I actually just showed your video addressing your hands to a young man on my son's basketball team who definitely struggles with the same condition. Used it as a tool to show him how it shouldn't hold him back that he can be anything he wants to be.
Stumpy! After all these years you finally crack that cold one on camera. Thank you!!!! It made my night
As an avid consumer of UA-cam content, the sheer level of entitlement contained within the comments is amazing. I'm just thankful that people like yourself share your wisdom and knowledge for free. Even if something doesn't resonate with me personally, I can't imagine crapping all over someone for it. I guess some of these critics don't remember how hard it was to find quality information before youtube or the internet.
I wish I could "like" this comment a dozen times :)
I don't see a single negative comment in many pages of comments. What are you even talking about?
@@Russ0107 Stumpy made mention of the comments he has received over the years. That was what I was talking about.
I appreciate you site,. Being open is appreciated. The world is always 50/50 stay true to your values !!!
1. spent winter watching UA-cam videos and getting an education, you have no idea how many times I see you do something that you're not talking about but is really enlightening.
2. continued building my shop
3. My friend used to bring back Vernor's, best thing ever. Wish he still could.
4. maybe some people haven't watched your videos and your attitude about safety and community enough to appreciate who you are and how conscientious you are.
Dude, you are a genuine person, and a genuinely good guy. Thank you
Stumpy, Glad to see your hand is a lot better. Ignore the haters; you have a lot of fans. We here in Indiana have been waiting to get back in the shop. Garage is waaay too cold in the winter. Glad to have you yap, show off tools or demonstrate how to sharpen a chisel. It really helps pass the cold dark days.
I just tried cross-country skiing for the first time. We moved to Colorado from Texas four years ago, and we're just twenty minutes from Black Canyon National Park. In the winter they close the road just past the visitor's center and groom it for skiing and snowshoeing. The wife and I had a blast on our borrowed and rented gear. Once all the ski equipment goes on sale in the spring we're buying our own gear!
Whatever commenters say, keep doing you my UA-cam friend. Your shop, your channel. Hater’s gonna hate. Likely because they are jealous. Just keep up the videos, vlogs and just plain and concise content for the rest of us. We appreciate it. Even when some may not.
Love how straight forward you are. Your down to earth approach to things is refreshing.
I spent the first 30 in Michigan and relocated to Tampa 15 years ago. The winters here are an absolute dream for someone vacationing from Mich, but it's the consistency and lack of real seasonal change that I find troubling - It's like one long year that never ends. There is something about the seasons that help mark the passage of time and coincide with the rituals in life. Count yourselves lucky that your wintertime aids in the appreciation of fairer days!
Oh my Gawd, your can/koozie segment was priceless. Laughing my ass off, LOVE IT!
In Idaho, we only have two seasons, This winter and last winter. Good video James.
6:46 Looks better than my "scraps I can't bear to throw out" bin.
For peeing in!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
As a truck driver, I find that hilarious.
In regard to the white oak, You reminded me of a saying I heard from my snowboarding trainer: "I'm not rich enough to buy cheap equipment." The thinking goes - better to spend more once for a reliable, safe and durable equipment that lasts, rather than save some money at first, but later spend more for repairs and replacements.
Great vlog!
And that's a great philosophy for tools as well - get the best quality that you can afford.
@@michaelwarren2391 Yup...I was a mechanic in 'another life' and when I started out I bought a few "cheap" tools. Funny how cheap tools can cost so much. I would still buy cheap tools for the right reasons...like the time my son's car broke down when he was living a couple hours away. We were going down to see him and didn't know he was in trouble till we got there, so I didn't have any tools there to help him. So we went to a Princess Auto (similar to Habor Freight in the US) that was in the next parking lot and I bought some REALLY cheap wrenches, figured they would do for the job at hand...and that's about right. Sure missed my good wenches...and the hide that came off my knuckles (lol).
Funny I was never given any gold plated wrenches though...lol.
Hello neighbor! Hail from Ortonville MI. You asked: The February blues got us to purchase Rad Step thru E-bikes. It’ll extend our range from the teens to the thirty’s (miles, that is). Maybe we’ll stop by the shop as we rail trail by. With 5” wheels and fenders we’re hoping to get a jump on spring.
Talking about sketchy wood... 9 years ago a favorite sugar maple withered on our property. Had it cut down into 5’ logs. Turns out it was heavily spalted. I planked them into 5/4 on my 14” Grizzly after buying a riser kit and dried it in my diy dryer (attic above garage). Well, this winter I got a set of plans and made an entertainment center. Posted it on lumberjocks/FraidKnot. Your videos are an inspiration, and guide me to greater shop success. Is I’ll head to your plans section to support you more! Stay well.
I'm thinking of adding an electric assist to my recumbent trike. I bet it would be lots of fun :) Unfortunately we can't have visitors at the shop. But enjoy the ride :)
Love your show. I appreciate any original six hockey fan showing their fav. I was a Michigander from the beautiful side of the state so i grew up following the Black Hawks. Also in a rebuilding year. You sound a lot like me when it comes to beer, all beer is good, some is better. (ps i drink stouts and porters all year round) Keep up the good work about safety, I have been a woodworker for about 40 years and it never is a bad idea to refresh safety ideas. Enjoy your cold one friend, you really have earned it.
I lived up north for 47 years. During the snowy months I would put my head down and trudge until the weather was nice. A few years ago I realized I was "trudging" through 9 months a year, and living for 3 of them. So Last summer I moved to Florida. I just had our miserable 3 weeks of lows in the upper 40's. But good news! It's spring here in Florida, we crossed 80 degrees today, so you don't have to pray for my safety until next January.
OK.... Definitely didn't see that coming from behind the coozie.... LOL
Informative and humorous. Quite a combination!
I watch a ton of UA-cam videos, especially about woodworking. Yours, though, I don't miss - even topics that aren't strictly relevant to me still have something for me to learn.
Thanks for all the effort you put into them, it is appreciated by this green woodworker from A2.
hi. I am following you from France. Dont worry about the Wicked comments. I am sad to know about your sickness, but it's great to see that you can still work and teach. please carry on
Very creative material. Very cheeky. Well done. You are very generous to us for sharing your insight. Thanks. -Carl

I truly enjoy and learn a lot from you. Thanks
So many things in the video! Yeah, I actually have a pee bottle in my shop! Good craft ales or stouts are one of life's simple pleasures. Lack of snow in RI for the last several years has kept me off my snowshoes, so walking, running and bicycling have filled in. And James, ignore the idiots. Your channel is one of the best woodworking channels on UA-cam and you explain things very well. I am 70 and am I still learn from you. Thanks James.
“I don’t think I can afford to save that much money” That is profound, Sir! Cheers 🍻
The comment on the product you want to turn that lumber into is spot on. The more costly the labour is, whether it is your time or your money, the Less it makes sense to save in materials and tools...
“I”m not so sure I can afford to save so much on lumber!” I haven’t laughed that much in a while. That was awesome.
Someone told me that "There is nothing more expensive than free wood". I guess that can apply to cheap wood too. Thank you for sharing. Have a great 2021 and stay healthy.
I am a big fan of Harvey and Bridge City Tools. Great products / Thanks for the video.
HA! Watching James lament about the lack of snow as Chicago gets hammered with 11inches (~28cm).
You always earn your cold one, enjoy, and thank you for the time that you spend making these videos, and making them in an entertaining and informative manner.
Love Founders. Like you, the only power tool I operate after opening the first 'shop beer' is the vacuum. Haters gonna hate. Love the vlog. Thanks
Enjoy the vlogs . Keep them coming . Have a cold one because you earned it .
I respect your beer drinking! Cheers from Croatia my friend!
Love me some Founders. They just brought back their Blushing Monk which was a limited series belgian-style ale, super tasty if you like fruit infused brews. I think yours are the only vlogs I watch anymore out of all the woodworking content I watch. This one solidified that, love the commentary. Cheers from SW Michigan!
Hiya James! Those planes are absolutely beautiful! Whatever's in the can is basically your business and I respect your support for your team.. Our levels of support around our local teams (football and rugby) verge on or push the boundaries of fanaticism! As always, enjoyed your vlog! Keep safe and blessing upon all of you in the shop and your families. Regards, Mark (South Africa)
Enjoy that cold one!you've earned it my friend!
You have a great channel, very informative. You are a real pleasure to listen to, you voice is perfect for narration in instruction, I could listen all day
I've always wondered about the Redwings cozy, and I love that it has an alternative function. I never assumed there was beer, there, but always felt that your talks were at the end of the day, reflecting on things, and that's the best time for a beer. Also, while I am not a hockey fan (baseball is my sport), I always love when local teams are supported.
James, simply one of the best (or the best) vlogs from Stumpy Nubs, a lot of comfort and personal information, behind the camera (What's in the can?) and a felling to know the James out of the show, thanks and I hope my english be understandable
Thanks Stumpy.... I just found a supplier here in Australia and bought the HP-8... Like I needed another small plane... Of course I do! :)
This is one of my favorite vlogs iI have watched in a while, thanks and keep up the great content.
Listen to you explain the plain brought me back to my childhood listen to Mr Rogers explain things. That was so great. Thank you
The humour in this was brill, those lovely sly digs just brilliant.....I too have a degenerative brain disease.....so I find holes in the floor as I stumble etc (no hole...just my excuse) but like you...I ain't quit doing what I love...keep it up n stay positive (just don't test positive!)
"If I tell people this one is solid gold", you'll find yourself waking-up on the floor wondering what happened! :)
It is nice to have somewhere to go that is not politicized. Thanks for the haven.
That is a Great Beer... Thanx for all the Videos...
I come here to learn some woodworking things and listen to some yapping. I don’t care what’s in the can or that the koozie has a Red Wings logo. Keep on keeping on, James
James, @14:38 shows me why I'd like to see you in in one of those Japanese planing competitions. You'd be a natural.
No snowy winter months here deep in the bayou country of coastal Louisiana. For us, winter is usually about seven days...not all at once, mind you. Of course when winter does hit, the weather is brutal with lows that get down to near freezing. On those days we usually wear long pants. All in fun of course. When we're in the middle of August with 95°F and 95% humidity, you folks are looking at us like we're nuts. What do we do when it's freezing or swealtering? We keep working and complaining about the weather. Don't we all?
Can't stand IPAs, but Founders barrel aged stouts are among my favorites. So, hat's off to you folks in Michigan for brewing some awesome stuff.
I recently picked up the mini plane from Bridge City and am blown away by the quality. It sits on the bench and is within arms reach and has become my favorite plane.
Hey James, thanks for the tip on the HP-8 Plane...ordered one today... now I will have to wait 3 weeks to make it to Canada...LOL
I love kayaking and I love IPA’s. Of course, here in Hawaii, both can be enjoyed all year long.
Enjoyable vlog. Thank you.
I'm new to your channel. Very quickly becoming my favorite free time digital knowledge booster.
Thank you for sharing your balanced wisdom with us.
I get Founders out here in NJ by the bottle or can. It is one of my favorites despite not being a local brew
Thanks for the tip on the Planes. I just bought one of the HP-8 Planes. My first and only plane. I still need a Jack plane for the new Double gate I built. Thanks for sharing.
Hi James. Love your channel, have learned so much. Also, love me some Vernors, the best ginger ale made. Regarding "bargins": I am a retired A&P, and we have a saying; the bitter taste of poor quality lasts long after the sweetness of low price. Incidentally, my first job out of tech school was at Willow Run airport in Ypsilanti. Loved Michiganders, just couldn't handle the winters (I'm not a cold weather person).
Just enjoyed watching a thoughtful informative video while having a cold All Day IPA and had to LOL to see you enjoying the same cold one. Love your videos, keep em coming brother.
I love the explanation about the "cold one"
"I know, it's good to be me..." 🤣🤣
"Could be there for peeing, you don't know". Best line of 2021, hands down.
Did you know the HP-8 is on sale for $69? For that reason that's my favorite. Drinking a cold one!
Winter activities: well it's 0615 on Tuesday 2021-01-26...-7°C in New Brunswick, Canada...I'm sitting out in my backyard at a nice campfire...waiting for my wife to wake up. Nice and quiet way to start the day.
Cheers from NB, Canada...eh.
You’re kinda big deal Stumpy. Why don’t you just keep that flashy gold one and send me that recycled soda can version. You know, hook a brother up. ✊🏾😎👍
heystarfish10, he should do that.
Very interesting to see that FlatMaster style sander at about 9:50 in the video - I have had my Flatmaster 36" for a number of years, and love it.
I hope you get a chance to get out skiing. It has been many years but Cross country skiing is a ton of fun!
Just moved from northern Kentucky to northern Michigan... I am LOVING having snow!
Now to get my shop set up....
Last month I drive from Missouri to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan because my son is going to Tech and it’s a beautiful state. Wanna go back in summer.
James, I feel the same about this winter. I'm in Oakland County and it's been great, but we're expecting a few inches tonight and tomorrow. GO WINGS!
As someone who has an occasional tremor or two, partly from age, partly from who I am, when I have a tremor or three I try to arrange things so that I can put a pinky finger tip on the table or some steady surface while using the other four fingers for something I pretend is actual work. And yes, some times I study my hands on a plane. Just be extra careful around power tools. I'm saying this to you so I can say it to those who may not know. Good job. You ought to be paid for doing this stuff.
Three times I have change the word STUDY to STEADY which I originally wrote. The last time I looked at the word, it said STEADY. When I published it again it changed STEADY to STUDY. My syntax is bad enough without UA-cam adding its 1/2 cents into the formula. BAH!
Founders All Day IPA. My favorite and available at the grocery store here in NY state. I'm. pleased that you started kayaking. I discovered that I really enjoy it 3 years ago and manage to get out on the water very often.
That gold block plane is beautiful. Looks like a fine watch. Must cost a fortune.
Hi Stumpy. My wife and I bought ourselves some snow shoes for Christmas this year, hoping to finally get into that, yay winter hiking. Likewise, I'm in southwest Michigan, and so far, no good for outdoor snow sports. Hoping to get some soon, might be getting some today in fact. Stay safe and warm.
That's the great thing about owning your own shop, you can do and drink what ever you want! Love your vids and Vlogs, Keep it up!
During the video I was wondering how your dad was, and low and behold you mention him. Glad to see he is doing fine. Love that little plane its on my wish list! Stay safe James
That's also him building the project between segments :)
Cheers James! I Enjoyed The Vlog & WhatNot 👍 (especially the "What's in The Can" piece)
Cheers! Also knew it was all day ipa. Founders is some good stuff!
The problem I have with a mild winter is that you do not get the "Bug Kill-Off"
I understand the shaky hands comment. I get the same comment sometimes because I have an essential tremor that developed about 5-6 years ago. It's hereditary. Mine is mostly in my head, but some manifests itself in my hands too. I feel your pain buddy....but we keep working! Good for you!
I know I don’t comment much on your channel but I go to it very often , watch all your films, I found you by the fact that every time I needed hope on something you you have the answer. As far as the wings I live in Detroit myself and you were 100% right we’re rebuilding and people should not to give up on the wings because they’re not doing so well right now I mean think about all the lying fans they’ve been following them for years
Nice!
Keep enjoying your cold ones... (What ever they are....)
You have earned it, my friend!
Somebody I look up to says that all the time.
Hope he doesn't mind....
1. Its -9 outside so I do as little as possible at the moment.
2. Aren't Bridge City and Harvey in the same group now? Excellence all round - saving for my harvey bandsaw but might get a block plane just to encourage myself.
3. Moustache Mike in Spandex. Should at least have been a chapter name of the vlog.
4. New journal is very nice... You are right James about reading in the lazy boy whilst the Tv is on.
nice to see a woodworking channel doing something other than sharpening. every channel on woodworking does sharpenning and while sharp tools are important ,some just seem obsessed. just followin one channel i have sharpened.......the scary sharp (both glass and tile), sandpaper, glasspaper, with all 3 regular jigs, without jigs, home made jigs, waterstone, oil stone, diamond plate, shapton, shipton, shipped out, shipped in, stropped on denim, stropped on leather, stropped on wood, micro bevel, no micro bevel, hand sharpened, machine sharpened. now repeat for plane blades, a years worth of sharpening and nothing to use te now scalpel sharp tools on. i could now have a doctorate on sharpening and still be a woodworking virgin. i wish these channels would settle on the best budget friendly method of sharpening and move on, i used to watch one channel where they showed 10 ways to sharpen chisels , then the same for planes, then saws, etc, etc, until i was screaming, i dont know if they ever made anything as i stopped watching as i had surgical sharp tools likely to never touch wood. thank dog for stumpy and rex and paul.now i just need some wood (whatever that is)
“Some jerkoff” LOL made my day!
Enjoy that cold one, you have earned it my friend!
My oldest son has essential tremors as well. He is 25 and just takes his time on things that cause him to shake more. It's a tough thing to have.
My shop has no heat so the mild winter is great. Go Blues!
I’m not from the US but I was there for a month in Chicago in 1993. My family was planning to tour the US again last year but held back by the pandemic. I like winter coz we don’t have winter here. I always watch your videos, this episode is different from the other videos. Maybe when I go back I get myself some tools new and surplus.
It's neat to see your dad's recumbent trike. They sure are fun.
That's mine :)
@@StumpyNubs Very cool!
LOL My mother-in-law is a Red Wings Fan and I'm a Sharks fan. I love to tell her "Sharks love their Wings Red."
Really, really nice plane. As for the "Low-cost" lumber, my father used to say, "That's the most expensive $250 you'll ever try to save!" We do, however, mill a fair amount of our own lumber. During the winter, before the snow gets too deep, we'll hitch up previously cut logs with a chain and skid them off the mountain onto our trailer and then back to the sawmill. It has the advantage of keeping the logs out of the dirt, and, in turn, seems to avoid dulling the blades on the sawmill quite so fast.
Another great vlog. You just keep rolling along. I too got a GREAT Deal on white oak about 3 years ago. It now sits in a rack and seems to get more twisted every time I pass it by. Oh well, who knows when another GREAT deal may come along. Guess I'll place it next to the oak on the shelf.
Not much snow in south Louisiana. Although when we get some don't bother going out, too many 'good drivers' out there! Have a cold one, the heck with them!!!
Cross Country ski in Wisconsin. Hiking this year like you said. Maple sugar season is also coming quick!
Bit off-topic here, but never mind. Loved the music in today's video! One of the nice features in videos such as yours is the wonderful choice of music to accompany the pictures! It must be an American skill, because we get great music from Essential Craftsman, Abom 79 and others. Thanks for some great music, and keep up the good work!
It's Michigan, James. Give it 15 minutes, and the weather will change!
We're having a snowstorm this morning :)
Love my Dallas Stars.....grew up in Milwaukee, so GO Pack Go.........Kayak.....I have a Topwater 120 Pedal Drive rigged for fishing......love your channel
Cheers James 🍻👍
You went out!😱 I've forgotten what outside looks like. 😭
