My one complaint with Mania, as good as it was, especially having 14 not just 7 emerald hunts, they could've implemented it. Despite Origins many faults I hope this is some good to come out of it, and a step in the right direction to bringing hyper forms back.

Guessing it's one of the things Sega held them back on, I heard Taxman or Stealth, can't remember which or both, came out and said they held their team quite a bit, like they had planned more newer stages than remixes. It's so weird that the Super Tails I've known for years was actually his Hyper form. They just changed it at the last minute to keep continuity with Sonic 2.
Yeah he was explaining that in the original Sega games it was his super form but in origins they changed it to Hyper form. I'm sure Sonic Mania had a hand in that because he gets the super form without the birds in Mania he just glows and increased speed
Afaik the reason is that Knuckles and Tails can't go Super, so the idea is only the Hyper Emeralds can give non-compatible creatures a Super Form. Hence why in the modern games the only times they can go Super is in Heroes, where they are in very close proximity to Super/Hyper/Whatever Sonic.
Fun fact: Sonic 3 AIR introduced this concept way before Sonic Origins. There's a toggle in the options to keep the original Super Form or seperate it into a Super and Hyper Form, exactly like it is in Origins. I wonder if the Origins team took inspiration from AIR or if it was a requested change from SEGA!
fun fact: sonic 3 introduced this concept way before AIR. in the 0517 prototype, using the chaos emeralds as tails has him go super without the flickies, while the hyper form (only accessible with the S monitor) has him with the flickies; this indicates that they may have changed this for continuity with sonic 2, similar to how sonic 2 introduced a seventh chaos emerald for continuity with sonic 1's lack of super state
I mean, they made it work like the other 2 characters already worked in the original game, and Tails had a super form using only the emeralds in Mania, I dont think AIR had nothing to do
@@zacknattack While that is true, it's still just a beta build and only the original (Flicky) Super Form made it into the final game. AIR is the first to feature both forms for Tails in the final game exactly how Origins has it now.
I was legitimately excited for Hyper Tails' introduction in Sonic Origins. It was, in my opinion, the most important concept introduced to the game. Tails finally recieved equal treatment to title characters Sonic & Knuckles. I know Sega probably only did that for the sake of consistancy, but it's still nice to see.
"All they really did was add...sparklers" And yet that alone makes the form so much cooler. As a kid playing Sonic 2, after getting all the emeralds, I used to have a mental map of how to navigate certain levels, getting enough rings but not transforming, until I could get an invincibility box. If you go super sonic while invincible in that game you keep the invincibility sparkles, and I thought it was awesome.

Interestingly if his Super/Hyper form had been dominated by black or navy blue and had birds to match, they could be crows or ravens which are known to fictionally associate with foxes as fellow clever animals...and a group of crows or ravens is called a _murder_
5:23 I kinda thought that was intentional, tails has jack squat in terms of having interacted with these magic gemstones and thus can't easily use _super_ forms without a _super_ potent source of chaos energy.
Reminds me of when Mania came out. Iizuka had said Super Emeralds and Hyper forms weren't canon and then boom, Mania has the grey, cracked, Super Emeralds right there - implying that their power was depleted or similar by the events of S3&K.
I like that they're FINALLY acknowledging the "levels/layers" of Super forms and the Hyper forms. I know lots of the canon and non-canonicity is everywhere but we have people and passionate fan behind every aspect of it. Fun Fact: There's been talk about the story of Sonic Frontiers that Sonic's Super Form *"might not be enough to take down the titan bosses in the game"* That *could* be a reference to Hyper Sonic or Dark Sonic or some other unique form that they're saving for when the game comes out, but at the very least they're starting to organize *some* form of canon/lore/story. (P.S. That Sonic Colors Ultimate joke killed me 😂)

Actually, the Super Form is enough for the Titans, but the overall idea is that it might not be enough for the final boss of the game. Yeah, that's basically semantics, but still.

@@namedone3359 they're all special, if they're _made_ special. Like HT's flickys. They're already hard to get and they always feel good to use, like a reward earned. If you *_HAD_* to use one character, it'd feel like the story is saying "this one specific guy is inherently better than everyone else, it's not that he necessarily earned it, he's just the only one that's allowed". Which doesn't feel nearly as rewarding. Some people just like to be, like... _big the cat._ Why can't he get a super form? This is a joke as an example by the by. Like, imagine Big, through sheer dumb luck, gets all 7 emeralds. Becomes SUPER BIG. He could be like a giga-maxed Pokémon. 😆🤣 Obviously Big wouldn't know what to do with all that power, so he'd probably just cause tons of chaos. Then, other named characters would have fight him like that just to calm him down. Like, Knuckles could have a call back by knocking the emeralds out of him. Causing the event that kicks off the plot. Like the emeralds being stolen or generally scattered to the wind. Idk about you, but to me that seems really interesting. I'd play/read/watch the hell out of that! And that's a good case for a.. super... *Big. The. Cat. . . .* It's not about devaluing it, because for every character it's all in the execution! 😀 If a case could be made for friggen Big The Cat, a case could be made for literally any other playable character. i will always remember in the Archie Sonic how Super Sonic and Hyper Knuckles were fighting Mammoth Mogul and Tails grabbed a cloak, 50 rings, intentionally got blasted by the chaos energy and turned into Turbo Tails
When I was younger, I always thought it was neat how Tails only had 'super' even after gathering Super Emeralds. Maybe Tails is already so awesome, he needed more juice to make a difference. Nah that's definitely not it.
Conspiracy theory time: with super sonic being shown off for frontiers so early it makes me think they have something bigger planned and with this new acknowledgement of hyper forms it makes me hopeful that *maybe* hyper sonic will make an appearance in frontiers.
Are you able to make a "Why Blaze Matters" video? I along with many people desperately want to see Sally and the Freedom Fighters return in some shape or form and its great to see Sega starting to bring back long lost elements, but the one character that I feel hasn't been given enough love and respect is Blaze the cat. After playing through the "dark age" Sonic games, I found Blaze's character and story from the Rush series to be one of the only bright spots of this era. I really loved her backstory as a child princess who was teased for her fire powers, her rivalry with Sonic, her friendship with Cream, and her goal to protect her people and the Sol Emeralds. She's also the only female Sonic character to acquire a form close to super. However, it seems like Sega just doesn't care that much about her and instead are just pushing her to the side. I'm glad their giving more attention to side characters like Amy, but it shouldn't come at the cost of others like Blaze. Imagine seeing a final boss fight where Burning Blaze fights alongside all 3 super hedgehogs and possibly Super Knuckles and Super Tails.
i always thought it was kinda neat that the most tech-savvy of the og characters, tails, ended up getting his most powerful form being one that *shares that power freely and openly with beings of nature* , as if deliberately empowering them to take vengeance against what had hurt them. to me it always felt like a really subtle point made about handling technology while keeping the needs of others in mind vs selfish technology. and i also just assumed tails got flickies because he understood how ridiculously hard it was to get to his point, and he wanted to share that, freely, with others who may not ever get that chance otherwise. sharing power vs hoarding it. etc etc. can you tell tails was my favorite?

16:00, As a Sonic x fan, I hope you do a why something matters for that anime. If you think that you not knowledgeable about it. Rewatch it again but I strongly recommend the Japanese version. I guarantee it is an awesome series. I know it was butchered in 4kids. Rewatching it again in Japanese made me feel emotions that we usually don’t get in the game series. And there is a plant girl who is important to our beloved fox boy that brings the best in him and my opinion the best version of the character. I just want to ad to things, for anyone that is interested. 1) Hyper Sonic didn't necessarily stop being canon until Sonic Origins, it was just abandoned. There are some mentions of the transformation and the Super Emeralds in some media, one of them being the recent Encyclo-speed-ia, so we can safely say that they were canon even before Sonic Origins. When the Sonic Team said they removed the Super Emeralds they're not refering to the canon, they just chose to ignore/return them to their normal forms without any explanation in the lore. Of course, is clear that the Sonic canon is being changed every now and then, so in any moment they can say that they were never canon or something, but that hasn't happened yet. 2) Ultra Sonic isn't the closest thing to Hyper Sonic in the Archie comics, Super Sonic is. Ultra Sonic is a state obtained by being empowered with enough chaos energy to achieve a transformation, but insufficient to achieve Super Form. That's why he transforms with a huge amount of rings, they give a lot of power, but not enough to become Super Sonic.
I've always thought the whole Super/Hyper forms situation for the other characters to be kind of dumb. Super forms shouldn't just be locked to the funny hedgehogs, at least in my opinion.
While I love your Sonic content (it is why I subbed), I do love your other videos too (maybe I just like your content). Your Klonoa videos were some of my favourite recently and has had me looking for copies for myself. So yes, I’d definitely be interested in a Klonoa lore video, and while I know you’ve been pigeon holed a bit, I do love your other non-Sonic content and am looking forward to what else you make!
When it comes to canonicity, the way I tend to look at it is that even if certain *events* aren't canon, they can still potentially give insights into characters and aspects of the world that are.
Flickies are describe as being near otherworldly. In Sonic 3D Blast, the Flickies are known to travel to other worlds/dimensions through the dimention rings that pop up on their island.

I played through all the games as Tails as soon as Sonic Origins came out, and was convinced I made the discovery first haha. I'm so glad that Tails can stand equally with Sonic & Knuckles now. Edit: For a fun fact, you can play as Super Tails in Sonic 2, you just have to spawn in a super monitor with debug.
Hyper Tails is really neat and we need to see the hyper forms when they're in absolute peril and they're going against someone they know they can't beat with the chaos emeralds. Hopefully Frontiers might do something with that.
l really wanted a Tails adventure 2. Just a solo outing or letting Tails take center stage is due for awhile now. I would prefer 2d level platform with return of battle Kukku, but I understand that reaching to a gamegear game isn't what most aonic audiences want. I just enjoy replaying the first game and reading the sonic universe issues every so often. Between Tail's inventions, hyper form and all his vehicles, I feel like there is pleanty of room for a game around him.
I think it mostly comes down to a difference in priorities. Sonic team created the 7th Chaos emerald because they wanted to give a better reward for getting all emeralds without contradicting Sonic 1. So, the reason became you needed 7 and there were only 6 on South Island in Sonic 1. Super Sonic could drown in Sonic 2 by accident as the developers forgot to disable this death potential for Super Sonic. Sonic 3 to keep consistency with Sonic 2 has Super Sonic still drown and makes unlimited underwater time a unique trait of the Hyper Form instead. And so Tails couldn't go Super in Sonic 2 so nether can he with the Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 3 and you can only get it by getting something that wasn't in Sonic 2 with the Super Emeralds (tails flying wasn't an issue as Tails in Sonic 2 could always fly in when he respawned) Nowadays was having all of the convenience features valued higher than not retconning or contradicting the previous games so we got Knuckles in Sonic 2 and Super Tails in 2 and 3. I'm almost surprised that Super Sonic can still drown actually.

My brother and I each have a volume of the Archie Comic that we got wwwwaaaayyyy back when we were kids in the 90's. Mine included that battle with Ixis Naugus where Hyper Tails made his debut. While the issue also included an origin for the villain, at least in regards to 3 ancient sorcerers racing to the sun or something, I never knew who the old man and the wookie were. My brother's comic was one where Sonic and Tails returned to an alternate dimension they'd visited previously where they'd encountered powerful goofballs Horizontal and Vertical, but now they were super serious robotic demigods at war with each other that brainwashed the two hero's into fighting a proxy battle that almost ended with Sonic killing Tails. Because these were our only Sonic comics, we didn't understand a whole lot, but they were cool and fun when we already enjoyed Sonic2+3+Knuckles on PC and were big fans of Sonic Underground with vague memories of Adventures and SatAM.
this video got me thinking about other seemingly forgotten Sonic forms, and my mind remembered what is probably the most underutilized Sonic form in the series, because as far as I'm aware it was only ever used a single time, that being Dark Sonic from Sonic X. And unironically, I love the idea of a Dark Sonic form, it's just such a cool and interesting idea, and I'd love to see future stories involving the form. I know there's some people who don't consider it canon, but I mean, a ton of people also didn't consider the Hyper forms canon, or say that the planet isn't named Mobius, and all this crap. In my eyes, Sonic X (mainly season 3) is one of the most interesting aspects of the franchise, simply due to how different it is from everything else, especially since despite the fact the series isn't considered canon, SEGA still references one of the characters via one of the plants in Tails' workshop (if you know you know, unironically a great and heartbreaking scene from the show). But that just shows that they aren't afraid of pulling from the show, even if it's "not canon". I think part of the reason I like Dark Sonic so much is due to the fact it adds to Sonic's character. The idea that he's normally collected and cool, but if you *really* cross the line, there's a possibility that he'll snap and turn Dark is such a cool idea, and it shows (mainly from the show) that he values his friends above all else, as he only turned into Dark Sonic due to seeing Cosmo the Seedrian and (yes) Chris Thorndyke hurt and kidnapped. It adds depth to his character, and I love it. Of course there's other forms that were ever only used once, I'm sure there's a bunch in the Archie comics. But Dark Sonic just feels different to me. Maybe it's because I grew up watching the show, or maybe it's because I genuinely enjoyed it, I don't know. And hell, maybe this is just a case where Sonic X in general has a lot to it that's underutilized or underappreciated. But I genuinely believe there was a lot there that could lead to some awesome stories. If you've never watched Sonic X, I'd greatly recommend it, especially Season 3 (since Seasons 1 and 2 are just retellings of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2). In the original Genesis release I always thought Tails' Super form being accessible only after getting all 14 emeralds was a way to balance the character out since he has the greatest mobility out of the three playable characters, or a way to establish him more as a supporting character since he never originally had a "Hyper" title. As a reward for not having any special form until much later I assumed that's why they made his Super form ridiculously overpowered.
My headcannon for the super and hyper forms are that the super forms only come from the chaos emeralds alone, and the hyper forms come from the unity of the chaos emeralds and the Master Emerald. That is why the hyper forms are only in Sonic 3 and Knuckles because that's when Sonic Tails and Knuckles all team up to stop Eggman with the power of all their powerful gems.
I mean the Chaos Emeralds being in the presence of the Master Emerald does transform them into Super Emeralds having the unity part being outright shown to us. And we know Hyper Forms come from Super Emeralds.
I was so excited when i decided to challenge myself to get all the chaos emeralds with tails *not must of a challenge, more easy mode but i digress* and found out about hyper I didnt use the net much back then, so it was a realy cool reward to do something you wouldnt normaly do.

It may have been very late in the Archie Comics, or in one of the later comic series, but there was a comic where Sonic had a giant emerald strapped to his back during some science experiment, and while he was running around, he started transforming into various Super forms (i.e. Super Sonic, Hyper Sonic, Ultra Sonic, Nova Sonic, Atomic Sonic, etc). I was surprised that they had finally shown the comic version of Hyper Sonic, but...it was very odd, and I remember there being a human-like scientist (not Robotnik/Eggman) overseeing the experiment from a castle balcony (but I had complete fallen away from reading Sonic comics at that point, and have no clue as to which part of the vast Sonic stories this event took place in).
I can agree on you on people saying it doesn’t matter since it isn’t canon, like just because Black Knight isn’t canon doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be acknowledged and given a story, I’m the type of dude to make my own timeline, I’ll still acknowledge the canon timeline but sometimes I like to make my own and make certain things like Hyper Sonic and Black Knight canon, though I guess nobody else has this creative mind. I don’t care if Hyper isn’t canon I just want to See him return in a new game

I hope they keep going with this concept because it means that there could be a point in the series where Super Sonic wont be enough to take down the final boss, maybe Hyper Sonic wont enough too, so we could see the hyper forms of other characters like Tails or Knuckles, or even Silver or Shadow I'd love a final boss that's so powerful that gives the perfect excuse to give other characters hyper forms so they can help hyper Sonic defeat it, giving Sonic a much needed debuff (as stated on one video that says that Sonic needs to have flaws and stop being so powerful which i kinda agree) and giving room for more character development to those PAINFULLY underused Sonic characters that Sega has no idea what to do with
Apparently Mania/Origins Super Tails was in one of the Sonic & Knuckles prototype builds, with Hyper Tails being well... Hyper Tails, so essentially beta canon is canon again
archie seemed to imply with the form ultra sonic in the comics which requires 1 super emerald that it's an inbetween with super and hyper considering it can change colours but much more slowly.

I've yet to see a source for when Iizuka said the Super Emeralds and Hyper forms are non-canon, only that they didn't want to use them.

I like that they're FINALLY acknowledging the "levels/layers" of Super forms and the Hyper forms.
I know lots of the canon and non-canonicity is everywhere but we have people and passionate fan behind every aspect of it.
Fun Fact: There's been talk about the story of Sonic Frontiers that Sonic's Super Form *"might not be enough to take down the titan bosses in the game"*
That *could* be a reference to Hyper Sonic or Dark Sonic or some other unique form that they're saving for when the game comes out, but at the very least they're starting to organize *some* form of canon/lore/story.

Actually, the Super Form is enough for the Titans, but the overall idea is that it might not be enough for the final boss of the game. Yeah, that's basically semantics, but still.

They're already hard to get and they always feel good to use, like a reward earned. If you *_HAD_* to use one character, it'd feel like the story is saying "this one specific guy is inherently better than everyone else, it's not that he necessarily earned it, he's just the only one that's allowed". Which doesn't feel nearly as rewarding. Some people just like to be, like... _big the cat._ Why can't he get a super form?

i will always remember in the Archie Sonic how Super Sonic and Hyper Knuckles were fighting Mammoth Mogul and Tails grabbed a cloak, 50 rings, intentionally got blasted by the chaos energy and turned into Turbo Tails

Are you able to make a "Why Blaze Matters" video? I along with many people desperately want to see Sally and the Freedom Fighters return in some shape or form and its great to see Sega starting to bring back long lost elements, but the one character that I feel hasn't been given enough love and respect is Blaze the cat. After playing through the "dark age" Sonic games, I found Blaze's character and story from the Rush series to be one of the only bright spots of this era. I really loved her backstory as a child princess who was teased for her fire powers, her rivalry with Sonic, her friendship with Cream, and her goal to protect her people and the Sol Emeralds. She's also the only female Sonic character to acquire a form close to super. However, it seems like Sega just doesn't care that much about her and instead are just pushing her to the side. I'm glad their giving more attention to side characters like Amy, but it shouldn't come at the cost of others like Blaze. Imagine seeing a final boss fight where Burning Blaze fights alongside all 3 super hedgehogs and possibly Super Knuckles and Super Tails.
i always thought it was kinda neat that the most tech-savvy of the og characters, tails, ended up getting his most powerful form being one that *shares that power freely and openly with beings of nature* , as if deliberately empowering them to take vengeance against what had hurt them. to me it always felt like a really subtle point made about handling technology while keeping the needs of others in mind vs selfish technology. and i also just assumed tails got flickies because he understood how ridiculously hard it was to get to his point, and he wanted to share that, freely, with others who may not ever get that chance otherwise. sharing power vs hoarding it. etc etc.

I guarantee it is an awesome series. I know it was butchered in 4kids. Rewatching it again in Japanese made me feel emotions that we usually don’t get in the game series. And there is a plant girl who is important to our beloved fox boy that brings the best in him and my opinion the best version of the character. I just want to ad to things, for anyone that is interested.
1) Hyper Sonic didn't necessarily stop being canon until Sonic Origins, it was just abandoned. There are some mentions of the transformation and the Super Emeralds in some media, one of them being the recent Encyclo-speed-ia, so we can safely say that they were canon even before Sonic Origins. When the Sonic Team said they removed the Super Emeralds they're not refering to the canon, they just chose to ignore/return them to their normal forms without any explanation in the lore. Of course, is clear that the Sonic canon is being changed every now and then, so in any moment they can say that they were never canon or something, but that hasn't happened yet.
2) Ultra Sonic isn't the closest thing to Hyper Sonic in the Archie comics, Super Sonic is. Ultra Sonic is a state obtained by being empowered with enough chaos energy to achieve a transformation, but insufficient to achieve Super Form. That's why he transforms with a huge amount of rings, they give a lot of power, but not enough to become Super Sonic.

I've always thought the whole Super/Hyper forms situation for the other characters to be kind of dumb. Super forms shouldn't just be locked to the funny hedgehogs, at least in my opinion.
While I love your Sonic content (it is why I subbed), I do love your other videos too (maybe I just like your content). Your Klonoa videos were some of my favourite recently and has had me looking for copies for myself.

When it comes to canonicity, the way I tend to look at it is that even if certain *events* aren't canon, they can still potentially give insights into characters and aspects of the world that are.
Flickies are describe as being near otherworldly. In Sonic 3D Blast, the Flickies are known to travel to other worlds/dimensions through the dimention rings that pop up on their island.

I played through all the games as Tails as soon as Sonic Origins came out, and was convinced I made the discovery first haha. I'm so glad that Tails can stand equally with Sonic & Knuckles now.
Edit: For a fun fact, you can play as Super Tails in Sonic 2, you just have to spawn in a super monitor with debug.

Hyper Tails is really neat and we need to see the hyper forms when they're in absolute peril and they're going against someone they know they can't beat with the chaos emeralds. Hopefully Frontiers might do something with that.
l really wanted a Tails adventure 2. Just a solo outing or letting Tails take center stage is due for awhile now. I would prefer 2d level platform with return of battle Kukku, but I understand that reaching to a gamegear game isn't what most aonic audiences want. I just enjoy replaying the first game and reading the sonic universe issues every so often.
Between Tail's inventions, hyper form and all his vehicles, I feel like there is pleanty of room for a game around him.

I think it mostly comes down to a difference in priorities.
Sonic team created the 7th Chaos emerald because they wanted to give a better reward for getting all emeralds without contradicting Sonic 1. So, the reason became you needed 7 and there were only 6 on South Island in Sonic 1.
Super Sonic could drown in Sonic 2 by accident as the developers forgot to disable this death potential for Super Sonic. Sonic 3 to keep consistency with Sonic 2 has Super Sonic still drown and makes unlimited underwater time a unique trait of the Hyper Form instead.
And so
Tails couldn't go Super in Sonic 2 so nether can he with the Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 3 and you can only get it by getting something that wasn't in Sonic 2 with the Super Emeralds (tails flying wasn't an issue as Tails in Sonic 2 could always fly in when he respawned)
Nowadays was having all of the convenience features valued higher than not retconning or contradicting the previous games so we got Knuckles in Sonic 2 and Super Tails in 2 and 3. I'm almost surprised that Super Sonic can still drown actually.

My brother and I each have a volume of the Archie Comic that we got wwwwaaaayyyy back when we were kids in the 90's. Mine included that battle with Ixis Naugus where Hyper Tails made his debut. While the issue also included an origin for the villain, at least in regards to 3 ancient sorcerers racing to the sun or something, I never knew who the old man and the wookie were.
My brother's comic was one where Sonic and Tails returned to an alternate dimension they'd visited previously where they'd encountered powerful goofballs Horizontal and Vertical, but now they were super serious robotic demigods at war with each other that brainwashed the two hero's into fighting a proxy battle that almost ended with Sonic killing Tails.
Because these were our only Sonic comics, we didn't understand a whole lot, but they were cool and fun when we already enjoyed Sonic2+3+Knuckles on PC and were big fans of Sonic Underground with vague memories of Adventures and SatAM.

this video got me thinking about other seemingly forgotten Sonic forms, and my mind remembered what is probably the most underutilized Sonic form in the series, because as far as I'm aware it was only ever used a single time, that being Dark Sonic from Sonic X. And unironically, I love the idea of a Dark Sonic form, it's just such a cool and interesting idea, and I'd love to see future stories involving the form. I know there's some people who don't consider it canon, but I mean, a ton of people also didn't consider the Hyper forms canon, or say that the planet isn't named Mobius, and all this crap.
In my eyes, Sonic X (mainly season 3) is one of the most interesting aspects of the franchise, simply due to how different it is from everything else, especially since despite the fact the series isn't considered canon, SEGA still references one of the characters via one of the plants in Tails' workshop (if you know you know, unironically a great and heartbreaking scene from the show). But that just shows that they aren't afraid of pulling from the show, even if it's "not canon".
I think part of the reason I like Dark Sonic so much is due to the fact it adds to Sonic's character. The idea that he's normally collected and cool, but if you *really* cross the line, there's a possibility that he'll snap and turn Dark is such a cool idea, and it shows (mainly from the show) that he values his friends above all else, as he only turned into Dark Sonic due to seeing Cosmo the Seedrian and (yes) Chris Thorndyke hurt and kidnapped. It adds depth to his character, and I love it.
Of course there's other forms that were ever only used once, I'm sure there's a bunch in the Archie comics. But Dark Sonic just feels different to me. Maybe it's because I grew up watching the show, or maybe it's because I genuinely enjoyed it, I don't know. And hell, maybe this is just a case where Sonic X in general has a lot to it that's underutilized or underappreciated. But I genuinely believe there was a lot there that could lead to some awesome stories. If you've never watched Sonic X, I'd greatly recommend it, especially Season 3 (since Seasons 1 and 2 are just retellings of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2). I normally called him Turbo Tails. I felt Tails was always underated.
In the original Genesis release I always thought Tails' Super form being accessible only after getting all 14 emeralds was a way to balance the character out since he has the greatest mobility out of the three playable characters, or a way to establish him more as a supporting character since he never originally had a "Hyper" title. As a reward for not having any special form until much later I assumed that's why they made his Super form ridiculously overpowered.
My headcannon for the super and hyper forms are that the super forms only come from the chaos emeralds alone, and the hyper forms come from the unity of the chaos emeralds and the Master Emerald. That is why the hyper forms are only in Sonic 3 and Knuckles because that's when Sonic Tails and Knuckles all team up to stop Eggman with the power of all their powerful gems.
I mean the Chaos Emeralds being in the presence of the Master Emerald does transform them into Super Emeralds having the unity part being outright shown to us. And we know Hyper Forms come from Super Emeralds.

It may have been very late in the Archie Comics, or in one of the later comic series, but there was a comic where Sonic had a giant emerald strapped to his back during some science experiment, and while he was running around, he started transforming into various Super forms (i.e. Super Sonic, Hyper Sonic, Ultra Sonic, Nova Sonic, Atomic Sonic, etc). I was surprised that they had finally shown the comic version of Hyper Sonic, but...it was very odd, and I remember there being a human-like scientist (not Robotnik/Eggman) overseeing the experiment from a castle balcony (but I had complete fallen away from reading Sonic comics at that point, and have no clue as to which part of the vast Sonic stories this event took place in).

Apparently Mania/Origins Super Tails was in one of the Sonic & Knuckles prototype builds, with Hyper Tails being well... Hyper Tails, so essentially beta canon is canon again

archie seemed to imply with the form ultra sonic in the comics which requires 1 super emerald that it's an inbetween with super and hyper considering it can change colours but much more slowly.
