This video shows the filter installed backward! I came across this video while trying to learn the correct orientation of the filter, which I eventually found in the quick start guide (PDF). The guide said the black side of the carbon filter should face the front.
Right??
I always say to myself when cleaning, "black is not back".

Don’t forget to remove and clean the back cover of the pump where the cord comes out. Also, black side of filter faces forward.
THANK YOU. I had no idea, I figured they'd actually tell you all the places to clean since they stress regular cleaning so much... I only had a slight buildup of slime, but I can see it getting MUCH worse after prolonged use.
I like to use a toothbrush to clean the parts. Works better
Yup filter definitely backward. But cleaning job is phenomenal.

While our previous manuals may have stated otherwise, we have since learned equal filtration will occur no matter which way the filter is facing. Also if your water is hard and there is limescale buildup, it can be a good idea to use food grade mild acids, like vinegar or citric acid. Never use acidic bathroom cleaners! Then rinse very thoroughly before reassembling and filling up.
Or the housing thing where the filter goes? My dishwasher top rack doesn’t let that piece tilt properly. It still gets clean. Just ends up having water left that didn’t get dry. If someone could answer like ASAP that would be awesome.

Anyone know if u can put the bowl, the very bottom that’s like super big in the on the bottom rack of the dishwasher? If someone could answer ASAP that would be great
Wait. Some of that is dishwasher safe? I guess I misread the materials when I bought mine. You guys should redesign without the tight corners in the base. Obviously the pre-filter holder needs them, but the rest seem unnecessary and a serious pain to clean.
What is the best way to clean the corner squared corner area of the water tank? It's quite hard to get to.

My cat loves this fountain, and so do my grand-dogs when they come to visit! It's worth every penny! During the hot summer months, I drop a couple of ice-cubes in the bottle, so the water comes out nice and cool. I highly recommend this product!
How often should I repeat this process?
Just to let people know. I have this fountain. I clean it regularly. But lately cats would stop drinking after a day or 2. So to make long story short. The back side of pump where power cord goes into pump I discovered by accident that that cover will come off. What was behind it was disgusting. Green algae mold or what ever. So did a thorough cleaning and we'll see what happens next
I have the same problem when I took the pump apart it was disgusting my cat won't ever drink from it anymore
filter direction is wrong!
Thank you for sharing this concern, Justin! Though previous versions of this fountain and its manuals did state that the black side had to face toward the bowl. The current version of these items does confirm that the filter can be placed in either direction. We do apologize for any confusion this caused.
This was no help in the slightest. I'm trying to figure out how to refill the thing. I don't need to clean it

You can refill the fountain by removing the reservoir and filling it up before placing it back in the fountain. What the Baby Jesus! Why wasting so much water while cleaning these tiny little pieces? That would be so sexy that your brand would be ecoresponsible and green. I mean, you purpuse is drinking clear water : thats so fucking rare on the planet. There is no such place as America Where water is talent so for granted. yeah right. You only clean it about twice a month (once every two weeks) Keep the filter clean and fresh & keep the reservoir topped up. I have SAVED lots of time since I bought this fountain and my cat no longer seems to have urinary problems because they drink more from a running source. It's for the pet owner who wants to set it and forget it. but yes, you have to clean your stuff now and again. I'm busy as hell, I work for 3 different companies & take my son a few days a week. I barely have touch this fountain and my cat always has water.
