I Bought a Totaled BMW E12 to Make Mine Better | Also Is my Drivetrain Actually a Euro M90?

- Today we have some E12 action! First, I purchased a completely wrecked 81 528i 5 speed to donate some desirable parts to my e12 so we check out that car and see what a bad rear end collision will do to an E12. And secondly we head over to my "Euro M90" E12 I got on BAT a few months ago to investigate if this car truly has a Euro M90 engine powering it. Time for some 1980s BMW engine investigations!
Throw a S38/B38 on the red E12, put 280 shrick cams, S54 6 speed, incread the size of it's butterfly's from 36 to 40mm , use double valve spring, drop 10-60 liqui in it. Warm up before you go, than let the engine to play the music you been after your entire life. I have been there, and I tell you, that's where your headed. But you still don't know it.
Dude that sounds like the ultimate drivetrain, and the ultimate $$$. We will get there!
That blue E12 is fixable, but finding the body parts would be a massive challenge (at least I think that it's pretty hard to find anything). It is possible to cut all the damaged parts out - strut tower, trunk panels, quarter underpanel (structural one), quarter panel itself.
Anything is fixable i agree, but the frame, suspension and body damage would cost 10s of thousands to repair, not to mention finding the parts too, Just not worth it
Would cost 100,000 at least - not worth that !
I have taken apart 2 m90's so far, one of each flavor. Your forum research is not thorough enough if you have read that piano tops are m90 parts. Piano tops are 10:1 euro/dirty E28 M30b34's. The US 633CSi (e12 flavor) would have come with a similar block and 4 speed trans. I am wondering if that is what you have in your car with an updated/refreshed head. But I wouldn't rule out that it isn't an M90 just yet until you look at the distributor number or AFM/ECU numbering. An '81 M90 would have had the block without the raised waterjacket but it also would have come with the later (motronic) intake manifold. The euro m90 pistons are flat topped for 9.3:1 compression with the matching M90 head/cam (Which is identical to early 1983 533i/633 heads and cams). You need to check your ECU to get more information on what unit is running of of and see if that helps you to determine which car it would have come from. But I wouldn't rule it out just yet. You could have an M90 still or some flavor of an M30B32 engine too(US or euro L jet) .
I agree From the research I have done it seems M90's have flat tops not piano tops
Interesting how could I have been wrong about the piano tops! I could swear everywhere said that m90s were piano. Funny I have a dirty m30 high comp in my e24, i should check out those pistons. As for ecu this cars running a 0280001122 which I believe is a stock b28 L jet ecu. I could be wrong but this car seems to be running all original 528i engine management. You know more than me! Thanks for chiming in!
Can confirm about pistons. I have one of both versions. I recently came across a 79 635csi euro car with a dogleg. Definitely will be going to see if it too has an m90. Cheers
@@m3nameisjosh464 That is a pretty big clue, so I would suspect it may be M30B32 US LJet from my quick searching, which uses the same ECU. Possibly the 8.8:1 US or 9.3:1 Euro Ljet variety. Shame you couldn't read any piston markings with the boroscope!
@@op4spitfire that sounds pretty likely given my research, what about the 3,5 on the block, would a euro 3.2 read 3.5 on the block? Shame it couldn’t be easy and the stamps about the starter still be present, they were grinded off, likely to stop someone from discrediting its an m90. Hmmm
OMG I had a 1980 528i euro grey market car I ABSOLUTELY LOVED 30 years ago! great car, mine was automatic!
Absolutely awesome cars!
@@m3nameisjosh464 the euro bumpers reallllyyy make it so much better as you well know. because of your video i was going to add a chip, but when i pulled my DME it was a sandwiched double board, it didn't want to come apart to get to the chip, what do you know about that?
@@mrkeopele ive never seen that!
Love your channel …. So nice to see appreciation for the brand all the way over there in USA
Thank you man!!!
BMW is a way of life here in the states too 💙
@@BMW_Harls you can say that again!
I think the E12 deserves a M88 engine. That would be awesome!! But I don’t know how available they are in the US but since you have contacts in Europe there should be no problem to find one. I’m looking forward to see what you are going to do with it.
Now this is a great idea! Ive never seen an m88 in united states lmao, but i can try some of my european friends!
E28 is looking good. Glad you are making the E12 your own, looking forward to the suspension transformation. Arachnophobes thank you for swiping that guy off the screen.
I almost threw my laptop when editing🤣🤣🤣
So stoked to see e12 build. Been watching every vid since the first e12 video 3years ago. Crazy journey man, congrats 💪🏾💪🏾
Greetings from Latvia 🇱🇻
Wow you’re a long time watcher! I appreciate you man!!!!
Get an e23, thats missing from your collection, love to see you working on it! Cheers from Bahrain!
Had one of those already! Haha
exciting times im in my zone while watching your videos just so interesting keep them comming josh 🙂
Thank you sir!
Heck yeah man just found your contact. I have an 87 535is e28 and just finding info is tricky even being at a repair shop and using there software minimal info shows up. You provide good knowledge. Keep it man, would love to pick your brain someday
Thank you bro!!!
Nice vid, Josh. Looking forward to more updates! :)
Thanks Mike!
e12 is gona be sick regardless of what you decide to throw in it. hyped to see what you get up to 🙏🏻
Thank you bro!
Always nice to make your own car better. 👌🏻
Whenever i get the chance! Lol
can’t wait to see that E9 video 😎
Gotta film it this week!
Great video man!!!
Thanks Jesse!!
hey bro, looking to buy the cover for the fuel sending unit in the trunk out of that parts car
Could you swap the 5 speed in and rebuild the 3.5 for the e12 ? Contact JE pistons they make oversized pistons in pretty much any compression ratio you want. It would haul ass! Love the e12 by the way 👌
Thank you! I could definitely rebuild it, but id like to find out which engine it is first
@@m3nameisjosh464 that's fair enough mate did you find out if it had a number on the side of the block ? I have a 3.5 e28 euro engine in the garage I can compare the number to if that helps ?
@@harveydolden8572 yeah i showed numbers in video, if you want to compare thatd be awesome!
Would you be interested in a semi clean 91 E34 M5 ?
Depends on the price. Dm me on instagram!

LMFAO yes i swiped m screen hahaha
I was editing and almost threw my computer hahahs
Sadly from 2030 on all the combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in EU :-( In Germany the Green party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing petrol stations to only one state owned peoples gas station per city or county. :-(
That is horrible news:(
7:09 WHAT IS THAT IN THE BACKGROUND
You caught me😅😅
If you sell the 3.5 soon, let me know, I might be interested for my car, I was debating getting an m70 with a manual from Wisconsin but it’s too much of a swap for me right now.
Idk when id have it pulled to be honest, likely not for a year plus
13:01… so sell me e28 w m30b35 use profits for s54 or euros50b32 for the perfect e12
😮
Yo josh what do you daily drive?
Whatever Im currently working on or just purchased. Varies, but i have a pickup truck for hop in and go
How much for the side loader diff?
Unsure yet, if LSD itll be $$$$
@@m3nameisjosh464 I’m mainly looking for “clip style” stub axels from side loaders. Not the bolt style found in e9s. If you need a limited slip for a side loaded I can help. Keep up the hard work. Great channel. Thanks for the response.
@@teddyroweshow im unsure what type this car has, the pass side got destroyed in accident too, but thank you!!
This reminds me of M539 Restoration channel just more talking and less work.
If you think Josh doesn't put the work in, you're not paying attention.
This wasn’t a work video. If you want full videos of work check out build series vids
