the recent "top gun maverick has no cg" marketing pitch by tom cruise was the beginning of my frustrations with this trend. People don't notice good cg all the time because its so well done you would never know otherwise.

Hugo, I feel your pain. I watch all of the BTS and featurettes on loads of movies, and the number of examples of "We did it all for real", "No CGI", "I always prefer to do it practical", etc. for movies FILLED with visual effects is nothing short of mind-boggling. Hundreds of movies and hundreds of examples. I've literally started tracking them in a document for my own torture. Their remarks are disingenuous at best and disrespectful at worst the kinds of bold-faced lies and omissions of truths that the filmmakers spout off in those interviews.

Imagine if effects artists went on strike for a year and they had to shoot without us 🤣 Maybe then the smooth-brains would realize how much work we put into everything.

lets 100% do this! I'm a film student rn who mainly does VFX and this 'Anti-CGI' Approach is seeping down into film students today, to the point where they think that some of the 'shot for real' shots are actually achievable and that they should do them

Would it be possible to have an interview with a DIrector and understand how much knowledge/awareness do they have about CGI?

It’s also the Directors ego & wanting to their image/ style within the film industry to be superior, that is to have everyone say “They can write & direct so flawlessly” or “Ya they have such a natural feel to their style of directing”. Like sure but still put credit where is due. It’s not machines doing their work it’s actual people.
Or as Peter Griffin would say:
    “Ya it grinds my gears.”

yea, only like 20% of directors actually know what they're doing or even know the process of everything (i.e. James Cameron, Gareth Edwards, even Micheal Bay)... and about 80% are hacks who "fell into it" with connections or whatnot.

The sheer amount of miniatures and matte paintings that were used before VFX came along is staggering. That's the magic of cinema, to create the illusion of a reality that doesn't exist and make it believable to the audience.

From now on avoiding the big movies comments section because they are parades of bad faith against VFX.

Finally Effing tired about the VFX disrespect and when there is good VFX, people giving the credit to "Practical" blah blah.

I can't believe Chris Hemsworth stood several feet away front a torrent of machine gun fire, before gunning down a Helicopter, cause it to explode, murdering the crew. But they "shot it for real" so I guess it was worth it.

they treat us the same as double in movies

Which is interesting in this case, because the director was a stunt double.

You can't do a real helicopter crashing. It's impossible to do.
You can use a 'to scale' model helicopter via remote control but it may look too much like a toy helicopter. Cgi is the best compromise.

But it’s damaging the credibility of CGI and the artists that make them!
