failure ever! Honestly G & G, well their fabrics are outstanding, I don't often order from them but I am always so pleased when I do. I am excited for my birthday tomorrow as I have found a 5 mile walk in an area we have never been to before, I know, I am so weird aren't I. Hurray, more than 5000 subscribers! I love the New Look colour block top. That’s a great pattern and I use it often too but I always have to cut the back one size smaller than the front, otherwise it’s too baggy. I must try your version. It looks great!

I want to make the Love Notions Rhapsody blouse and the Metra blazer because I've seen so many great versions of them but so far I've only put one small PDF pattern together and don't look forward to all the work! I don't mind trimming a Big 4 pattern and I enjoy jigsaw puzzles, which so many people have likened to a PDF, but they take up a lot of room to lay out and tape. Your top turned out so well! Every summer I have to get used to my arms all over again (and legs, too) but after a couple of weeks I'm ok 😁. The bucket hat is adorable and looks very nice on Mickey Mouse! Good idea to sort the interfacing. I enjoyed your "enchanted forest" walk!

I think some people must have enormously long dining tables to be able to lay out and stick these patterns, I have to do it in stages!

Hi Carole, I think I’m one of the “sick” people who actually don’t mind printing and taping PDF patterns together. My printer behaves well so that does make it easier. If your printer is taking two sheets, perhaps if you printed in smaller batches- say 10 pgs at a time it might behave better. More work I realize but….?! I just printed out the Juliet top for myself….yours is absolutely gorgeous both the fit and the fabric choice.🤩. Fingers crossed I will have a win with my top.

Re printing patterns - I noticed that if I print 5 pages at a time, it works better. With many pages, sometimes things get distorted due to the way paper is pulled into printers

A couple of people have said to me about batch printing and that could well be the problem with our ancient printer. Plus I used really lightweight paper which I forgot to mention, 60gsm.

@socarole66 still few weeks of school left. Alice had 1st week of May off. We are slowly getting better. Finished my antibiotics yesterday. Check up and some tests throughout the week, so hopefully, it's the end of this annoying infection.

@socarole66 it was close to Easter break. It alternates, sometimes they have 1 week off in Feb, sometimes in May and sometimes in June. They finish for summer on the 30th of June, so a month earlier.
It knocked us down. 3 rounds of antibiotics, steroids, and other meds + chest xrays and, in my case, also visit to cardiologist (end of this week). Hopefully, it's the end of it :)

@socarole66 lol. You didn't much like the fabric stores in Ontario Canada, so I doubt you will want to move close to me. Although I'm not far from the border to the USA, so maybe that would sway you.
I know if I'm in a hurry or already frustrated though, I don't enjoy the process as much as if I'm relaxed and have lots of time. So that does make a difference. I imagine embracing the process is much the same. I think of it as putting a big puzzle together, and it's much more fun then.
I like the new intro 😊. Stop being sorry for using the same pattern; I think it’s awesome. You may use the same pattern, but you design as it’s a new pattern. TNT’s are fantastic ❤. Why continue buying patterns when we have patterns. I’ve decided to do as you do, use my TNT rather than take a chance on a new, say T-shirt pattern when I have one and all I have to do is say color block as you’ve done. It’s great. Keep doing what you’re doing. Love your channel.

Congratulations on 5,000 subscribers! Your makes are great! I don't know, of course, but maybe you printed the Love Notions pattern using whatever we call our paper size instead of the A4 of stuff in Britain. I once did the opposite and spent a while staring at a pile of paper. I find grandchildren to be exhausting. They are so busy and I must have been really energetic when we had young kids.
Oh that printing! There are a couple of reasons it didn't work for me and entirely of my making. Our printer is over 10 years old and I used much lighter weight paper than normal. It must have printed in the right size range as the top fitted well and I did set it for A 4 paper. I got there in the end but I did put it off for days after discovering the issues 🤣. I know what you mean about Grandchildren being exhausting both physically and mentally. My two don't stop talking!! Ah well, before long they won't even want to see me so I will cherish these moments. Thanks for watching and your comment 🧵😊
HI Re the printer and the paper, if something sticks in the paper, your whole project is printed incorrectly, so I often do 4 pages at a time, and check them. Takes longer at first but so much less time in the end. I also save all my printed music for orchestra that I will no longer need, and print on the back so that I am not using up new paper. Thanks Nancy, you aren't the first person to say about printing in batches and I hadn't ever thought of that Because it is an old printer it struggled with the lighter weight paper.
Our orchestra plays the same music every few years so I keep mine all filed away 😂. I hate having to reprint if I know we have done it before! Definitely a good idea to reuse your paper though, I am all for that.

When I make a Love Notions pattern I like to watch Karina from Liftin Pins and Needles first. She take you through all the tricky parts and make sewing up the pattern really easy. Such pretty fabrics from Minerva, I can't wait to see them all made up. This week I've been finishing up some smocked dressed for my youngest granddaughters. I've also been working on New Look 6501. I sewed the dress for the 18 month old and was able to fix the strap that I sewed on wonky. I sewed the shorts version for the 6 month old. I don't know where my brain was this week, but when I made the button hole I put it on the wrong side of the placket. Oops. I ended up sewing a button behind the now decorative button and it buttons from the back. I've seen patterns where they do this where they don't want to have any buttons showing on the front. They are both finished and maybe this week I will pay better attention when I am sewing. Enjoy your vacation.

I have just looked up 6501 and that looks a CUTE pattern! I would love to make something like that for my Granddaughter but I get the feeling they aren't keen on me doing that sadly. Have fun making things up for yours!

@@socarole66 I haven’t made the Tinley shorts yet, but I’ve made the Largo cargoes three times now and love them, also the duster length Boyfried cardigan, the Metra blazer three times and the Tidal dress a couple of times. Have also made the Resolution bottoms and the Sunday romper in the long length. Can heartily recommend these patterns. Have also made the Dockside polo and Tailgate sweatshirts for my husband and he loves them. I’m planning a Rhapsody blouse in silk charmeuse, but need to toile in viscose first. Happy sewing 🚴♀️🐝x

Carol, you get so much accomplished in a week and you kit 5K! Congratulations! It is an accomplishment and validates that what you spend so much of your time on is sought after and your viewers love it. You could sell those Mini Mouse bucket hats/phone case. Absolutely adorable. I'm sorry you had issues with the pdf. Love Notions, normally are the easiest and quickest pdf's to put together. But the end result is beautiful. Oh and I think the top you're wearing is one of my favorites of your makes. That blue is so lovely and the 2 fabrics together are striking. Have fun next week.
Thank you so much for all your lovely kind words! The PDF printing issue was a culmination of things really. My old printer, the fact that I printed so many pages at once and I used really light paper (60gsm) to make it easier to work with. Ah well, I got there in the end and I loved the end result! Thanks also for the comment on my blue T shirt, I would so love to make another one but I am not sure I would do as good a job fabric matching as I did that time. I love a good basic pattern too and use them as the basis for hacking. Really feel I got my money's worth with them. Great makes as always. Nice to see useful creative sewing too. The hat and travel bag are great for all kinds of adventures. I have quite a few Love Notions patterns now and they have become favorites including the Juliet which I also made for our holiday. I am impressed with the bra strap coverage on the sleeveless version. Thanks for showing off the beautiful flowers.
You are right Nancy, basic pattern are perfect for hacking aren't they, perhaps I shouldn't apologise every time I hold one up! With PDF printing, there is sometimes an issue with HP printers. Also, there may be lines for A4 paper and Letter (US) size, so you can turn off which one you don't want. You can also turn off the layers for the sizes you don't want to use, and that eliminates some of the confusion. I didn't have any issues with printing and I have used PDF patterns for ages, but I now send them off for printing A0 size to CLC Essex - much less stressful. Again, they can print the sizes you want rather than every size on the file.
Thanks so much for your comment. So many people have recommended CLC so I am certainly going to give them a try next time. I didn't put layers in the pattern as I was unsure what size or view to make for my first ever L N garment hence I printed them all. I do have a very old HP printer and you are the second person to mention that may be the issue. I was so pleased with the pattern though and I will definitely make another. Have a great weekend 🧵😊

There’s a place near me called Rhododendron Mile, it’s literally a whole mile and on either side packed with Rhody’s, I’ll have to see if I can get there and take a photo, not been down there for sone years now, thank you for reminding me of the stunning flowers this time of year were so lucky to have.

I love the island of Mallorca. My son moved there from the US, and I visited at Christmas. It is absolutely beautiful. Palma was wonderful. I visited the Cathedral and Royal Palace. the coastline is unbelievable. Also, I went to a fabric shop, Ribes and Casals. If you get a chance, it is a great fabric store.

Oh Judith!! Ribes and Casals is amazing! I went there last year when I visited Mallorca with my husband. It was the smartest fabric shop I have ever been in. Sadly as I am with my daughter and neither of us are brave enough to drive abroad there will be no Palma trips for me this time. Just a week in a hotel!! Your son is so lucky to have moved there. It really is such a pretty island, very misunderstood in the UK as a beach destination. However the scenery is stunning in the North yet most tourists never visit there. As you say, Palma is just a fantastic city as well with so much history. If you check out my Friday sews from 16th June last year you will see Palma and the shop!

You are a genius!! I have made a hundred PJ bottoms. I have made PJ bottoms even when I wasn't sewing. I struggle to make the back. I have done it all. EXCEPT putting a button on the front!!! .....pure genius.

I only use print at home pdf when it is just a few pages. Otherwise I send it off. My time is worth a few dollars. Your top turned out really cute. Your arms look great. I have an enormous phone too because I want to be able to read it without glasses. I have made three t shirts recently with Minerva’s Core Range Cotton Jersey and it is so nice. Good on you organizing interfacing. What a great idea to tie the scrap on your project bag.

Oh that T shirt pattern is my go to and it can look so different in different fabrics PLUS it is simple enough to chop around like I did for this one! Glad to hear you have success with it as well. My printer will do this if I key in all the pages at one time. Seems the printer overheats. I have to make sure 10 pages is my limit, put those together and do more. Sure this is not convenient but works for me. I have had great results with Live Notion top patterns. Yours turned out lovely.

Hi!! I Love the intro! I wanted to cry with you with the pdf, it seems like your printer did NOT cooperate. I know it's strange but I recently had some patterns sent off to be printed, and besides the glue not sticking sometimes, I think I prefer putting them together...when the printer cooperates😁 Your Juliet top is SEW pretty!!! And your arms look fabulous in it! I have my interfacing in a junky plastic drawer, and I fight with it every time I need it!! Who has the coolest mum ever? A hat, a bag, AND a magic dress? That Juliet top really impressed me, shame about the gathers but I had to think about the top you recently made where the same thing happened 🤣. Sounds like you need to reorganise the interfacing too. The hardest part was decided how firm or soft it all was as I had so many different types! Katie is so sweet with my makes, she wears anything I make for her, I still can't believe she liked the hat 👏🏼

Hi Carole, congratulations on 5000! It’s a fabulous milestone to reach and you deserve it. I’m so sorry that you had problems printing the pattern, I do too, sometimes. Mostly I save up patterns and send them off locally to be printed on A0 stock. That might be the best option for you if you can find a local printer. The Juliet top looks great on you, that neckline just frames your face, and yes, it’s a little disappointing that the pleats did not hold. I saw another comment about Karina from Lifting Pins and Needles video regarding the Juliet top, they are right, she is a master with those patterns, I watched her video before I made mine and it clarified the instructions. Sometimes Love Notions will make a video about one of their patterns that clears up the instructions, but not for every pattern. You’ll get it and it will be gorgeous. I love that fabric for the new tops, it will be fun to wear. Love those bucket hats and that little bag, so cute! The clip at the end is precious, beautiful flowers. Hi Sue, thanks so much again for recommending that pattern to me. It was the gathers that spread out under the yoke, the pleat and pintucks were fine. I think I prefer that though I will admit as that actually was the one element about the top I was unsure of! I am going to alter the pattern for next time to eliminate it, is that allowed?! Someone else mentioned to me about watching the video and I wouldn't let myself do that as I felt I would have failed in being able to read the instructions, I know, I do things the hard way 😂. I am definitely going to send a pattern away next time as people keep on recommending a company to me and my husband glares at me every time he sees me printing a pattern, "how many pages???" he says with a 'look' !!

I use CLC Printers to print my A0 patterns. They only charge £1.50 per sheet if you spend £5 the postage is free

It appears you printed either all sizes or multiple sizes. With Love Notions you can choose your size which maybe easier and will use less paper and ink.

Oh dear Jane, we have a very old HP printer (10yrs plus)so I can't expect trouble free printing can I! It is ok for little projects with few pages but it dislikes page after page.

Thanks Amanda, that is exactly what happened. I used a much lighter weight paper than normal (60gsm) so I think that is why my good old printer failed. I got there in the end though so all ended well. Thanks so much for your holiday wishes 🧵😊
I used to have problems printing pdf with lots of pages. I started plugging The laptop into the printer instead of using Bluetooth and also only printing about 25 pages at a time.
But sometimes one page goes wonky and I just reprint THAT PAGE.

I really like your top and with the colour blocking. How far down under the sleeve opening did you cut off the pattern for the plain colour.

Carole, I do believe there is some sort of glitch with your printer. I use a projector for my pdf patterns now but I’ve printed many patterns (mostly Love Notions) and never experienced any of the problems you are having. Maybe if there is a computer geek in your life that can help you look at all the settings you might get a better printing for those few times you really want to use pdf patterns? Sometimes it’s just a simple setting that can make all the difference.

I also used lighter weight paper to make it easier to work with.....big mistake .. that is probably why it kept grabbing two pieces at a time. How marvellous that you have a projector to do your patterns. The issue is that I don't like printing patterns hence I am sure I am cursed whenever I do, I need a better mindset next time I think! 🤣

Now that is a brilliant question. Rhododendrons were introduced into the UK in the 18th century. They are actually a massive problem in the wild and the forests as they take over! It is now illegal to plant them in the wild can you believe. There are many forestry organisations that try and reduce them. I absolutely LOVE seeing them in the forest but I know it isn't for the best. Of course we have the varieties in our gardens which is fine and they are widely found across Europe.
