    I’m a Staff Accountant and I’ve been at my job for 2 years. When I started my job it was SO stressful because I had so much to learn. It is a big company but once I learned what they do and how their accounting functions worked, I caught on quick and it was like a snowball effect of knowledge after that point. Now I am able to train people and allocate work. It’s overwhelming at first but stay with it!!

    I also changed my major a few times. At first I wanted to study cosmetology but realized I wanted a more stabled income, then changed it to nursing. I got my pre reqs and COVID hit and the vaccine along with many other reasons made me feel that it wasn't for me and decided to switch to accountant. I’m an auditor for a mid sized accnt firm and another thing worth mentioning is the pay is significantly different starting out in audit vs industry. Industry you normally get paid more but maybe growth is a little slower. Whereas in audit, turnover is the norm so growth and promotions come by much quicker.
    Something else is how I notice when I request documents and work papers from the client, I can tell when the person sending me the support has worked in public accounting by how they set their workpapers up and how quickly the provide support to me. I think everyone who studied accounting would benefit from being an auditor at least 2 years to understand financial reporting, the balance sheet and income statement, and the testing that auditors perform so when you go toindustry, you’ll be much more equipped and ready to answer the auditors questions

    • @_janetta
      @_janetta  9 місяців тому +3

      yes!! there definitely can be big swings in pay for the same roles for industry vs audit - the trade off there could be worth it depending on what the persons goals are too.
      lol about the mention of audit workpapers. you can definitely tell the difference between the two! I learned about providing good support early on and making sure your files are organized bc it helps SOOO much when audit comes around (thank you to those teachers and managers) but let me tell you some folks STILL haven't figured out the importance of attaching support to what they do 🙄😂. It's a cluster when they don't work there anymore and you have to go fishing when a request comes through.
      so I totally agree about spending time doing an audit rotation could be beneficial. if nothing else everyone would maaaybe be more likely to up the "neatness" about their work bc that alone would help everyone!

    I really enjoyed this! I kind of slid my way into a controller position at my company with absolutely no prior background in finance whatsoever. I just finished my first year and get imposter syndrome DAILY! I’m looking to move within the next couple of years and am hoping to take a step down and focus solely on accounting or AR/AP. Right now, I’m a one man band doing EVERYTHING! All reconciliations, all AR/AP, closes… you name it. Seeing your video is very inspiring for me and I hope I can continue in this field without a degree (fingers crossed).

      thank you! that's one way to learn a role 😅. if you made it a whole year you know more than you think! ❤️ the place hasn't gone up in flames. having to do everything has its perks. it's A LOT of work but you also get to see first hand how everything is connected which can really help speed up the learning process. unsolicited advice: if you do step down, do it because you want less work/better balance not because imposter syndrome has taken over. they agreed to have you as a controller for a reason ❤️ you got this!

    • @_janetta
      @_janetta  4 місяці тому +2

      loaded questionnn 😂😂 work life balance can be hit or miss for me partially bc I don't have coworkers dragging me to lunch so I'll work through it if it means I log out on time🤷🏾‍♀️. I also forget to take breaks here and there and will also sacrifice them if it means I don't need to work late.🤦🏾‍♀️ HOWEVER that isn't very often (usually around closing or if I have projects I'm working on that I don't want to break my stride with). Once I realize it's happening I do make a point to "reset" bc I deserve breaks. Even if I'm just staring at the ceiling or taking a nap lol I also never feel guilty about taking time off 🤸🏾‍♀️🤸🏾‍♀️ so it all balances out. I get a pretty fair shake. hth!

      @_janetta sounds great!😊 I'm in my early 40s looking for a career change. I've been learning about accounting and came across your UA-cam channel. As a Bw myself, there doesn't seem to be a lot of Blk accountants.
      Question...what do you feel is the best way to break into accounting if you are someone like myself with no accounting experience nor accounting degree? I have a bachelor's degree in Communications and I'm considering returning to school to obtain a post-baccalaureate accounting certificate thru UC San Diego. That will give me enough accounting credits to qualify for CPA.

    • @_janetta
      @_janetta  3 місяці тому +2

      we're definitely out here! :) best way is straight up applying to whatever you feel qualified for. you can start in AP/AR and work your way into it or you may find a company that doesn't care if your degree is in accounting to start as a staff. I've seen it go all sorts of ways! that's a good way to work into the CPA too :) whatever you choose, you got it! 🩷

    Thanks for the video! I'm changing my majors and I'm debating between Accounting & Computer Science. So far, I have only seen negative reviews of accounting: that the pay, hours, stress, and work & life balance is crap compared to Computer Science. I also heard that Accounting is mundane, repetitive, and boring work. I see in your video that you are working remotely. I'm looking for an occupation that allows me to travel the world while only needing a laptop, and from my research so far I have only seen tech jobs and barely any accounting. Would you say its possible to do that in the field of accounting or any job one can do with an accounting degree?
    Edit: Tbh, I just have to see what job I would rather do. I'm leaning into accounting bc with tech jobs, you have to really love it and be good at it to be successful to the point where you spend your free time learning and coding, and I honestly don't think I want to spend my time doing that. What scares me with accounting is all the negativity I read about and whether it aligns with my travel dreams.

    • @_janetta
      @_janetta  Місяць тому +2

      glad you enjoyed! every career has pros and cons, you just have to figure out what that balance is for you. The short of it is, remote work is still work and any company can also dictate where the remote location is. So is it possible to land an accounting role that allows you to truly work from anywhere? I'm sure there's something out there somewhere. Where that is and what the role is? no idea 😅🤷🏾‍♀️

      @_janetta that's true. After thinking it over, I decided it's not worth it cause the master's degree calls for prereqs to be completed. It was either that or a different degree that only takes 1yr to complete. I'm actually in an odd situation where I only work 2-3hrs a day...the other end of the spectrum of being overworked is being done too quickly that you wait for 5pm to come. I guess I should just upskill to pass the time...I saw that you live in Seattle and I also live here. The cost of living is crazy.

As an accountant your toolbox can never be too full. After that, start digging deeper into your work and look for ways to improve the process (if possible) you'll have the freshest eyes on the team so use them to bring value back into the fold. Other than that - SHINE ON GIRL, YOU GOT THIS!! Thank you for being here! ❤️

    Hello I love your channel, and thank you for career advice. I became the full-time caregiver so two family members can complete work years to retire. Both are planning to retire very soon, and I am in the process of returning to work, become secondary caregiver while retired family members will be the primary caregiver. I have a Business Administration undergraduate degree, been out of school since 2008. I am interested in pursuing a career in accounting but wonder should I focus on learning some analytics and basic bookkeeping? Long-term a hybrid or remote occupation will benefit me greatly due to family reasons. I will not be able to begin graduate school until Jan 2025. If you had to do all over if you were me would do masters in accounting or business analytics? The accounting masters does require two accounting analytics classes.I considered tech but my mind does grasp coding quickly.

    I am currently studying to become an accountant, and I really need advice. I wish there were real time videos on UA-cam where an accountant guides us through all the processes involved, like doing Assets, doing taxes, doing tax returns, what to expect, how to do things in software, what a typical month looks like.

    • @_janetta
      @_janetta  5 місяців тому

      I FEEL YOU! There were times I was wishing for the same thing and then after working in the industry for a while, I realized it didn't matter all that much anymore lol.
      For so many reasons but mostly there is variation with how each company does something. For example everyone doesn't use the same software, the typical month varies with your actual role and what to expect on the job also depends on who you work for and how demanding the role is too.
      All that to say - you will be OK. I promise! Learn the technical things and then become a sponge with your first position and stay spongey during your career and it'll serve you well. HTH!

After such a hassle, first it was debits and credits (invoice to reconciliation), then depreciation(double declining, straight line, declining balance etc), Inventory and Inventory methods, then it was GAAP and IFRS, then came the financial statements, then it was cost centres and profit centres, then it was cost allocations, then it was bonds at a premium and discount, with interest and amortization, then came the implications of ratios and EBITDA, then came KPI's, and everything in between like leases and Value Added Tax, Payroll, etc, etc can go on for days IT NEVER ENDS EVER lol I know how much hard work you put in to be where you are !!!!@@_janetta

    I have a question. I am currently majoring in special education and work part time as accountant. I worked as student teacher intern and figured becoming a teacher isn’t for me but I got only one semester before graduating with special education degree. I am really hesitant to change my major because that would add another two years of school but I am willing to work as an accountant like you after graduating. I need real world advice on what to do whether it’s okay to graduate with special education degree or do I need to change major to graduate with accounting degree. Thanks in advance.

    • @_janetta
      @_janetta  3 дні тому +1

      let me tell you, there are SO many accountants that either double majored or majored in something else entirely before rerouting into the finance/accounting worlds 🤷🏾‍♀️ imo if you want to finish up that degree to have something for all your hard work (bc girl you are a SNEEZE from finishing), it shouldn't be an issue - especially since you're already working in acct part time and they hired you knowing you weren't an acct major. then if you want to, you can go back for the accounting credits while still working where you are to have both class and real world experience at the same time🤸🏾‍♀️ getting your foot in the door as a non accountanting major was the hardest part 💕

      hi there! thank you for watching!! I haven't worked in PA before. I suppose it comes down to what your career aspirations are, what kind of work/life balance you want starting off and several other things. Whichever route you choose remember NOTHING is permanent. If you start there you don't have to finish there and vice versa :) Also if there's an opportunity to poke around via internship, that could be helpful too! Short term but long enough for you to observe and take note of what people may not tell you up front 😉 You got this!!

    I just began taking the Bookkeeping/Accounting course online with the NACPB. I have absolutely no office work or bookkeeping experience. My work history has been warehouse and janitorial jobs. I absolutely hate it and always wanted to work in the office. Just never had the skills and resources to gain the skills to do it. Is there a way I can be taught this hands-on by a pro? Reading what to do and attempting to do the exercises isnt enough for me, i feel if i can get one on one with a pro showing me how to do it would be a huge help. Any advice on that, i’d greatly appreciate it.

    tbh am graduating this year and I'm in this "Graduate depression" phase. I have my BA in accounting but now what? I feel like I don't know everything that I need to know. Will companies expect me to know everything? Are they willing to train or teach things that have been forgotten? Because I feel like I don't know a lot ... does that mean ill get paid less than other accountants? Im stressed out just applying to jobs because I fear that if I don't know all of the job requirements perfectly, ill be fired in a months time or less. Can you do a video on this? Im also black with dreads.... So do the companies care a lot about how you look? or do they ask you to change your look? Thank you!

    • @_janetta
      @_janetta  4 місяці тому

      take a breath. literally nobody in the history of ever (except for certified geniuses) knew everything they needed to know before their first day at the job. Not the recruiter, not the manager, not the CFO - and certainly not me 😂. Most companies are willing to teach you what you don't know and actually may PREFER someone with less experience bc they don't have to unlearn bad habits 🤷🏾‍♀️ The 90 day plug and chug is where you'll figure out if you like the job, if you can keep up with the work load, if you like the culture etc.You definitely will not come in the highest paid as an entry lever person bc there will always be someone with more experience and who has probably been there way longer than you. You have to earn your raises just like folks before you. This absolutely does not mean: take the lowest offer though. Leverage sites like Glassdoor to see what the pay range is in your area for the job you're looking for + experience level, that will help with salary expectations to a degree.
      Some companies care about personal appearance more than others. That's everywhere though and I've seen it become more relaxed year after year. It's the difference between the dress code being suit and tie vs dockers vs jeans. Public vs corporate jobs. Do what you can to get a feel for the company culture (check out their website, ask the recruiter culture specific questions etc.) and that'll help. Also be as observant as you can during the in person interview. Show up early to people watch. It looks good to them but also serves you as well 😉. As a black woman I'd for sure tell you to make sure your hair is done in a way that makes you feel comfortable and confident - whatever style that is (as long as it's not giving bed head lol). If they EVER say something negative or passive aggressive about your hair - thank them for their time and bounce ❤️. I'll also say I've had the pleasure of working with folks with dreads, fades, curly fros, braids, wigs, finger waves and all that. So don't be too hard on yourself. I'm sure your dreads add to the swag :)
      Remember: just as much as they're interviewing you, you're interviewing THEM as well. If you get a bad vibe (for whatever reason), you do not have to work there.

      tbh it was a fluke. I applied and was blessed to be given the opportunity! I think with a lot of roles it comes down to whether or not you have the ability to learn a skill you don't already have. With any role I've had there was something to learn regardless of years of experience. You can stick with tax if you really enjoy it but don't be afraid to cast a wider net when the time comes 😊

    Hi Janetta! Thank you soooo much for this video. This was very helpful. I graduated with my accounting degree last year , and I’ve applied to over 100 jobs. Do you have any tips on how to land your first accounting job. I too, live in Atlanta , and I’m desperately looking to get away from the sales industry that I currently work in. I had an interview with Southern Company in April of this year for an accounting role, and I didn’t get the job. I assume it’s because other candidates were more experienced than I am. I think I lost hope after that. If you have any tips on how to successfully land a job , or if you know any jobs where I could get my foot into the door I’d greatly appreciate it ! Thanks again😇🙏

      Long response incoming: First off CONGRATULATIONS on your degree! 🎉 Second - the best advice I have is to "just keep swimming". Apply for every single thing you believe you'd be good at - from entry level staff to AR to AP coordinator etc. Accounting is an umbrella term so use it to your advantage. Really dig into the jobs you've had previously and use your resume to highlight any and all transferable skills that relate to the roles you're wanting. There are so many reasons why someone could get passed on these days. From the salary they want, to the remote days they asked for, to their level of experience, the hiring managers willingness to train, the company deciding to go another direction, how they felt the person would blend with existing staff etc. So always ALWAYS ask for feedback after interviews. It's really invaluable to know their thoughts. Also I know it's hard but try not to sell yourself short and assume it was you - it could definitely be something on their end girlfriend. I wish you the very best of luck! Keep on looking and something will come to you! ♥️

      Not really. With any acct role it's not so much the role being "private" as much as it is who you're doing the work for. I could be a cpa working for a publicly traded real estate firm and have the title Property Accountant (might have additional flair to it but still a property accountant). I could also be a corporate accountant managing the portfolio of a private real estate firm and have the same title.

      imo - yes. there's always going to be a need for people in the accounting cycle. choosing to go the cpa route is as much of a personal choice as it is professional. if you believe it will help you get to where you'd like to go - go for it. if you're not sure, you can wait it out and see what happens. there's no cut off for when to go after your CPA :) as far as job security the more you know and the more you contribute to your team the "safer" you may be-ish. quotations because any company will lay off anyone regardless of their contributions/certifications if it means saving the business.
