Trekking Wild Zanskar - Padum to Lamayuru, India

- Follow along on the second half of the Zanskar trek from Padum to Lamayuru along the turquoise Zanskar River and by stunning rock formations. The video features some of the eight passes we had to cross, homestays in traditional villages and a glimpse into monastic life of Lingshed and Lamayuru monasteries. Also, witness the end of total isolation as road construction in Zanskar pushes forward and has now reached Sirsir La pass.

Wonderful, you have done an amazing video of the trek Padum - Lamayuru ! Actually it was one of the most famous and hardest trek in Ladakh ! Unfortunately now we already have motorable road , less income for the local people in the village meantime everything get much easier for them because of the road ! Magnificent views from the Parfila pass , Hanumala, Skupala and Singla pass , where you have put the prayer flags , BRAVO ! Hope you are still missing this trip !!! Djullay 🙏🙏🙏Dorjay Pidmoo
Really great video. I did this in the 90s, remember the pieces of old path below hanupatta. Went back with son in 2018 and road went to Cha in lungnak and to kuipa-la above Gongma. Back this year and roads now go to kargiakh and to just above Lingshed! And to yulchun and nierak! I’d forgotten so much and this video brings back the magic of my first trip. Great photography. Thanks so much for making this. Saddest thing for me to see was that old bridge at jinchen. Those were the days. Now there’s concrete everywhere.
Just found this . Beautifully done boyo. I did this trip , with some additions, from Manali to lamayuru as my honeymoon in 1994- yeh , I know!
Such an awe inspiring land and such wonderful people. Had lots of adventures along the way , some soul deep memories. Been to Zanskar and Ladakh a few times but that trip was my favorite . Sadly no go pros or video on SLR then but do have a well loved collection of 700+ slides!
Broke down and sobbed near Phtoksar looking at the shear beauty in early dawn light while listening to Floyd’s Marooned - just fell to bits. A yak shepherd came running over to see if I was ok ! Have a gorgeous A1 picture of him with prayer wheel and beads ( after sharing some chocolate) on my clinic door( GP uk ) so when stressed he lifts me up .

Just reading the book, BUDDHIST HIMALAYAS People, Faith and Country. so i decided to look this place up Indian Kashmir the people of Zanskar and stumbled onto this video clip. thank you it gave me a good/basic insight to the area. Bless you.
It’s amazing to see that foreigners has explored zanskar so many years ago and still many of us are unaware that such place exists in India.
These places are still not well marked in maps.🙏

Lucky you, I wish I could do it agin. I have done the Darsha-Lamayuru trek in september 2001 and it is among the best trek I had ever done. Watching your amazing pictures just remind me how wonderful and remote this place is and Zanskar people were just so friendly. If you have the opportunity one day, do the first part from Darsha to Padum with the side visit to Phuktal.

I agree, the trek was wonderful. Funny that you mentioned the Darcha to Padum trek because we did the whole trek from Darcha to Lamayuru at the same time. Hi! I'm planning to do this same trek in July '18 and I was wondering, having to choose between north and south part, would you recommend one over the other?
It's hard to say, both stretches were beautiful. If I had to choose, I would probably choose the Darcha to Padum stretch because I really liked our visit to the Phuktal Monastery. Having said that, we did this trek in 2008, so I don't know what the experience would be like in 2018.

Hello and greetings from Bulgaria. Is it possible to do the trek in October without a guide? Can you recommend a map to use?
Hi Georgi, if you want to get through the trek without snow, hiking in October is quite late. We started our trek in mid-September and finished in early October (we went all the way from Darcha to Lamayuru). Just a couple of days after we finished, a snow storm moved in and made the 5,000-meter passes impassable. Even mid-September was considered late. If you want to go by yourself, I suggest doing it a little earlier. In terms of a map, I wish I could remember the name of the guidebook we used. We picked it up in Leh and it had very detailed hand-drawn maps and descriptions. Unfortunately, I don't have that book anymore.
This map would be available at tourist center located in leh .
