Crazy how i recently borrowed the AR recently to swap my 3k, and then you come out with this haha. I feel a LOT of what you're mentioning.. 1/4 of the way through and im interested in hearing your thoughts about "slicing"
Hey Ricky, I don't say much about slicing because I am not expecting the AR to be that machine with advanced slicing. But I am very curious to see your take on it, can't wait for your video.
I feel like slicing is just going to be like Digitakt. But with everyone having a phone or laptop, you can just use something like koala sampler, create a loop and record on the analog rytm. Filter, add some more layers and you should be going.
Bear in mind I don't own it (yet) but I've been analysing this thing for years now and the workflow I mentioned I've tried it on the Digitakt with good results.
I ended up getting the Digitakt first but I think now I got the Elektron taste I can upgrade to this machine.
@@txbrown_ Honestly just sold my Digitakt to get the rest of the money I need to purchase one of these. Excited for it.
@@khairitannur I'm still on the fence even after spending hours yesterday (yet) researching again. Probably I should just order it and try it for a couple of days.
@@txbrown_ It was toss up between this and digitakt, I got AR and glad I did.
Finally someone doing hip hop w a rytm. I feel like the hip hop community been sleeping on this machine. Built in compressors filters etc etc. I totally agree w everything you said btw. Great video
yes !! bought rhythm for hip hop stuff
@@KW-zs7zv me too!
I’ve owned many samplers and drum machines over the years including the live and X.
The power and creativity of elektron sequencer is unique and unparalleled.
At first the elektron workflow was a bit to heady for me but I fought thru it and fell in love.
Still haven’t scratched the surface on all that elektron can do and that’s exciting!
I’m also currently using the analog Rytm to create sample based music with chops etc so I was excited to see your input and enthusiasm about this machine.
When using mpc I always used another xox style drum machine to accompany so having it all in one with not just a drum machine but an absolute stunning drum machine is just great.
Mpc also missing the step length per track which is great for polyrhythmic type stuff.
Overbrige is one thing you didn’t touch on which is also quite helpful.
I second your feelings on connecting with this machine like no other. Like the day I got my first 2000xl.
Looking forward to future vids!
Appreciate you and what you do!
Much love and thanks.
Thanks Mark, the Rytm is a fun and powerful machine, I'm happy I had the chance to try it out. I didn't get a chance to try everything with the Rytm like midi and overbridge but I am certain that it would complement the mpc a lot with the step sequencer.
The mpc does length per track but it's not like the Rytm. Much more advanced than the mpc.
Thanks for the support Mark.
I'm still sold on the MPC Live...ive had it for 3 years without a computer. I can do anything and everything I try to accomplish pretty fast. I really haven't run into any trouble so far. I understand we get bored with the same gear...but if it ain't broke don't fix it👍. I enjoy your videos and breakdowns. Thanx for your inspiration🤚
Mpc is one of the best and it will always be. I'm just praising a great work done by Elektron, they deserve this one.
sup perry. i'm considering gettin the live ii. one effect that i really love is a pulsating lfo modulation. is your live good for this? thanks.
I love the Elektron interface and workflow. One you get some muscle memory going they're amazing. Even the 'happy accidents' you get with the sequencer are fun.
However, Elektron devices are harder for me to get to a finished track, an MPC is way better at that - if you consider hardware only. (Yes, I use Overbridge)
They're very creative sketchbooks. Worth every penny.
Totally agree, its not a jack of all trades, but what it does it does exceptionally well. The only thing I wish it had was stereo sampling but with some nice effects or creating panning its never really an issue.
Glad you've discovered how great the Elektron workflow is for beat making! I use the Digitakt and an Analog Heat which is an awesome combo - considering maybe adding an Empress Zioa or similar for more FX. I previously had an Octatrack which I loved but gain staging / balancing levels was too much hassle - but I do miss the OT! I hope Elektron create a hybrid of the OT and Analog RYTM - with the OTs workflow with better fx and the crossfader, scenes etc but with the Analog RYTMs pads (better pads) and analog filters and compressor - and Overbridge of course. That's my dream machine.
Yes, would love to see that
Yeah I prefer the bright grey. But seems like they have discontinued that one. It's just easier on the eyes than a black one.
I agree with everything you have said. For what it is and what it does is amazing. The user interface is like no other and it feels great to play ... and it looks beautiful too (agree also with your comment regarding the newer black version. I personally much prefer the grey one too, it will age better and down the road will become a classic)
I was an early adopter of the MK1 and fell in love the same way. But after a while you realize the drum synth engines aren’t the greatest and it definitely has a “sound”. I know the same could be said for a lot of instruments, but maybe it just wasn’t for me in the end.
A tip though if to add a folder of single-cycle waveforms to create more synthesis in the Rytm since you can loop samples. It opened things up more for me.
@@ftj4441 not sure where in my comment you got the comparison to vintage gear. If you wanna spend $4k on a 909 then feel free! I just enjoy the sound design and process from my modular system more. I still enjoy music made on Elektron machines, but I personally couldn’t justify keeping it in my space.
@@ftj4441 thank you
@@ftj4441 The older analog machines had a kind of charm.Newer ones like this and the tempest sound a bit harsh.So......But yeah
Finally a review that focuses on this aspect
Its the man not just the machine. Its about the music. The end result.
Man if you get results from it then stick with it. Find what works for you. Me its my ipad and some apps. I can do what can be done on any hardware for beatmaking. Just got to find your workflow.
@@ftj4441 Maybe ha ha. My friend had a few of them and he really enjoyed them but I still stand by my statement. Listen to early hip hop with many many great tracks produced with limited sampling time. That proves limitations and the mind can yield good results. This is self evident. Its always the creative mind ultimately. I have seen many youtubers with lots of flashy kit who make medicorce dull unimaginative beats that could be made easily on an ipad thus proving my point.
@@ftj4441 And you dont need elektron boxes to make dope beats. The end.
@@ftj4441 Thanks for your comments. My mind is my only limitation not the device. You can make beats on tin cans.
@@ftj4441 I meant make beats ha ha. Sample them into any device that has sampling abilities.
You sold me on the nudging ability
I'm about to sell mine. I love how feature packed it is, it's built super well and sturdy, but the analog voices just... aren't good. I've been trying to like it for 3 years. I have an Alpha Base and Tanzbar 2 as well as an MPC Live and several other digital drum machines. The other two analog machines I mentioned have a very unique and pleasing analog sound. The Rytm though, just doesn't have that effect on me. It has it's own sound but it's almost sterile. Don't get me wrong, I have respect for the thing, it's just lacking something. The fact that the bass tom is a better source for analog kicks than the actual bass drum voice is a bit silly. The Snare is just weak and limited, I'm talking the analog voice alone, it all has potential when you add samples. The toms are weak except the bass tom as a kick. I think the best analog voice out of Rytm is the cymbals, those are pretty good. Anyway, who am I, I'm just rambling my opinions and perhaps someone may read this and agree or use this to guide their future purchases. Oh and the dvco, it's got like 60 different wave settings but they're almost all unusable. I wasn't able to get a decent sound out of the thing. There's no simple square or sine wave, it's all harsh sounding saw wave stuff. If you want raw analog warmth, crunch, color, etc. Get an Alpha Base or TB2. The toms on the TB2 are reason enough alone to buy it. The kick and FM synth on the AB are the reason for it. Plus it looks dope.
I was looking into this for the interface and the sequencer alone, plain, simple and straight forward.I would definitely go for it if it wasn't limited to 8 voices and 33 seconds of sampling time as well as the fact that doesn't has the stereo sampling option,is why i think I wouldn't cope with it.
But then I look at MPC Live and honestly the whole menu digging is really counter intuitive when I am working.Instead of messing with the samples or with the parameters to creat something I am messing with the menu of MPC Live.
I am thinking pretty seriously about getting something like the SP-16 with a similar step sequencer and analogue filters and pairing it with a multi track digital recorder to deal with issues like limited internal memory rather than digging into a counter intuitive menu.
I can't understand why companies limit sampling time so much, makes no sense.
@@mpchead Uhmm, from understanding it has to do with pricing and operating systems.
Don't get into the mentality of comparing it to latest Akai products, because there is no way a European company would ever get the deals that Akai has (especially since Akai is directly supported by inMusic, the company behind any DJ gear, and mcs that has tons of high quality software focused chips etc.).
In general Elektron should be seen as the company that does so well its gear that is aimed at a specific audience that breaks its own limits, entering to new markets as well (like the hip hop beatmaking market).
Just for the sake of justifying the praise of Elektron,if we would compare Elektron Rytm to SP-16 of Pioneer(a company that has both the knowledge, budget and connections to get great gear out) Rytm has proven to be a lot more capable and most importantly trustworthy.
The Rytm was not meant to be a replacement for a DAW. It is a drum machine for making beats. So if you are looking for a DAW replacement, this isn't for you. I love the Elektron instrument philosophy. I have an Octatrack, Digitakt, Digitone, Analog 4 mk1 and a ryrm mk1. You can make a full track in any one of these machines if you embrace the limitations and the creativity. But working with them together really opens up what you can do. The octatrack is still one of the coolest sampler ever made. I think it is worth checking out. It is very complex with a deep learning curve, but well worth the investment.
Octatrack is in a class of its own for sure. very powerful machine in soo many diff ways
How about the sound between octa and rhythm? Is the same? I wanna try octa or rhytm to make beats, lofi, boom bap
I'm going for the s2400
Me too I'll definetly get one...
In 2021
Looks really fun to use imma look more into it! Cool video man
Would be awesome if the next iteration of this box allows selectable cutoffs. Chopping samples into 1/4 note chunks that cut each other off would be fly.
I think this should be possible with the shared voices and using sound locks. Lmk if you can’t run with that and I’ll outline the process.
Great overview, looking forward to getting one of these someday. PS-what are your favorite speakers you own/would recommend for a medium space? thanks.
Good Job making Hip Hop on the rytm MK2
I'm surprised the MPC 'gang' didn't flip a lid, since they cannot seem to even get along with each other..I will have a peek at the Elektron because i do WAY more than just rip records with the samplers I do have.I do tend to like what's different out there like my PolyEnd Tracker..
tutorials????
I agree with this review. The rytm make me want to tweak out on sounds. So fun.
Thanks for the great video. Nice to see that you dig the Elektron workflow. If you ever get the chance to try out the combination of an MPC with an Analog Four, please try it out, I think you will really enjoy it.
I had to return it for now, but in the future it'll definitely be something that I want to try.
elektron always nails it on the vibes of their mashines
Great insight, cheers dude!
An Octatrack but with a decent screen and drum pads. If they did, it would be the first decent screen they have ever made.
man i have one of these joints, i haven't found a way to incorporate it into my workflow, id love to see how you go about making a track with it from start to finish man.
Wow awesome I have been looking at this machine. I have a digitone and love it but also love my mpc and force workflows. You made a lot of really good points. Thank you 🙏 stay safe
New to your channel and digging it. Would love to see more Rytm content.
thanks 🙏🏼
I get where you are coming from regarding the general usefulness of this machine as a "workstation". However, this is just a drum machine in the traditional sense, all old and even new drummachines like the Tempest are all mono, usually 6/8/10 voice poliphony, for example 909 is 10 voices, Oberheim DX is 6 voices all mono. If I remember correctly Tempest is 6 voices only. The SP404 is 12 voices at once. 8 seems fine if you use it as intended as a drum machine along other gear handling the rest of the arrangement. Probably pushing you towards more elektron boxes is what is at play as well. Good review overall and a different take coming from general purpose MPCs.
Yes it is what it is, and it is great like that. I can't help but feel wanting extra voices just because of my type of workflow. But I understand that it is not that machine :/
love your stuff !!
Great review...
that electron 8 voice limit is such a deal breaker for me . I wish they had mad this with 16 voice or at least with 12 as there are 12 pads there .
I can't fault the Sequencer electron rules in that department . the Performance & scene really make this more of a performance machine rather than a proper tool to make tunes with IMO . I'm still on the fence about it .
look at the s2400, it should be a good analog alternative to the analog rytm
@@mpchead Yea seen the reviews ... looks Nice but the Sequencing looks SHIT ! Plus it's very very limited in what you can do as well & it's just a sampler. you should deff take advantage of the Drum machine in the RYTM . such a shame it's so limited .
Esa tech aun no es liberada por Donal trump ,😔😔🌳
Have you released any songs from beats you made on this box? If so, name please. I want to listen.
Great overview...Have you tried a Deluge.
the Hessenmob sticker on your turntables in the background says that ur from germany oder were they a thing overseas? ;-)
btw, dope beats and nice videos with a lot of equipment knowledge :-)
I'm from Portugal and skate, that's why I have that sticker.
aye :-) Hessenmob is a skateboard company located near my hometown here in Germany...thats why ive asked
Have you tried the Octatrack? Even less finger drumming, but a top notch sampling machine.
I am curious but I don't think it would be better than the Rytm. I like the simplicity of the rytm
Buen Video Marlow! esa maquina es hermosa! en Argentina es casi imposible comprar una! jajajaja :( Saludos!!!
I'm in a bit of a dilemma picking an Elektron machine to buy.
I'm more of an IDM person, so I like the harsh, gritty sound of the Machinedrum UW, but it's very expensive nowadays. It also has no overbridge or multi-out, which is important to me as I still use software primarily. I can see the Rytm's sequencer & performance workflow is definitely superior as well.
That said, I'm not excited that much by analog drums. I really appreciate them being there for layering and synthesis, but ultimately they don't give me the sound I'm looking for on their own. Luckily, I hear the sampling experience on the Rytm MK2 is very very similar to the Digitakt, which gives me hope as I've seen how powerful that box is. Would you say that's true?
Even if there's no perfect fit, I am still interested in getting an Elektron machine, because life is too short not to make sick beats. I am very interested in trying the Elektron workflow as well. I just don't know what one would be right for me. Do I go for the sound of the drum synthesis on the Machinedrum, or the sequencer & software integration on the Rytm? While trying to anwer this question I also discovered a lot of Rytm reviews don't take into account the recent updates, which add MIDI sequencing among other things, and that hasn't helped me decide.
There is the Digitakt and the Octatrack, but they are samplers and I don't know, I was interested in getting something that synthesises drums.
I wish there was a Machinedrum MK3 with better software integration & an updated sequencer - that would be perfect for me. I *could* go for the Rytm MK2 + the vanilla Machinedrum (non UW), but that's money I don't have. Any thoughts or suggestions anyone?
Nice to see this perspective on this maschine. Since you like this sequencer so much, you tried the Digitakt? I highly suggest it!!
I like that the AR also has pads and analog filters and dedicated outs for the voices. But yes the digitakt would be a good purchase.
@@mpchead For a long time the Roland mv8800 was my main workhorse, but when the overbridge came out, I sold the MV.(which I regret) But streaming 8 tracks sumultaniously to my daw, no notible latency... It makes workflow so fast
Me ha pasado lo mismo pero con la octatrack, la cual si está diseñada para samplear y romper la muestra y adaptarla de manera infinita.
Octatrack is a beast, but a bit complex for my taste.
Aaaand why are you not reviewing Oktatrack instead of Ar then, if the focus was to find the device that allows for flexible sampling? AR sample engine is basic, with some nice features like beat crusher and interconnection with the deep sequencer.
thanks for the video - first vid of yours and subbed, cheers
thanks for tuning in ✌🏼
Is not the MPC + Analog Rytm a bit overkill ? Specially with the MPC new Drumsynth ?
Honestly I prefer Elektron's workflow. I am surprised that you didn't go for an octatrack or digitakt. looking forward to your next demo on the AR. :)
I like to have pads and I also want the analogue filters and compressor, that's why I don't feel so attracted to the other Elektron samplers. But I am sure they are solid machines.
@@mpchead I have quite a collection of analogue filters in my modular, and can relate. That said, the elektron filter DSP is something special and manages to keep pace with my eurorack.
@@robertsyrett1992 that's cool to know. I am curious about the octatrack. Maybe I'll find courage to try one, they seem a bit complex. Do you use your modular filters just for your modular setup or can you run samples through them?
@@mpchead Yeah! I've had lots of configurations that I have experimented with and what works for me is a gain module that brings the level up to modular and then just trim the signal before resampling in the OT. I confess, mostly I am sequencing midi to CV and then sampling the modular, but I treat the modular as miniature rack gear peripheral to the octatrack.
Did you try Octatrak?
Not yet no
Can't believe they didn't use 16 vs 12 pads.
Looks cool, though.
Just would have been more shared channels. Even with 12 pads theres only 8 voices. It probably wouldnt suit everyone but from using this for a few years I've never felt it needed more.
@@BecomingProductions I think I'm traumatized by my mpk249 early edition 12 pad array vs 16 chop normalcy for hip hop
@@irishmossdubwise Yep I remember seeing that on the old MPK and avoided it for the same reason. Yet it doesnt bother me at all about the Rytm. I rarely use it for full tracks though so I use other devices for melody, bass etc. Rytm is pretty much a pure drum machine in my setup so 8 pads is plenty.
irishmossdubwise well an MPC should always have 16 pads
Yup, I'm too used to my drum kits laid out over 16 pads.
Maybe check out the new SP2400.
Can we get a video of you making a beat from scratch on this?
I don't own this machine, my friend lent it to me for a couple of weeks, I don't have it anymore.
@@mpchead appreciate the response and the review of the unit
As a beginner what would suggest I start with for groovebox/drum machine?
What type of music yo want to make? I think the mpc is always a good start. It has everything you need.
@@mpchead Future Beats, Deep House, Boom Bap. Should I go for MPC One or something vintage?
@@lebronsinclair8012 My advice for beginners is one the newer Mpc models.
Who makes those red and green cables?
Man... why all these Analog Rytm videos are just talking and no music?
How would you compare this to the Tempest?
I can't, never used a tempest but I don't think you can import samples to the tempest. But I've seen some comparison videos here on youtube between the two.
Am a slave to limitations and pushing them to the not so norm....jah
Lmao....no music in this video btw
S2400 is going to blow them out
Looks very intriguing, googled it and its discontinued?
They just released a black version of it; the grey one you’d probably have to find used but they are the same
Mister Pickles nice, thanks
better than the SP404MK2?
For me yes I can say that I prefer this to the 404mk2
Shouldn't it be DOPE AR?
Lol
Looks the biz
