Movies like Matilda go thru stages where they don’t make a lot of money when they first come out but generally becomes an iconic movie because kids from the next generation will still love it.
Maybe the movie didn't do well at first because the kids that needed to see it were stuck in their own Matilda scenereos at home. It does well now because people relate to being lied to and gaslit all the time and we like to imagine we have her power in those situations.
Matilda came out a year before I was born (I was born in 1997) and that was honestly one of my favorite movies growing up. I used to have two VHR versions because I watched the first one so much that it was failing apart and it was the movie that inspired me to take up reading and writing.

The fact that she had so much fun on set as a child, and had so many amazing adult actors to protect and guide her is so amazing! Nowadays all you hear about are the children mistreated on set and abused by their managers, etc. I'm glad she had a good experience.
Fun Fact: Danny Devito and his wife Rhea Perlman acted like Mara Wilson’s friends/parents when they coped with her when Susie (Mara’s Mom) passed away.
It’s so heartbreaking to know that her mom was battling breast cancer during the filming of the movie & passed before the release of the film. Danny Devito showed her the final edit of the film so she could watch her daughter before she died.
@Berry Love It’s more about the thought of her passing on and leaving her small child behind... also the fact that the young girl held herself together so well and did an excellent job..
I love that she mentioned that abuse survivors/neglected children found solace with her character. I thought I was alone with that.. To this day, the movie chokes me up because it's the only film that hits close to home.. literally.
Me: 24 years old, born in '97. Struggles with severe anxiety and depression. Watches Matilda a few times a month for the past 6 years, because it is my comfort movie, and it always helps me reel myself back in when things go a little haywire.
My son was fortunate enough to get a male teacher who is like a combination of Miss Honey, Mr Rogers, & Bob Ross. Just as kind as can be, always speaking calmly even with discipline, & uplifting his students. I will remain grateful for that even after he's old enough to recognize the blessing he got as a child. My son wants to be a teacher currently & I hope his experience will be an example he uses as a model if he does become one.
I wanted miss honey to adopt me when I was little. This movie helped me realize that my child abuse I was going through was not ok. I realized it was abuse. And I felt like Matilda understood me. And I loved her happy ending. I wish mine would of been happy too.
Danny Devito has a heart of gold. He took care of little Mara while her mother faced terminal cancer. He acted like her uncle. He fed her and watched her when he had to, he took her to the hospital to visit her mother, and even gave her mother a copy of the film before it was released so that she could watch it before passing.
I'm so glad she had such a positive experience filming, given the horrific experiences a lot of child stars seem to face. It makes me love the film even more, knowing how much support & love she was given, especially as she lost her mother.
Yes, me too. Knowing that she had a such a loving and solid support system on set while she was going through such a tragic time in her personal life makes it even more enjoyable to watch this movie all these years later. I can't believe I never noticed the dedication to her mom in the credits before. I will have to look for it the next time I watch the movie.
This lady is very lucky, fame has not screwed her up at all. She’s still a super happy, genuine, everyday person. Some child stars have not been so lucky and are now victims of Hollywood. Bless you, still so cute as Matilda :)
I read an article she wrote a few years ago where she stated that when she became a pre teen, she was no longer seen as a cute kid and now the casting wanted a hot teenager and she didn’t meet that look, she stopped getting call backs, she said Kristin Stewart was the teenage look that casting calls where looking for
It's crazy to see these clips of Danny and the crew. I played Michael, Matilda's brother in the beginning of the movie. I still remember all of these faces, even now at the age of 32. This experience will forever be a highlight of my life. Brings me a lot of joy to know others cherish this movie so much.
Mrs. Doubtfire, Matilda and Miracle on 34th street, regardless of who you are you loved AT LEAST one of these movies! Enough to send a child actor down an unfortunate spiral. I’m so happy to see that she has remained beautiful, sweet and so humbly grounded! I wish her all the happiness in life! What a beautiful woman she became both inside and out!
Oh my gosh, Mara was just a little toddler then and she looked the same in that movie! When I watched that movie, I was like "Is that Matilda?" and then I was like 😱
This was such an important film for children who come from abusive and neglectful homes. I think sometimes Disney films were too happy go lucky and perfect so when I saw this film I cried because it was something I could relate to at a time when I had no voice.

It really depends, it sounds like she got lucky and was treated well. Some child actors were abused during shooting so of course they don't want to reminisce that trauma. They are not ungrateful, they probably had to sacrifice their childhood so their greedy parents could make money.
I have nothing but the utmost respect for Danny and Rhea for their kindness towards Mara! It was such a great display of compassion of them to do that for Mara!
Matilda is one of the most charming and magical movies that I have seen in my childhood. Danny Devito encouraged her and took great care of her during the recording for the sad loss of her mother. Hollywood mistreated this promising girl as much as it did many other actors. I'm so glad to hear that Mara is okay.
Aww hearing that Danny & Rea stepped up and basically took her under their wing in order to help her have a stable, happy, "normal" time during her moms cancer is 😭😭😭 what amazing humans...
I started crying when she was talking about that. What amazing sweet human beings. ❤️ And super ironic since they were such mean parents in the film haha
She grew up to be so well rounded. She is so wonderful. I feel like she has more to offer & she has a wonderful outlook on life & has so much going on in her mind she can't express.
I'm grateful she blossomed into a lovely, level-headed adult, because that's not always the case with child actors. She was in several of my favourite childhood films. Danny DeVito is a national treasure.
When I was a kid, people often called me Matilda because I very much resemble Mara. Now I’m 31, I have an 11 year old daughter and a 5 year old son and Matilda is a movie we watch often. This movie made my older brother so much more interested in reading books! This movie really sparked his interest in reading. He even went and tried to work at a library as a little kid, just like her!
I love this lady, so humble, and respectful. She has grown up nicely, unlike some child actors or actress who grow up and mess up their lives. And sometimes go round lying about how some male actors, directors abused them..
I learned English thanks to Matilda. I watched it so many times that I memorized the whole script and would just speak all the lines with the characters xD I watched it again a couple of weeks ago after not seeing it for almost 20 years and I could still remember everything haha
Mara Wilson was amazing actress in my opinion and she is very close to Danny and Rhea because she looked up to for anything and they are still there for her and I think it's important to know that she is amazing in anything she was in
It’s so nice to know how much of a positive experience making Matilda was for Mara. The movie means so much to us and to know how much it meant to Mars as well is nice to know
I remember watching Matilda while my parents where going through divorce and fighting all the time when I was 8 years old. It made me so happy and filled me with courage xx
This movie was apart of my childhood its really lovely to hear how warm danny and his wife and the rest of crew were to her going through a tragedy like she did
Danny was such a wonderful guy he even helped with her mom when she was sick. And even got her to see the tape of the movie. Well it’s in the behind the scenes and how he made the movie and even talks about her mom and said he even helped.
I was 28yrs old when this gem came out. I to this day still watch it. I introduced my son to it and I'm excitedly waiting to introduce it to my grand babies. Thank you for all the beautiful memories matilda xx
Girl you will forever be apart of childhoods across the world 🥰😌 you’ve inspired so many children! Love you Mara! Thank you for a great generational movie ❤️
I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who after watching this movie for the first time as a child tried to see it they had Matilda’s power’s 🤣 madly staring at a pencil ✏️ to make it fly haha!!
I remember BEGGING my mom to take me to see this movie when it first came out! I was also 6 years old at the time and loved to read just like her. Matilda was one of my favourite books growing up and I was so excited when I found out there was going to be a movie! It may not have been a commercial success at the time, but to a little bookish girl, it was so refreshing and empowering to see a strong female character of the same age in a movie who also loved to read and wasn't afraid to showcase her intelligence and was in fact, rewarded rather than ostracized for it (in the end, anyway). As you can probably tell, this film had a pretty big impact on my life in such a positive way :).
I’m 35 and loved this movie. When my niece now 11 was going to kindergarten she came to me and was like “auntie you won’t believe my teachers name is Miss Honey!” And shrieked! Timeless movie 🙌🏻😊
This was my favorite childhood movie. I watched it so much I broke my tape of it and had to get another one. This movie will forever stay in my heart.💜
The fact that Danny and Rhea took care of Mara while her mother was in the hospital is incredible. I've loved Matilda from a young age. Ever since I saw it, it was one of my favourite movies. My sister and I would watch Matilda and Harriet The Spy over and over and over again as kids. I saw the Matilda musical recently (the Netflix version) and it's also really great albeit a different Matilda for sure. I love that it's a new spin on a beloved story - there wasn't a need to remake the original movie, and they stand as 2 separate films as far as I'm concerned despite being the same story. Mara Wilson will always be Matilda to me. It's really incredible that she was in this film because she really is the perfect Matilda and shares a lot of the same characteristics in real life as we saw on screen.
I love this movie. We used to call my sister Matilda when we were young because the way she would dress and her cute short Bob with bangs. She would watch this movie everyday and we would all join her. What I love about this actress is that she is not Hollywood weird. She looks so graceful and speaks so well. She is so smart.

Wonderful!
This made me emotional OMGG
I love Miss Honeys and Matildas relationship🥺❤️
Just one more reason to love Danny DeVito! Had no idea her mom had cancer during filming, glad they could ease her pain as a child gong through that.
Mara Wilson was amazing actress in my opinion and she is very close to Danny and Rhea because she looked up to for anything and they are still there for her and I think it's important to know that she is amazing in anything she was in
I enjoyed her as Matilda. One of her best performances ever. Also one of my favorite movies.
Genuinely my favourite film watched this over and over as a child. It still evokes my inner child too when I watch it. ❤️
It’s so nice to know how much of a positive experience making Matilda was for Mara. The movie means so much to us and to know how much it meant to Mars as well is nice to know
This movie to me is like Hocus-Pocus always relevant !
She's so well spoken. I can listen to her speak all day.
I love that they put a tribute at the end of the credits for her mom when she passed away for her
My little cousin when she stayed with us loved her some Matilda. We had to watch that movie from sun up to sun down. It really was a great movie.🥰🥰🥰🥰
I had the same memories of my little cousin and this movie too💕
😌
I’d love to see an interview about her working on Mrs. Doubtfire with Robin Williams! She’s such a talented actress!
What a heartfelt interview. Thank you so much it brought back all the wonderful feelings and memories.
I love how they dedicated the movie for her Mom 💖🕊
I’m so glad the cast was so nice to Mara!
Saw this movie more times than I can ever count
I remember watching Matilda while my parents where going through divorce and fighting all the time when I was 8 years old. It made me so happy and filled me with courage xx
That’s beautiful I know the feeling Cosby show did it for me when mines did
She has absolutely blossomed! Her voice is so soothing; her words are so wise. So well-spoken.
Gosh! Does she do voice acting? She sounds perfect for animation!
Of course she does.
Yes, she does!
@@TheKatarinaGiselle which ones
So sweet to hear a child actor have such good memories of her time acting.
I was 28yrs old when this gem came out. I to this day still watch it. I introduced my son to it and I'm excitedly waiting to introduce it to my grand babies.
Thank you for all the beautiful memories matilda xx
How are you
Girl you will forever be apart of childhoods across the world 🥰😌 you’ve inspired so many children! Love you Mara! Thank you for a great generational movie ❤️
I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who after watching this movie for the first time as a child tried to see it they had Matilda’s power’s 🤣 madly staring at a pencil ✏️ to make it fly haha!!
Same. Also tried to make the door close lol.
This movie is timeless 😁 Truly a movie that will entertain generations to come!
One of my all time favourite films as a child and still is as an adult. I don't think I'll ever get bored of this film.
She's so open and honest. Great interview, and the memories...LOVED this movie growing up
her talking about her mom made me cry. what a special movie
I love this movie. We used to call my sister Matilda when we were young because the way she would dress and her cute short Bob with bangs. She would watch this movie everyday and we would all join her.
What I love about this actress is that she is not Hollywood weird. She looks so graceful and speaks so well. She is so smart.
Such a heartwarming interview ❤️ I love to see Mara with a smile on her face ❤️
