Let's have a regular monthly video of your grandad giving his views on the contemporary subjects. It's fascinating to hear his generation's perspective on things.
My grandparents used to tell me stories about how they would go to united one week and city the next. I never really believed them before this video, it seemed way too illogical. Great content as always
It makes sense tbh. There's remnants of this in Yorkshire today where Yorkshire clubs support each other ie Bradford would support Huddersfield as the loyalty to the province/ geographical region rather than small parish or whatever. Mixed with what Steve said at around 7:00 with the context of watching at the ground being the only CLEAN entertainment and only medium to watch football since you couldn't watch them on the tele.
Sounds a bit OTT, but these videos will be very valuable historically for younger and future Fans of this club who want to learn more about what the REAL United Way is (Not the Disney-fied Version that the club puts out on social media).
My uncles were Liverpool fans and they used to go and watch the Busby Babes at OT if Liverpool were playing too far away (no motorways in those days). They idolised their old captain and assistant manager Matt Busby. My uncle Tommy is still alive and always says that Steven Gerrard was like watching Duncan Edwards in a Liverpool kit.
Powerful comment. It's kind of weird isn't it, that teams from the same area instead of supporting each other and being proud of each other, are usually in a state of bitter rivalry. I think there's much more common for example, in Liverpool and United's culture than between United and Chelsea. And still the main rivalry is pool vs United.
Best video I’ve seen in ages Ste! Get your grandad on more. Nothing better than hearing the history of the club from a source that witnessed it first hand. Treasure these chats, I miss having them with my grandad but they stay with you forever.
The introduction of the British rail special train rates (1970s) and many industry’s implementing a 5 day working week (rather than the half day Saturdays) made “going away” much more accessible
As a Brazilian Red who’s been supporting United from abroad since the early 2000’s, it’s amazing to hear these stories, Ste. Great to have the opportunity to be educated by your grandad about United’s History and his experience supporting the reds all these years. Keep up the amazing work! Much Love from Brazil 🇧🇷 UTFR
On ya John legend, always great to get a perspective from the past. Brilliant Video I'd love more especially one about Chelsea the wars in the mid 2000s for silverware were unreal. Maybe one about how Bolton think we're rivals but United barely remember they exist
These kind of videos, and especially the one about the babes, are really gold dust for the fans who can't go to OT or Manchester apart from probably once or twice in their entire lives. To hear what started these rivalries and how they evolved through the decades really tickles me in the right areas.
Really good listen Steve. Your grandad reminds me an awful lot of my great uncle who was a huge Manchester United fan. He always used to tell me how he used to watch Manchester United back in the 30s and the 40s. Absolutely fascinating listening to him reminisce about players I'd never heard of and cup games he used to go watch. Hope we hear your grandad more often cause the younger generation might learn a thing or two ❤️👏
In terms of the veciferous nature of the hatred, West Ham vs Millwall is far more intense than Arsenal vs Spurs. It's probably the London derby with the most animosity between the fans
I’m loving the videos about this side of the club Ste. I’m a die hard supporter but I’m from Chicago so I don’t often get to hear about the history directly from the older generations. It’s all from documentaries. Thanks for doing these!
The Paterson True Blues (Paterson , NJ) were organized in 1885 and US Champions in 1887-89. Almost all the players were from Mill towns from England and Italy. Football disappeared from america after baseball became the national sport, but I was a diehard fan of Manchester United since 1958.
Much respect to Mr.Howson, it’s a blessing the he is still in good health and mind to share his experiences. The memories he has of seeing United through the high and lows, if possible would love to watch more of his experiences over the years. As a foreign fan that has yet to witness a game in person, hearing these stories help paint a better picture of the club and fandom. Excellent content✊🏾
I totally understand why Liv is more hated by the fans than City. I’m probably one of those too. However, as someone who’s been a fan only since 2013, my childhood has overseen this period of dominance from City. I have this really strong hate for them. Derby victories are so bitter sweet
Back in the 50s, in Athens, Greece, the fans would go to whichever local match would be most fun. They decided on the morning of, and they might ended up going to matches of their rivals. Just pure football fun.
City fan since 99. United will always be bigger than us it’s undeniable, but I only supported city cause they where always the underdog but seeing where we are now is crazy- will always remember where we where.
A great story from your Grandad and taking us through the history of the the derby and how he and his friends managed to enjoy going to both Maine Road and Old Tradford to watch the games that they did at the time.
When I was young, I'm 60, the only live games on TV were the FA Cup Final and England V Scotland, so going to a match was all you had!! My brother lived in Birmingham in the early 60's and would go and watch Villa one week and Birmingham City the next with his mates. My elders in Manchester used to go and watch City one week and United the next. It was common practice back then, as people loved football. The rivalry was still there, but it was more entertainment than anything else. Times have definitely changed. You would need to be a millionaire now to watch both teams alternate weeks. The thought of going to watch City (as good as they are now) at the Etihad because I had nothing to do would never enter my head.
Thank you Ste. My Grandmother apparently went to every match before the war, I wish that I could have heard the stories. I did read somewhere that City let United play at their ground after Old Trafford got bombed. Not living or growing up in Manchester, I always thought that was a fine gesture.
My cousin used to take me to Maine road when I was a teen, I didn’t support them but wouldn’t mind going to watch live football as it was hard for me to get United PL game tickets back then
I’ve heard this with the London clubs during the 60s and 70s. If your team was playing away from home you’d go and watch one of the others because you’d want to see other styles and players. If United were in town you’d go and see whoever they were playing to catch Georgie Best and the rest.
Ste can we get your grandad on once a month to chat about the players/ times before the modern era has heard of, first game in 86 but was only 5 so don’t remember much about the actual football.
Man after Quatar! Many countries are interested to learn football especially their great players but the most exciting part is the clubs. Make a video about the clubs and history. This sport is becoming famous to curious countries.,
Life long United fan, born in Salford and I have yet to feel much for this rivalry. Liverpool is the only match I care about. Liverpool winning a league cup hurt me more than any league title City won.
Growing up in Clayton/Ashton under lyne in the 90s I always wanted both Manchester sides to do well. City were never a threat to united and for a time in a different league. My family and all blues exept for my self so always had a soft spot. Changed now that they have the money and winning the league every year. Definitely hate Liverpool more
Looking at it from an outside perspective; it does make you wonder what's the point of having 2 Separate Major Clubs in Manchester. After all: *The root cause of said rivalry was more or less City fans being jealous of Manchester United's rise under Matt Busby (ironically, he actually played for Manchester City). In fact one might argue that the rivalry has only been sustained by jealousy of each others success, be it City Fans over United's past success and United Fans over City's current success. Especially when from my understanding; there seems to be a pretty unified civic identity both in Manchester itself and in Greater Manchester as a whole. *The problem with Manchester City is that for all the success they have managed to achieve on the field, this hasn't been reflected in the size of its fanbase. I mean while it's true (despite what certain fans think) that they are indeed a big club (they have the 4th biggest fanbase of English Football Club & have the 9th biggest of any club, all the while having the 14th Highest Average Attendance of any European Club), it's not quite the sort of fanbase size you would expect from the most successful English Club of the last decade. The reason for this is obvious; not only are they based in the same city as one of the biggest clubs in the world (hence why Man City getting an average attendance of 50,000+ is an impressive achievement under the circumstances), but they compete in an industry where fans are not only ultra-loyal towards their clubs (no matter how bad they perform), but where new fans (unless no one they know likes football) tend to follow the clubs that their friends or family already support. Thus for a club that joined the ranks of Footballing Elite later than most, it's almost impossible for them to obtain a fanbase size that's at a similar level to Manchester United and the El Classico Clubs. Hence why even PSG have only managed to reach 7th in terms of fanbase size. Not something that the Al-Nahyan's would like to hear considering that they only got involved in Football to obtain both large amounts of Positive PR and Hundreds of Millions (of people) on their side (who appreciate their involvement in Football). *Despite the lack of success since 2011 (& especially since the Mourinho era), Manchester United still have the 3rd biggest fanbase of any Football Club and the 2nd highest average attendance of any European Football Club as well. It's clear however that Billions are going to be needed to both rebuild the squad (to a standard that could win the PL & CL on a regular basis) and to build a New 120,000-140,000 Seater Stadium to replace Old Trafford. We all know that the Glazers would never provide such needed investment, thus the real issue is that there are a lack of potential owners out there that are willing to provide that £3-5 Billion of such investment. Especially when the Gulf States of Abu Dhabi, Qatar & Saudi Arabia already own European Clubs and none of Bezos, Musk, Arnault, Zuckerberg, Ellison, Page, Brin & Ambani have shown much interest in owning a football club to generate Positive PR for themselves. *That's why a takeover of Manchester United by the Al-Nahyan's (and thus a merger between Manchester United & Manchester City, with the resulting club taking on the Manchester United Name & Colours of course) would be the best option for both the Al-Nahyan's themselves and for the entire Manchester United Fanbase. Especially when it allows the Al-Nahyan's to obtain a loyal fanbase that's on the same size as the El Classico Clubs own fanbases, it gives the Manchester United Fanbase a Team, Squad & Footballing Structure that can allow Manchester United to become regular winners of the PL & CL and it provides Greater Manchester with a brand new 120,000-140,000 Seater Stadium. In other words; it works for everyone involved other than Die-Hard City Fans.
Some people read palms, some people read tea leaves... I read king size rizla's, and I saw it clear as day that mufc will win by 2 goals on Sunday... Come on united

My Grandad told me the same
So, you didn’t believe your own grandparents and believed someone else’s grandparents!
It makes sense tbh. There's remnants of this in Yorkshire today where Yorkshire clubs support each other ie Bradford would support Huddersfield as the loyalty to the province/ geographical region rather than small parish or whatever.

This! As a 20 year old American fan, I really appreciate these more historical videos.
Not OTT at all mate, you're spot on! As a younger fan I really appreciate these videos. Cheers Ste for sharing this context with us!
Future fans? Really? You're having a laugh! Utd have an ageing fan base. They are becoming more and more irrelevant each year.
My uncles were Liverpool fans and they used to go and watch the Busby Babes at OT if Liverpool were playing too far away (no motorways in those days). Love seeing your grandad on here Ste, reminds me a listening to my grandad talk about United back in the day.
Always great to hear from your grandad lovely old stories

Absolute class from your pops. I’d love to see a little series with him running down his fondest memories of MUFC vs. the weeks’ opposition
I love listening to John talk. I find myself hanging off every word
Ste I could listen to your Grandad all day long. Love his true love for our club. Thanks for this video mate. This has made my day
As a Brazilian Red who’s been supporting United from abroad since the early 2000’s, it’s amazing to hear these stories, Ste. Great to have the opportunity to be educated by your grandad about United’s History and his experience supporting the reds all these years. Keep up the amazing work! Much Love from Brazil 🇧🇷 UTFR

Applauding here!! Superb insight. Please say thank you to your Granddad Ste.
Love hearing this kind of history from someone who experienced it! Brilliant!!
Super fun interview. Thanks for this one.

Bless your grandad, could listen to you both for hours
This was awesome, you should have your grandad on more often. He could teach the younger generation a lot about the club and the culture around it

Great to see John is doing well ❤

Fascinating man. Love this history of the game.
Love this. Not just football. Listen to your grandparents if you lucky enough to still have them. They got the real wisdom.
Don Grandpa Howson.
Great vid and great history Times were certainly different back then.
Thank you Ste. My Grandmother apparently went to every match before the war, I wish that I could have heard the stories. I did read somewhere that City let United play at their ground after Old Trafford got bombed. Not living or growing up in Manchester, I always thought that was a fine gesture.
Love these videos with Pop-Pop.
I love these podcasts the most!
Great watch Ste, say hi to your Grandad from Alex & I. It's important for kids to watch live football with mates as TV is spoiling it
Love your grandads vids, respect ✊🏽

Look who’s back 🤩
I know bro was surprised to learn that City had history before the money came in
Ste you can have some class like your grandpa. Look at how he carries himself. You're just continuously swearing 😆😆. Stand up bro 😂
decent video, good to hear from the older generation of Man Utd fans 👍
Good to see the old man back again 🔴
Wholesome content
Mate of mine who's a city fan was still going to united in the 90s
I still know a 85 red who goes to city
Ste’s grandad >>
COMMON MANCHESTER UNITED IS ALWAYS RED
Talking of rivalries you should do RL Warrington and Widnes now that is vicious
What a gent ❤️
Could genuinely listen to you both talking ball all day long

Brilliant intake to bring in Ste
We became successful and they became bitter.
Fine Sir, no problem.. 😂 True Gentleman, you can pay for school but you can't buy class
Spurs never got over the fact we moved from Woolwich to the North of the River Thames
So grandad likes the Glazers
Hi grandad 💙

He literally said it's kind of flipped now 😂 your reaction itself proves you still are as well 😂
Yet you’re here watching his video… strange
Youd only know this if you watched "literally every podcast he ever makes". Bit awkward 👀
@@maxketley681 sure city don't have any fans to actually make content
The irony of you being here piping up... On a United Channel 😂😂 Muppet
