Yes, even the lock removal works on afro-textured hair. Recently Becca, who you see in the video, removed a woman's rock-hard locks who'd had them for 7 years using the Knotty Boy Emergency Removal Kit. Following that with a deep-clean and trim, her hair was restored to full health and you couldn't tell she'd ever had locks. It will take some time to remove mature locks but you will be able to do it. :)
So my mom totally just gave me the ok to grow dreads my hair is only about 4 inches long right now but it grows reallllly fast so im buying a knotty boy dread kit tonight and startin them when it arrives in the mail! this video just made my day!
man...this guy has the perfect hair for dreads. Awesome. Makes me cry. Years ago i had dreads but they didn't survived that long. After cutting them (with 20)i started to loose hair and get bald. Now there are days when people say to me...hey you look exactly like Moby...and im just 25 good old times. Love and your hair and take care as long as you have it
i just received the knotty boy dread kit, i ordered it off ebay, im gonna be putting mine when school ends cause they are a lot of work to keep them tight and clean. but im pretty stoked for them.
first of all, i want to say fantastic video. it helps alot. i'm planing on getting dreadlocks, but i have very fine, thin hair. and i wasa just wondering how you would go about placeing the dreads, and how think you would recomend. -thank you
Yes, over the years we have had thousands of afro-textured users LOVE the products for starting and maintaining locks. One of the greatest things is by using the Knotty Boy locking method described in the vid, combined with the KB products, dreadlocks are able to form easily in ANY hair type. Check out the website for more detailed FAQs about it all, and the Happy Nappy gallery for before/after photos of users of all hair types! :)
@heavyrocer The Knotty Boy Dread Wax CAN be washed out. It's not water-soluble, so it will keep your locs together in the shower, but it is shampoo-soluble, so if you stopped re-applying the wax it would eventually wash out after several shampoos. There are other products out there which are nearly impossible to wash out because of their petroleum-based ingredients - think washing Vaseline off. But the KB wax is totally natural, the only reason it will take a few washes to get out is the beeswax
I was in Premantura, Croatia with my friends and we went on to the beach. we had some drinks... next thing I know, I have one big long dread on the back of my head! I LOVE IT!
getting dreads done in manchester in 2 days! got ginger hair just over the minimum length for dreads (3 or 4 inches) =P hopefully all will go well hehe
Wow! I've been trying to convince my mom to allow me to get dreadlocks and I think she's finally going to give in, so thank you for this video! Do you think there is anyway you could make a video about dreadlock removal, even if it was really quick? Thanks again!
@chihuahuabebi Hey, you're totally right. Crocheting your hair really does give the fastest, tightest looking dreadlocks from the get-go, though they do stick out all funny at the beginning as well. However, crocheting your hair well is a skill that takes time and practice to master, so the method you see us promoting, is a more simple technique people can try at home without needing to learn any special skills. Thanks for watching!
@joker5396 Yea it is! It will lock up faster then straight hair. Any hair texture can lock. It takes much longer for straight haired people to lock then curly-haired people. The results are also much different(not always)
@kiiimeluv if u have afro texture hair then u dont have to do anything to ur hair it will lock automatically, or u cant two strand twist it to determin the size of ur locks!
It depends on what kind of hair you have and how well you take care of them. It's usually easier to keep them neat if your hair is nappy and if you wax the dreads often enough.
I'm curious about something and I hope you could help: When I got my dreads I didn't use wax (although I'm not one of those "I hate wax, it's evil!!" people), so therefore I knotted them up and backcombed them REEEAAALLLYYY thoroughly when I started them...like, they were already solid a day old backcombed. Anywho, I was just wondering if your slightly lighter method of backcombing (it didn't look as intense) benefits dreads in forming? Thanks (: ☮
+KamiCB Yes, and no - it's up to the scalp and the hair, really. The only problem with thinner locks is that over time old growth is released and new growth finds its way into a lock - they get fatter with time. With very thin locks, their weight can end up being too great for the root to support. Anyone with traction or hereditary alopecia should take note.
Black Sabbath rock on! Ive been wanting to get dreads for awhile now and have always wanted it done by a professional. I have very curly hair when i grow it out (think seth rogan) white boy afro style, and i hear they turn out better this way. I hope i have the patience to have a good outcome and hope i look good wearin them! thanks for the video, your pretty by the way.
+harold villarante Knotty Boy Dread Wax - www.knottyboy.com. Wax should only be used at the beginning of the locking process, and for about six months or so afterward. A little goes a long way - don't overdo it! When in doubt, use less.
This might be a stupid question but if you have curly hair will the dreads come out weird or different? I want to slowly do my entire head but I'm not sure since my hair is curly.
Hey i just made some dreadlocks and they look real nice, but some are really pointy at the ends, will it even out after i wash some of the wax out? (like i said this is my first week w dreads, havent even washed em' yet lol)
@Andreicurteanu21 yes!! i just looked that up and it's possible. it just takes a really long time (like several hours or more) where as just cutting it takes less than one hour
I have short hair (faux hawk), but trying to grow them out for beginner dreads. I am a rookie at this. I am going to dread my hair on my own because everyone is against it due to the lack of knowledge ppl perceive dreads to be such as dirty and smelly hair, etc. How long does my hair need to be to start out with beginner dreads?
do u need long or a lot of hair? i have thick hair, not a lot but a lot, and its about 4 inches past my shoulder. also wat about caring for it after i get them done, combing and washing.
I don't know about restarting them :P, I'm plaining to have me and 3 chicks dread my hair in 6 days. I made an appointment with a stylist to section the hair with rubber bands a couple days before the girls dread them. So they come out even and they don't have to section my hair. I'm doing a "dread party" where I have a bunch of food and movies to watch. xD
i have a question. i want dreads but i dont want to do them myself because i dont want to mess up, i want them done professionally but i dont know where to get them. i live in huntsville alabama. I cant seem to find a place on google or anything. If u know of any place i could get them done please please please reply. thank you
Good question! The answer is no. Mildew can form in hair locked by any method, simply by not allowing wet locks to dry properly before covering with a hat, or going to bed with really damp locks. Also, when waxing, be sure that hair is totally dry, and try not to wet (shampoo) freshly-waxed locks.
just some good wax (optional) 1inchx1inch sections of hair and a fine tooth stell comb. try it with 1 dread at first and then you can either make the sections bigger or smaller depending on how thikck the outcome is, just follow everything in his video.
How do you mean part the sections that are comparable to the hair type? My hair is not very thick but bc its medium curly, it adds this false thickness appearance. But I would like my dreads about pinky finger thickness. Is this a possibility?
@TheCrazyandHazy Of course not! We want people to make their own choices and do what they feel is best. Our website even includes instructions for both product and product-FREE methods on locking hair. Plus our products are totally natural, so we're actually all about it.
If you have any doubts, check out our Knotty Boy Dreadlock Gallery. 10 years and over 3000 before/after pics of happy, nappy Knotty Boy Dread Wax users can't be wrong. Don't worry, your locks will turn out great! Good luck and happy dreading! :)
im thinking of doing it my hair is real long longer then his and is naturally curly, but if i dont like the locks or its done bad I gotta have my head after my hair has been growing for 3 years
I'm so excited to get my drealocks but i have so many questions about care and how and how much... one of my friends has done it before and says he can do it for me but i want to do it the all natural way no wax or anything i've seen how they do the needle style and i'm thinkin thats the way i want to go if anyone can help me i would really appreciate it THNX!! Moesy
after you get them i wold wash emdiatly before and wait 4 days after , so they can get used to being in place , kinda like when getting braids in and they are left in a while , they tend to be really wavy after taking them out ,, similar with dreads , but be very non aggressive when washing, hope i helped some ......
i have been waiting 6 months and i am finally getting dreads after growing my hair out it didnt look so bad at first, but now it has gotten way too long and i cop so much for it at school but this weekend i can finally get my dreads done and i will laugh in everyones faces :P i just turned 16 so i planned to get dreads since late last year/early this year
i'm still wondering whether or not to get them, but its getting to that point in my life were i need to start thinking about being able to get a job. I live in england we are fairly conservative, anything creative is usually shunned
I just bought one the knotty boy starter kits and was trying to start my locks, but my first attempt didn't turn out as nicely as in the video. My hairs not really fine, but not nearly as thick and frizzy as the guy's in the video (And about 10 to 12 inches long). My hair is somewhere in the middle and has a bit of waviness to it. When we tried to do it like in the video, the dreads wouldn't stay together, and kept coming apart into waxy strands. Is that normal? Am I doing something wrong?
If you go to a dreadtician, or if you go to any black barber shop and ask if they do dreadlocks, you can usually just tell the person that you'd prefer them a certain width and they'll do what they can.
i'm Filipino and have long hair, pass down my shoulder. the problem is, i'm a Merchant Sailor and gone for 4 months. i just worry about no being able to maintain it for that long period of time and thats the reason why is holding me back from getting it done. any info's and advice from KnottyBoy would be awesome. thank you!

Wonderful thank you your was the first video I watched on how to dreadlock
i love his hair. the color is amazing
Connor has beautiful red hair.
first of all, i want to say fantastic video. it helps alot. i'm planing on getting dreadlocks, but i have very fine, thin hair. and i wasa just wondering how you would go about placeing the dreads, and how think you would recomend.

Great video, so is this the best method for straight hair?

Its so interesting to me on how blacks and Caucasians do dreads two entirely different ways..
The hair typs are so different, thats probably why! Very different but equally gorgeous.

@EvWuzhere No, we're in VANCOUVER, BC, Canada!
Is it better to start them w/ short hair, and go from there, or long hair? Which will help me keep tighter braids?
so even the lock removal? cuz i have locs already, but i am considering taking them out sometime next year. but i really dont want to cut them.
@itsallgood239 yea dreads are meant more for nappy hair and not straight but they both can work fine regardless
@joker5396 Yea it is! It will lock up faster then straight hair. Any hair texture can lock. It takes much longer for straight haired people to lock then curly-haired people. The results are also much different(not always)
Im interested in comming by to the salon as Im in vancouver. How much does it cost though to get dreads done?
so i want dreads and i dont want them to be the same size do you guys have a recommended way of doing so?
that take a long time, but looks good
i watch this like every day..lol..man i want dreads.

@tropicanacharm 2 inches! Most people with African-textured hair start dreads with twists. If you wanna backcomb you need at least 3 inches.
I have really nappy hair. is that good for dreads? would it help them form faster?
My friend sage dread locked her hair but kept the bangs normal it looked really cool
do u need long or a lot of hair?

OMG are you guys out of reno? I LIVE RIGHT NEAR RENO?
What would I do differently if I wanted to put a bead on one of my dreadlocks?
I'm 12 and I'm gettin' dreads this summer too :D
Hey, do you guys have any kind of updates on his dreads? I'd love to see how they turned out.
are these dreads temporary ? i mean you can wash them and make your hair loose again right ?
Dreads can be removed, but they won't wash out easily once they've been locked using this method.
i have a question.
i want dreads but i dont want to do them myself because i dont want to mess up, i want them done professionally but i dont know where to get them. i live in huntsville alabama. @888riddim888 Backcombing as tightly as possible is always best.
Two questions:
1) If you have wavy hair, can you have dreads
and
2) how do you take care of bathing, swimming and the smell?

i love his hair
i want to make my hair dreadlocks too...but it will cost me about 150-200 euros (1 euro=1.3027$), and my dreads will probably be a little shorter than my natural hair...
does it worth?are dreadlocks so expensive in US?should i make them my own?
where can I find a salon that I can trust to do good dreads?
I'm getting dreads again soon!!!!!
No shit, I didn't know you guys were located in Vancouver, I know where i'm going to get my hair locked up, big up, Jah bless.
i got silky dreads.
is there a way to make natty dreads out of them?
How long would dreadlocks last and how often you have to redo it?
Clint Evans I realize this is an old comment but dreads are permanent but you can brush them out but they need to be maintained like every few months ish to dread in your newly grown hair, Ellin
