- Today on Buckle Up, Harry & Rob take the new 2024 BYD Dolphin EV for a spin. Offering up to 204 horsepower and 265 miles of range, with prices starting from around 26k, the BYD has a lot to offer. But, can it hang with established players from VW, MG and Stellantis?
The BYD's main rivals are the MG4, VW ID.3, Kia Soul EV, Hyundai Kona EV, Smart #1, Fiat 500 electric, Mini Electric, Cupra Born, ORA Funky Cat and Nissan Leaf, but it will also be up against both Piston and Hybrid rivals such as the VW Golf, Ford Focus, Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Peugeot 308, Citroën C4, Vauxhall Astra, Skoda Scala, Seat Leon, Fiat Tipo, BMW 1 Series, Mercedes Benz A Class and Audi A3.

Buckle Up is a channel that is only interested in one thing - cars!
We upload a myriad of different content including car review videos, car challenge videos, car news videos and much, much more!
Our videos are made in a similar style to that of Top Gear, Fifth Gear, Car Throttle, Doug DeMuro, carwow, Carfection, The Grand Tour, MotorTrend and many more.
We would all thoroughly recommend their channels, so why not go and check them out.
I absolutely love mine. Recently had the cupra born, niro ev and mg4.(Mg dealership back up was dreadful )😂Covered 7k in months. Oh and achieved 5.9 to 60 in the cold wet 5deg uk roads. If it has ling long tyres get them changed!!!! My only gripe is the air vent glare on the windscreen. Its really nice when people chat to me about it.
Glad you’re enjoying yours! Thanks for watching!
Glad you like the BYD, I'm going to test drive tomorrow and then see what the dealership can offer as part exchange. I've only had my BMW i3 for a year and hopefully they could do a deal on my settlement so i don't pay too much money for part ex.
@@badboy250984 I hope that you enjoy the test drive and are happy with the financial arrangement.
I am thinking of getting one, but will probably buy it next year in order for the dealer network to improve. The nearest dealer is about 30 miles away.
Any scratches and dents? Worried about the paint.
@@rayli6427 What do you mean scratches and dent?
From this year, BYD will be available in Switzerland and Greece.
Though Greece will not get the Dolphin initially; only the Atto 3 and Seal.
After those, I think BYD should come to more of the CEE countries (Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, etc.)
Great facts 👍
The Dolphin is available in Greece for a craaazy price. It's at 26380 for the 60 kwh Comfort spec. For comparison the cheapest 64 Kwh MG4 is 36750 with nowhere near as good specs. I loved the dynamics of the MG4 but for almost two thirds the price I can't ignore the Dolphin.
@@seakayakingingreece9915 I think the Dolphin arrived in Greece a few months or weeks after the Atto 3 and Seal’s launch to the market.
@@DaveDVideoMaker you are correct
@@seakayakingingreece9915 I really hope the rest of the Balkan countries can have BYD.
Swipe down from the top of the screen and you get quick access functions like seat heating 😉
We prefer shouting at the screen
Good car
Good comment 😅
Okay, so that's Harry. Good to meet him. Only heard of him from the previous comment. Love everything BYD. New subbie here. Say hi to Rob. Lovely review.
Thanks for watching! Rob says hi back.
I think it could do VERY well competing with "Just get me from A to B" entry level EVs (and even gas cars). The self-driving, heat pump, and other luxury features on the base level BYD cars are a HUGE bonus, but It's kind of bland looking, maybe even ugly, and performs "just adequately" as can be expected from a city/commuter car. I think it will compete with cars like the Renault Zoe, Peugeot e-208 and VW e-UP.
The MG4 is a bit more of a hot hatch -- something that appeals to people who care a lot about the looks and performance of a car, and that's a very different audience I think.
The performance would really surprise you! And it's not adequate , ask the plenty of hot hatches that I've annoyed. I've had the MG4 and didnt enjoy the driving position or the looks. 0-60 out performs the MG4 and so does reliability, dealership back up and efficiency.those cars you mentioned don't even come close to the shove and go that the dolphin has. Also none have near 200bhp or the torque it produces, and 0-60 I've had 5.9 in the cold wet UK roads...
@odw32 Have you driven an MG4? It's slightly more lively than it's closest rivals but in standard form it's a long way from hot hatch dynamically
@@BuckleUpShow me or odw32? If me yep, don't like the looks, see them everywhere and the xpower was a one trick pony with a shocking efficiency if driven like it should.(Test drove for a while? Also dealers are not great.,..

"Hey BYD. What's in the box?" 😂😂 Perhaps this should be the benchmark for all voice commands in modern cars?
As long as it doesn't reply "because I envy your normal life, it seems envy is my sin"
My cousin who lives in China purchased a new one of these for around £10,000 lol
Good for them
Does buying a Byd build jobs in Europe 🤔
Yes, they have an ever growing dealership support network across the UK and the rest of Europe, employing thousands.
You guys and Al are hilarious
Thanks for watching!
A lot of window wipers on the drivers side. The car looks cramped on driver and passenger sides.
It’s actually surprisingly roomy given it’s smaller than it’s closest rivals
It does look like a smaller version of a Nissan leaf and is a five seater?
Not to us, we think it looks quite good. Yes, it’s a five seater.
The cameras have wide angle lenses that tend to make things look smaller than they actually are. The screen is big but it looks small in this video.
@BS-ql5nl I'm selling my 2013 Nissan Leaf and swapping to a Dolphin. 4.45m vs 4.3m but the Dolphin uses its space much better e.g. lower floor, no transmission tunnel for the rear middle passenger. Panoramic roof helps any car feel more spacious too.
No height adjustments on an electric passanger heated seat seems a bit mean.
It’s fairly standard on smaller, less expensive cars.
Sorry but that car is just so pig ugly I wouldn't consider exchanging my MG4 for one of theose even f you paid me a lot of money.
I’m afraid we don’t have any money to pay you
You don't look at the mantle piece, when you poke the fire 😂
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say! Anyway this is obviously a good EV. Good price, good range, good tech. However for me the styling of the MG4 is far superior. I even disagree with the review here and would say the MG4 interior is better (apart from the sunroof of the Dolphin which is nice). Also the Dolphin is front wheel drive which counts against it in my book. For me a good EV but not serious competition for the MG4.
After travelling some 8,000 Klms, we find that the Dolphin is a very complete and capable car.😉👍
But that is a car you are on about not a woman, you need help ASAP.
