I Wish My Baby Was Born - American Folk Song

- Vocals, arrangement and video by Farya Faraji. This is a song I arranged last year in late February but decided to re-arrange because I wasn’t content with the result. I Wish My Baby Was Born is an American folk song from the region of Appalachia, specifically from the Bluegrass style. Bluegrass is a style closely related to country with roots in English, Scottish and Irish folk, as well as elements lifted from African influence such as the banjo, which is ancestrally descended from African instruments. Bluegrass is characterised by pentatonic melodies--the same pentatonic you'd find in East Asian music, but then the underlying instrumental arrangement uses chord progression and harmony that utilise the entire seven-note palette of most Western music. Bluegrass melodies are often in major pentatonic modes, which have a "happy" sound, but the underlying chord progression may have minor elements, which are "sadder." This creates an extremely effective emotional for me; it makes the lyrical content of this song far more affecting for me--the sadness seems to be underlined by a sense of hope and bitter-sweetness.
I wish, I wish my baby was born
Sittin on her mama's knee
But you, poor girl are dead and gone
And grass is growing over thee.
Oh I'm not no saint, no I never shall be
Til the sweet apple grows on a sour apple tree
Still I hope that the day will come
When you and I will walk as one.
I ain’t no ahead nor never shall be
Til the sweet apple grows on a sour apple tree
Still I hope that the day will come
When you and I will walk as one.
I wish I wish, my love had died,
And sent her soul, to wander free,
That we might meet, where ravens fly,
And let our poor bodies rest in peace

American descendent from Ulster-Scots here. The sons of Ulster brought this music to the Appalachian Mountains
You speak the west texan language?! There is no limit to your linguistic skills! But honestly dude you're truly underrated.
West Texan?
@@Seyweld98 a certain joke flew over your head
@@cornamenpython6760 the song isn’t even from Texas, what’s the joke here?
@@Seyweld98 you do realise there is no such thing as "West Texan language" to begin with?
@@cornamenpython6760 No shit Sherlock I’ve lived in Dallas!
The song has nothing to do with Texas outside of being in the United States. What you said isn’t even a joke, and it makes no sense.
If my English was more skillful, I might have left a poem praising this song here. Very beautiful music.
Thanks alot!
As an Appalachian .. I appreciate you including this .. oft think our music is simply a derivative of a mostly oral history and the challenges of a poor and very rural area .. Well Done !
Thanks Nathan, I’m honoured!
As someone living in the Appalachian part of North Carolina, great job!
I’m honoured, thanks!
made me shed a tear, ouch.
Different rendition then one that was sung to me by my maw-maw. Still good to hear something from my childhood.
Yeah I managed to find at least a dozen different lyrics, it’s interesting
@@faryafaraji and there all as enjoyable as the next. another one would be Down in the Willow Garden, its just as old as I Wish My Baby Was Born with as many renditions. Farya, keep up the good work and I hope to hear more Appalachian Folk. You're making this Appalachian Expat miss home more.
Never thought I’d see you preform an American song. Great job from Tennessee!
I wish we’d produce more country music like this than what’s In Nashville.

@@hasanteke07 Agreed.
I'd enjoy hearing you arrange a version of 'John the Revelator'. Son House did an a cappella + handclaps and foot stomps 70 yrs ago on b-w television that sounds cool in a drop-D tuning alongside. ua-cam.com/video/xcfvq9X21jc/v-deo.htmlsi=tx7FoEzb718GdJSE
Depressing
The american experience
Personally, this is why American folk is my favorite genre
Hardship and struggle is universal. Good times are fleeting. Such art keeps the spirit going...
