Oddly enough, for me as a huge, lifelong Metallica fan, I loved hearing such a long interview about everything except Metallica. James is such an interesting guy and an icon. So for me it was unbelievably interesting just to hear about life. I'd like to think I know everything about Metallica, and it was fun to just hear about James as a person. But, you're right, they need to do another cool interview like this.
James is one of the most solid, humble, fucking badass dudes there ever was. There's also an old video of someone researching and recording in a lab setting what happens when he screams. His voicebox and lungs produce so much force and vapor that he expels a sonic vapor pressurewave when he initiates the scream. And they recorded it.
Matthew Speicher - learned some factoids about *Apis mellifera* i never would've known without Powerful J. Hetfield; bananas tick 'em off, for instance. . . ....who knew? Things Giligan never taught us!
I've been following Metallica since I was 13 and this is the greatest interview with James I've ever seen. Joe Rogan deserves his own late night show. Way better than most of the corporate shills out there now.
Im amazed his vocal chords are in tact. Just think of singing "Exit light Enter night Take my hand We're off to never-never land" for 100's of live shows. I would have laryngitis all the time.
no doubt ! and the way he really, TRULY appreciates the stuff that they talk about. The bees thing was incredible. The guy was really mesmerized. That's why it is such a great podcast.
That was a killer interview. Joe Rogan is fuckin brilliant. I've never seen someone that could have such a cool, natural conversation with a huge star like he can. I'm sure James appreciated it as well.
unun septium I would like to respectfully disagree. the numbers can't be refuted and Metallica are one the biggest bands, period. but Phil Anselmo, enough said!!
Shane Raines If telling facts about someone induces violence, then that someone is a piece of shit. It sounds like something Phil would do. I loved Pantera until I saw the racism.
unun septium Phil anselmo in my opinion is the best front man in metal period he could make a concert lose there fucking minds but I do agree also with James
Have no idea why this guy has received so much hate from certain people over the years. Absolutely love him! Saw Metallica at Slane Castle just a few days ago and for such a massive show in front of 75,000 people it felt so intimate. Incredible band and hope they go on for as long as possible.
With great fame comes great amount of haters. But in this case even the haters still respect James at some level. Some don't, of course, but they are a special type of people who live their lives being brainless cunts.
This dude is a great example of being an extremely rich person but not because of the money. I really strive to have the attitude that he does. He's one of (if not the most) the most humble and kind musician I've ever seen.
About 10 sum odd years ago my pops owned a bar and godsmack rolled through town and played at a civic center here. One of my best friends mom lived in Massachusetts and lived next door to sully from godsmack, and grew up with him. Well when they came to town she ended up getting ahold of them. They had a couple off days after that show and they came to our bar for a couple hours to drink and eat. Gotta say Sully was awesome and I was young like 12-13 he told me a couple of cool stories and was really down to earth. That bar was sick we also had Charlie Moore the mad fisherman come and do the same thing. I was older for that one and he was mad funny.
When I was 12, I got my first Metallica CD, I had talked to a cousin who is about 8yrs older than me, and he was a big Metallica fan. I asked him what album I should get since I was just getting to know the band. He recommended the black album, he said that it was a good start for someone who is beginning to listen to Metallica. To this day I still believe that he was right in giving me that advice, it was the logical option since it was a very digestible album, however I got “...And justice for all”... I remember coming home, and playing that cd, it was just exactly as James described here, laying on the floor just listening to it, and from time to time looking at the booklet, reading the lyrics (English is not my first language)... It was simply amazing, I was with my brother and we just loved the whole damn thing from beginning to end. Priceless!
DoorDevil You mean Dave Mustaine? He and Metallica are on good terms for quite some time now. And Dave's not a dumbass for having felt that way for quite some time in the past after getting kicked out of Metallica. It's just the way he felt about that happening and he expressed it like any normal human being does. You can't just stop caring about what you love doing the most instantly, can you?
Joe has that something that makes him seem really approachable, not to mention he's very popular and I can't think of any reason to hate him. He gets the best out of people in his interviews.

This guy and the music his band made, literally helped me survive my youth. I don't know if I met him, that I wouldn't be a big crying mess, not just for the amount of gratitude I have as a musician, but also all of the emotion tied to their songs. I think you'd need a squeegee to mop me up. Thank you James and Metallica for everything.
he admitted somewhere, that back in the day when Metallica became big that he did not manage the fame too well, but so was the case with all members of his band. Now he came into age, when people usually get sober, unless there is something wrong with them..
Some former Metallica bandmates (Jason Newsted especially) would beg to differ, apparently James and Lars hogg complete creative control when mixing the albums. But he seems like a nice dude otherwise yeah...
It's always been that way, Each member is open to have their ideas and inputs put its always been down to lars and james to decide if its up to a Metallica standard. I wouldn't really say that it speak about who they are outside of the band as regular people
Best thing that ever happened to me was my TV breaking in a move. After some time I noticed like I was awakening from a coma or something, no bullshit. Sadly, we only learn when we get forced into situations. I hope we will reach the point of mocking the fact people used to have a whole room in their homes just to housing of this little plastic box device. Is that for real?
Joe is a good interviewer in the sense that he tries not to poison the conversation with his own ideals and he always gets great stories out of folks from all walks of life.
This is a really great interview. Joe Rogan really brings out James in this interview. I appreciate joe rogan a ton more because of this, definitely down to earth kind of guy and knows how to approach an artist. Will definitely be checking out more of his videos.
3:45 Music does do something, Just saw them live with my 10yo daughter who loved them since she was 2 from hearing me play Kill em All and Master of Puppets. I cried as a 42yo man hearing them play "The Day That Never Comes" and my daughter absolutely lost it and started screaming non stop when they played songs she knew. Experiencing it with 70k other people just losing there minds was a huge moment for both of us. Metal fans are the best people too. I got so many fist bumps from other old guys cause they loved how much my daughter was into it.

Yea honestly he wouldn't be talking about bees or as such during those ALCOHOLICA days. Another thing too is Rogan don't invite guests, he just interviews people who are interested in coming to his show.
aisacirema he’s a recovering alcoholic so its assumed he relapsed by starting to hit the bottle again. He’s also been dealing with a bad back so painkillers are also a possibility
James Hetfield is an amazing guy. He helped me through a very dark moment in my life with his music. The early Metallica albums are so important to me. He is a very intelligent and thoughtful dude and it wasn't only his riffs and lyrics that helped me but also watching these interviews and stuff. Cool guy. Thank you James and thanks Joe for having so many awesome guests.
"I tell ya, if I could exercise all of those demons, I would have, but it's something that you embrace. It's a part of me - and I get to celebrate it in my music." Dude's poetic just talking in normal conversation. It's like his mind just produces song verses unconsciously

James Hetfield seems like such a laid back dude. Was super inspirational to hear how he overcame his addictions and fixed his family situation, I bet he's a great dad.

There is something cool about Joe Rogan when he can smoke weed with Elon Mask and talk about bees with James Hetfield.

I get people what Metallica stories but I think it’s good James gets to talk about his life a little and his passions outside of Metallica
James is the best front man that metal has ever seen.
unun septium I would like to respectfully disagree. the numbers can't be refuted and Metallica are one the biggest bands, period. but Phil Anselmo, enough said!!
Anselmo, Dickinson, Halford, Araya, Hetfield, Lemmy, they're all great in their own ways.
Shane Raines If telling facts about someone induces violence, then that someone is a piece of shit. It sounds like something Phil would do. I loved Pantera until I saw the racism.
unun septium I Can certainly appreciate that.
unun septium Phil anselmo in my opinion is the best front man in metal period he could make a concert lose there fucking minds but I do agree also with James
Have no idea why this guy has received so much hate from certain people over the years.
Absolutely love him! Saw Metallica at Slane Castle just a few days ago and for such a massive show in front of 75,000 people it felt so intimate.

They were in southern new Mexico, a few people died

Priceless!

It's just the way he felt about that happening and he expressed it like any normal human being does.

I didn't know James Hetfield was such a humble and down to earth type of person.
he admitted somewhere, that back in the day when Metallica became big that he did not manage the fame too well, but so was the case with all members of his band. Now he came into age, when people usually get sober, unless there is something wrong with them..
Jovan Nguyen All you need to do to know who he is would be to listen to their lyrics.
well look, this is how he presents himself on public media. I love James and Metallica but he may not be so humble always.
