You asked for opinion, so here it is. On your channel you can do anything you think is right. As a viewer, I have a right to watch or not. Personally I enjoy watching bag reviews. I am not interested in budget shirts made in China or fake diamonds.

Deb, your channel, you decide what you show. It’s stupid to think that just because you like luxury bags, you can’t like something that is not luxury. Price point doesn’t determine whether someone likes a product or not. You should definitely link things below, what you’re wearing, a lipstick color, etc. Sheesh people are so annoying to have so many opinions about what you tube creators do. You can do whatever you want as long as you are genuine and honest. I am here to listen to someone I enjoy listening to. Have a great day!

I think it’s perfectly reasonable for a content creator to make money for the work that they put in. However, as in any other career, when it becomes more about money/sponsorships and less about the content, it shows and turns people off. As long as the initial enthusiasm, honesty, and focus on content remain, there isn’t an issue! Thank you for the hard work that you put in making these videos for others to enjoy. 😀

Hi Deb, I really enjoyed listening to your perspective. I have been following you for a really long time and you are a favorite of mine to watch. You are very smart and you have a kind heart. I feel like we have a lot in common when it comes to handbags and I really enjoy all of your bag reveals and thoughts. You have every right to grow your channel and get compensated for your hard work. Keep doing what you enjoy, I have no doubt that you will always keep your integrity.

Great topic Deb. So firstly for me, you tube is basically entertainment. Like watching a movie, reading a book, Listening to an audiobook. Sure people should be able to make money off of their videos. It takes a lot of time to regularly put out videos. And we are entertained by them. In terms of sponsorships, I consider those as a form of payment. The reason I think some people may have a problem with them is when someone who has never worn an item from a particular company, or of it’s the type of item that seems out of character for that you tuber is promoted. For instance, someone who only ever carries very high end luxury bags, and a company sends them a bag and sponsors the video, and the you tuber is raving about this bag that she would never carry or go out and buy on her own. And is never seen carrying g on her IG posts for instance. Or someone who only wears very high end luxury precious name brand jewelry like van cleef or Cartier, is promoting a cheap jewelry brand and may or may not actually be wearing the jewelry they were gifted in their real life. That can seem disingenuous to some people I imagine. None of these bother me, but I take the sponsored videos and what they are advertising with a grain of salt. But there is never a reason to be rude or mean to anyone putting out a video. Everyone is welcome to click out if it if they don’t like what’s being talked about in a video.

the more unique and “professional” style videos I’ve seen of yours is when you go to the factory or the showroom and we get to see what happens there. I loved seeing you (briefly) try to build a Dior bag. so whether or not you got paid for that or are “soliciting sponsorships” I find those kind of videos valuable because it teaches me something new. I get to feel like I’m having a fun, new experience I wouldn’t otherwise. It’s quality but not overly produced. and it’s hosted by YOU.
Everyone has an opinion, but I think you’re right to do what you want and it’s your thoughts and perspective that keep people coming back. There will always be opposing viewpoints and opinions no matter what you do.

Deb, your channel is very transparent and honest. I certainly want you to continue doing what you’ve been doing . Your channel is refreshing and I always look forward to watching 😊Continue to grow your channel.
The issue I have with other UA-cam channels is that they are not transparent neither is their sponsorship . For instance they’ll promote things they know they’ll never wear or use. I can give you two examples of UA-camrs that promote items ( hopefully you can figure who they are without me using their names 😂)
One UA-camr who recently announced she’ll stepping away from UA-cam did a Temu sponsorship. I know for sure this classy and well dressed UA-camr is NOT buying clothes from Temu ! Yet she did a video on their clothes.
Another UA-camr who does massive unboxings her name starts with a “ C” does so much commercials on her channel for samorga ! You think when click on you’re getting a review or unboxing but the rest of the video she’s selling you trinkets or charms for your bag! I know for sure she’s not prancing around Florida with these $2 sparkling letters and charms hanging from her $15,000 Birkin! Yet she pushes a lot of “ nick -nacks” or what you Brits call “ bits and bobs” just nonsense stuff. Or she’ll unboxing $60,000 worth of Tiffany jewelry then try to sell us low quality jewelry while she’s drenched head to toe with over $100,000 in jewelry . It’s not honest. Know what I mean? She’s not wearing the sponsorship cheap items. Yet we are suppose to buy it?
We can tell who’s genuine and who’s not. Don’t take “ gifts” or sponsored items if you truly don’t like or believe in the brand ( item) . That’s my point.
    This was a great topic . 😊

This is an interesting topic and btw unboxings are still probably my fave to watch and I can’t even tell you why ! It’s your channel so your choice, I like all your content sometimes it’s the creator we like not just the content! Sometimes if I’m looking for something specific I’m not sure if the “influencer” is being honest or just because they are getting paid for it but I think you are always true to yourself so I’d trust your review. Finally I definitely think it’s ok for make money it’s still your time at the end of the day ❤

  • @abigailr995

You always make such thoughtful posts/videos and you won't be able to please everyone. People do look for different things while watching and you probably can't cater to everyone. I think you should make the content that makes you happy or you enjoy the most. I think you are very honest with sponsorships so it doesn't bother me that it appears in your videos. I think sponsorships are only an issue when it seems clear that creators won't use the product themselves (but willing to claim they do!).
I personally only watch smaller channels/those who do it as a hobby are more relatable. It's great to see the joy on your face while doing an unboxing. I like to watch videos with unboxing/hauls, opinions of luxury fashion based issues + people reviewing new collections with their personal thoughts/input as often very fun. My advice is do your thing and honestly your subscripters are growing so you're obviously doing something right.

I think an important factor for me watching a UA-cam channel is whether or not the person is talking about the item they’re wearing/like because they’re sharing something they enjoy or is it because they’re trying to sell it to me to make money?
It might seem like a subtle distinction, but if I feel like I’m being sold to, pushed to buy the item so the person can earn a commission, It’s a big turn off. If however, they seem genuine and have built up credibility elsewhere on their channel, Then I greatly appreciate hearing what they like and don’t like whether or not they have been paid by that brand in the past (provided it is disclosed). I think it’s the *current* sponsorships that feel the most like infomercials.

Can you imagine if my patients would need to listen to me selling them something in my office for 20 minutes of their appointment before I helped them?! Absolutely preposterous. So for idyl what I don't like about people promoting them, is i only hear about the jewelry when creators get a gift. I want to know that if you love a product talk about it, and buy it beyond the gifted item, it's the i am supposed to believe you love idyl when you never unbox it because you bought it. This makes me sad that you must deal with this.
I believe the majority of what I consider negative comments come from hate and jealousy.
If you ask if they want to see X and they say no, then that is ok because you are trying to gauge interest and where to spend your time. Even if you decide to go forward with the content, then they can choose not to watch. Even Jesus went after the one lost sheep because they benefited. The rest can just chill and wait.
Also, I love it when folks put in links to what they are wearing. It keeps me from scrolling through hundreds of comments to see if someone already asked and you gave them the links. Think about how we watch one video and other videos with related content suggested to us. I started watching YT when I turned 40 to figure out how to keep my wrinkles at bay. That led to me following makeup artists, clothes hauls, luxury purse hauls and more recently contemporary purse hauls. If they do not want to watch that extra content, watch the part they want and skip over the rest. I watch the Superbowl for the commercials and skip over the game.
Any content on YT is informative and/or entertaining. Do we not pay to go to seminars to learn, watch tv to be entertained or even to get lost in the moment to forget about the chaos all around us? Time is money and you should be compensated in all forms. Editing takes more time than filming.
You always want to get better, who would not? If I start watching a video and it is dark, grainy, or shaky because they are using one hand to record, I click off. What good is a review if you cannot see it clearly? You need to recoup the cost of putting out clear content.
If you did not have sponsored videos, how would I not have known about Forever Flowers and get a discount? Plus, you are helping small businesses who are struggling to take off and stay afloat.
I want to make these videos worthy your time, so you keep doing them. You know I adore your accent and sweet personally and that alone is worth a listen. So, I try to watch to the end, like and comment when I can (or not too lazy to do so).
Keep doing what you are doing. I would miss you if you did not.

I don't understand people who watch luxury videos and then complain about luxury. I would just disregard those comments and wonder why they aren't watching videos on helping the world.
Yes you absolutely should make money from UA-cam, it's work and many people support themselves that way. I find it funny that anyone would object to it at all. It's your time, and it's a lot of time to put together and edit a video. Lots of creators don't even interact with their viewers like you do.
If you get something from someone, and you love it or not, as long as you're honest about it, you're fine.

I don't have any issues with youtubers earning money off their work. I do tend to question some sponsorships when you never see the pieces again or the product doesn't seem like something that fits with them, but that's not really my business. Although I like seeing lots of new bags, they are very expensive and I'm just as happy with a vlog through a store showing new items/bags as I am with someone doing tons and tons of hauls on things they may just buy and plan to return. If I need details about a specific bag, I will usually search for videos specifically on that bag, because I like the detailed videos about wear and tear and what fits, etc. I watch luxury youtube for entertainment and education and will watch people as long as I feel like they're true to themself and I like the content they're producing.

You are in charge of what you present on your channel. It's not anyone's business if you earn money from the videos you have taken the time to make for utube. I appreciate your level of professionalism, honesty, and sense of humor. A few years ago, I turned on a utube channel. The presenter looked like she had barely gotten out of bed, did her unboxing on her bed, and rambled on and on. I immediately turned off the channel. When I'm not interested in a sponsored product that's being shared, I just fast forward through the video . . . no big deal. Frankly, I think some viewers share critical or petty comments due to their online anonymity.

I like when people share what they are using and enjoying in the video, sponsored or not. Then, we don't have to waste time in the comments asking where everything is from! If I don't want to watch the sponsored content, I fast forward. It does slightly turn me off to a brand when EVERY single youtuber is promoting the same product at the same time period. However, should you be allowed to share whatever you want, accept as many sponsorships as you want, and talk about what you want on YOUR channel? ABSOLUTELY! 💯 percent! You said it in your previous video that you realised you can't please everyone all the time and that you were just going to post what interests you, which I totally agree with.
I don't have any problems with youtubers making money or being sponsored but yes, you should only agree to work with a company whose products you truly love and would buy using your own money. And you shouldn't be afraid to say what you don't like about an item or maybe give suggestions on how to care for say a silk dress (eg do you dry clean only?).
I don't blame the youtubers themselves but some companies like Idyll have just oversaturated their sponsorship (every single youtuber I watch has done Idyll) so it just ends up being boring and annoying when someone talks about it. Also I really hate when a youtuber's title of their video (eg unboxing a bag) but 15mins into the video, they're still talking about Vivia shoes, it feels like clickbait.
I think Chase Amy does sponsorships well, I think maybe because the pieces she chooses is her style and makes me think she genuinely likes it, and also I think she makes them short and sweet but still with enough information about a piece.
I personally like to hear about luxury and non luxury items that you love especially like the Novo blouse you're wearing. Since you're not sponsored, I'm more likely to believe you genuinely like it vs a sponsored item.

Regarding making money from youtube, I think that content creators have an advantage in being able to sell the bags they want to move on that so many people see on line.
I’m not going to pay to watch ( patreon).
Regarding sponsorships, at certain times, we will see three or four people showing the same clothing or jewelry items and honestly, that’s annoying. I frequently fast forward through those sales pitches.

I have only been looking at the luxury UA-cam space for about a year… I would like you to know I enjoy your videos because it’s based on your personal style. That aside I have to say that lilysilk and idyll give me the ick - I do skip or even stop watching the moment a UA-camr starts talking about them - it just seems like every account is talking about them … I honestly don’t mind the sponsorship but it’s like looking at repetitive advertising… it’s such a turn off…so while I have been made aware of these brands - I have been de-influenced… also happens to demellier bags - I guess some creators are being sent gifts …

Anyone that judges what buy doesn’t have to watch your channel and, honestly, says more about how poorly they think of themselves. If they rant about the economy and how these videos are encouraging people to buy things they can’t afford , then, again, they don’t have to watch and as adults should be able to manage their finances without blaming their obsessions on a content creator. As far as monetizing the channel is concerned, I’ve seen so many content creators become so focused on sponsors and money making videos that they veer from what many viewers originally tuned in for. I can’t imagine the time and effort that it takes to make a video, and if you’re doing it bc it’s a passion I can understand, but trying to make a living at this seems like a huge commitment.

Of course you should make money from YT. It takes time to film, edit and post videos. It’s free entertainment for viewers; but I can’t watch channels such as Mel in Melbourne because she tries to hide sponsored videos within fake content. If someone is transparent about it than it doesn’t bother me. Make videos of the content you want, that’s the only way to be honest with your audience. 😊 The problem with some sponsorships is they hit up EVERY luxury YTber and it just becomes kind of annoying & harder to believe when so many are recommending them.

As a UA-camr creator and Consumer…Idyl and other sponsorships - my sensored opinion (if you have spent your own money on it or you would spend your own money I think I feels more authentic) in my opinion. I also question some of these brands fitting into the aesthetic of a luxury channel that doesn’t otherwise discuss dupes (for diamonds) or cheaper alternatives of bags etc unless gifted. As creators in a niche area of YT we attract a niche crowd. I watch a-lot of content and I’m not clicking on dupes, cheap alternatives etc but when they are hidden collabs that’s even more annoying. I have YT Premium so I don’t want adverts. I controversially think that nobody invited us to the platform so do we have a right to expect an income for the time we volunteer to talk about a passion? Questionable. 🤨 we aren’t offering education, skills or capabilities, we’re speeding up market research .

This is my conundrum: I switched to UA-cam from watching TV because I was aggravated by the excessive amount of commercials. I chose to join “premium” UA-cam at a cost of $19.99 per month with the lure from UA-cam that I can then miraculously watch “ad free” videos! Well in the last year or so I now see the video channels that I have committed to subscribe to now have “Sponsors”. Instead of fast forwarding through TV commercials I now find I have to fast forward through UA-cam commercials yet continuing to pay for the privilege of paying $19.99/month. I live in the US. I don’t know if this applies worldwide.
I’m not against my favorite channel content creators making money, but I’m feeling let down by UA-cam in general by the amount I pay for their false claims that I can watch commercial free videos.

If you go on a shopping tour and show what you've bought thats something different, thats fine. With "hauls" I mean the deranged UA-camrs ordering like 100 pieces of clothing and 50 eyeshadow palettes every week just for the content and throw it all away in their "closet cleanout"-videos 6 weeks later.😂 Of course you can make money from YT...why wouldn't you? Do what you feel is right! It'll shine through if your passionate about your topic.
As for ads/ sponsorship - YT, has to a point, taken over from fashion magazines etc. People paid for magazines, and there were ads and sponsored content in those - if we didn't like it, we didn't buy the magazine. I personally don't mind ads/ sponsored content/ affiliate links as long as it's obvious. At the end of the day, you have outgoings as a content creator (camera, lighting etc), so even if you're not doing this full time, there are costs involved.
As for whether it's relevant or not - there are always people who can't or wont buy luxury, but on the flip side, regardless of how the economy is doing, there are alwsys people who can afford luxury. For me, this is part information and part entertainment. I have a few luxury bags, but I'm never going to have more than a few. It doesn't bother me that others have more than me, I can only be pleased for them. They've probably worked hard to get them!
I suppose qt the end of the day, I believe that if the content riles you up enough that you can't leave constructive criticism but only snide, then you're probably in the wrong place!❤

You are stuck between a rock and a hard place, and as I said before you won’t please everybody no matter what you say or do.
I think most people viewing are looking for honesty more than anything else from the content creator.
I don’t think people use to switch on youtube back in the early days with the idea that the creator was going to try and sell them something, but in 2024 we now know that youtube is very much like QVC, and its become an advertising platform. UA-cam went from novices at home with a camera, to a business site within a few years of launching, and as time has gone on I think this has become even more apparent.

Great video Deb. My view on this is pretty clear, whilst it is a choice to make youtube videos talking about something we like and enjoy, there is a lot of work involved in continually making high quality, enjoyable content. Most channels I watch, I watch for the person. As a person who also creates content, my likes extend beyond luxury. I therefore feel a creator should talk about anything that is true to them, that they genuinely enjoy, my wardrobe is not all luxury, far from it. I have Biba dupes of the prada net bag, I see no difficulty in sharing brands I enjoy. If people do not wish to watch it, they do not have to. And my view will always strongly be supportive of people putting themselves out there, making content, therefore I am delighted when they are paid to find a job or side hustle that allows them to make an income from something they enjoy. Furthermore, our channels provide value not only in the information they give, but in that they are entertainment in themselves, no different than other entertainers being paid.

But, if I'm going to subscribe it's because I enjoy the personality and authenticity of the person's channel-- like yours and Cassie Thorpe's (a ray of sunshine) and Amelia's. And if you make some money off of an item that you publicize and that you genuinely enjoy-- that's great for everyone. What you do seems like a lot of work! I think the push back with brands like Lily Silk comes from how everyone is hawking their stuff, it's annoying. But maybe that's just because they aren't my style. I love the Idyl jewelry, so it bothers me a lot less that I see it everywhere on social media.

Hi Deb! I came across your channel a few months ago. Along with your collection, I enjoy your perspective. After years of being a silent watcher I started my own channel. I can say this with my limited experience--content creation, at any scale, is WORK! No, it's not life or death work, but it does require time, creativity, and money to grow. Luxury UA-cam is a spectrum, and this corner is dominated by smart, savvy women. My observation is that questions and statements like, "Why should you paid for this?" and "This isn't work," comes into play disproportionally in areas where women thrive. I'll get off my soap box now. I love your channel! Keep doing what your doing and get PAID! Most audiences simply ask for transparency, which you always provide.

Thank you so much and I love the fact you started a channel. I find it very liberating and freeing but at the same time there is judgment all around x

I found you through Amelia. Definitely don’t mind you earning money on UA-cam. I’m not a fan of the clothing sponsorships. I like handbags and jewelry. I just fast forward through the sponsorship I’m not interested in. No biggie. Go for it earn some money for more handbags! You and Amelia are fabulous UA-camrs. I have zero problem with selling. Dacob has a membership which I will probably join. You do you. That’s why I’m here. :) Keep it up! Let’s talk luxury.

Do what you wish; it’s your channel. If someone doesn’t like your video, they don’t have to watch it. Yes, you should receive money from sponsors and yes, be proud of your channel and your community. Some people simply have a bad attitude about everything so don’t let their snarky comments affect you. I enjoy your videos immensely so move forward and have fun with your channel. Sending hugs to you:)❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Anita

My thoughts. You have every right to earn money and monetise your channel. I have no problem with sponsorship or other sales talk if they are dealt within a business like manner up front and with no subterfuge. That way they can easily be fast forwarded. What I dislike (and which you are not guilty of but some other luxury content makers are) is when they accept bags from brands (which frankly they wouldn't buy otherwise) and disguise them in amongst their general content - for example, their top 10 bags which includes at least 1 gifted bag from a "reasonable cost" bag maker. It gets particularly irritating when they keep showcasing the bag time and time again. The content makers with high subscriber numbers are usually the worst. Personally I'm sick to death of Atelier August, Demellier and Lalage Beaumont. I don't think anybody begrudges advertising - it just needs to be in plain view.

I do understand that some content creators can tarnish the industry for all of us. There are people who genuinely love the more affordable bags as well as luxury bags - however people decide not to believe this sometimes as others have made it feel disingenuous x

Hi Deb, I am watching this a second time to make sure I am giving you my opinion on all the issues that you raised. I will endeavour to list them in the order which you posed.
    1. Unboxing videos - I have no issue with unboxing videos accompanied by first impressions. However, I find the more in-depth wear-and-tear videos to be of more value.
    2. luxury in an economic crisis - I have no issues with you talking about luxury products; that’s why we come to your channel. However, it appears that a common issue these days with luxury brands is declining quality. Particularly when things are maybe a bit tight and with rising prices consumers don’t want to spend their hard earned cash on something that ends up being a dud, whether from a design (wearability) issue or a quality issue. I appreciate when you address design and quality points of a bag and even more so after it has been worn for a significant period so I can assess whether at that (higher designer) price point it is worth it to me.
    3. Ad sales from you tube - as a general proposition, I have no problem with this provided that the content remains genuine and not unnecessarily controversial or misleading/click bait for higher views (not suggesting that you do or would do that).
    4. Sponsorships - I feel like a sponsorship is more genuine when you have been an existing long term customer of a brand before a sponsorship deal is struck. If I don’t like a sponsorship promotion though I will just skip ahead in a video. I have no problem with you discussing a brand that you love. Sometime these things can be really helpful. For example, a few conte t creators have spoken about Goelia. As it happens my city has a physical Goelia store. I would never have gone in without those reviews. I found that the in person quality of products using natural fibres (cashmere hoodies and wool cardigans) was very good and have ended up buying 4 clothing items so far.
    5. I am happy to watch content on things that you love. I would hope that this related to a brand or product that you have been a customer of or used for a fair period of time to give a comment on longevity/quality.
    6. Affiliate links - okay provided clearly marked as affiliate
7 making money - fine by me provided you continue to give your genuine opinions.
    Hope this is helpful.

Deb, damned if you do, damned if you don't. Continue to do what you love, your core supporters will always be here. If you can monetize a hobby or something you enjoy, go for it. I will always watch unboxing videos, life happens, including buying luxe goods. UA-cam is entertainment for me, I don't take it personally, people seems to take UA-cam way too seriously ☺

I guess it all comes down to why you started doing this? What’s your original purpose of starting this channel? Did your view to your channel change over time? People comes to these channels for different reasons; and that’s why you can’t pleased everyone. They will always be critics, me included, about the contents of this channels, and others alike, when the contents are not aligned to our expectations. For me, I’m here to listen to the creators’ opinions about luxury brands, and their collections, some for educational purposes and admiration. It is sometimes good to hear about other brands but, I am not a fan when it comes to affordable “dupes”. Luxury bags are not skincare products. If I wants affordable dupes I can just buy any bags and sometimes, it feels like being told “If you can’t afford this bag I have, then you can buy this instead”. Just my thought.

Interesting points. I started my channel for a few reasons on reflection. Firstly to put myself out there to try to film videos as I loved watching them. Secondly I had just walked out of my 30 year professional career and needed a focus and some structure. However over time it has evolved as these things generally do. I never thought even one person would watch - now I am building a community and learning so many new skills all the time. So it’s fun for me. It adds structure and a focus and I’m learning. So I want to see where I can take it. I’m a very determined career driven person so that hasn’t changed I guess x

I don't think you can please everyone, it's just the nature of the beast. I say you be you and don't worry about it. You'll retain those who value your content as it stands while you attract others who are like-minded and your channel will grow. If you are approached by brands for partnerships or sponsorships, if you believe in them either because you have had positive experiences with that brand in your "outside life" or you've made a discovery of something that impresses you through the brand, something you think your viewers would like, work with those brands.
Is it okay to make money from your own work?? Absolutely. 4,66 subscribers agree.
If you keep trying to please everyone you'll wind up exhausted and unhappy. No one is forced to watch this or any other channel. If those who don't wish good things for you decide to go elsewhere, twice the amount of truly good people will find you.

I went to start off by saying I absolutely absolutely love your channel! I find your videos very enjoyable to watch however, I do watch these videos for unboxing, reviews, and genuine opinions on bags.
It’s your channel and you have right to talk about whatever you want however, I’m not going to lie. I am so sick of hearing about ideal diamonds and Lilley silk. And the reason for that is, it’s on every single channel I watch so it is basically bombarding me with the same thing over and over again, which is not your fault. It’s the channels I’m watching. I think if a UA-camr is asked about what they are wearing. It is fine to mention, but hearing about them over and over again gets frustrating.
Again, love your videos and will continue to watch!

yes you can make money, of course / i think the term 'haul' is kind of outdated - just show us what you've bought. I enjoy it it's fine, I like to know how much things cost too / I love seeing what stuff fits in a bag / I've mentioned before about time stamping an ad or sponsoship and I just get annoyed when half a vid is about some blouse as part of a stealth sponsor section when I've come for handbags lol or if all items are from 'faretch' for example (not directed at you btw other people do this); just be like 'here's the ad' - commercial bradcasting does it - anyway keep up good work - grow your channel and buy more fabulous bags

Of course you should be able to make money for your work-it isn't for charity.I am sure you spend hours on each video and if you endorse a product that you feel truly is quality/useful you should be compensated if someone purchases through your recommendation. If someon😂 has watched you long they can be assured you are not "selling out". Ignore any haters. And if they don't like they certainly do not have to view.
