Hi Everyone! I hope this video helped answer some of your questions about being an accountant. If you have any additional questions, please leave them below! :)
This is VERY serious. Are you able to tell me if there is a genuine accountant shortage (not just CPA's!)? I keep hearing about an accounting shortage and I find it hard to believe because I spent many long years not being able to find an accounting job to save my life.
HI Rylie. I was wondering how you gained Microsoft Office/Excel skills? I'm interested in accounting, but have heard most roles require Excel proficiency, and there is SO much to Excel that I find it a bit intimidating.
Obviously CPA exam has been a pain in my ass that won't bother me any longer I have gotten my license already thanks to you Mr Dylan God bless you more cuz you made it possible for me
You dont need a CPA license to work in tax at all. Can become an "Enrolled Agent" by passing the SEE exam administered by the IRS and get licensed by the federal government and as far as tax work goes it gives you the same practice rights as a CPA without even needing a bachelors degree. Also working for a federal or state government agency like the IRS, SEC, State department of revenue, or Office of the State Auditor can be a good option as well and generally you get good benefits as a government employee. Public accounting is probably the best place to start your career and I would recommend spending a few years there at least before even thinking about going into industry as you will learn and get a lot of experience fast in public.
Oh my goodness you answered my question before I could comment it haha! I am studying for my associates in accounting (without getting a higher degree until I actually have enough saved up to pay for it-no loans for me!) and I was worrying about what career path would work out best, and whether I would find work at all with just that. If I can become an enrolled agent and work for the gov with just my associates I’d be ecstatic.
@@maplesugar853 You can for sure find work without a bachelors degree it may be a bit more difficult but its doable if you have the right experience/credentials. I work at a small public accounting firm and we have a few full time bookkeepers that do all the accounting in quickbooks for multiple clients and two of them only have an associates degree in accounting they do have a lot of experience though. I think that if you can pass the enrolled agent exam and have a good base knowledge of accounting you should be able to get a job at a CPA firm doing taxes.
I really liked this video. Other videos I have seen haven’t been as optimistic and positive but that’s ok, like you said everyone has their own opinion. I am currently working on my associates at 30 years old. I have been working as an accounting clerk for over 5 years but I am feeling stuck. This is why I decided to peruse a degree. Thanks for such a good video.
@@sharonjo7630 I got my Bachelor's degree in 2019 and I started as an auditor when I graduated. Over the last 5 years I gained experience in different departments such as fixed assets, accounts payable, accounts receivable and worked my way up to an assistant controller
Very helpful video. I'm planning to switch careers and been thinking about getting a Master's in Accounting while working full time. It really helped answer some of my questions. I'm trying to find an entry level position that doesn't require the accounting degree at the moment.
By the time it is a problem we will all be screwed so don't worry. We are a long way off from ai replacing humans and someone needs to be accountable (pun not intended) for the finances, can't leave it up all to a machine to deal with human laws and stuff
I'm also about your age and graduated college around the same time working in industry. And everything you say, I agree with! I know you said you don't plan to take the cpa exam but I might next year. If you're ever curious, I can share my journey thus far and at that point. Just let me know and we can exchange emails and/or linkedins. But this contact info might me too personal so totally understand if you don't want to! Great video as always!
My question is can I get a remote job straight out of college. I'm currently taking online college courses to get a degree in accounting and I would like to work from home. Thats the whole reason I chose accounting above everything else. I want to work with people but not around people. You understand? I had a crazy career move and my previous job was doing installation work where I would go to customers homes and install things for them and I loved it but eventually it burned me out and dealing with angry customers who take out their frustrations on you because of something the company that hired you f'ed up on eventually turned me off from wanting to be around people so now I just want to work away from people but still work with people.
Yes absolutely!! Accounting is great option to find remote work and if you want to be a part of a team but you also have a lot of independence and don't need much interaction with other people on a regular basis
That's awesome!! Congratulations! I just started a new job at the beginning of the year as an assistant controller and the first area I learned was our Accounts Receivable. That sounds like a great opportunity! Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions, you'll do great 😊
Hi, Rylie! Thank you so much for your video and advice for those who are looking to get into the accounting world. This makes my goal a lot more clear! Do you have any advice for someone who wants to go in a self-learning/study path?
I'm so glad you found the video useful! And that sounds like a great idea. As long as you stay consistent and absorb as much info as you can, you'll do great!
Please am at my third year and I want to know that after graduation with no experience can I apply for accounting technician position as an entry level in Canada and am from Ghana 🇬🇭. Thank you
@@mathematicaleconomist4943 I do not. I get highlights but my hair is naturally strawberry blonde. Honestly it looks different depending on the lighting, sometimes red sometimes blonde lol
I start my accounting career at PwC in September as an auditor and I currently have no accounting experience. I have my bachelor’s in accounting and have the 150 credit hours but I am fighting myself about the CPA exam. I don’t really see myself working in public accounting my whole life so idk if I should even pursue the CPA license. What do you think I should do?
If you're unsure you can always study for the exam and get your license as a back up. Even if you leave public accounting other companies still love to see you have your CPA. BUT definitely don't feel pressured. I was the exact same way but I knew after about 6 months I didn't want another job in public accounting and to me it wasn't worth the time and effort. I still have never found myself needing it and it was the right decision for me. Try and weigh the pros and cons and ask yourself where you would like to be in the next few years

You can, it's just incredibly competitive. Lots of people are trying to get remote jobs whereas firms and private companies are making a big push for hybrid.
