Don't forget among the character actors the amazing John Cazale, taken too early by lung cancer at age 37. While he appeared in only 5 films (one being "The Deerhunter") all of them were nominated for the Academy award for Best Picture. He was highly underated and overlooked amongst The Godfather cast but what a performance he put in as Fredo, the weak minded older brother of Pacino's character "Michael". A little known fact was that he was a longtime friend of Pacino. One can only think of what other magnificent roles he might have turned in had he lived a full life.

And Coppola had trouble getting financing for the movie. I swear I get on a time machine, get rich and pay for the movie on condition I'm there through all the filming...
You can see Coppola's wisdom casting Brando in this clip: they all looked up to him as the actor of actors, so it would be easier to convey that feeling to their characters. I'm still amazed that the "executives" didn't get it.
Fer Abra They got it, they just didnt care. Brando mightve changed acting, but he was also box office poison and hadnt made a hit in over 10 years. To them casting him almost garunteed the movie was gnna flop since they were convinced the "brando fad" was over.
Dizzy Blu Which only goes to show that the execs didn't have a clue. Just because they stick a label of "poison" on someone doesn't make it so. Dizzy Blu , I remember watching "On The Waterfront" in a class I was taking in High School. I think it was introduction to film, or something like that, around 1971-72. Then I see "The Godfather" and I loved the movie and everyone in it gave what I thought were the best acting performances I had ever seen. It was quite awhile later that I realized it was Marlon Brando in both movies. (could have something to do with the little hand rolled cigarettes I was smoking around this time) Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is "The Godfather" impacted a new generation, one that was not very familiar with Mr. Brando's previous films. I've noticed lately, especially The Marvel movies, try to play to all generations, by using music from the 70's-80's to draw in more than just the younger ones.
@@ferabra8939 Brando movies were banned in South in 60s because he was the strong activist for civil rights. That was the only reason of his box office poison. Movies were great. An excellent movie with a young James Caan is "The Gambler" with Lauren Hutton, about a college professor with a bad gambling addiction. There is a remake, I think with Mark Walberg which like the remake of Rollerball was awful.

The only actor who was at his level was Montgomery Clift, unfortunately he had that car accident that destroyed his life.
He actually did Marlon impersonation really well.
