Can you change it's time signature? I'm looking for a drum machine that can follow complex times.
I've been watching this video, pretty much every day now. I'm looking forward to getting one of these. A shame they aren't sold ANYWHERE in China, but I'll grab one when I go back to Canada for a visit. Just so you know, your video is what sold me on it.
Thanks again for the video, Bo.
I watch this video just to hear the guy say analogrytm
+Mario Cruz :-D
I love bobeats videos but I have it when he says analogrytm it’s like the Moog muug thing!!
I love it too
Tempted to sample it 😂😂😂
I was almost getting the MK1 as I started my eurorack. This maschine is a beast for sure :) Cheers mate
So, this is final video on topic for me. And now I understand that I should get them definitely both: rytm and octatrack. Great review. Thank you!
Александр that seems to be my issue as well
Looks like a very powerful machine, this is a great review BoBeats, thank you man
Track at 29:30 is SO cool. That grimy little slug “wah” bass sound. Thanks so much for the depth you went into here.
I can so hear Kanye on that beat
Thanks for this excellent comparison video. Always can appreciate hearing your ideas. I have Digitakt, A4 mk2 and Machinedrum-2 UW, but thinking of getting AR-2 someday so I can compare and decide for myself what stays or goes.
I'm late to the party, but I just played a gig in Asheville, and one of my fellow performers did a whole set with 2 of these, I was blown away, Now I think I need to get one! But I'll wait till after the holidays.
Thanks Bo! Excellent video, pretty much answered all my questions! I think the AR MK2 partnered with my A4 MK2 and Digitakt would be an awesome set up...
+Mike Logan that is the setup I am testing out as we speak :-)
Nice overview of the RYTM, thanks for the good work
Hey Bo, thanks a lot for your detailed video. You answered almost all my current questions here. The effects included in the mashine are really worth to safe money for that one. Since long time I'm looking for an alternative to make beats with ableton. Effects there are not the best. But other drummashines are limited on effects as well. A third option I was thinking of was to send the drummashine trough effect pedals. But than I can just put them on the whole thing and not on the single drum and can not easely modulate and save modulation of effects.
Now, my last question is to choose between the Analog Rythm and Mashine drum. Do you have a video about the Mashinedrum as well? Is it a lot limited on effects?
Thanks and best,
Tobi
Hey Bo. Great informative video, thank you. Which drum machine would recommend for making creative beats in conjuction with a DAW (in my case Logic)? I dont need to play it live or make songs entirely within it. Any suggestions would be most appreciated:)
I really like the combination of drumpads and analog synthesis, seems like most analog drum machines dont have that while most devices with drumpads are samplers
Great demo of this beast!!!
Do you get any compensation from electron?
What made this unit worth it for me was the excellent sequencing. The song mode is fantastic once you get used to it. The analog sounds struck me as kind of weak at first, but after digging deeper the big fat hard hitting stuff emerged. It really rewards patiency and exploration.
Thanks for the great video review, Bo!! One question, is that capable of internal resampling?!
+Akira Hoshino yes!! :-) it has a very good way so you can resample either stereo outs or individual outs! :-)
Excelent video!
I have a question...
This machine works with samples or analog synthesizer for drum sounds?
For example the `machines` are samples or synths?
and the another question is:
Is possible to synthesize the sounds?
Because i don´t know if buy this one, jomox alpha base or tanzbar 2 for minimal music.
Hey Bo!
Love the vlog.
In your opinion does the rytm mk2 have a shorter learning curve than octatrack mk2? I know that they are different beasts. I just wanted to know what you think.
Much love!
Leon
Yeah Rytm is much easier to grasp
nice and dark at 9:25. need more of that :)
Hey bo. Great video. Quick question: can the armkii process external audio through the effects or just through the filter/or/compressor? Great great video brother...
+astromass as far as I know the external inputs go thru the compressor only. Nothing else. I could be mistaken tho as I am not great at reading signal flow charts.
Awesome video, as always! The ability to mix samples and synth sounds reminds me of the TR-909. Quick question, though: Can you layer sample sounds and analog sounds on the same pad? Or do you have to layer them in the sequencer as separate sounds?
Same pad
Hey Bo! I was gonna ask if you had your hands on experimenting with the Korg Monologue? I'm looking into getting a bass synth, and wondered what out there within this price range would be the best to choose from.
Monologue or Bass Station 2 is excellent choices. Moog Minitaur is also nice but less feature packed
Hi bo. great review! I would realy like to hear the drums themselves. sound a bit loos.. is it good for techno?
Love your reviews and the sum at the end of this one
It should work awesome for techno! If you search Analog Rytm Techno I am sure there are several audio demos for you :-)
Thanks for the extra in depth review
Do you have to sample blind and then try to work your samples in or can your multitrack in realtime loops and assign those to the pads? Having a 8 output loop machine is pretty sweet, how long can the samples be per pad? Thanks for your demos Bo.
You can only sample 33 sec long sample at one time, then you manually save it, and allocate to a pad. You can have about 60mb of samples loaded at one point spread over the 12 pads
Thx for this video, it helped me
Such a great piece of gear.. No doubt is the best Drum Machine out there.. Great demo Bo, as always!
Great summary. Is the VCO machine already available on your unit?
No new synth yet on my unit :)
So, we're all waiting for an update: it will be available on the MK1 which is another proof how Elektron listens to customer feedback. Do you know if it's going to be available on all tracks or only selected ones? If the latter is true, I just hope these will not be Kick / Snare tracks, as I already need more of those.
Thanks, interesting review!
Thank you for this. How much better would this be for making techno, than the original Analog Rytm? Worth the price difference?
As for the size of sampled files, the max size is 2910600 bytes, or roughly 2.9 megabytes.
Awesome vid Bo! I'm looking to up my game and get some nicer gear for a live project. With this be the unit to use as my mother brain if I were to have say, two or three synths added? I'm currently using my circuit for that, but obviously that has its limitations. Also, would this be the device that would be best for looping breakbeats? All of these through boxes are awesome and all, but I'm having a hard time finding something that can actually handle breakbeats and such. I can only load about 5 8 bars on the circuit LOL. I'm going to need a lot more to be able to perform something for a complete hour.
This is not really golf as a ”brain”, look at Digitakt or Octatrack for that :-
Very nice. I have v1, but this mkII is gorgeous.
Thanks for the excellent review. I know that Elektron made some subtle changes to the synth engine on the A4 mkII. Apart from the new features on the Rytm, do you hear any difference in the sound? Cheers!
I do not hear any difference. But to be totally honest I am not a nitpicky person. I could probably not hear it unless it was quite substantial.
that quick perf knob gettn lot of love
damn bo! I love this track hahaha. Good stuff brother
I was waiting for this :D
Great review thanks. Could you do a video covering Overbridge with RYTM II? Specifically, does it give you more control over sample manipulation?
I can probably do this further down the line yeah :-)
Hooray! Thanks again!
Very good review, thanks!
Fantastic work darlin!
how will it compare with maschine mk3?
thank you your videos are always helpful
does the pad has velocity sensitivity?
Hi Bo,
Do you think the rytm MK2 is also suitable for hip-hop and trap music? Or would you go MPC/Maschine for such genre's?
Good demo !
very clear and concise video with excellent demonstrations. the design appeals to me greatly. i must think on "apple" ;-) the small track around 30:00 ist very nice and you should release it. i would buy it. let alone for this wonderful moody distorted delays. top episode. greetings from germany.
+herbert druschke cheers mate!! Glad you like it!!
glade you make this channel ;-))
Is this easier to get on with than Dave Smith Tempest I am a novice at drum machines so
any advice would be great thankx all...
Awesome video thanks!
I have the tempest and i think is the best drum machine, powerfull and also a synth, but AR is so cool too!
I love your channel! 🤘🏻
I so want a Tempest! Seems amazing! Thanks man!!
Hi BoBeats! Does Analog Rytm MK2 have as many drum sounds as Elektron Machinedrum UW? Do the sounds in Analog Rytm MK2 sound as good as in Machinedrum UW and is it possible to tweak them as in Machinedrum UW?
Gotta ask a silly question... Given they would cost about the same amount, Any thoughts on Rytm mk2... Or Digitakt+Digitone Keys? With live production and tweaking being more of a core focus?
Sounds fantastic buddy :)
It will be great if you could make a Video over the Yomox Alpha Base couse is this a Option too the MK2
Congrats on 100K
Hey buddy quick question. How do I load additional sound banks to this machine? Every time I do it via sysex bank A and B change, and bank A has like 2 sounds... so then I end up having to factory reset the thing... I'm growing pretty tired of this machine and I've owned it for 1 day.... any advice?
@bobeats i'm a bit confused. In light of what you said - why do you have the Digitakt if you have the Rytm and Octatrack? Isn't it overkill? Sure, it's a bit different. But that much that it's worth getting if you already have the Octa and Rytm? What does it give you that you don't already have or can't do with what you already own?
Well, I run a youtube channel about synths :-) so that is the big WHY
BoBeats
I see. So basically what you're saying is that your recommendation is that if i already have the rytm and octatrack, the digitakt would be redundant.
Yes, I think so. At least I would not recommend it as Octa got you covered for midi and sampling and Rytm got you covered for sample playback and analog sounds
Great machine. Are you planning to review the jomox alpha base?
Not any plans as of yet
You mentioned that you can set up the master effect so it doesn't effect all tracks. How would you do that? Parameter lock on and off in the sequencer?
You can change track routings in the global menu. If you want certain tracks to send to main outs and/or FX
i just got this beast and it sound amazing. the only thing is i cant seem to load any sythns into any session. ive tried everything and im at a loss i dont know if its me or my machine isnt loaded with them which dosent seem likely. plz help anyone plz!!!! maybe you bo i know you can help please!!!
The track at the start is my new favorite from you Bo!
Hello Bo so its a new update from Elektron out 1.6 Analoge Rhytem and what is you,re meaning about the new features .Greetings from Germany
yay, an extra long bobeats episode. let me put the kettle on so i can have a sip of the tea!
+Woody Piano Shack ah your heresy is forgiven if you watch it all :-D
no problem at all bo, it's worth it just to hear you say Rytm. :D
and circuitry! :D CÖRKUÖIITY
Tea vs Coffee the eternal producer debate :P
Drink both - make everyone happy - make the economy better ;) Analogue vs. digital, coffee vs. tea, samples vs. real instruments.... why choose when you can have the best of both worlds ;)
Is the music you're playing, at around the 9 minute mark, all coming from the one device? It sounds amazing.
All the music is 100% analog rytm (some samples, some analog sounds)unprocessed!
Oh Jesus... I need one of these, now.
Sadly, after looking around on Chinese website (I live in China), this thing isn't sold ANYWHERE in China. Goodness gracious.
How does distortion work? Does it only work on the master output?
Thanks for the video! The way you say circuitry sounds like "Charcuterie" in french ^^
The MK2 Elektron Rytm has a lot of firmware/hardware issues and that is why I would hold off buying one until Elektron engineering gets these resolved. You are better off either getting the Rytm MK1 right now or something else like Jomox Alpha base, MFB Tanzbar, Vermona, etc. Bo- you should review these other drum synths that would make for a great show!
If I can get my hands on them I will :-) cheers!!
@@BoBeats Yes.. please make a review of Jomox Alpha Base... maybe compared to rytm mk2. Would love to see the pro and contras.
This guy is right. The AR MK2 has plenty of issues. Just read through the Elektronauts forum. Mine had faulty mute pads. Had to send it back. It took several months to fix. I even had to pay for shipping to my retailer. My friends MK2 had a defect, too. He sent it to the retailer, who sent it to Elektron and after they shipped it back to him, it was still not fixed. He had to go through the entire procedure twice. Here is my advice to people who want to buy the AR Mk2: if you can afford buying it, then not using it for several months as it is being fixed by Elektron, and going through the trouble of boxing and unboxing it several times to send it back and forth between you and your retailer - go for it.
Hi Bo! I red on forums that the MKII has bugs and can be a bit unstable. Can you tell if this is true? Because I was about to get the MK1 foe this reason. Thanks!
Yo Bo: ) the beat at around 17:00 absolutely rocks!
+DJ Free cool!! I think some of the demos had a bit of potential.
29:00 is dopeshit too
Hey Bo.. if you change one of the sounds, will it (or can you make it) carry over to every pattern? one thing I hate about digi is if I tweak a sound, I have to copy and paste the sound into every pattern.. it kills my workflow.
The ar/ak/a4 works with Kits. So a new pattern will use the previous patterns kit unless changed
thanks for the video. I have an A4 mk2 and a digitakt. I've been wanting a Rytm for a while, unfortunately the mk2 is out of my budget atm. Do you think I should sell my DT and get an Mk2 or just get a used Rytm mk1 to complement my setup? My only concern is, that im really getting used to the display of the AK mk2 by now, so if i get an old Rytm it would be really tough working on it, huh. Any opinions are more than welcome! thanks
yes the old displays are not fun when you are used to mk2 ones imo. But Digitakt and ARmk2 might have a bit of overlap for you so think hard if you really need the AR as its a big investment
@@BoBeats i definitely want a drum synth, and since i got used to using P-locks, i can hardly imagine getting something else than an AR or MD. Thats why i was thinking of swapping the DT for an AR mk2...but then I will miss the midi tracks controll...oh jeez..
Great video Bo! Rytm Mk2 seems to be the big daddy drum machine out there.
Thanks Jay! :) Yeah since the Tempest got discontinued (or just not developed any more firmware-wise) I feel it it
Wow. Great one mate!
I am looking for a drum mashine with sampling capability, I had started to look at the digitakt, but now elektron pulls out its Rytm MKII, which one to choose, bearing in mind that the second costs twice as much? I understand the differences you mention in your video, but I still do not reach a decision!
+Klumppe Digitakt offers a lot of the workflow so you got that covered. The question is how much the analog synth engine is worth to you!
It seems that this is one of the main questions here! I am impressed that we return to it or that elektron returns us to that question so, but so old. There are many detractors of the analog sound for a drummachine and, also for the samples!
Hi Bo, Great video. Thanks! I watched the whole video so I hope I'm not asking a redundant question. But one of my main uses for either the Rythm or the Digitakt would be to accompany my Sitar playing. I need a drum machine or sampler that can sequence high quality Tabla (drum) samples and Tanpura (drone) samples that I have recorded. I use Ableton live for this at the moment, but bringing my mac and all the attachments is a real pain for Sitar gigs and sort of interferes with the mood for these types of gigs. I am after something less fragile than a laptop and quick/simple to set up.
Of course I use all these things for electronic music and for live playing with guitar (live instruments) based projects as well.
Would you say that for sequencing samples I have made in Ableton, primarily for Indian classical music that the Digitakt would be the better choice?
+david lynch I would say that the Octatrack is the best choice for this. Absolutely the best for live performances with samples! A digitakt would be the second best
I'll throw my thoughts in here. If you have no need for the analog synth engine, I think the Digitakt is closer to what you are looking for. If you need performance macros or song mode that the ARmk2 provides, then it might be worth it to just get the big one... That said and I know you didn't ask about this but if I were doing what you are doing (especially with the Tanpura) I would recommend the Octatrack all the way.
Thanks for the advice guys! All 3 would be the best I suppose.
For the Sitar/Indian Classical stuff, my hands are pretty busy, so I probably want something that favours long sequences. But When I'm playing guitar or doing electronic/synth stuff playability is better. I am thinking of the Digitakt with an MPD232 that I already have for pads/faders. The pads are great on it.
you might also check out the MPC Live. Sample loading and programming is much simpler and more straightforward. I have owned an octatrack, a rytm, and an MPC live and used them all extensively.
Know that Elektron stuff is awesome, but the only Elektrom machine that lets you save the tempo with the pattern is the digitakt. With the Octatrack or the Rytm, you have to manually change the tempo every time you want it to change, or you have to send it a tempo change via an external machine. There is no workaround for this, so if you're playing an instrument at the same time you're using one of these machines, you'd have to have a free hand (and moment to concentrate on the box) to go into the tempo menu and turn the tempo knob.
I'm making a decision between OT and AR for my first hardware. Which one would you recommend for industrial/minimal techno production?
Probably OT. Its just crazy cool!
BoBeats sounds good, is it really hard to use like people said?
Its not hard to use, but it takes time getting used to. Read manual. Watch tutorials. Get a basic understanding of how it works and it will be fine. I think the major problem is people expect it to work like a DAW or traditional sampler. It doesn't. Its just different and very cool :)
I think that a couple of these devices plus some dedication will make you a good match to artists from Mille Plateaux, Minus, Kompakt, you name it... In like a year or two.
Yes bro
Raster Noton , Warp and n5md also
What’s better? Akai mpc x or this device?
Wait how did you pronounce RYTM at 25:47? 😅
Lovely run through though brother, very insightful :)
+Schtang man I switch between all manner of pronounciations :-) swedish correct way, english, swe-english...
Schtang R a c i s . U know witch letter comes next...
Hello!im just looking for an all in one machine to make music as complex as Aphex Twin but there are a lot of machines. Could I hear opinions of what u think about this?of course Richard uses a lot of machines, synths effects even daws, so it’s imposible getting this complexity...Anyway will like to hear suggestions cause I’m lost...Thankssss
One note: since this video was released Elektron updated the rytm mk2 so it is able to sequence external gear. Tracks can be assigned to different midi channels and you can live record with chromatic mode or sequence on the steps!
So I can have my virus ti play through the sequencer of MK2?
@@shieldyourselfmusic8567 Yeah, make sure you have the updated firmware for the mk2. Use a midi cable from the midi out on the MK2 to the midi in on your Virus ti. Select a Track pad on the MK2 to play/sequence, then hold FUNC and press Trig (which will bring up the Quantize settings for that track). In that menu there's a box to check like "send midi notes" that will route that track # to the same midi channel # (so if you use track 11 then it will send all of the notes to midi channel 11). Now sequence steps or go into Chromatic mode to play with that track still selected and it should trigger on your Virus. There are a couple of other settings that could cause a problem, something like: The virus needs to be set to receive midi notes from that channel (so omni mode on the virus would receive from all channels maybe by default, if not you'll need to change the midi channel of the virus to the same track # from the Rytm).
@@DJ-Wix thanks I dont own mk2 yet but just waiting on my refund of polybrute and then im pulling the trigger
thanks, this is what we wanted to see. ; - )
tell me about the song mode. Is it viable to have my octatrack going into this thing? I wanna put it through that compressor
Sure, using the Octa thru this can work nicely.
you had mentioned only the octatrack has timestretching... does the digitakt not do it too? cheers
No Digitakt doesnt have time stretching
thats good to know. thanks!
good video! Rytm is the best Machine I have owned, love it. my only problem is I have the MK1, is it really worth the upgrade? Selling MK1 to get MK2? pretty much for one performance knob...
+PaPy KoG so hard to say... if you need the sampling and/or IO the upgrade can be worth it. Otherwise not.
great review!
did you notice any difference in quality or character of sound from analog voices or samples?
for the price loss of the mk1 to mk2 you could buy a digitakt.
Midi out is supported from OS v1.5 - so closer to Digitakt functionality there now.
Can all of the tracks or sounds in a kit be sample based or is there some type of limit?
Each track can have a sample. So 8 samples playing at once and 12 tracks total
Do you think rytm mk1 will get the update so it can sample too?
+Johnathan C no. The Rytm Mk1 can’t sample. It only has the external inputs that are used to go into the compressor. The mk2 had 2 additional inputs that works for sampling. Different architecture.
Isn't changing the start and end values with loop enabled the same as 'changing the loop point'..? (that you said was missing)..
I don't think that is exactly the same. This is what the Digitakt manual says: "11.3.7 LOOP
Loop Pos sets the position in the sample to where playback will return to after reaching the Length
Position (defined by STRT + LEN) of the sample if PLAY MODE is set to FORWARD LOOP or REVERSE
LOOP. The sample is then looped between the end of LEN and LOOP. (0.00-120.00)"
So sample plays to length point/value, then returns to another value that is not the start value. This is different from Rytm
Does it play/support stereo samples? or also only mono like the digitakt?
Mono
thanks man
"i have small, gentle and soft hands" hahahah
+cooptrol ;-)
any info on when the OS for MKI will be available?
+cooptrol unfortunately no
thanks! great review btw!
Thanks man! :)
you can set loop points....you have start and end right there. maybe you dont see the waveform, but you can hear the change. even reverses the sound when you crossover.
Yeah that is not what I mean. Check the Digitakt manual and compare. You can set a specific point at which the sample will loop back from, it is a third option beside start/end
What I would like is to listen to the drums without any of the synth stuff or effect stuff to see what they sound like., because up to this point I haven't seen a single demo with just the drum sounds, that way I can compare to other drums out there.
When is the Video on the Bass Station II coming?
+Brokoli Jammer hopefully this year :-D
Well, i already bought it, but id still like to see a video on it. Maybe a jam as well. Love your videos
Seems like they improved a lot in the direction of DSI Tempest. Now this is def. better than the Tempest. (Had a tempest)
Hello Bo! Tell me please about a conection Roland Mc707 to Pc. Do I have to use audio interface for it or Roland have it own? Thanks for answering me.
Hey! If I dont misremember I am quite sure you can stream all the channels to PC. But please double check with the manual or Roland :) its hard to remember
@@BoBeats Ok. Thank you some much for answering me.👧🙋 I really hate of dry Roland's manual. Sorry.
it can't sequence external gear?
I wonder how the performance knob works in 5 years from now. But it every sounds like my TR-909? I'll take that into account.
new rytm user here. 23:34 could you just set a scene / parameter lock that sets a custom start/end with loop on? i’ve never used digitakt so it may be different but from what you describe, the workaround on rytm seems possible!
