Hi, the 80Hz is a cut off filter used ONLY for recordings where surrounding equipment generates this kind of hum (80 Hz), like AC or some electric equipment. You do NOT use it for recording in normal conditions. If camcorder has manual adjustment you can set the sensitivity there. This small Vixia may not have manual mode but only auto. In auto rec level mode you would expect it to start bumping up noise after a moment of silence, as it is trying to boost mic's sensitivity, and hence noise also gets bumped up. You got a proper external mic for this camcorder though. Good luck!
I really really wanted to watch and hear this presentation. how ironic that a test of the microphone functions couldn't be heard until you plugged in Rode. Both my youtube volume and my laptop volume was set to max. you did answer one major question which was does the hf r800 have a mic plug. thank you.
I know this is old but am hoping you see this. Did you order the mic from the Amazon seller you listed in the description box? I want to buy one but keep seeing warnings not to buy Rode from Amazon cause they're fakes.
Nice little setup! Mine is very similar. However, I skip using the direct to camera audio and now use my external mic plugged into a zoom h1n. might be an option you will prefer for better audio. It all depends on how you edit your vids though.
Luke Learns thanks! I have thought about trying a zoom or something but haven't made the switch. I might check it out at some point and see what kind of difference it would make.
Seven Tech I really like the versatility of the zoom. I just did a vid comparing the zoom h1 and zoom h1n. And the sound quality is pretty great without needing much editing.
Thanks for this! I used to have the Zoom q4n, but the video quality wasn't ideal. I never thought about using an external audio recorder. I just used my hf r800 yesterday for a live performance, and the audio was meh..
SchoolRIGHT LLC SchoolRIGHT LLC I did not compair the Rhode to a lav mic unfortunately. I did test it against a blue yetti, mod mic and a laptop mic. I didn't record those comparisons though, it was just for my own interest. I really like the shotgun option to filter out some of the background noise and other going on around me.
Hey Bruddah, I have just about the same setup! The 80 hertz switch on the mic is a frequency roll-off. You should notice the loss of low end (bass) with it turned on. I'll be posting a review on my setup soon, check it out!
Yeah, I mainly was making videos as I get new stuff but haven't got anything interesting to make a video about in a long time. It might be time to spend some money!
Seven Tech The biggest difference you will notice will be when mixing your sound. Especially if you’re recording music performances (marching bands, etc.). When recording audio, rolling off everything below 80 (high-pass filter) will make room for the other low end producing elements to sit well with each other without a lot of low end interference in the audio mix. Rolling off the low-end would also help if the subject/s you are recording has a deep voice. Again, this will clear up the mix before you even get to post by getting rid of all the low-end rumbles. It just makes for cleaner audio results if you are recording in or around a lot of low-end producing environments.
I would think as long as it is plugged in to a device that is streaming it should work because it just takes the place of the built in mic of the device.

Awesome! Thanks for that information!
It's not a mic gain switch, it's an 80 Hz roll-off filter. It reduces low frequency noise getting into the recording.
Does the mic mount work for a takstar interview microphone?

Wow thanks for the video. I'm sold on it.
Would al purple panda lav work
great video
rode sounds awesome

Best buy sells rode in stores.
Does the Rode get rid of the hissing that you usually get with the HF800's internal mic?

Luke Learns yeah, the audio quality is way better than the built in mic. I am really enjoying this microphone!
Seven Tech some people dont think there's a difference, but it's night and day. Glad to hear you're enjoying it! Money well spent. Lol

With this canon vixia hf r800 do you have to use a powered external mic?
I chose the powered external but I am unsure if it is required. It seems like I read somewhere when I was purchasing this that I needed a powered mic.
Yes, a powered mic is required on the Cannon Vixia
Did you ever compare the Rode to a lav mic? I have a lav mic set up but love the shotgun idea for multiple subjects.

Thanks, gret job... well done!
They dont have attachment that goes right on top the camera for the led light?
There may be a different mounting option, I am not really sure. I just seen this one and went with it.

Awesome, I will check it out. It took me a little while to realize the difference.
Good deal! You haven't uploaded anything in a while, what's up? Share the experience bruddah! : )

Much better in-depth explanation of the high-pass filter! Thanks for that Ryan.
Much better mic, need another light for both sides.
Can it record facebook live ?

you would need a video capture card and you can stream from there
I hear the difference its louder and deeper voice hehehe
Sorry, I can't hear you!
