Upset forging involves increasing in the diameter of a material by compressing its length. Generally, the increase in diameter is only local as when forming a bolt head.

I use a cold forger upsetter. The big one makes a lot of popping and cracking noises and the small one might creak.

That looks a lot like a Hansen Cleaver upset crank press that I used to run. The geartrain is pretty damn quiet though

Ya I’ve got machines that can automatically make 30 of those in a minute cold :P that seems very inefficient
