I will always remember this performance. It was not long after the wall came down and the BPO and Abbado held this in East Berlin at the Konzerthaus which was then called the "Schausspielhaus". This Choral Fantasy was electric, as was the entire concert. The chorus was so fine. Kissin was on fire. The BPO played like gods. I love this CD.
What a super recording. Kissin has precision like few others. The left hand independently zooms down the triplets in the opening without a seconds hesitation.
I really loved this very moving musical petformance. Great stuff, BPO conductor, choir, soloists and of course the maestro at the keyboard. You did Beethoven proud.
I have commented hereon before but I cant stop returning to this absolutely wonderful recording of one of my most beloved of all Berthoven's music. It is spiritually and musically most pleasing. Welldone guys.
Rudolf Serkin's recordings of this have always been my favorite. Now there is a contender. I don't know how old/young Kissin is here but his playing kills me. Abbado and the BPO plus singers are also outstanding. This may be the best I have heard the fantasia played. I love it.
This is indeed a beautiful performance, but there is one with Martha Argerich and Seiji Ozawa that I particularly like. Wow. And she has one bandaged finger! See how the public applauds enthusiastically at the end and how she seems to find it... I don't know, as if to say, well, they seem to really have liked it, so I guess we'll come back and take another bow! She and Ozawa are priceless. Musical treasures.
Hello and greetings! German here, I still remember this magnificent concert very well. It was aired live from the Schauspielhaus in (East-)Berlin on december 31th in 1990, as the traditional New-Year's-Concert of the Berlin Philharmonic, under the baton of their then new chief conductor Claudio Abbado, if memory serves right. The program consisted of Beethoven works exclusively. Apart from the choral fantasy also the Great Leonora ouverture op.72a was played, as well as Beethoven's music for Goethe's tragedy "Egmont" op.84, with Bruno Ganz as recitator and Cheryl Studer as soloist. And I absolutely agree with you that Evgenj Kissin's version of the choral fantasy is the most excelent ever. And he was just 19 years, I guess, in any case still a teenager. The concert was published on CD a few weeks later with the title "Beethoven in Berlin", which I immediately purchased for myself. Still one of my favorite CDs.
For me the best version. I don't understand why it's so hard to get HD. I asked about this recording in Berlin, at the Philharmonie, in DVD or Blueray format, It doesn't exist, I DON'T UNDERSTAND!!!
First acquaintance with this captivating music was the R. Serkin; L. Bernstein and NYP Lp for Columbia Records at around 1963. Enjoyed and admired several other very successful recordings of the Fantasia until having come across this issue on laser disc about 1990 and from that time forward played it with great success for friends and acquaintances not yet familiar with it. A standing ovation all of the time.
It's actually a motive that Scarlatti uses in the opening of his K.49. I wonder if it was a source of inspiration for Beethoven, or if they both happened to come up with it independently.
"Großes das ins Herz gedrungen" .15:15 Choir sings something similar to the 9th Symphony "Freude schöner Götterfunken" (Ode an die Freude). Beethoven anticipated his 9th Symphony in the Choral Fantasy. Lovely music.
I have heard this many times in different parts of the world in the live perforance. This has to be the best performance in my opion. Not a music score and sheet in sight. Its like Kissin has a memory like no other, his skills are truely outstanding. The chrous are the best ever, . I thought brendel's perforance in new york in 1991 was outstanding. But as a combined performance this has to be the best l have heard🎉
Really obnoxious ads for a wonderful compositiion ...really hate google youtube that acquisition should never been allowed agoogle cares about is advertising money. Now watch this comment disappearing act.
In agreement that ads decidedly ruin the experience. They are a blatantly coarse, uncultured and vulgar expression of American capitalism at its naked worse. On the flip side, UA-cam offers a paid subscription model that is ad-free, I believe. But yet another monthly subscription expense? No way.

seriously? i paid 50 bucks for this recording to be imported to the usa. worth every penny. this is a great work of art.
Absolutely mind blowing~ Kissin looks so cute and Abado so charming.
BEETHOVEN we love you ❤️❤️❤️
Magnifica, splendida esecuzione.
Ci manca tantissimo il Maestro Abbado

His left hand is something else. Genius.
Unbelievable! I especially felt the emotion displayed by Maestro Abbado.
Unbelievable performance! The feelings
shown by Maestro Abbado were
heartfelt.
W O N D E R F U L ! ! !

Bravo!

Beautifull! Its a pitty that it is interrupted by 3 Google ADS. How dare they.
Dear friend, the party in charge for including these avertisements are insulting the listeners. Eventually, no one gives attention to these averts.

Apparently you do, otherwise you would not have written anything.

The part at 17:00 when it goes G# to A is too good to be true

Actually, the laser dic issue is in color.
Unfortunate that there is no current dvd or bluRay issue.
omg he played without notes
skills are strong
Always
Can you comment for us if you feel bad?
The pianist looks very young; was he?
What is the text the chorus sings?
