- 3 field watches that represent great value. We have the Icon Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical, the New kid on the block Serica 4512 Commando and the Bulova Hack that represents great value. The field watch is a great way to get into the watch collecting hobby at a reasonable price point.

Serica is tops in the looks department, the glossy blackness of the dial is such much more beautiful than the dullish dark grey of the Bulova or the lacklustre black of the Hamilton. The polished and brushed features lend the watch a much more versaltile look, it's a real strap monster. Going to Paris soon and I'll definitely pay a visit to the Serica shop!
No doubt the Serica Commando is a looker!
I had the khaki field then khaki king and then the new serica when it came out.
Serica pros
- anti reflective crystal (easier to read)
- lume is miles better than Hamilton
- screw down crown (200m)
- bonclip bracelet means you can fit any wrist.
- also it's a little less than 38mm diameter, so better for smaller wrists.
100% correct on all accounts. The Serica is a much more versatile piece that is for sure.
I just purchased the Serica 5303-1 and sold my hamilton khaki field. I’m strongly considering the Serica 4512 next.
The Serica 4512 is a great value compared to its much more expensive 5303 series. You wont go wrong with the 4512.. Congrats on a great watch!
Wait. You think these field watch designs are taking after a 1980s pocket watch from LL Bean? Is that a joke?
These watches replicate the A11, which the US military commissioned during WW2. Bulova was one of the 3 companies that supplied these to the armed forces during WW2 and beyond. (Elgin and Waltham being the other 2.)
The Serica is really nice. I have the Hamilton but its the handwound model without the date. Its weird everyone complains about the AR on that one but mine is spectacularly clear. I did buy it at the AD a few months ago so maybe they updated it or something? I don't know, anyways great video thanks!
You can’t go wrong with the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical, it has become legendary
I wouldn’t consider the Serica a true field watch. It is too polished for field use and resembles more of a casual use/every day use watch. In fact, you stated as much in your review. Moreover, it is the least luminous which could make reading the time difficult in the bush, but then again it really wasn’t designed for true field work. Having spent 12 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, the Serica would be my last choice of the three you reviewed for use in the field.
My Serica arrived today. It's such a great watch.
Looks good
Thank you for the review. Just want to pick your brain. Amazon has the Bulova for about $275 CAD and everyone else is at least $100 more.
Too good to be true?
Thats a great deal, might have been a return or refurbished but that wouldn’t stop me from making the purchase. Also certain colours are not as popular and would lead to discounts. I’ll let mine go at $275 plus shipping if your interested.
@@canadianwatchmonkey3992Do you still have this watch for sale?
@@canadianwatchmonkey3992I am very interested in purchasing your Bulova if it is still available. Thank you for your time Matt.
There is no comparison, the Hamilton Khaki is the best and worth every penny.
Whats the Lug width on the Serica?
Sorry, not inspired by an 1980s pocket watch but by WWII field watches.
The more vintage pocket watches are works of art and would cost thousands of dollars to make in this day and age
