One of the most important theories on One Piece's Devil Fruits finds confirmation in the smash-hit movie One Piece Film: RED thanks to the powers of the main character, Uta. The Devil Fruit used by Uta, in fact, stores not just the memories but also the creations of one of its previous users, proving that Devil Fruits are vehicles that transmit a person's will and powers.
Devil Fruits are one of the most important and recognizable features in One Piece, appearing since the very first chapter. The fact that their origins and functioning are still a mystery is a testament to Eiichiro Oda's ability as a storyteller. Recently, the author has started to drop more hints about the secrets of the Devil Fruits, considering that One Piece is slowly but surely heading toward its conclusion. The most important clue is that Devil Fruits could be connected to the "lineage factor", which is the name that the series gives to DNA. The Devil Fruit powers shown by Uta in One Piece Film: RED easily confirm the theory that Devil Fruit store the will, and perhaps even more, of previous users.
Uta has eaten the Uta Uta no Mi Devil Fruit, which allows the user to transport the consciousnesses and souls of people who hear them singing, including their own, into a virtual space known as Uta World. In this world, the user is essentially omnipotent and can manipulate reality in any way they want, which is a pretty impressive power even by Devil Fruit standards. However, there is one danger hiding inside Uta World, Tot Musica, a "demon lord" created by a previous user of the Devil Fruit and then sealed away, that can also manifest in the real world. The fact that Tot Musica was created and sealed by a previous user of the Uta Uta no Mi, but it still exists and can be unleashed by Uta, means that Devil Fruits indeed have the capacity to "store" the memories, will, and even the actions of previous users.
Uta's Powers Confirm How Devil Fruits Actually Work

The secret of Devil Fruits' functioning must be connected to the lineage factor. Dr. Vegapunk, the world's best scientist, extracted the DNA of Kaido and used it to create an artificial Devil Fruit that replicates the same abilities as the one Kaido ate. He did the same with his most advanced weapons, the Seraphim cyborgs, who replicate Devil Fruit powers thanks to DNA manipulation. Powers, however, are not the only thing that Devil Fruits pass down through DNA altering. Luffy's Devil Fruit contains the inherited will and, perhaps, even the memory and personality of Joy Boy, a legendary figure from the past of the One Piece world. This "inheritance" aspect of Devil Fruits has not been clearly explained yet, but the lingering presence of Tot Musica in Uta World, despite the death of its creator, is yet another confirmation.
It's clear that Devil Fruits are a lot more than a simple tool to gain powers in One Piece. Their origins and workings are deeply connected to the history of the world and to the many mysteries that Eiichiro Oda has scattered throughout his series. Uta's Devil Fruit powers are not just a key part of the story in One Piece Film: RED, they also prove that the most popular Devil Fruit theories are actually true.
