I'll be playing Euthia at Geekway to the West in a few weeks. I absolutely cannot wait to try it, since Mage Knight is one of my favorites and this reminds me of Heroes of Might and Magic III as well :)
I sold MK because we didn't quite enjoy it. I've backed Euthia and loved it! The art, quests, combat and characters in Euthia are much more appealing and interesting to me. Also, because I never play solo, Euthia worked perfectly fine here.
I just received my copy and we had a blast with it, you were 100% correct ... once you learn the rules the game is extremely intuitive, unlike the Mage Knight. With Mage Knight I have to re-learn the rules each time we play and for that reason alone we stopped playing it ... In Euthia I agree with you guys that exploration is the best part of the game and combat the worst ... I don't think combat is bad, the problem is it takes too long and if you play with 4 players, sometimes it feels the 4th player may take a nap ... In my opinion, Euthia is a Fantastic game way better than Mage Knight but suffers from pacing issues ... yet we still absulutly loved it ... We discovered you can fix the pace of the game by having a house rule that each player at the start of the turn may only choose 2 action tokens instead of 3, so even if you save your token you will never have more then 3 actions in your turn ... this will force you to strategize in advance and plan your next turn more carefully but most importantly it will speed up the game pace immensely ... this will also force you to utilise other items that gives you move, mine or trade actions you would not normally use and not find interesting...
Mage Knight is such a rewarding experience. I learned the game through playing a Solo Conquest (not the tutorial scenario), and it took me 12 hours (a few hours to get set up and learn the rules, an hour for a nap before starting, and 8 hours to play) because of all the fiddling with the rule book (and googling) I had to do to clarify parts. Destroyed 1 of the 2 cities, but couldn't beat it. It was so much fun though. :)
This game is so freaking good. Best game of 2021 for me. Can't wait for the expansion! I've played it 20 times already, even with the long game length. I agree on player count though. I wouldn't play with more than 3.
I played Euthia solo for 50 hours, and I wish to point out that in solo or coop mode, combat is not tedious. The AI moves are predefined, and the hero's moves (except for deciding when to use a Gaar) usually require only quick thought. Combat usually lasts 2 to 5 quick rounds. Coop also provides the FEATURE of not having to try to mess up the friends you are playing with.-toby

Many thanks for doing the review! Your review confirmed a lot of my own research into the game and locked it in as a pass for me. From my experience as a solo player, competitive games usually don't make for great solo games.
For what it’s worth, the solo deck that comes with the game makes it a really good solo game and it simulates well what a player would do to hinder you in combat, without being too complicated to manage!

The bottom 30% of the screen says a lot about this game. It's clearly going to take time to get ready and pack up afterwards. It might even be the kind of game that needs to sit out between sessions. Maybe I am just a Mage Knight fanboy, but it feels like everyone doing these Euthia Reviews right when the reprint campaign starts, are being told to compare it to such a great game as Mage Knight, and they are just popping up now because everyone is out here getting paid to say it. I really don't get the Mage Knight compare, ya both games use tiles and explore, but what makes Mage Knight such a beloved game by those who play it, is how the combat works and how your character grows from their starting 16 card weak deck, to a complete monster by the end. Watching this game played, and just how the first couple of turns go, it is very stale it seems, roll some dice, get a few things rinse repeat. Compare that with the first turns of Mage Knight, where you walk up to a tower or keep and you have to look at your 5 cards and figure out how in the hell can you take down the enemy, and then the absolute growth that one enemy gives you by allowing you to choose 1 card and talent, it is not even close to what Euthia does. I have seen Euthia turns were you just miss the monster 3 times in a row, take some damage, then the dice go in your favor and you move on, where is the excitement in that? Getting a wound in Mage Knight can absolutely debilitate a turn, and losing a turn HURTS in Mage Knight, where it is just meh, expected in Euthia, no consequence.
I mean if I'm getting paid to say it, I'm doing a crappy job, because I'm saying I'd rather play Mage Knight. It could be that everyone is being paid to say it...or maybe, just maybe....the games are actually fairly comparable.
This kinda looks like fantasy Xia. Looks fun, but have to pass (basically passing on any large RPG type game until CTG's Elder Scrolls...). I understand the "competitor to Mage Knight" but I don't think it really hits the same beats that I love in Mage Knight. The tight hand management, deterministic combat puzzle, the minimal upgrades you get through the game giving huge boosts in power, and a variety of other things. This looks fun, but not the same kind of experience, really, at all.
@@BoardGameCo Yes, and I'm asking what does accessible mean in this context? Because nothing about the game's description sounds accessible. John! What's up :) Long time no chat. I think what we meant, but maybe didn't articulate as clearly as possible, was that big games like this (even for hobbyist gamers, not non-gamers) are a bear to table and so when you can find a big-box experience like this and it's easier to table than its contemporaries in the genre, it seems accessible by comparison.
But no, I would not argue at all that this is an "accessible" game in the way someone might say games like Marvel United, One Night: Ultimate Werewolf, Splendor, etc.
Reviewed just 4 days ago, ouch...
Yep....
@@BoardGameCo Been wondering if you guys would be doing a reaction video of some kind... the crowdfunding situation is really rocky right now. Feels like the whole thing is about to collapse.
You guys just saved me $400
Happy to help :)
@@BoardGameCo Better then mageknight?
The art style isn’t really for me…unfortunately
I always enjoyed it, a little over the top fantasy, but still good
I love fantasy. The art just seems a tad rigid, not sure if that makes sense hahaha
I would like this for the solo but find it way overpriced. As many other games nowadays, too pricey because of (useless) miniatures..
I thought Euthia was canceled because it didn't get 6000 backers even though it funded over 500% in dollars. Or is this a different edition of the game?
It wasn't canceled at the time when this video was made
@@edwardleronculbreath732 yeah, youtube notifications failed my space-time continuum on this one. :) It sucks to put in all that work, for both the reviewers and the producers of the game, to have it canceled. It seemed to get good praise by many.
Nice conversation. You don't mention that Mage Knight art direction is so much more original and beautiful than this one.
Fair :)
Yup! Which is weird when you realized the game is more than 10 years old! :D
Thank you for bringing up this point. MK is much more original in the art department-while it employs some, it doesn’t employ all the tired fantasy tropes like alot of games out there. Euthia does not look original. Aren’t we a little tired of LOTR/DND conception of what fantasy has to be and look like? Wizards with pointy hats and staffs, the effete Elvish, and so forth, come on people we deserve better
@@dreamweapons Yup, which is why Gloomhaven characters are so much fun. Too bad the story isn't very strong :(
And then I stumbled upon this game, Dawnshade: The Watchers Prophecy. At first I was like, "Ha.. cool," and 5 minutes later, "Nevermind, I prefer my generic fantasy characters lol."
