SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk about managing intrusive thoughts. This podcast is part 6 of my series on the different parts of the mind and brain. Intrusive thinking is can be defined as uncontrollable, unwanted thoughts that we feel unable to resist. This kind of thinking is often a way of coping with an underlying, unresolved issue. It’s not always the most effective or sustainable way to deal with pain or trauma, but it’s a coping mechanism-a type of distraction you use to try to keep the source of your pain bearable, at least in the short term.

    This is amazingly insightful !!
I have a hyper creative brain… not adhd? I choose to frame it differently. The creative brain is more susceptible to intrusive thoughts.,, distractions? Rechanneling the energy can transform the thought into something that could be destructive to constructive!
    Love this dr Leaf.

The title of the video will bring people who have Intrusive thoughts here looking for help. If you Google "Intrusive thoughts" more than likely Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) will come up. This video is potentially very damaging to someone with OCD. Intrusive thoughts for people with OCD commonly include 'themes'
Some examples of these common intrusive thoughts are :
    1. What if I'm a pedophile? the anxiety of this Intrusive thought will be very high with terrifying rumination, sometimes worrying so much that someone might even avoid and will stop wanting to see their own children fearing they're a bad person to have such a thought.
    2. Another common Intrusive thought is What if I harm someone? As in the above example, the anxiety will be extremely high with rumination and people could become house bound throwing normal everyday kitchen knives away and/or avoid people altogether, or repeatedly 'check' that they (usually a loved one) are ok, or if driving and they drive over a bump in the road the Intrusive thought could be What if that was a person and I've killed them? so with this Intrusive thought they will drive back and check that noone was there.
These are just some examples of the common 'themes' of Intrusive OCD thoughts.
It is absolutely imperative to know that ocd "intrusive thoughts" are not your friend as is stated here and importantly that you are not your thoughts.
All research shows that people with OCD never act on their thoughts, they are just irrational thoughts; these intrusive thoughts are not true, they are not real and have no reflection on the person suffering. People with OCD are in fact the opposite of the intrusive thoughts - very caring loving and gentle, this is why they're troubled by them. Whilst I agree that mindfulness can be beneficial, it is important to seek a professionally qualified CBT therapist with Exposure Response Prevention techniques who knows exactly what Intrusive thoughts are for people with OCD. I hope this helps anyone who is suffering from intrusive thoughts that are OCD related, OCD is not "your friend", it is important to distance yourself from the intrusive thoughts because they are not real. You are not your thoughts.

Well said. The advice offered in the video is NOT representative of expert opinion in the field and has the potential to create confusion and even cause harm among sufferers of OCD and PTSD.

Thank you for sharing this information. I think the advise in this video could be very harmful to someone with OCD because OCD causes you to search for meaning in the intrusive thoughts. You are not the OCD. You are not the intrusive thoughts. Experience Response Prevention with an OCD specialist would be a healing approach for someone with OCD.

Hi Caroline! I like your content, but I'm really struggling to find the other parts you are talking about. It should be written in the description of the video, to make it easier to find...

all thought can be said to be intrusive, we have no free will thoughts just are part of the experience of life - being able to seemingly alter a thought depends on a multitude of inputs most of which are outside of awareness or control. Mind then spins us a story about what has changed and makes it feel like its some sort of individual choice - individual, me, self is also a story - we are multitude complexity of collaborating cells - there is no me.

What does it mean if no thoughts came up

Unfortunately, this advice on intrusive thoughts directly contradicts that of OCD experts in every respect. For example, many women who suffer from postpartum OCD/intrusive thoughts suffer from thoughts of harming their baby. These thoughts are NOT giving them information about who they are. They are not messages from the unconscious. They do not represent a desire or intention to harm their child. As OCD experts repeatedly emphasize, analyzing these thoughts and looking for their meaning is the worst possible course of action, because it actually creates an anxiety/OCD loop. it's regrettable that Dr Leaf fails to make clear that many experts in the field would strongly disagree with the approach she is advocating.

Then what should we do instead with those intrusive OCD thoughts that are harmful?
