  • During the summer of 1986, my good friend Alan travelled around the UK, armed with a hefty VHS camera, recording the railway scene. I'm delighted to be able to bring you the results. Part 41 sees Alan concluding his visit to Devon with a series of shots around Dawlish Warren, Cockwood Harbour, Dawlish and Newton Abbot. During this period, Dawlish Warren was still controlled by a fine array of lower quadrant semaphore signals which can be seen in operation. At one point, we can even hear the bell codes ringing out in the nearby signal box! Alan filmed a fine procession of trains at Dawlish Warren station, including Class 142 Skipper unit, 45106 westbound on Mk1s, 50010 Monarch on AC Mk2s, 50050 Fearless on an up parcels working and a pair of class 31/4s on a rake of WCML Mk3s forming 1M65, the 1625 SO Paignton to Liverpool Lime Street. A class 33 passes hauling a pair of Railfreight Class 31s and Scotrail liveried 47461 Charles Rennie Mackintosh heads west. Alan then moves to Cockwood Harbour for a couple of shots of IC125 HSTs before returning briefly to Dawlish for a wonderful shot of 50047 Swiftsure pulling away with a down working. Alan then travels to Newton Abbot for his penultimate shots in the West Country. In rather unpleasant conditions, 50040 Leviathon heads an Up working before 50047 arrives with a breakdown train. The crane is required to re-rail a pair of Railfreight Class 31s that have come to grief just west of the station! Before making his way back North, Alan films a couple of shots at Exeter St David’s Station. We see variety of locos on shed before 50042 Triumph arrives with a train heading for the west. I'd love to hear your thoughts about this video. Please leave comments below. Thank you.

I am now 84 and lived in the area during and after WW2. When my Father came home from Army service in 1945, I was 10 years old and he was employed on the GWR as a plate layer. Following the war the Admiralty raised concerns at Govt level about the possibility of storm damage to the main line at Dawlish cutting off its main fleet base at Plymouth from re supply of ammunition / fuel and Stores etc. As a consequence in 1946 and 1947 my Father and other Staff were employed, in gangs of 12 men, every weekend for 2 years in bringing the Teign Valley line - from Newton Abbot to Exeter St Thomas, via Lustleigh and Trusham up to main line standards ! With the expectation of heavy ammunition trains the existing line - mostly single track with passing loops at Stations - was deemed to not be up to those specifications ! So every under bridge and drainage culvert and embankment was strengthened to be able to cope with extra weight plus passing loops were lengthened. The Teign Valley line was closed to traffic at the time of Beeching cuts but after then it was occasionally used for the Royal Train to be stabled at night when on tours of the West Country, until the track was finally lifted. Had it been kept ready on a care and maintenance basis - as many military bases were, the West Country could have had continuous traffic during the recent period of closure. I remember my Father and his mates cycling home after a gruelling days work with pick and shovel absolutely worn out and this went on for 2 years. It is a prime example of the folly of Government short sightedness when Beeching was brought in ! PGH

I couldn't agree more Patrick. It seems to have been a ridiculous oversight not to realise that having only a single link to the South West was always going to lead to problems. Thanks for your great comments and really pleased you're enjoying the collection.

Seeing 47461 must've surprised Alan, so far south. She was in fact, the first 47 to carry Intercity livery, beating 47487 by a few days. But, she became the unique 47/4, in carrying blue stripe Scotrail livery. And, she's on my layout!

Thanks for the great comment CS. I remember travelling behind 47461 in Scotrail livery between Edinburgh and Carstairs. I didn’t realise that it was the only 47/4 to receive that livery though. Thanks for the information and glad you’re still enjoying the collection.

From what I remember, the pair of 31s with the mark 3s was a regular summer Saturday service from Manchester to Newquay, the pacers was eventually replaced because locals was complaining about flange squeal on branch lines. Nice to see the ScotRail duff out of its haunt

Bit of a classic train configuration there with those Class 31s - I thought that I was imagining it at first! :-)

Oooh! 1986. I was on holiday in Exmouth and was amazed at these new trains, 0:30 the Skippers! 33 years later they are still with us! I have a different opinion of them these days!!!! Great to see the reminder though. Thanks Alan and Karl for uploading.
I love the Cockwood Harbour HSTs and the Dawlish 50s. I can even feel the summer heat from these clips!
I would loved to have heard that Valenta HST leaving Exeter at the end :-( .

Absolutely Karl,..that brilliant Valenta scream! Strange to think now that, at the time, I’d always choose a ride behind a 50, but now I’d love the chance to hang out of a window and here an original HST in full cry. Really glad you’re enjoying the collection.

I don’t know where you are getting these videos from but they are like time capsules. Doesn’t seem that long ago to me but it was much closer to the steam age than it is to present day! Wonderful!

Really loving these videos - absolute gems. Peaks were becoming quite rare that far down west in 86, however they’d sneak down to Paignton on a summer Saturday. The crompton flying through with the railfreight 31s (the ones that had derailed later in the video?) wouldn’t have been an everyday occurrence would it?. Another real trip down memory lane. Thank you.

The shots of 45106 should remind us, that 45106 was the last 45 to work in BR ownership, being painted into a green livery by Tinsley depot. It suffered a fire in February 1989, whilst waiting to take up its evening peak working, from St Pancras to Derby. The loco was dumped at Cricklewood, and eventually scrapped. A plan to use 45128 as a replacement also fell by the wayside, after the main generator failed.
The 31/4s working is interesting, as it has two buffet cars! Must've been a lot of demand for the BR sandwich!

Thanks for the gen CS. I didn’t realise that was how 106 met its demise. I had actually been fortunate enough to ride behind it a few weeks earlier, from Chesterfield to Kettering and back on a Sunday Sheffield to St Pancras turn. That was my last peak mainline haulage.

I was on the Newcastle service with 47461 on the front - rare for that loco to come down this way.

Fabulous 43111. It always amazes me when I hear from people who were either on one of the trains Alan filmed or were at the same location at he same time. Really glad you’re enjoying the collection.

Now, if you were going to Exeter, which to choose? A Pacer or a 50 on Mk 2 stock? Now which to choose ? Excellent shots of the 50s, and the Pacers, bouncing off into the mist.

      @kartwheelkarl  3 роки тому

Lovely video. To those who want to bring back BR - at 00:33 that’s the BR travel experience most of us now remember - a line of people trudging onto an overcrowded 2-car Pacer, cheap and not so cheerful.

    • @kartwheelkarl

Unfortunately LimyFox, that was a sign of things to come wasn't it? Eight coache loco hauled trains replaced by two car second gen DMUs! Really glad you're enjoying the collection.
