They filmed 5-6 different versions of this skit and Robin ad-libbed his part differently each time. All of them are hilarious. Robin Williams is at his best when he is given the freedom to improv. Jonathan Winters is also brilliant at improv.

She's keeping a straight face because she's used to TRYING to get through skits with Tim Conway and Harvey Korman. They are a tough act to follow, and I'll bet Robin knew that. He so appreciated other comics...especially ones that could improvise even on live TV.

Carol Burnett is a MASTER Comedian. She can make you wet yourself laughing and then make you cry the next minute. Her TV show is one of the best and funniest shows ever on TV. On her show, the cast would try to crack each other up, and they often did, and when they lost it, it was the best part of the show.

Carol Burnett has been an American treasure for decades. From appearances on the Twilight Zone and Gomer Pyle, USMC, to stage productions, and more, she has shown us a wide range of talent. She really does do very well when tackling dramatic topics. The one that comes to mind you might want to watch is from 1979 and is called Friendly Fire, with Ned Beatty. No spoilers but be prepared for serious Carol.

Robin Williams was such a wild card when given free rein! You never knew what he was gonna do or say but you knew it was gonna be interesting and you knew it was gonna be funny! Carol had a lot of practice trying to keep a straight face .....because of all the crazy things that Tim Conway used to do on the show! He's also a genius at improv!

Keening ("caoineadh" in Irish, "coronach" in Scottish Gaelic) was a ritualized vocal lament for the dead practiced by Irish and Scottish Gaels. It consisted of wails and moans interpersed with lyrical and poetic elements, in a semi-musical or chanted form, and was in integral part of the funeral rites.

Carol Burnette was a comedy super producer. One of the more powerful women in Hollywood at a time when there weren't that a many women producing. Carole Burnett, Lucile Ball and the original suffragette film producer Mary Pickford were trailblazers for women. Powerful successful women who inspired generations of girls and opened the way for all the women that followed.

Robin Williams was one of THEE FUNNIEST EVER!!! I first saw him on Happy Days TV show in the 70s. He was SO GOOD, that he got his own show out of it, "Mork and Mindy" was his coming out party. He improvised much of his dialogue, his scripts often were left with OPEN spots where he was allowed to freestyle, to HILARIOUS effect!!

When they were filming the movie Insomnia with Al Pacino, Robin was in my hometown. I have a cousin who always cracks everybody up with laughter, and their table was full, the night young, and everyone was laughing;; then suddenly they all stopped laughing, and my cousin looked behind him and there was Robin Williams, drawn to their table with their laughter. Robin asked if he could join them and proceeded to buy everyone the drinks for the evening, everyone cracking up with laughter. This was a time when he drank a lot. My cousin said he was so quick and so funny.

Most likely, everything Robin is doing here is improv. Usually, he's given an idea, and then they turn him loose. There are many times on this show when no one keeps a straight face. Elephant was probably a Tim Conway reference to a wild bit Tim did about an elephant.

In case no one's pointed it out yet, one of Carol Burnette's most memorable characters was Eunice from The Family sketches- which ultimately became the basis for the sitcom Mama's Family.
But my favorite of her characters is washed-up silent film star Nora Desmond, with Harvey Korman as her ruthlessly loyal manservant Max. There were 5 Nara Desmond sketches, and they're all available on UA-cam.

In the Irish language caoineadh means 'to cry' the pronunciation sounds like 'keen eh'. Traditionally, at Irish and, I think, Scottish funerals there were people whose role was to sing laments. These would have been 'ag caoineadh' or crying in a wailing manner. Keening is an anglicised version of the verb.

Listen to Dolores O’Riordan, lead singer of the Cranberries as she sings the chorus in the song "Zombie" at the end of each word she has a vocal "break" that abruptly flips to a higher tone. That will give you a good idea about what keening sounds like when sung with real words. Now imagine that flip with sounds of remorse and wailing....and you have the keening that Robin Williams was trying to get at. (Enjoy Official Music Video by the Cranberries singing "Zombie"! RIP Delores O'Riordan and Robin Williams.

Supposedly on the Carol Burnett show they would make two takes before a live audience especially in a scene with Tim Conway. One take would more or less follow the script and the second take they would let Tim Conway run wild. Then they would choose the best take.
