The reason they were doing things like this is simple: it's a safe bet. Since comics weren't as profitable as they were before, they were definitely keeping the characters that made them money while not focusing so much on the more obscure ones. And in their minds it's to make things simple for newcomers while keeping the characters they at least heard of.
It feels like they kinda did allow for the lesser known mutants to get the spotlight. One example is Magik who went on to be an even bigger fan favorite and a staple of the Marvel magical community (with Dr. Strange, Scarlet Witch, and others no less) and Armor/Dani Moonstar/Quentin Quire stepping up to be the sort of Big Brother of the team. It also allowed for them to bolster their ranks having Namor join the team. I do see your point though. It would have had bigger impact if one of the staple X-Men lost their powers, though I feel like fans would have been pissed about that
Now I just realised that Telekinesis is the MOST overrated superpower any hero could have in the Marvel Universe. Also, yeah the idea of the mutants coping with their power loss would've been really interesting if they were explored and is really a shame they didn't.

@@playahsan It was an interesting concept. But the novelty has already worn thin. Most of the side X-Books at the moment seem to have forgotten the X-Men don't die on every mission they ever go on.
I hated _Decimation_ so much. No charges have ever been brought against her and yet whenever someone brings it up, the Avengers act indigent since she feels bad about it. Why didn't Quesada just have the High Evolutionary do the deed? He shut off every Mutant's power during an event in the late '90s. He would work perfectly.
I love Scarlet Witch in the Xmen games and the Movies, but her comic run is so stupid because of her power being "Chaos magic" which basically means "anything the writer wants" which just makes her one HUGE plot device, like no mutants. They need to solidify what her powers can do and can't do. Why I like the Xmen Legends game is because her power is probability, not chaos. She can fire psychci bolts and combust people and heal allies. Makes sense because there's "the small chance you can set on fire" or "the chance to heal wounds faster". But there was no power of just "kill everything because chaos" attack. Then in the movies, she has a sort of mind control and telekinsis power set going on thats very powerful, but she isn't just going up people like Thanos and going "You are powerless against me" and he just crumbles to ash. Scarlet Witch's powers NEED limitations and a defined product, because right now she's literally just "I can do what I want because my power said so"

That last sentance. Holy shit, thank you. You actually managed to critique a comic storyline and the problems it brought forward to current stories, by relating it to the poor decisions made in the past during the "good years". And you did it all so succinctly, without just going "durrr wokeshit, durrrr evil sjw's, durrrrrrrrr creatively bankrupt, durrrr why is woke marvel making everything political it was better in my day durrrrr" like so many of the current crop of youtube grifters and their useless parrots repeat over and over for the past 6 years or so making discourse about the good and the bad impossible. You know how rare that is online? You rock bro. At the time, I was someone who agreed with Quesada's "there are too many mutants" edict. Like, when they finally resolved the "Mary Jane is dead/lol no just kidnapped" plot in Spider-Man and they revealed her stalker just so happend to also be a psychic mutant. I remembered rolling my eyes at that. It felt that anytime they needed a new character quickly, nwriters just said they were a mutant and that was it. To hell with any actual character creation or development. This felt like a lingering thing from the 90's height of mutant popularity, where mutants were selling like mad. Originally, I felt that Decimation was the perfect idea. It put the X-Men on edge like never before. Trimmed a lot of the characters to just the core teams and villains. Gave some classic mainstays who had been around too long a reason to retire, while bringing newer characters to the forefront. It felt very Clairmont-ish in it's execution and simplicity. An actual numbered pool of active mutants made sure that Marvel had to be selective as to who stays powered and fans could now keep track of each remaing mutant more easily. I felt like this made mutants more special, as there were now so few of them. Unfortunately it didn't pan out like that in the long run for all the reasons you pointed out. It took Hickman pulling a Hickman before X-men felt like they were back on track.
I feel like you've just submitted the first half of my reasons for why I don't read X-books anymore. that's precisely what I wanted, the proper next generation of X-Men with the originals taking a more stay at home role. if the Teen Titans could do it with Nightwings team to the second Wonder Girl's, then so could the X-Men. The other half of it all, the other reason I'm done had to do with how Hope Summers was used in AvX. I love that character, Messaih Complex, the time she was raised with Cable, Second Coming, these were great stories and made me love that character. now I thought the idea was the Hope would be the first to truly control and keep the Phoenix force based on everything that happened prior to AvX (little hints here and there seemed to suggest that she could). I thought for sure we'd finally have a character who could do it, but instead they turned her into Jean 2.0 and then just forgot about her. garbage. Hope Summers, leader of the new X-Men and Phoenix, the team consisting of the New Mutants and all the sub teams from Academy X, the Lights, X-23 taking over as Wolverine and Kid Apocalypse becoming Genesis, I mean why not? that would've been awesome. ugh, all of my hate.
I see AvX as an allegory for Marvel and Fox's X-Men film rights conflict, with Hope as said rights. Certainly explains why the X-Men are the explicit bad guys.
There were too many mutants. I think they messed it up by not concentrating on the d-powered mutants a little more that was so interesting to me. The fallout should have lasted longer and been more impactful
I remember I was reading Excalibur at the time, where both Professor X and Magneto were on the ruined Genosoa, sorry for the spelling. I really hated when that comic was just canceled for the event.
Particularly being a Jubilee fan she's snubbed by the movies for 20 god damed years and the comics snub her too it drives me crazy i'm praying the MCU gives her a break and has her on the team
Wasted Potential Messiah. Messiah storyline was cool and I liked it but after that lame AvX story her downfall started, I don't know what happened her during that weird Cable and future story, stopped reading it. Is she still alive?
Hope is actually a pivotal character for the nation of Krakoa now. She hasn't really featured in a book, but alongside some of the new Mutants from Bendis' UXM run, she is a pretty big deal again.
Hope is still alive and has joined the X-men on Krakoa to be a key member in their resurrection initiative of other mutants. Despite being a member of the Summers Family, she is rarely seen with them and hasn’t interacted with a younger version of Cable which is weird considering the fact that he raised her during Messiah Complex.
Can you do a wasted potential on Wally West, either his rebirth run or when Geoff Johns made his identity secret again. Both had massive potential but were sadly wasted in both minor and major ways.
Nice to see another fan of the young x men. This and Avengers Academy were two of my favorites growing up, so its a shame that so few of the characters from either series have been able to last.
@0:26 Fuck yeah, fuck recent retcons! I for one refuse to recognize it, as it was blatantly, and SHAMELESSLY done because of the movies. Not only that, but it also creates a bunch of plot holes that we're all just supposed to ignore. For examples, if the Maximoffs were never mutants in the first place, then why would they be targeted by sentinels? Guilt by association, or something?
I kinda liked decimation for creating my personal fave Mutant era the Academy X kids, Krakoa is cool but it just gives the focus back to the main mutants who always get the focus and the majority of academy X characters are reduced to cameos or bit players with massively different personalitys (they massacred my boy anole).
Jean Grey in the X-Men is the most underutilized character Marvel gave the power to Jean Grey power of the Phoenix Force and they basically wasted her potential several times having no control of it and her constantly getting killed and being controlled by Mastermind and her destroying the entire universe going to do a wasted potential on X-Men decimation I think you should do the wasted potential of the Marvel franchise as well
meh didn't like nothing to do with house of M or decimation and not a fan of the scarlet bitch either......would take hickman anyday feels like xmen is moving in a more postive direction after the played out extinction stuff done better in earlier xmen stories anyway.
meh disagree the depowering was a terrible idea the x books suffered because of it if anything hickman and co wanted to get away from from that era which dragged on way to long.
About the current run by Hickman, I think that, since one the concepts established in the story is that this is all a alternative timeline and that the x-men are once again trying to avoid a dark future, it's very possible that all these events will lead up to the fall of Krakoa, that is gonna be caused by the x-men actions. In the end, the book will reveal a new timeline in which the x-men didn't made Krakoa into a mutant nation and are now finding better solutions to help the mutants.
This is why I stick to Japanese manga stories. Let's face it. Marvel and DC have nothing on One Piece, Berserk, or Full Metal Alchemist (manga and Brotherhood adaption).
4thSnake, have you ever taught about a Generation X: Wasted Potential? I always felt like a lot of the characters were wasted. Emma Frost's regret over her past as a HellFire Club member, Chamber & Synch's Omega power potential, Mondo, Skin potential of being very powerful despite his mutations, Penance, Husk's dream of being a great X-man, Jubilee's lack of growth, etc.
This might seem like a normie question, but since the X-men are the subject I wanted to ask you how do you feel about the actually good X-men (My Hero Academia)? Seeing as how some quirks are very interesting in either application or drawback. Such as how a simple power like intangability is made to be a bad ability to have due to the drawbacks but with creativity and determination can be made into a pretty impressive power. And no I don't use Miro because I'm a Mirotard, I actually hate him, his is just the first that comes to mind when considering a bad quirk made good through creativity.

Certainly explains why the X-Men are the explicit bad guys.
rachel summers truly controlled the phoenix long before hope summers was thought of......
This vid needs more love
there's something about the image of joe quesada wearing a mickey mouse t-shirt that makes my blood boil
I mean he also just has a punchable face to boot, also.
There were too many mutants. I think they messed it up by not concentrating on the d-powered mutants a little more that was so interesting to me. The fallout should have lasted longer and been more impactful
Whats happening to the X-men right now is the most interested I've been in them in a long time.
I remember I was reading Excalibur at the time, where both Professor X and Magneto were on the ruined Genosoa, sorry for the spelling.
I really hated when that comic was just canceled for the event.
Wow.
And I thought NRS mistreat less popular MK characters...
I feel sorry for all X-Men fans.
NRS still does, just that Marvel is even worse
I reread this today and was totally thinking exactly what this is titled yay...
3:23 Thanks John Hickman
Quesada is one of the worst things that happend to Marvel
I think at the time they did the depowering they had no intention on repowering them.
How did I miss this video for a whole 18 hours.
Can you do a wasted potential on Wally West, either his rebirth run or when Geoff Johns made his identity secret again. Both had massive potential but were sadly wasted in both minor and major ways.
Dilip Bhalla yeah especially Hunter Zolomon
DC really screwed up Wally West. I think his only redeeming factor was going to the alternate earth and fighting the Avengers/Xmen/FF (DC's pastiches)
Nice to see another fan of the young x men. This and Avengers Academy were two of my favorites growing up, so its a shame that so few of the characters from either series have been able to last.
Joe quesada tenure at marvel was really terrible
@0:26
Fuck yeah, fuck recent retcons!
It was established that the Decimation left exactly 198 mutants powered worldwide.
Nice video!
meh disagree the depowering was a terrible idea the x books suffered because of it if anything hickman and co wanted to get away from from that era which dragged on way to long.
Fucking make another new already. Its the perfect moment for one
How about the wasted potential of Spider-Man
Brilliant idea
Marvel was never good.

If you think this was a waste of potential, what about the subsequent 10 years?
For the xmen....it all went to shit when House of M happened but for Cyclops.......Age of Apocolypse
Whedon's Astonishing X-Men is still probably the best written Cyclops since Claremont, though.
Wow smh still love the video tho as always
Please do more comic videos!

Any more marvel Wasted Plotentials you have in mind cuz this was pretty badass
Possibly.
Solid Snake Plissken how about Old man Wade and Old man Killmonger?
SR Striker eh I see Wade more in that role due to having a daughter not sure about Killmonger
Solid Snake Plissken well if you seen Old man Hawkeye, Old man Quill, Dead man Logan and the avengers of the wasteland.
What did you think of Marvel Axis, Snake?
Not read.
I've definitely considered discussing Jono's post-GX potential.
The4thSnake If you’re running out of materials to shill, Gen X is a treasure trove of wasted potential in my opinion.
Got bored during season 3.
4:27 X-Box? Don’t you mean X-Men?
X-books.
The4thSnake My apologizes. Couldn’t understand you at that brief moment with your accent.
Have you always called this series wasted plotential? I thought it was just wasted potential, until about a couple months ago lol.
Always.
@@The4thSnake lmao. Fuck, I feel dumb now.
It's my fault, really. I spoke too quickly early on and the L was often lost.
@@The4thSnake nah, it's just a case of me using half my attention during some UA-cam vids.
I have had too much free time lately lol.
The4thSnake you remember Mr Sinister in the X-Men movies that never happened especially the Essex Corp?
