- Pizza Hut is set to lay off more than 1,200 delivery drivers in Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties in the coming year, ahead of a new state law that boosts the fast-food minimum wage by $4 to $20 per hour.

Sometimes I think the companies wrote these laws. They cut staff and now have an unlimited number of private "contractors" who don't require higher pay, supervision, health insurance and other benefits. Essentially, these soon to be unemployed Pizza Hut drivers jobs have just been outsourced....not to China but to Grub Hub and Door Dash.

Despite what politicians say, you can't force an increase in wages and not expect a business to adjust, usually by layoffs or less hours. Businesses don't have unlimited money resources, even large chains like Pizza Hut.

Drivers can also milk the clock and just park and relax at $20 hr. The old method ( low hourly, plus delivery fee plus tip) incentivized productivity

Haven’t been to Pizza Hut in years ever since i dined in and they served pizza and breadsticks in a box with paper plates and the bill came out to $35 for 2 people.
An order that cost $35 a couple of years ago now costs $65. Somebody has to pay when the state triples the minimum wage; it’s not the companies, as they must maintain a minimum profit margin over their costs, it’s consumers that pay. Politicians do it for votes, and it works, the voters being unable to understand how the laws they pass makes everything cost so much.

We never needed junk food at every corner. I hope these people can find better jobs and pursue better life-styles. When stores shut down as a result of covid many employees received the opportunity to get trained in a career trade if enough places lay off their team and people express to the unemployment office the need. I worked fastfood in highschool & learned that was how you get in the door to improve & strive to be better elsewhere, or become part of the corporation.
People blaming the businesses should be blaming the legislatures who passed the law. I owned a business for 15 years and sometimes you either cut costs or shut your doors. When minimum wages were raised some time back many fast food places replaced counter workers with kiosks.
If you can't pay your workers a living wage you don't deserve to own a business.

When I was in highschool, Pizza Hut and fast food business's were considered part time jobs. Mostly college and highschool students were employed. Now people expect these positions to be a high paying job to live on and don't need to further their education.

That's a lie. Many company's pay above minimum way and still profit billions. In n out pays way above minimum wage and have been for years and they still profit. Everything has too do with greed stock buy backs and keeping the stock holder happy.

I worked for The Hut off and on since the late 80's, when they used to have a call center that would take orders and offer TVs and gifts for suggestive selling, a store with a staff of at least 10 employees with 3-4 making pizzas.
Now, Call center dissappeared, one person makes, cuts, stocks, answers phones, practically one employee runs the store, 1 manager who manipulates the delivery time by cashing the order in early to satisfy the algorithms! Meanwhile the driver, has to hope the customer doesn't think the delivery charge is a tip! From hand made dough to frozen, the taste just isn't the same anymore.
Yeah, we quit Pizza Hut. Their food isn't as good anymore. They charge too much for pizza. So, we are learning how to make it at home. Not paying (nearly) $8 bucks for delivery.

You get what you voted for CA. Your actions have consequences.
See that’s the thing, you can mandate a $20/hr minimum - but that does not address the competitive nature of business. I.E., it can be hard to raise prices to compensate when customers have other options.

I remember starting a good paying manufacturing job. At $.25 more than minimum wage $4.25/hr. And could afford alot more than I can now that I'm making $28/hr.

I used to be paid 10% commission of all I delivered and got to keep the tip. Average weekend in the 1990's was about 300.00 dollars. More companies should look into commission pay and adjust pricing to compensate.

I'm retired and am 55. I get requests all the time to apply for many part-time jobs by former employers and by businesses that I patronize quite often.

Entry level fast food jobs are not CAREERS. EMT's make less than $20/hr LA County and have to go to school, pass the NREMT exam, are exposed to sick and sometimes dangerous people, and are open to medical malpractice lawsuits if they don't do their job correctly. Ridiculous
I'm an emt and we get paid like shit since like forever. It's ridiculous. Even emts can't afford a decent living with that wage. So this 20$ hike is nothing for everyone. They been using Doordash and Ubereats and slowly removing their drivers. It's too much profit for them and the new law just confirmed for them to use third-party drivers for their delivery.
Pizza Hut used to be so good in the 80s & 90s. They've been awful these past 10 years.

How much is rent for a spot like this? I know in Palm Springs for some locations to do business it’s 10k a month and it’s not even near down town where all the people are at. How much to pay for utilities? How many employees do they have? How much is insurance? Plus a bunch of other payments. How long does it take to make 1 pizza and how many do they have to make to break even.
Some businesses will fail and close down while others will survive and raise prices.

Do the math on that. 30 mph average speed. 30 miles in an hour for 7 an hour is $200+ an hour to be an Uber driver for lawn mowers in my 99 s10 I got for $4k 15 years ago and put 50k miles on it mowing with it. Money to be made for people not lazy. I got few e-commerce sites too on side. If someone still working at mcdonalds or delivering pizza at 40 then they really plucked up along the way

It really is a joke having to use your own car to do this type of work nowadays. People see the brand and think they're rich, they have the money. The franchisee has to pay a fee to the parent company for the franchise and they have to pay all of the expenses, including labor and taxes. There's no big pot of money in the company office. These businesses will go through millions of dollars over years before they see a single dime of profit. Ask people if they will pay a big increase for the cost of the product and they'll say sure. But in reality it never happens. The customers will find a cheaper alternative. The government can mandate a 50 dollar an hour wage if they want. The true minimum wage is always zero. Fast food chains are already looking at robots and other technology to replace workers. You get paid according to the value you bring to an employer. The government increasing the cost does not increase the value the worker brings.
