Hallmark Hall of Fame: Alice in Wonderland (1955)

- This adaptation was broadcast live in color on October 23, 1955, but it was only ever recorded in black-and-white. No color recordings of the broadcast have ever existed. This copy is poor quality (much better quality copies exist in archives), and it's also missing the introduction and commercials, but it's the only one Phantomwise and I have been able to get our hands on thus far. Despite this being less-than-ideal, we've decided to upload it in this form in order to make it available for viewing.
The cat at the beggining does not wanna be there 😂
For all of you TV and film buffs out there, be on the lookout here a much younger, pre-"Happy Days" Tom Bosley as the Knave of Hearts, a pre-"Bewitched" and pre-"Planet of the Apes" Maurice Evans as the Narrator, and J. Pat O'Malley (a DIsney regular for many Disney animated movies, included their 1951 version of "Alice in Wonderland") as the Gryphon.
MrCaptainA There wasn’t a gryphon in the 1951 Disney adaptation
@@lukecox3394 He plays the Gryphon in this version.
@@lukecox3394 He play Tweedle Dee and Dum in the Disney version
I love these older adaptions of Alice in Wonderland, cause they make the characters closest to the John Tennial illustrations! Makes the story more enchanting! Edited to add, way better than the Disney version by far!
@@jayceew.rabbit9358 Both versions, Disney and Gallienne stage adaptation are both equally great versions of the story in my opinion. They're both fun and equally memorable. Katherine and Gillian are both wonderful as Alice.
Oh! thanks for uploading this! I watched it on Amazon Prime for my review, but then when people were asking how to watch it, they had taken it down! I'll have to point them to your channel if anyone else asks!
Your a UA-camr
I do like this version a lot but did a man end up playing the Queen of Hearts? I know it seems like a stupid question but I am actually curious. Love the scenes with Her Majesty though.
Yes. And a guy played the Duchess as a joke to emphasize that both characters are ugly
Every version of Alice is just wonderful to me !
That isn’t true, there are many bad adaptations
@@marcbasilWich one please tell me
Check out Lou Bunnins version of Alice in Wonderland, it is one of the best I've ever seen, so close to the enchantment of the book!
@@marcbasil i said to me how can u say its not true
Thank you so much, i am a huge fan of the story as of all adaptions 😊✨

lol there are tons of bad adaptations
This is similar to the 1933 Alice in wonderland.
Both the 1933 film and this one are from the same stage adaptation by Eva Le Gallienne.
So...hallmark had 2 adaptations?
What's the second?
@@xboxed7202 it was made in i wanna say the late 90s early 2000s had stars like whoopie goldberg, martin short, gene wilder, robbie coltrane and christopher lloyd in it just to name a few
@@magicamadeye you forgot Tina Majorino, as Alice
@@fargokatie Whoopie Goldberg was in the Tina Majorino version ya nit
48:15 Elsa Lanchester, "The Bride of Frankenstein" as the Red Queen.
WOW! I have an old LIFE magazine talking about this and have always wanted to see it. This a highlight (condensed) version of Eva Le Gallienne's well-known evening-length stage productions of 1932, 1947 and 1982 which effectively married the two ALICE books in two separate acts. The very successful 1932 Broadway production was the uncredited inspiration for the so-so 1933 Paramount production which other than a tacked-on introductory sequence follows the exact same structure. There were in all three condensed television adaptations of Le Gallienne's ALICE: an earlier (lost?)1950s Hallmark? Kraft Theatre? United States Steel Hour? Goodyear Playhouse? one (which I believe starred Bambi Linn reprising her 1947 stage performance [there's a 78 rpm record-set too]), then this one, and a vividly colored 1983 PBS Great Performance's adaptation of the 1982 starring Richard Burton's daughter Kate. Le Galienne herself appeared as the White Queen in all three. And yes, while 1982/83 changed the tradition, originally the Duchess and the Queen of Hearts were always performed by men in drag (bowing to conventions of British pantomime) Countering that, in 1947, Julie Harris appeared onstage as the White Rabbit. Gillian Barber is quite natural and not at all artificial as many child actors at the time. She really is quite good and much closer in age. When one remembers that TV at this time was videoed live/near-live without much editing, the accomplishment here is all the more amazing! What a treat -- thank you so much!
Hello again, Gregory! Very neat you got to see the production live!
As far as we're aware the Gallienne version was broadcasted in 1944 by a college (Gallienne herself was not in it) and it's probably gone. Bambi Lynn did portray Alice in 1949 Through the Crystal Ball, though it was a dance program rather this production. It's a shame Lynn only did one TV appearance as Alice when she was so iconic; hopefully, that lost kinescope turns up one day!
@@Phantomwise2 I read about that1944 college production and even saw a dress rehearsal still from it. A couple years back in speaking with you on your blog I directed you to a DVD of bits of scenes from the 1947 production. That was sourced from a collection of 78rpms which you can still pick up on ebay. It had Bambi Linn with LeGalienne as the White Queen and providing a connecting narration. Today, even though its not stated on the cover, I strongly think that set of records is the soundtrack from the lost earlier TV production as they both ran just close to an hour. Here's a link: childrensvinyl.wordpress.com/2012/06/21/alice-in-wonderland-2/
@@gregoryblaska1586 Sorry about the wait. I'm afraid I don't remember a DVD with bits (if it was sent through an ask or submission, tumblr did not always deliver them). Were these audio bits? We do know of the 1947 stage production and the records. We haven't come across any evidence of it being broadcasted on TV, but it's not uncommon for early TV to slip through the cracks; especially if only televised locally. If we find anything, I'll remember to let you know.
By the way, we just set up a new email address: curiouserarchive@gmail.com
My mother taught at the dance school Gillian Barber attended when she filmed this. My mother recently died and today we have been sorting things. We have a scrap book of the reports etc of how she was discovered. We have been unable to contact her despite ex pupils and my mum strutting to the last known address.

THX so much :) similar to the Charlotte Henry version but this Alice is more appealing
Фильм просто супер 👍
I was a huge fan of classic tale Alice in Wonderland when I was a 8 year old child since 2009
It’s interesting that this one is J. Pat O’Malley’s second trip to Wonderland considering he was the voice of Tweedledum & Tweedledee and the Walrus & the Carpenter in the animated Disney version. He must be really *mad* to do more than one Alice in Wonderland. 😂
Why would he? After all, lots of actors do it all the time.

I'm huge fan of music in that movie
I've never seen this version before
Alice is cute 😍adorable beautiful 😍girl ever in her apron pinafore dress I love alice movies
A very adorable Humpty Dumpty. 🥚
Such a perfect version. Everything in this is just perfect. I love it. Thanks Sam
Why are they blending Wonderland with the Looking Glass?
In eva le gallienne script (for a broadway play) the act1 was based in alice in wonderland, and the act2 was based in through the looking glass
For those interested, here is the 78 rpm recording set of the audio excerpts from the 1947 production:

Watching around New Year 2023. Looking for Bobby Clark material. Thanks, this was great!
Hey everyone, if you liked this one, check out Lou Bunnins version! It is closest to the book of all the others ive ever seen! Very echanting like the older book!
Looks like Wizard of Oz Dorothy another version❤❤
Walt Disney was the founder of this movie or only on this Cartoon?
No wonder we are all messed up... Thanks!
I still like the 1915 version best.
I have never seen this before this is new
No one is going to talk about how this is like the 1983 Great Performances one?
Both (and the 1933 movie) are based on the eva le gallienne script
YOOOPIEEE ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Nice THX
This one focused very hard on recreating the original drawings with their costuming. One of the most book accurate versions though it smooshed the two books together as most do.
Какие разные Алисы существуют.. Люблю смотреть старые фильмы часа в три ночи, атмосфера подходящая рассказу
This is an amazing version, I think one of my favorite
Interesting to see they remade the paramount pictures 1933 one, that one was horrifying
The 1933 version and this one were both based on the same Stage Adaptation by Eve La Gallienne
Can you please bring in Alice in wonderland what the matter with the hatter 2007
Oh heck nah. That film sucks
@@criminallyautistic8372….and? So? It’s a so bad it’s good favourite. What’re you saying? It’s supposed to suck, Copernicus
@@marcbasil Since when is a movie supposed to suck? Why would you make a terrible movie on purpose? What kind of masochism is that? That's like proposing to your girlfriend then at your wedding you announce to everyone you cheated on her during your entire relationship. "I'm supposed to be a piece of scum boyfriend." And who's Copernicus? My name is Adam Shirk, Mr. Basil
