  • In May 2014, the Indianapolis Zoo opened the stunning Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center, which has been called one of the most significant zoo exhibits in the world! A year after its opening, the Center continues to amaze guests with its many incredible perspectives of great apes. Now, hear from Dr. Rob Shumaker about why the Center has been such an overwhelming success.

This place looks really neat. I'll bet it's the best orangutan exhibit in the country, if not the world.

The greatest ape exhibit I have seen here I can't wait to also see chimpanzees at the zoo. Make sure to
    keep making changes.

Wish we could visit and communicate with the orangutans without glass being between the orangutans and humans.

The outdoor space seems to be lacking in any kind of greenery. These orangs live in a concrete jungle. Maybe a better habitat would obscure the visitor’s views. I also don’t see the point of the extremely high towers that are spaced so far apart. In the rainforest, the orangutans have so many trees and vines. At least the zoo says it is educating the public on the risks this species faces. Surely that’s important.

I'm surprised they allow them to climb so high on those rails, it seems one is bound to have an accident. unless there is a safety net underneath.

Wouldn't it be stupid not to have a safety net?

they do fine without a safety net. climbing on the rails for them is as natural as us walking on a sidewalk. do we need rails? not unless we have an underlying condition that causes us to fall on the sidewalk. Orangs have really strong hands, arms, legs, and feet. they have opposable thumbs and big toes. they are awesome when they climb.

It's their environment to be in high up in tree.

Human perception is so wrong about Orang Utan. We as Orang/humans should interact with Orang Utan. The reason their name is Orang Utan mean a person who lives in Utan/ jungle Ideally they should lives in their habitat which is in jungle of Sumatra or Borneo.
