My biggest annoyance with Doflamingo will always be his position in the series. Before we even get to Dressrosa, we see him get dismissed completely by Mihawk, fail to successfully apprehend Gecko Moria, and get basically one shotted by Kuzan. By the time we got to the main action, it already seemed like Luffy was stronger than Doflamingo, and I don't think that was wrong. In retrospect, I find it hard to believe that Doflamingo would actually be able to take down most of the truly high level characters, even at Marineford. He's disappointing for a very good reason and I feel fans often overlook his actual relevance in the story when he was first introduced. People forget his warning to Luffy wasn't unfounded and the next saga was a series of losses and humbling
He was also really powerful but also a showcase that power alone wont get you there, you have to give everything and believe in yourself, which moria dint an gave in despair.
@@marocat4749 I think Moria is one of the most important villains in the story when you consider the themes he represents. I'm glad Oda made the choice to ensure the Warlords weren't all cool looking beautiful badasses. It makes sense to have a washed up powerhouse holding onto his broken dreams. Mr Morj has a great video regarding the ladder of the grand line and expresses this perfectly
Moria probably is a character that aged better with time, because from a ‘at the time’ perspective, alot of thriller bark was kinda goofy, but upon rereading you could really see the dude wasnt lying, new world is full of dudes on morias level but they pale in comparison to the yonkou, had luffy gone into new world without a time skip hed have gotten beat down hard and fast, hed be coming out of the new world as dead as moria.
Moria reached Wano, escaped Kaido alive carrying Ryuma's corpse, while still becoming Warlord later on and control the whole Florian Triangle until he met Luffy. I think that's still an awesome feat.
Enel has a very unique use of his fruit and "mantra" considering he still gave luffy a bit of trouble even though luffy's fruit is a practically direct counter of his. Also I like the fact he used his so called mantra to feel people's essences and use his fruit to enhance it to his hearing and feeling their vibrations and what not, kind of like a bat or shark/whale.
Hot take: Big Mom is my favorite One Piece villain. She's fleshed out super well, to the point that her character is more complex than some Straw Hats. There's the tragedy of how she's a naturally kind person, as shown by her flashback and amnesia arcs, but has been hardened and twisted into the monster she is now. She doesn't even remember her Hunger Pangs attacks, and yet they really do cement how dangerous she is. Despite not being the smartest, she was cunning enough to almost absorb Germa's assets(and she may have succeeded, because we haven't seen what happened to Germa). She hates people leaving her, why? Because the most awful things in her life were due to being left, by her parents and, to her knowledge, Mother Carmel and her friends. Then there's her parenting-she seems to care deeply for her children, but she twists them-remember her advice to the one kid that it's normal to have a hundred or two people you want to kill? And then there are certain children she just treats like trash for stupid reasons, but it's consistent across the story, with her "mother mode" being disrupted when Tama leaves and how fast she turned against Zeus, as well as how Snack lost his general status after one defeat. Her children are precious to her, yet when they fail to live up to her expectations, she abandons them, and it's truly awful. She's just so deep and feels like a real person, and often, you just have no idea what she's going to do. And there's even more, but I think I've at least convinced you that I think she's a brilliantly written villain.
Theres this scene in fishman island where one of the princes asks hody what humans ever did him and despite all the reasons he could give to justify his actions he says with a grin; "nothing". And that line really hit me and ive remembered it rlly well since. It really hit home how his character was more based on being consumed by the atmosphere arlong created where everyone just hated a group of people rather than his own justified feelings. This felt really real because of how people in real life just like to pick a side when theres conflict rather then process it and think for themselves. So yeah i totally disagreee, i think that hody is more of a c tier villain atleast and he gets the job done.
Gotta say Kaidou is pretty memorable nevertheless, he was maybe hyped *too* much, but he was still the kind of powerhouse we hoped him to be. The reason why he isn't S tier, however, is that he was always the kind of "final boss type" villain who didn't have that much "humanity" inside: he was on the top, he had his flaws and he was shrouded in mystery for the most part, and those mysteries were revealed in satisfying enough way, but he lacked the wickedness of Crocodile and Doflamingo and his stakes weren't that high. He knew he was on the top of everyone and had his master plan, but since he was virtually invincible, he didn't have much aspiration to PROTECT his status quo. Crocodile wanted to become a ruler and was ready to sacrifice his allies while doing that, Doflamingo went VERY great lengths to keep his status, Katakuri felt he was protecting his family and didn't allow himself to be beaten etc. Kaidou on the other hand was depressed and somewhat wanted to be defeated, waiting for the perfect opponent and lost hope, so he was never fully devoted to his plan and his downfall didn't feel like a crash of ideals as much as Crocodile's or Doflamingo's. But let's see how much new info we get about him in the future.
Katakuri was the fighting partner luffy needed. A better forum of himself in terms of ability but lost his sense of humility. Honestly can’t wait to see him again .
Delighted to see Rap God Eneru in his own God Tier. Disapointed that there's not another tier above that for Buggy alone which transcends into a new paradigm of "heroic villains" that us mere mortal humans cannot even comprehend with our limited dualistic and mutually exclusive concepts of "right" and "wrong". Such trivial things mean nothing to Buggy in the grand scheme of One Piece.
Tbh it wasn't until Doflamingo did I really feel that Oda started crafting great villains. It's not like those that came before were bad but they felt one-dimensional. Crocodile was the only one that stood out and that's only because we got to see more of him in Impel Down and Marineford where he had more complexity added to his character.
it's crazy you say that because Croc was my absolute fav all the way up until Doffy, even then it was pretty much a tie between the two. but once Katakuri showed up he stole my heart, the guy is awesome. i understand what you mean
Let's be honest as well crocodiles defeat is fairly unique from my memory as its got the new world symphony (by dvorak) playing in the climax witch make the fight so much better and its a shame no clasic was used again
in the short amount of time that we had with Katakuri, by the end of it he was fleshed out so well that you even even felt for Brulee and you knew just what it meant to Katakuri when Luffy placed his hat to cover his face.
@@Pengu1Fan true still wondering why big mom didn't make him one of her commanders the dude smart and also has a lot of experience considering he is big mom's firstborn
Moria might be lacking in certain areas but having recently gone back through much of One Piece it struck me just how unsettlingly *competent* Moria was Despite his faults he pretty much commanded the battlefield for most of thriller bark and unlike many other arc villains most of his major screw-ups only happened towards the end when he started getting desperate.
I mean his shortcomings were he was depressed lazy and lacked confidence in himself an using his abilities to th fullest, actually really scary abilities. He is a coward, but a scary dangrous one. Him playing ith hi shadow powers against luffy, he just didnt take the opportunities he could to win. And he still nearly won. And his character is relatable and mirroring luffy.
@@marocat4749 wouldnt say a coward, but due to his defeat and the death of his old crew by kaidou id say lazy or depressed could stay on the table, he took a hit in the new world, and he’s a very average pirate compared to most new world pirates, I like to think morias role in the story was to show the straw hats what would become of them had they made it into the new world without a time skip, theyd have been crushed, most of them killed and whoever was left would be looking as sorry as moria was.
@@CloudWalkBeta I imagine only luffy, sanji, and brook might have been left after getting extremely lucky with an escape, Considering brook can run across water and the only people who can even fly across water or walk upon it like him are big mom ( on zeus/prometheus ) and kaido as a dragon. Though, they wouldn't have gotten THAT far into the new world pre-ts anyway.
I’m surprised Megallen isn’t S. He’s one of the most terrifying character, he controls the most dangerous prison in the world by himself. Honestly it’s too bad he didn’t become an admiral under Akainu, but then again all the pirates would be dead.
Started One Piece after getting laid off work during the early pandemic stages and found you just recently, been a great discovery it helping me get caught up in this giant world i've just found myself in. Keep up the quality content man!
@@MIrfanPerdana nah i prefer enel to lucci, enel was an actually great threat, imagine if entire straw hat crew fought lucci he would be defeated rly easily, while enel beat all the strawhats, + he almost defeated luffy despite him being a natural counter, he was also the first major antagonist to use haki, and at least he had some motivation, lucci was just like i kill for justice but there was nothing there
I think it was interesting how Bellamy had the opposite view points and beliefs of luffy A natural enemy sort of thing, luffy didnt find it important to argue or fight back to someone who has no common beliefs with him But after bellamy realised luffy went to sky island ,his morality changes and he starts believing in these legends which is all on display in the dressrosa arc I think bcz of Going through a change character arc he deserve that A spot
The only S+ tier villain is anyone who isn’t subscribed to the GrandlineReview! But thank you for the amazing content man I always list to them while I’m working they help me through my work shift!🙏🏽
I’ve also always thought of the celestial dragons as a primary antagonist. Even though they don’t have their own arc, they drive a lot of what’s happening in the world.
I think Akainu deserves an s tier, he fought whitebeard and exploded a chunk of his head, he even made a hole in his body, he killed Ace, he left 2 wounds in our protagonist, one emotional and the other scar in the chest, he even made another sacr on jinbei (a sichibukai), so in the end, did a lot in one single arc, each time you see luffy you will see akainu´s doings
I think Hody should be in D tier or in low C. I think the twist that he has no reason to hate humans was interesting and unforeseen. I also like how he was just an embodiment for blind hatred and he served as a serviceable FOIL to Jinbei. Maybe he isn't quite a foil to Jinbei, but he was the exact opposite of what Jinbei would come to stand for.
I think the sad thing was the straw hats didnt really need to do anything, those drugs they were popping were aging them so fast they defeated themselves XD
Hody was a foil for Queen Otohime. But I agree, Hody gets to much hate for being 'Too Easy'. The message of Fishman island was lost in the shonen brained watchers who just wanted to see luffy punch people hard.
Ye but what made him so bad is how he wasnt even strong he just kept taking energy steroids no raw strength or something special. Just drugs upon drugs. Hes literally a copy of arlong and btw i watched fishman island in like 4x cus of hordy
Finally! A proper listing of Rob Lucci in comparison to Crocodile, Arlong and Doflamingo! Apart from raw strength, the legacy of Rob Lucci is an just an illusion created by the arc he was the antagonist of, I have always believed.
Not arguing with Foxy in D tier, but his arc was actually how I got introduced into one piece so I’ll love him forever. I think his arc is just really funny and the goofy nature of it got me wanting to read the entire series!
I think I’m the only one who consider Hody Jones as a good antagonist for fishmen island 😅. For me he is a solid C even maybe B. He wasn’t meant to be threatening. I mean it’s the first arc post timeskip I doubt the crew will struggle against him. Even Franky or Brook could beat him if they were on the surface. No the real danger was his ideology, he represent what the Queen Otohime tried to avoid. I really appreciate Hody as a villain overtime I really don’t think he is the worst antagonist of one piece. Also Ener is a solid B for me.
Hody sort of works as a B-side villain to Arlong, his story is built ontop of Arlong's and the challenges and powers of his character are also sort of built on top of Arlong's. We even have very similar moments in the crew blowing Fishmen out of the water (pun intended) whenever the concept of "Fishman racial superiority" comes up (like Sanji blue walking faster than they could swim) So I don't think it's really fair to Hody to judge him without at least considering some of the Arlong hype. He's a C tier imo
Hody was fantastic, no joke. I think he not only was exactly what he needed to be, but he was unnerving unpredictable and one of the few cases of impulsive and spiteful being used well.
You are not, the fact he gets trashed an is pathetic i sign that people remember him as the worst. Lie morgan and alvida are easy to forget, even foxy who is more memorable can be forgettable, but hody, you wont forget hody. And the fandom does neither. Like ack sparrow said, Wyou are the worst pirate i heard from, "But you heard from me!"
The more I get into one piece and the background and the deeper parts the more Blackbeard becomes my fav villian, waited decades for a chance to chase his ambitions, flipped the world on its head and he’s just getting started, who knows what he has planned
I agree with you about Lucci's personality, but I do think that in the context of the saga he is S tier. He's the avatar of the whole opprossion we feel during the arc, and he is the first villain that make us feel that this could be the end for a main caracter. He would really hunt Robin till the end and there was no escape. His defeat is extremely cathardic for what he represented and for me that is S tier.
Magellan shitty boi is legit such an OP chad. If it wasn’t for Shiryuu and Bon-Chan, he would’ve legit deleted the entirety of the Blackbeard pirates and Luffy without even breaking a sweat. Also no one really defeated him, they just out fooled him
Well technically saboady ended in all of the straw hats getting slapped in the face by kuma and sent to their respective training places, so that's probably the only one that doesn't just have an oppressed kingdom where the villain is punched and arrested. Oh, and maybe zou, since jack was "Trunked".
Ngl, my heart sunk when you placed buggy in the D tier. He is, probably, my favorite one piece villian because of his shear stupidness, funnyness and I guess usopeness.
I'm basing this on how I felt when watching for the first time. Big Mom is definitely S tier for me because I actually felt worried when Jimbe tried to leave, when the straw hats were escaping the wedding at first and then when she had hunger pangs and was reached the sunny. That was terrifying to me. Kaido I feel is right being at A. Luchi should also head to S because he was terrifying when he revealed himself as the villain and first transformed into his hybrid form. Doflamingo honestly did not terrify me in the last battle, it was shocking once he revealed his ties to Celestial dragons but later on when he was hit by Law and started to repair himself, I felt he had overstayed his welcome. I get that we got Gear 4th out of that but to me that fight dragged on longer than necessary.
Kaido easily deserves a tier of his own, he wasnt just badass he was sarcastic asf and well written man i really want to see him in the story again, hope he aint dead
Doflamingo is the best written villain so far. No one comes close. Now kaido could be up there when he is fully fleshed out. BB has the best set up .... He will surely be up there but now doflamingo rules
Doflamingo seems too cartoonish for my liking. Yes, I know One Piece is literally a cartoon, but that doesn't mean the villain has to just be a cartoonishly evil, moustache-twirling "I'm bad cuz bad" character.
He has a nice Backstory, but he acts quiet clumsy in Dressrosa, making a lot of Mistakes. And I feel, if it was just for his Portraial everythere else, and his Flashback he would be S Tier easily. But putting him so much in the Spotlight kinda ruined his more mysterious carefree Nature.

Never forget that Mr. 3 was the guy who made the key to open Ace's shackles in Marineford

Only in One Piece can a middle-aged donut lover who lives with his mother and has ricecake as an ability be also so threatening and badass

i feel like spandam deserves a pretty high spot on this list. he wasn’t strong but he was *reallllly hate-able* which is something i love in villains
He gave that as the one thing Hody did right.

I still think it’s crazy that buggy and Alvida went all the way from weakest of the weak to becoming the heads of buggy’s delivery
I feel that Kizaru should be on this list. He’s the antagonist of Sabaody goes round and demolishes everything in his path

Moria might be lacking in certain areas but having recently gone back through much of One Piece it struck me just how unsettlingly *competent* Moria was
Despite his faults he pretty much commanded the battlefield for most of thriller bark and unlike many other arc villains most of his major screw-ups only happened towards the end when he started getting desperate.
@@marocat4749 wouldnt say a coward, but due to his defeat and the death of his old crew by kaidou id say lazy or depressed could stay on the table, he took a hit in the new world, and he’s a very average pirate compared to most new world pirates,
I like to think morias role in the story was to show the straw hats what would become of them had they made it into the new world without a time skip, theyd have been crushed, most of them killed and whoever was left would be looking as sorry as moria was.
@@CloudWalkBeta Ok thats fair, fearful and traumatizes an neve having recovered is better.
in the end Thriller bark if Moria sees himself as luffy a guy who do everything to achieved his dream he might be a great villian.
Honestly it’s too bad he didn’t become an admiral under Akainu, but then again all the pirates would be dead.
Started One Piece after getting laid off work during the early pandemic stages and found you just recently, been a great discovery it helping me get caught up in this giant world i've just found myself in. Keep up the quality content man!
my personal choice of S rank tiered villains: Arlong, Crocodile, Enel, Doflamingo, Big Mom. and I guess the "World Government"
Replace Enel with Lucci, and you've got my choices.
@@MIrfanPerdana nah i prefer enel to lucci, enel was an actually great threat, imagine if entire straw hat crew fought lucci he would be defeated rly easily, while enel beat all the strawhats, + he almost defeated luffy despite him being a natural counter, he was also the first major antagonist to use haki, and at least he had some motivation, lucci was just like i kill for justice but there was nothing there
I think it was interesting how Bellamy had the opposite view points and beliefs of luffy
A natural enemy sort of thing, luffy didnt find it important to argue or fight back to someone who has no common beliefs with him
But after bellamy realised luffy went to sky island ,his morality changes and he starts believing in these legends which is all on display in the dressrosa arc
I think bcz of Going through a change character arc he deserve that A spot
Showing Katakuri as the flagship villian on the thumbnail is a brave choice.
Is it? I think most people would agree
@@mrcat4508 it would be him or doffy for me, tho I'd probably lean more towards doffy imo.
@@mrcat4508 I'm referring to the fact he's far more of an antagonist then villian.
GLR you left out one major antagonist to One Piece that also deserves its own tier and that is the villain known as Pacing
Truth. Mr. Pacing, first name Anime.
In a tier of its own
Big Mom is my favourite One Piece villain... completely unhinged and straight up hilarious!! 🤣👌
The 2 things I remember I though when I started one-piece:Don kreig was extremely strong as he ruled East blue;the grand line was 1 island .
Foxy, outstay his welcome?
Yeah, and burning to death is a "less than ideal Sunday"
Finally! A proper listing of Rob Lucci in comparison to Crocodile, Arlong and Doflamingo! Apart from raw strength, the legacy of Rob Lucci is an just an illusion created by the arc he was the antagonist of, I have always believed.
My man Crocodile and my guy Katakuri getting the respect they deserve!
Not arguing with Foxy in D tier, but his arc was actually how I got introduced into one piece so I’ll love him forever. I think his arc is just really funny and the goofy nature of it got me wanting to read the entire series!
2:59 now we see Liam embracing his inner Spinel
We even have very similar moments in the crew blowing Fishmen out of the water (pun intended) whenever the concept of "Fishman racial superiority" comes up (like Sanji blue walking faster than they could swim)
So I don't think it's really fair to Hody to judge him without at least considering some of the Arlong hype.
He was only there to become Luffy Punching Bag
I better see Con D. Oriano at SSS villain tier.
Hahah
No filler characters on the list though
what about Croco D. Ile
Enel is the only villan I can think of who succeeded in his goal
I wonder where Shanks would be rated if it turns out that he's a Villian working for the World Government xD

Well technically saboady ended in all of the straw hats getting slapped in the face by kuma and sent to their respective training places, so that's probably the only one that doesn't just have an oppressed kingdom where the villain is punched and arrested. Oh, and maybe zou, since jack was "Trunked".
First we had the Garp tier, then we had the Roger tier, and now we have the best of all the Donut tier!!!
And there's also the satellite moon tier.
Ngl, my heart sunk when you placed buggy in the D tier. He is, probably, my favorite one piece villian because of his shear stupidness, funnyness and I guess usopeness.
The sheer 'don't care about Moria' attitude is frightening!
I’m glad that Alvida didn’t slip your mind, I think she fits quite smoothly in C tier, but I guess the chances of her staying there were slim.
