Do you know this is going to come off crazy but as a teacher, sometimes I play games and even perform tricks with my students. On a few occasions, I’ve been told that I sound more like a game, show host and a teacher. I took that as a compliment, because I try to keep my classes, engaging, and in some ways, I think shows kind of influenced the ways that I teach. They got me thinking even more. What would a magic show look like if it was treated more like a game show? I’ve seriously considered creating a comedy mentalism show. That’s presented as a game show in that vein. Think of an effect like bank night. Calling it something like Win my money where they think they have a chance to win big but the magician ends up winning his own money back could look pretty fun. Think of the old show Win Ben Stein‘s money. Ben himself played against the players, and he usually won! I think a magician, who comes off more like a game show host who is essentially the one playing against the players, and always happens to win could be interesting. Of course if he loses, that would be pretty fun too.

I don't think that's crazy. It sounds like a fun idea! I know that Ken Dyne at one point explained he felt that was his role when doing a show: director of the party

Gonna be honest, I am not much into mentalism. I *will* say that this was such a thoughtful review, even more than usual. Your thoughts and analysis on the special edition vs standard edition was amazing. Very impressed that you gave it that amount of thought and shared that valuable feedback. Wow. Keep it up!

Excellent review and very similar to my experience with his prior releases. Too process heavy (which can be inherently boring).
I think the honest truth is that very few performers can really pull off successfully entertaining Mentalism in this modern adhd world as you so put it.

I like the way that mentalism can more so than magic provide an apparent 'miss' only to turn around and make the actual reveal even more impressive and giving it that 'real' feel to it.

I will have to check this one out, at least the standard edition. Currently I've only read Paul's The Alchemical Tools, but it is arguably my favourite theory book (it's light on tricks but has a few nice ones) that I've read. Thank you for the great review!

I am one of the weird people that is not a big fan of most mentalism. I do like some of it, basically, if it requires a lot of face-making, hand gestures, and acting, I'm out. 😉
It's funny how a lot of so-called mentalism to me is just close-up magic mislabeled. That kind of mentalism is great.
Thanks for the great show as always Jeff! Even if it is not a book that I really like, I still love the show!
I also appreciate Don's Magic and Books and try to buy as much as I can to support him. I can't wait to hear what books he is getting in his new collection.

What's a hand jester? Oh, hand gestures. OK, makes sense now. I was thinking it might be some obscure mentalist sleight I'd never heard of.

    • @EruditeMagic

It's like a mime, but more active. 😉 JK! I believe it's an autocorrect for "gesture," but correct me if I'm wrong, Scott

@@twatmunro oops sorry. Either spellcheck messed it up or I did. It’s Gesture. Sorry. Simply put I can’t act. Mentalism requires acting skills that I will never possess. I’m more of a jokester or storyteller. I made it even worse when I copied and pasted one of my other posts from this post. Lol. There is another court jester out there somewhere. Lol

Before I was a book seller, it drove me crazy when an author would offer the "standard edition" and then also a "special edition". I always asked myself, "Why don't they release it all as one single book, or as two separate items with the "extra" material as a separate purchasable book?"
Then as a book buyer and seller, I thought I would think differently. I don't. No matter how good the "extra" material is, I would beg authors to simply release it as an addendum to the regular volume, or as another titled book altogether.
I think I understand why authors do that (to sell more books, and to make some of them "more collectible"), but it's a weird quirk within the magic book world, and I will learn to live with it.

    The problem with mentalisim ?
    Too much procedure.
Max Maven and Spidey are my favourites. I wish I could see more of Michael Webber.

    • @EruditeMagic
      @EruditeMagic  Рік тому +2

That certainly can be a problem! The issue is less about the procedure, and how to make the procedure interesting, IMO 🤷🏻
