"Educational"... not so sure about that. Nobody in their right mind would start dismantling bike and clothing to find north. He would simply look at the sun and instantly know where north is. You should take note of what date this video was posted ;-) It was a great video though. As comedy.

Hey Ryan! I know you wont read this, but I just wanted to thank you as this video saved my ass out in the wilds of BC. After smashing my kick stand on my KTM 690 i lost the magnet that makes my side stand swich work which resulted in me having a bike that wouldnt run in gear. Using the magnet making instruction that I just so happened to see in your vid before heading out, I was able to turn an Allen key from my tool kit in to a magnet that miraculously worked with my kickstand switch! 5 zip ties later and I was on my way from chehalis back to chilliwack. Thanks for saving me a 40k walk back to Harrison, and for making me feel like macgyver.

@Quirin M. I guess it's safety to not start with your kickstand down. A few days ago i saw a guy almost crash because his kickstand was down. Doing 50kmh or 31mph. They need an other way though. Maybe a switch you can tape if the kickstand breaks? I don't know. Weird.

That way if your bike dies, you can take the spare (your friends) and get home.
If they're a real friend, you'll bring them with you.

Most of it is legit
Everything up until the end is legitimate. But, some of it is only to be done in extreme emergency. I wouldn't use tire to store water, if there was any viable alternative. And the whistle thing is great, but whistles are so small that you can easily store one on the bike at all times.
While you are very unlikely to need to use any of these tips, they are still scientifically accurate. Good for you, Ryan, in making something amusing yet educational during these dark times.
Check trees behind you, moss grows on North face so basic direction. No trees, bloody plant one wait for it to grow. :-) boss video once again.
Vazza yzf750,that varies based on location and species of moss. Most such species have no compass dependent preference, and instead grow wherever they can get adequate light and water, and where they’re protected from excessive wind.

As a survival istructor i love the creativity flowing from this video. About water remember that you can cook water in plastic bottle or in this case in rubber. Remember to asses resources from the closest enivroment not to waste energy and remember the rule of 3's. It will pull you out from a lot of trouble. Also carying a knife, small fire starting kit, water (best in metal conteiner to boil it safely) and warm spare layer will save you a lot of time and resources.
It's incredible how good this channel is.

It always makes me smile when I hear Canadians, so different to Americans but so similar to Brits. I'll visit BC one of these days hopefully in the coming 5yrs. I know I will as the wife wants to visit there, so there's no arguments what the boss wants the boss gets. It's the recipe for a successful relationship.
None of the safety standards could ever convince me to install rear view mirrors on my bike more than this video.!
I wouldn't go that far in that woods without a sack of basics. Fire,, water, knife, food, rescue, navigation.

I was expecting a April's Fool video, my friend already texted me my bike was missing, I was on my bike when I got the message.
and to add one more, grease makes a good sunscreen, at least you can do eye black.
I used to use old army webbing as I toured on my XR250 & XL600 as the weight sat on my hips when seated, was also in a good position when i stood on the pegs, was super durable & cheap, and when my bike threw a chain, or some other mishap, i could drag it off the road and hide it in the bush, and hitch or walk out, and retrieve my bike later. This meant that i always had some food, water, basic survival equipment, and didn't mess up the bikes balance, poise, or crack the subframe (again) with lots of gear or fuel. Very good video

Well the problem most often is..parents think their teenage kids AREN'T concerned enough about their own safety. Why? What's the ONE thing you teens never( or wait until the last part to do something about or talk about) talk about when trying to convince the parents to let you get one?
GEAR. PPE. ..Armored Gear from head to toe. And at LEAST the helmet should be hi visibility if not both helmet and the jacket.
In the parents' minds, their son or daughter is never concerned about protecting themselves and the teens never put that as the FIRST purchasing priority. You all want the bike first ..and the gear either never or half assed AFTER buying the bike.
You can talk about taking the MSF courses all ya want, but until you realize you need to convince your parents that you ARE taking your safety seriously enough by talking about what gear you're buying and explaining what you know about the gear you'll be buying, your parents won't hear jack shit of what you're saying.
Gear..first, MSF second, THEN the bike ( if applicable in that order. In my area...the MSF courses require that you bring your own bike..which sucks but whatever.. So I bought my gear first, then researched the bike I felt was reasonable in terms of weight and overall power...something light weight and not a damn crock rocket for me, and finally bought the bike. I had to buy the bike first before I could take the MOtorcycle endorsement test to get my license, so when I bought the bike, I ensured I already had a motorcycle dolly assembly ready to connect to my car TO ...tow the bike home. Then I practiced in my neighborhood in a local big church empty parking lot around 3 to 4 solid days, then made some laps within the neighborhood, then local 35mph frontage roads - a span of time around 2 weeks of practicing daily -, then I towed my bike to the endorsement testing center and had a family member drive my car back home behind me after passing the test .
So, research some decent gear ( yes..this will cost around 800 bucks or more head to toe..easily. That is normal. ) Talk about the gear to them first, then explain about the safety risks you've read about online involving intersections, the most common ways bikers wreck and die, that you'll practice always looking for an escape path and learn to watch the front tires of cars looking like they will pull out in front of you.
It's LITTLE things like these conversational tidbits that show them you ARE aware, wade awake and not just wanting to get on two wheels and burn rubber like a squid idiot.
Legit though Bayek. If you need some gear recommendations or other info ( I'm no expert but have a good 1.5 years under my belt of daily riding across two bikes), let me know. Cheers and good luck.

Motoryzen Yeah, almost all I’ve talked about is gear and how safe some of the stuff I’m looking at is. I’ve also talked to them about how I won’t ride late at night, how I’ll never ride without gear, etc. Thanks for the tips tho, my guy.
Save your money up and just do the course. Mine weren't impressed all those years ago. They got over it.

Another quick way to know where's north is by checking what direction the Sun is moving. It goes from East to West. Facing East, North is to your left hand side.

Great basic vid again my friend! Being in Canada, survival a few miles from town/home can resort to this type of thing as in remote areas.. Riding, most definitely! You can also use the turn signal lenses for your magnet compass. Keep the water lower than the edge to reduce wind. Also makes a cup. engine covers can convert to bowls, etc. Make a sun dial with a stick/spoke stuck in the ground Side Mirror can be used with bright sun to make fire. Battery IS a great source for so many reasons. As you showed a little gas on a stick/rag is a great fire starter for difficult wood. The bike can be a true life saver. Being a native Alaskan and living in remote areas, we know so much of this to stay alive. I always carry a simple survival kit and tarp just in case on my bike and in my car. Its just what what we used to do in Alaska. The biggest thing is not to panic and think rationally. I teach this now that I have retired from mil/law enforcement.
If you were my teacher back in the day, I wouldn’t fail in science classes so much. I really enjoy this kind of vids, education made entertaining 👍

When hunting rabbit you should always use a 50cal rifle as it has more stopping power than your arrow. Plus if your attacked by a Bigfoot which i know your plagued with in your area you really should be using hollow point ammo. I also am a big fan of the A-team.

I moved to the Mojave desert in 1986 . My back yard was literally 200+ square miles of an environment I liken to the moon .
I loved taking off to points unknown and did so as soon as I arrived . My roommate told me that if I crash or get stranded to set my bike on fire . Of course I thought he was nuts !!! He then explained that you can easily see 50 miles and if anyone sees a big black plume they will come to put it out and then find you .
My bike did have an electrical problem one day and I had to leave it in the middle of nowhere and walk 10 miles home .
In the 4 years I lived there ( I rode all of the time ) , luckily I never burned a bike
I've seen a thousand demonstrations on "how to build a fire" all good to know, but why doesn't anyone EVER say "while you're at it, throw a few lighters in the bike"? I keep like 5 Bic lighters on my bike.

As I live in the UK and don't exactly do any adventuring, what are the PLB and Spot? I'm guessing some kind of distress beacon but the part of the UK I live in is incredibly populated and at worst I'd need to walk for an hour to find a village where I can ask for help so I have never looked into them.
Steppy20 the PLB is a one way radio device that communicates to a rescue satellite. You pull the tab, and it sends your location data to local (government) rescue. A Spot is a 2-way satellite where you can send short (pre written) messages to friends or call SOS (private sector organized) rescue. On the other hand, and I know it's a less exciting video, but I highly suggest just bringing a compass, whistle, firestarter, and collapsible bottle anytime you go out in the woods. Takes less space than my tool kit. The mirror trick is genius, though. Didn't even occur to me until now.

Great info for those who don't have survival education. If you are out of range or don't see airplanes it's pretty easy to do SOS with a spark gap device that will have range to any ground radios etc. 8) Remember also though, drinking unboiled water can end up finishing your journey with gut wrenching pains and diarrhea. Best to stay by camp long enough to boil that if possible. Also, always leave an arrow on the ground pointing the direction you leave and make little arrows or break twigs along the way, if you aren't staying with the vehicle. That way if someone sends help, they know where to go get you if your quick fix orienteering doesn't pan out. ;)

A thought that crossed my mind: can't you look at the sun? If your "compass" is 16 degrees off, I figure a good guess after looking at the sun is about as accurate
@@imthedarknight-8755 You could use an analog watch too (technically that might not be a part of the bike). Knowing that your compass will be 16 degrees off to the east, you can compensate for that. Magnetic declination affects good commercial compasses too.
People knowing that might have brought a map and a compass anyway.
Here's another navigation trick from an old geologist: the analog watch compass. Point the hour hand of the watch at the sun and halfway between 12 and the hour hand is south (in the northern hemisphere, points north in the southern hemisphere). Came in handy in the pre-GPS days working in the vicinity of magnetic north (or near large magnetite deposits) when all else crapped out. YMMV.

If you can't tell N from S on your homemade compass by looking at the position of the sun, the right hand rule might be a little out of your league or you live in a super cloudy area that probably has lots of moss on the trees, but as a fellow nerd, I applaud the effort. Great vid!

I watch everything from Auto-Centric to Xylophone Repair (couldn't come up with a valid "Z") and Race/All Terrain/Off Road/4X4 to DIY of every topic and I do not see the consistent high quality and creative thoughtfulness of F9.
