I’ve been a Gene fan since I was a teenager. The most impressive thing about Gene and this song is to watch him sing it among the best country singers around. When he gets to the very last line that he so powerfully sings “when I’m gone”, even the stars will start squirming in there chairs, just waiting for him to hit that iconic ending. He always nails it and even the stars ALWAYS give him a standing ovation. He’s the greatest!

Gene is right up there with George Jones and Hank Williams and Conway twitty . . And that's not a very easy task to accomplish . . . Gene I have hear you sing since the 70's and never get tired of hearing you . . . And you definitely belong in the country music Hall of Fame . . . And you were long overdue to be a member of the Grand Ole Opry .

You come across all these aged legends, and you almost expect to hear voice degradation, even to the point of sounding terrible compared to their younger selves, but Gene Watson can still sing every bit as great as he did when he was in his prime. Such an amazing voice.

Memory fails… but I recall you featured early in your career by Loretta Lynn on her concerts. “Farewell Party” stands alone…. on a very short list of greatest country recordings of all time.
