What do you think Neil is ultimately trying to do? How does Faye play a role in it?
Hmm. It _is_ rather peculiar to have the technology to make minds backups and not jump to thoughts about the singularity, yes. As for Faye's role... I actually think he's just trying to save her, though in the 'forfeit' branch he does say their agreement would be "mutually beneficial". It might just be that he needs a guinea pig for his concept of making a backed up mind live in a virtual world, and she's the perfect between-the-lines real life test case, since it doesn't count as backing up an actual patient's mind.
I think that the reason he downloaded faye was to basically create some sort of Sigmund program that could act in place of the workers that could go into their minds and do Neil and Eva’s jobs for them. She could do what she did to Collin and be a sort of guardian angel. I think this because the constantly talk about Faye doing their job for them in a fraction of the time and at the end the other doctor said something along the lines of “ what’s the asset” don’t quote me tho. I’m not completely sure I was too busy contemplating life but I will go back and check

SwankyBox I think,that He made a Backup from her because he wants to get an AI in his Machine. This AI could offer great potenial for Niel's research. What if he wants to have the AI to work for them...like in the way that he gives tve machine a personality?
That...actually makes a lot of sense. And at the end of "Finding Paradise", after the credits have rolled, we see Neil and the two other doctors looking at the machine, and Neil says something about how "She's our solution."
Can we talk about the "woman in the brown dress" that helped Potato get her stuffed animal from the pond as well? I think it hint at something.

If you talk to Potato when Neil is getting his pills from the car she says that a "lady in brown" saved her teddy bear, and she didn't even touch the water. This description fits Faye perfectly. After the Faye fights, Neil downloads her data into the machine. I think we are in Neil's memories, and Neil's machine is being used to traverse (which means it might be Neil himself trying to change his memories), and Faye is inside the machine, and therefore inside the memories.

What if he made a different version of the helmet to test on people who aren’t dying? For people who want to alter their life but needs to test it. So he decides to test it on himself and probably causes pain resulting in him taking pain killers. They never really mentioned what would happen if a person who isn’t at the brink of death had their memories altered. I don’t think he would be willing to risk Eva’s life to do something as selfish as save his own. Idk, I’m just making a assumption...
I think you might be right about the part with him altering with his own mind. It would explain the pain he's in since the machine is usually used on people dying, but exactly why he's doing it I don't know. It could be, like in the video, that he wants to become "immortal" or that he simply wishes for his life to having worked out differently. I am sure there will be more info on this in the following minisodes or maybe even the next game.
if both of you have played the game.. at the ending when roxanne and robert entered his office and see neil working on the machine, hopefully the other experts would know what is neil really working on and have a better idea whats going on with him.
in the minisodes it seems to be pretty clear on how neil secretly records the recordings of ambient sounds and want to feel less lonely and part of a community.
In a minisode, there was an Eva copy stopping Eva from driving away if I remember right. Something tells me that Eva really is in a world Neil had created and either she is dying or Neil is dying. Or maybe they're both dying or already dead and trapped in the world Neil created? What if... everybody is dead and living as copies in a virtual world?

Memory Eva: who is supposed to be a playback of a memory who became self aware and is trying to stop neil

everything that is happening didn’t actually happen have you ever wondered why we only get specific cases and not all the cases its because those cases where failed cases they never took Johny to the moon they never found out that Faye was not real so he is just redoing everything to make it perfect, but of course he goes nonstop to change stuff so he is not well and he needs his pills to cope,
and lastly he hired Faye in this new world to help him with anything he cannot do himself

With him mentioning Faye being the key to an afterlife, it might be worth noting that the Boss Fight with her seems to be a parody of the 'you fight God at the end' trope found in many JRPG's.

Hey, one more thing. In 'To The Moon', when Jhonny and River was about to launch, you'll realized that the screen flashing red (Meaning that Jhonny is dying). And in that moment, where Dr. Neil and Dr. Eva was sitting/standing on the bridge, there was ANOTHER DR.NEIL BEHIND DR. NEIL. I don't have a theory about this...maybe you can explain to us? I'm actually ready to bet you're right on the money with this, and it makes me love Neil all the more.
However, I also believe there is a plot twist to the plot twist. I just don't know what it is for sure yet.
The plot twist that comes to mind is that we're already inside of Eva's memory, and parts of this game were within Eva's mind. Basically a memory within a memory. This is going off of what we see in the second holiday episode.
Since Neil is losing his memory (as seen again with the bike incident when he was going to get his pills), it makes me wonder how far back the signs go in the earlier games.

ah, you're speaking of the scene whereby we see rosalene donning the helmet. im hoping all that is happening, neil can at least fulfil some of his desires in reality, instead of only being able to fulfil all in his head.

Oh my goodness, I've just finished the game and immediately headed towards this video. I've actually played around with this idea before, and I certainly think it may be the case. Neil is really one mad scientist. Also at the very end of the game, he presents Faye to Roxanne and Rob as a "solution". I personally feel like Neil is going to use Faye as a way to automate their jobs, and since their company seems to be in an unstable condition as seen in the minisodes, that just might be what will happen. I think using Faye as an AI is just a small step towards making Paradise and he may have only used it to get Rox off his back by serving the company.
This still leaves us with a lot of unanswered questions about the second minisode though. Why Eva is strapped to a machine and sees a copy of herself is strange. I wonder if Eva is somehow tapping into this Paradise while she is still alive like a VR game and wants to go in to do some unspecified business. I worry what the copy of Faye would feel once she finds out that Neil was using her.
Whatever happens, things are about to get crazy.

Oh man, Just finished playing though the game and oh boy, I think you may be on to something with your videos! course I think we could still uses a few more mini-episodes or another installment to have a better feel for it. My mind was blown seeing the parallels with Faye and the bird ( I mean, brown wings were kinda a give away )
I would speculate that Neil is trying to immortalise himself using Faye as a template

I mostly agree with this theory. Maybe just some slight disagreement on the role Faye is playing in Neil's plan, but that's not consequential. However, I'm more curious about what Eva is up to.
It's evident that what we see is actually simulation of Neil's memories (the lady in brown, Faye riding the motorcycle, Eva wearing Neil's helmet, etc.) and that the real Eva is creating happy memories for Neil with his helmet (holding Xmas party), but what is her purpose?
Eva using Neil's helmet means she finds out his secrets and decides to create nice memories for him, but that can't be Neil's wish since if it were, he wouldn't have created his own memory machine with the function of turning mere imagination into reality in the simulation world (which is Faye's ability, as Neil said).
Therefore, it was Eva herself decides to create those memories for Neil, but is she doing this to help Neil die happy? Or to change his mind about something? And what does she finds out about Neil that leads to such a decision? Is it Neil's purpose of building that machine? His true desire or dream? His regrets?
Hopefully someone sees this comment. It would be nice to have some discussion!
I agree that at least "Finding Paradise" (and probably more parts of this whole series) is a journey through someone's memories or we just see Faye's point of view all the time and she is like omnipotent ADMIN within the machine. (If you talk to Potato when Neil is getting his pills from the car, she says that a "lady in brown" saved her teddy bear, and she didn't even touch the water. Also, he sees again the bike that he comments on at the start of the game. He says "Wait a minute--" like he's about to recall seeing it before, but then there's this white flash, and he says "Huh, that's a nice bike. Sure wish I had one like it..." - this is all Faye and that white flash seems like an alternation, because normally it was too early for Faye to even exist. Neil downloads her data onto the machine ONLY AFTER the fight against Faye, so if "Finding Paradise" would be reality, not a memory, we couldn't have seen Faye before the download.)

I think the thesis of the above video is true - Neil wants to create a paradise (inside a machine) to which people's consciousness will be transferred after their physical death in the real world. Perhaps Neil wants to create this paradise just for himself (because he is dying), but things are getting out of hand. After Neil's physical death in the real world, Neil's parents and/or Eva cannot cope, and the constant contact with Neil's consciousness in the artificial "paradise within the machine" does not allow them to come to terms with their loss. You know, it's hard for you to come to terms with someone's loss when you can see that person (or rather their consciousness/intelligence, but still you can normally talk, do things) in paradise inside a machine at virtually any time. Perhaps this information that the machine can store the consciousness of a deceased person gets out to the public, or someone from the protests against Sigmund Corp. steals the machine and discovers the "paradise" hidden inside it. Sigmund Corp. turns into a factory of fake people (hence perhaps the title of the last part of the series - "Impostor Factory"). People begin to covet the machine and its paradise, they even kill each other for it. Maybe Eva goes on a journey through her memories (I'm referring to the Christmas Minisodes) to find out the secret of the creation of paradise and destroy it (by the way, she is tempted by the vision of staying in the virtual world of the machine forever with Neil, maybe even Faye will want to prevent Eva as the destruction of this paradise also means the destruction of Faye).
I think the final message of the whole "To The Moon" series will consist of 3 points:
- You can create the illusion of another life, but it will still only be an illusion, therefore something bittersweet ("To The Moon").
- It's not worth changing your life, because even failures, unfulfilled dreams shape us the way we are, those things creates us ("Finding Paradise").
- Trying to create immortality can lead living people (especially loved ones) to eternal despair and failure to come to terms with loss, and ultimately to madness. People may even specifically kill themselves for this reason, in order to join others "in paradise" (the upcoming "Impostor Factory").
Let's not forget that the death of the grandfather of the main creator, Kan Gao, contributed to the creation of this series. Perhaps when faced with the death of his family member, he asked himself questions:
- What if we could create memories at will, especially when we regret something?
- What if it was possible to have constant contact with the deceased, to create such a paradise with souls/consciousness (without a physical body)? Would that make people happy or would it make them unable to come to terms with death?
This is probably the only time I actually followed through playing a game after a spoiler warning told me to... however, I forgot to finish watching this video after like 5 weeks.

Great video Swanky, it took me a while to write this comment as my Internet has been on edge since Wednesday evening. So it has been on and off (even as I'm writing this comment my Internet lost its connection on 3 occasions), I may have an idea as to what Neil might have.
Neil likely has a Neurological condition that is slowly trying to kill him on the inside. I haven't played much of the games or caught up with it for a while, but as far as I have seen, he hasn't hinted at anything in particular that may give us a clue as to what it is. This is just speculation on my part, Neil could have some kind of P.T.S.D. that involves a past injury or an entirely different condition that requires him to use pain killers to ease the pain for something otherwise without cure. It is hard to say, many could easily point out it being a cancer of sorts but, it doesn't seem like he is in a constant amount of pain nor the inability of mobility.
From that, I can see why he would want to escape such pain, though the unknown goal could honestly be anything at this point. I would write more but my Internet has become relatively unstable. So I'll have to leave it at that.
Yes, this makes sense. Neil is probably working on the new machine trying to transfer his consciousness to a computer. A little bit like the movie "Transcendence" (crappy, but worth seeing). And in this way, Faye is his experiment.
I am curious to see if the next episode will have Neil as the patient... that would be very interesting.

I like this theory and I definitely agree that it's very plausible. It might also explain why the next game in the series is called Imposter Factory. If the consciousness transfer into the virtual world is imperfect, it could created corrupted versions (or "Impostors") of the character. Each attempt to enter the world could potentially create an Impostor.

If what your saying in this video about Neil trying to build a fake world ends up being true, then I wonder if that is why the 3rd game is called "Impostor Factory?" Kan has stated in the video descriptions that there is murder, but also misdirections.
It also makes sense because he removed the firewalls and stuff, perhaps so he could alter his own mind? That's not something anyone can do, especially since remember, the machine altering your memories basically kills the person - that's why they only do it to dying people. Love this video and the previous one too!
it reminds me a lot about another game named "SOMA" which also related to mind transfer and forever paradise, go check out the gameplay and story, its not as emotional as FP was (in fact is more to horror side), but that story is the first story i encounter which makes me think different about mind transfer
great video, I didn't think of it that way, you have made a new sub out of me... my only addition is that I don't think it's just a problem with Niel, as at the end of TtM there is a memory glitch in what appears to be IRL and Niel adjusts his watch/controller. So there is possibility that he is actively doing something within a memory (Eva's) to keep him there. This would make even more since why he is interested in Faye.
Is it ever explained what happened during Neil and Faye's private moment? He somehow managed to persuade her to give him the second/last memory orb (as he had something to offer her in return), and maybe to let him traverse those selected memories near the end of the game (via that hole/rift/vortex).

I think that you're playing through Neils mind and he knows he's 'just a memory'. Eva is going through his mind trying to make his last wish, to never die, but she doesn't know how. But Neil does know how. He's trying to let her know that he knows he's a memory (by saying that the parents are not really them). When she get this, she gives the recorder as a hint (with the recorder working like the token). After that he shows her how to save him. The mashene is both real and there by also in his memory. In his memory he now try's to show how to save something in the mashene, but keeps on failing becouse you enter the last memory of a person, while in this memory he is way earlyer than the memory that you woud enter in real life. That's why he takes it to a pasient in Finding Paradise. Faye was then a happy accident to show Eva that the mashene can save. Now all Eva has to do is link him to his mashenw and save him. This is what I think. If there is anything that I overlooked or missed, than please tell me.

These are really good points but there is still the question of why Eva was shown wearing the helmet in the episodes. After hearing this though. What if Eva is trying to make Neil’s last wish come true? I know this was theorisers before but people kept saying Neil was the next patient when he clearly wasn’t. If anything. Neil is the last patient that we would do and Eva is the one trying to make it happen. That copy of Eva could be the real Eva and she turned of that ghostly thing off. I mean that’s just my opinion.
There is one problem with that theory. Sprcifically, the scene you have shown, in which Eva sees a copy of herself on the street. The problem is simple - for that to happen, there needs to be a living person Eva traversing through the memories and, since there is no-one at all around her, it could only be her own memories.
So, if we are talking about digital paradise, where the memories of the people who died keep living, how is that possible?..
Kan said he didn't want to cry anyone. I really hope Jonny and River will happily live in that alternate reality.

The real question we all need answered is why do the size of Eva's eyes appear to change depending on if she's facing the bottom of the screen or not?

this would explain Neil health, i personally thought Neil was trying to make a way to instantly solve a patients wishes like what Faye did for Colin, it would be in the fraction of a second and require no manual labor. It would also explain why he keeps it secret, because it would put them all out of business. he could also have his own personal goals similar to the theory you have, that was the only thing i was never able to figure out from my own brainstorming.

A Videogame that is so Real you can dive into and since he works like every free Minute (maybe, we dont know) and he is testing the Stuff i thought he „needs“ those Pills. My Theorie may be still right but to be honest I think yours makes Way more Sense since he was saying that its so much wasted potential. I am not Sure why tho. Your theory sounds solid, but I'm pretty sure his medicine is a painkiller addiction. I'm going off the conversation in to the moon where eve finds Neil's painkillers. And painkiller withdrawal is usually painful. So maybe he is just getting and addiction craving? Other than that, it's a pretty solid theory. It'll be interesting to see what happens
