Let's have a regular monthly video of your grandad giving his views on the contemporary subjects. It's fascinating to hear his generation's perspective on things.

My grandparents used to tell me stories about how they would go to united one week and city the next. I never really believed them before this video, it seemed way too illogical. Great content as always

It makes sense tbh. There's remnants of this in Yorkshire today where Yorkshire clubs support each other ie Bradford would support Huddersfield as the loyalty to the province/ geographical region rather than small parish or whatever.
Mixed with what Steve said at around 7:00 with the context of watching at the ground being the only CLEAN entertainment and only medium to watch football since you couldn't watch them on the tele.

Sounds a bit OTT, but these videos will be very valuable historically for younger and future Fans of this club who want to learn more about what the REAL United Way is (Not the Disney-fied Version that the club puts out on social media).

My uncles were Liverpool fans and they used to go and watch the Busby Babes at OT if Liverpool were playing too far away (no motorways in those days). They idolised their old captain and assistant manager Matt Busby. My uncle Tommy is still alive and always says that Steven Gerrard was like watching Duncan Edwards in a Liverpool kit.

Powerful comment. It's kind of weird isn't it, that teams from the same area instead of supporting each other and being proud of each other, are usually in a state of bitter rivalry. I think there's much more common for example, in Liverpool and United's culture than between United and Chelsea. And still the main rivalry is pool vs United.

These kind of videos, and especially the one about the babes, are really gold dust for the fans who can't go to OT or Manchester apart from probably once or twice in their entire lives. To hear what started these rivalries and how they evolved through the decades really tickles me in the right areas.

Really good listen Steve. Your grandad reminds me an awful lot of my great uncle who was a huge Manchester United fan. He always used to tell me how he used to watch Manchester United back in the 30s and the 40s. Absolutely fascinating listening to him reminisce about players I'd never heard of and cup games he used to go watch. Hope we hear your grandad more often cause the younger generation might learn a thing or two ❤️👏

The Paterson True Blues (Paterson , NJ) were organized in 1885 and US Champions in 1887-89. Almost all the players were from Mill towns from England and Italy. Football disappeared from america after baseball became the national sport, but I was a diehard fan of Manchester United since 1958.

When I was young, I'm 60, the only live games on TV were the FA Cup Final and England V Scotland, so going to a match was all you had!!
My brother lived in Birmingham in the early 60's and would go and watch Villa one week and Birmingham City the next with his mates.
My elders in Manchester used to go and watch City one week and United the next.
It was common practice back then, as people loved football.
The rivalry was still there, but it was more entertainment than anything else.
    Times have definitely changed.
You would need to be a millionaire now to watch both teams alternate weeks.
The thought of going to watch City (as good as they are now) at the Etihad because I had nothing to do would never enter my head.

I’ve heard this with the London clubs during the 60s and 70s. If your team was playing away from home you’d go and watch one of the others because you’d want to see other styles and players. If United were in town you’d go and see whoever they were playing to catch Georgie Best and the rest.

Looking at it from an outside perspective; it does make you wonder what's the point of having 2 Separate Major Clubs in Manchester.
    After all:
*The root cause of said rivalry was more or less City fans being jealous of Manchester United's rise under Matt Busby (ironically, he actually played for Manchester City). In fact one might argue that the rivalry has only been sustained by jealousy of each others success, be it City Fans over United's past success and United Fans over City's current success.
Especially when from my understanding; there seems to be a pretty unified civic identity both in Manchester itself and in Greater Manchester as a whole.
*The problem with Manchester City is that for all the success they have managed to achieve on the field, this hasn't been reflected in the size of its fanbase. I mean while it's true (despite what certain fans think) that they are indeed a big club (they have the 4th biggest fanbase of English Football Club & have the 9th biggest of any club, all the while having the 14th Highest Average Attendance of any European Club), it's not quite the sort of fanbase size you would expect from the most successful English Club of the last decade.
The reason for this is obvious; not only are they based in the same city as one of the biggest clubs in the world (hence why Man City getting an average attendance of 50,000+ is an impressive achievement under the circumstances), but they compete in an industry where fans are not only ultra-loyal towards their clubs (no matter how bad they perform), but where new fans (unless no one they know likes football) tend to follow the clubs that their friends or family already support.
Thus for a club that joined the ranks of Footballing Elite later than most, it's almost impossible for them to obtain a fanbase size that's at a similar level to Manchester United and the El Classico Clubs. Hence why even PSG have only managed to reach 7th in terms of fanbase size. Not something that the Al-Nahyan's would like to hear considering that they only got involved in Football to obtain both large amounts of Positive PR and Hundreds of Millions (of people) on their side (who appreciate their involvement in Football).
*Despite the lack of success since 2011 (& especially since the Mourinho era), Manchester United still have the 3rd biggest fanbase of any Football Club and the 2nd highest average attendance of any European Football Club as well. It's clear however that Billions are going to be needed to both rebuild the squad (to a standard that could win the PL & CL on a regular basis) and to build a New 120,000-140,000 Seater Stadium to replace Old Trafford.
We all know that the Glazers would never provide such needed investment, thus the real issue is that there are a lack of potential owners out there that are willing to provide that £3-5 Billion of such investment. Especially when the Gulf States of Abu Dhabi, Qatar & Saudi Arabia already own European Clubs and none of Bezos, Musk, Arnault, Zuckerberg, Ellison, Page, Brin & Ambani have shown much interest in owning a football club to generate Positive PR for themselves.
*That's why a takeover of Manchester United by the Al-Nahyan's (and thus a merger between Manchester United & Manchester City, with the resulting club taking on the Manchester United Name & Colours of course) would be the best option for both the Al-Nahyan's themselves and for the entire Manchester United Fanbase.
Especially when it allows the Al-Nahyan's to obtain a loyal fanbase that's on the same size as the El Classico Clubs own fanbases, it gives the Manchester United Fanbase a Team, Squad & Footballing Structure that can allow Manchester United to become regular winners of the PL & CL and it provides Greater Manchester with a brand new 120,000-140,000 Seater Stadium.
In other words; it works for everyone involved other than Die-Hard City Fans.

Burnley and Bastard rovers is a real rivalry and if it wasn't for teams like Burnley there would be no professional football Burnley was one of the original 12 teams who started professional football City and United weren't among them
