I'd like to see Termina in a later game in the timeline and what will the legends be. Will they be of a green boy of many faces, of red giants, of a mask with evil intent, of a salesman with little time left...
depends on if this is the cycle where link has everything set up *to* save everyone. and if he chooses to do so. instead of... yknow.... resetting via the song of time over and over. which makes me wonder, does time rewind for everyone else or does the apocalypse happen anyway for that particular cycle you decide to leave behind? the full ending heavily implies everything just gets smooshed into their ideal versions with everyone happy and having their personal troubles sorted out (which is funny because for many cases you can just skip and where the scene wouldve played will just show the mask tied to that scene floating in a void. yeah this is news to me)
See. This is why the Hero of Time's story leading up to MM will always be my favorite. This particular Link's story was heavy from the start and only got darker. After all he been through in OoT, Nintendo didn't make his next quest cartoony or cute, it became even more sinister with a more adult tone. It's twisted. It's sad. Amazing work.
Well Link IS an adult in a kid's body in Majora's Mask so it makes sense. While it was the opposite (at first) in Ocarina of Time. I'm pretty sure that by the end of OoT, Link lost all his childhood innocence. And then he just dies according to TP. Shit man, this Link have got to have it the worst of all of them.
When my brother and I played this as kids (I was 9 or 10), I just thought she was letting her sister taste the Chateau Romani because it was a sort of now-or-never thing. Like, if the world's ending, there won't be time for it to damage her liver or anything, so she can just have a taste. When I was older I realized she was trying to get her sister drunk so she'd pass out and sleep through the end of the world, and not feel any fear or pain before they die. That hits way harder.
I like how Romani sounds so optimistic, but Cremia knows that the world is ending and her dialogue is more sad in this scene. She's really looking out for her little sister and making sure she's okay while the world is ending :(
This makes you imagine what it would be like for Romani if the world really ended. She would go to sleep feeling safe in her sister's arms, not realizing she would never wake up.
I played the game but never noticed this until now. That’s a bad habit. Moving so fast that you miss the nuggets of gold that make life what it is. You can even see a look of sadness on her face as they walk to the house. I was her little sister. Blissfully unaware. Living to play. While the older sister had the weight of the world on her shoulders. It’s just a game. Sure. But seeing this as an adult puts things into context.
Not to mention the person she loved was going to marry and she was expected to just suck it up and act as if nothing happened, which is exactly what she did. Among all the characters in video games, I think the one I admire and look up to the most is Cremia, there was such an absurd rollercoaster of emotions around her, things she very well knew she couldn't change, and just took it all like a champ without a single complaint.
That's what made this game the best in the franchise for me: it might have been technically smaller, but every square inch was packed with meaning. The way that every npc had a little schedule and constantly moved about meant there was tons of dialogue and details you could easily miss. It's like an entire game built off of that one missable dialogue with the guard in OoT
I love all the little details this game included if you look for them. I have seen games released in recent years that don't show all of these devotion to investing the player in their world. This game has so many heartbreaking moments as we see its characters reacting to their final day, until you come in.
It’s scary just how dark this game truly is and so many people played through this game never picking up on these dark tragic hidden moments and stories.
Everything about this game is pure perfection. The insane attention to story, character attributes, and heavy implications is insane considering it only took a year to produce. MM remains my favorite game ever because of details like this.
It's not until you get older that you realize what's REALLY happening here. Cremia isn't letting Romani try Chateau Romani for the sake of granting her final wish before they die. She's intoxicating Romani so that she doesn't die in fear. The raw emotion in this game is ASTOUNDING.
The fact Cremia said “see you tomorrow” despite her and Link both being grown up enough to know what’s coming and lying to Romani breaks me. It’s out of love for her younger sister but that still cuts real deep.
@@rareosts5752 yeah It's true. I would argue saying "after how long, though?", but since you just go back In time, nothing has really happened around them xD

I find it intellectually and creatively dishonest, argued for the sake of it, baby's first theory, really. Someone already did make Termina up, it was the writing team for Majora's Mask, which is a work of fiction. It's more fun to think that Link saved a doomed world and went on his way, as the author intended, I think. Or more creative fan theories, like trying to link Termina to the alternate dimension of Phantom Hourglass, or the true origin of the Song of Storms, that sort of thing.
It’s amazing that they put this much hidden character into a game that was made in less of a years time. And the game doesn’t really encourage you to find it either, like there was no reason to look because most games just didn’t add interactions like this at time.
This was the moment that first cemented the game as being my favourite of all time. It's littered with narrative moments like this that don't have any specific rewards for finding them
I think a lot of us skip over the emotional and mental trauma Cremia must be going through. The 3 day cycle started her out with slight hope which quickly devolved into despair in the end... Her looking at Romani while walking back to the house; imagining the bright light of her sisters smile that could have lead to a bright future. Her lie of why Romani is drinking this early so that Romani can possibly be so out of it and not to feel the pain and slip away quietly. And finally Cremia sleeping very closely to the one person in her life she had fought so hard for. This is the failed timeline, something so empty and sorrowful that it leaves a permanent mark when you reset the loop again.
What about the _real_ failed timeline? The one where Cremia spends her final hours not with her loving sister, but with a husk completely broken by whatever _they_ did to her, with nowhere near enough time to even begin to heal?
@@devonm042690 Either kidnapped or not, still a "failed timeline" nonetheless. But I think the saved Romani ending is a bit more tragic considering all the work you put into saving the ranch only for it all to be pointless in the end as Cremia walked Romani into the house with a sad expression on her face. While the kidnapped version is tragic, the player has no real idea what happened to her at the beginning *unless* you fail later on. I personally think saving it all only for everything to be so sad instead of happy is bit more tragic.
Moments like this makes that game absolutely mind-blowing. The very sutble double meaning of letting Romani drink Chateau Romani is absolutely terrific when you understand it. Majora's Mask is definitely the darkest and best episode of the whole Zelda saga. And sincerely one of the best videos game ever made.
to this day It still fascinates me that the most mature and emotionally heavy Zelda game of all time was one that was born out of 80% recycled assets from a previous game (ocarina of time), this is like making a main entry dish out of scraps, maybe that's why this game is my second favorite Zelda game of all time (first is twilight princess).
I remember coming back to the ranch out of boredem near the end of the cycle and coming across the two sisters. It kind of hurt seeing the little sister so oblivious to the situation and her older sister keeping her in the dark. Her getting her drunk made it sting more.
As much as I've played this game, I didn't think of coming back here after getting the Romani's Mask. This game certainly hits different as an adult...😢
It’s that second portion that hits me the hardest. The part where the two sisters are walking back towards the house. Romani being oblivious to the fact that she’s gonna die soon, happily tells Link that she’ll see him in the morning and is smiling at him. Cremia on the other hand is fully aware of what’s going on and reluctantly tells Link that she’ll see him tomorrow, not wanting to scare Romani in their final hours together. She knows they’re both going to die and yet she wants to keep Romani ignorant of the situation so that she can stay her happy and optimistic self. This definitely hits just as hard as the end of the Anju and Kafei quest with the line “We shall greet the morning together.” This game is not only dark, but sad too. It’s truly something special and in my opinion the best game of the franchise.
Majora's Mask freaked me the hell out when I was a kid. Just the atmosphere alone was enough. That's why it's still my favorite Zelda game till this day, with A Link to the Past being a close second.
This game had a solid basis. Even though it's made of a lot of reused assets what it does with them is beautiful. Majoras mask is kind of like a romhack of oot. But a beautiful one at that. yet also a dark one yet it shows how humane it is with said darkness.
It takes OoT's narrative to a whole new level, imo. It doesn't feel like a romhack, it feels superior in many ways. OoT is still the "better" game for the most people, though, and that's totally fine.
@@zurkke nnot really i've seen what people are doing with oot in terms of romhacks now it's essentially one. it started out as ura zelda remember. but it is the better half of the story of oot.
Even the game title had a different color. It clearly wasnt about Zelda, but Majora sure did make the game about her instead. If you notice Majora is a foil to Zelda.
You know, there's an irony to this scene. When you help Romani fight off the aliens and save the cows, she wants to keep it a secret from Cremia to protect her so she doesn't worry. Now Cremia is the one protecting Romani from the end of the world, so she isn't worried about dying. This she accomplishes by getting her drunk off of Chateau Romani, so she'll sleep right through it. Imagine the awkward talk they must've had when the world didn't end.
I feel like there is little I can contribute to this discussion beyond what's already been said in the previous comments but I would like to note a small detail I've always liked about this game, and it's the simple fact that characters move about in their routines. What I mean is specifically the sequence of characters walking from place to place. In games that have a time component to them, it's often the case that say... if so-and-so has to be at some other place at 18:00, you may enter at 17:59, see them sitting there, then re-enter the room and find them to be gone. Now, not saying that this DOESN'T happen in Majora's Mask, but I vividly remember the characters actually walking about the town and Termina and whatnot... engaging in their daily routines right up until the end.
There are so many things In this game. Like the owner of the dojo who says he can stop the moon with his thumb [or something like that], but at the final day he Is enclosed In his dojo hidden In the backroom crying of fear to die D'; (uncertain If that specific >.>)
Link has to witness so much grief. And he has to know that he can't save everyone if the game's events play out organically. But even if he saves the world on the third day, that still means that can't get to everyone in one timeline. And he has to live with that knowledge.
As a child i never understand much of this game except that i have to beat the bosses and get to the moon before times runs out but when im playing this game again as an adult it felt alot different....deeper and....darker.....now i can see how developed those characters are....this game was incredible, the best to be honest. Yeah...she is right, sometimes things cant be changed no matter how hard you try...thats life....sometimes we all have to put up a mask for the sake of our beloved ones
I have played this game many times but have missed situations like this because I always followed the story line. I’m about to re-play it because of things like this years after it came out. This scene is so sad when you think about it.
God dude. This is probably the saddest thing I have seen in a video game… who knew a game in a usually light hearted series made for kids could manage to end up being one of, if not the darkest and saddest games of all time.
This game is not dark, this game is realistic (in interactions), this maybe the only game I know that makes you feel these emotions not only through story but through these subtle situations, you stand there watching, being an outsider both as a player and as Link. This is a media product made of pure emotions of its creators without being filtered or censored, nothing like this could never exist nowdays nor in that period.
You say that but people crucified Eminem for being raw, emotional, and also dorty but he pushed through it just like how Link pushed through the 3 days and killed Majora's Mask.
As an adult, this became much more heartbreaking for me. Cremia knows that she and Romani will die very soon, so she not only wants Romani to drink Chateau Romani to make her last moments happy, but also to get her drunk and dull any fear or pain from the heat blast once the moon hits Clock Town.
Wow! I started a re run of this game now in 2023 after playing this as a kid back on '01-'02. This scene hits so much harder as an adult with children. First time a video game made me choke up a bit. The pure innocence of Romani not knowing whats coming got to me.
Awww...so touching and heartwarming... Cremia is willing to sleep with Romani and comfort her, relieving her anxiety and preventing both of them from panicking despite what's going on, before everything goes black for them... for a little while, at least.
0:36 Honestly, It Is amazing how a Nintendo 64 videogame made this brillian Interaction. [You could even say It looks anime x] You can tell from Cremia's expression how sad It Is, and seeing how her little sister Is smiling so happily.... It's heart-breaking D;
I recently saw a poll about what was the darkest Zelda game, and Twilight Princess seemed to have won. Twilight Princess is more sad than dark in my opinion. Your childhood friend getting kidnapped by monsters and losing her memories, your companion sealing herself in her own world never to be seen again, and so on, more sad than dark. But this? The silence of the inevitable apocalypse broken only by the animals you recently saved only to die anyways in a few hours, as cremia talks to her little sister who doesn't understand what's happening, trying to dull her senses with "alcohol" as she tries to keep her distracted from their imminent death. This alone would be the darkest thing in TP but it's just barely scratching the surface of how dark MM is

It’s so sad that they all were ready to face death. Thankfully they had a brave little boy named Link stop the moon.
damn.....
I'd like to see Termina in a later game in the timeline and what will the legends be. Will they be of a green boy of many faces, of red giants, of a mask with evil intent, of a salesman with little time left...
Link: *plays the ocarina and teleports to another universe leaving everyone to die*
depends on if this is the cycle where link has everything set up *to* save everyone.
and if he chooses to do so. instead of... yknow.... resetting via the song of time over and over. which makes me wonder, does time rewind for everyone else or does the apocalypse happen anyway for that particular cycle you decide to leave behind?
the full ending heavily implies everything just gets smooshed into their ideal versions with everyone happy and having their personal troubles sorted out (which is funny because for many cases you can just skip and where the scene wouldve played will just show the mask tied to that scene floating in a void. yeah this is news to me)
This is one of the various reasons why Majora's Mask is considered the darkest Zelda. And one of the best too.
This hits almost as hard as 'We will greet the morning together."
Then when you get to Twilight Princess in the same timeline, it doesn't drop off the dark factor with what the Hero of Time has seemed to become, imo.
Even cartoony Zeldas can be dark in the undertones.
Apparently after this game this Link soon became depressed with all the memories he had and how nobody remembered him as a hero.
The hero of time is really sad
Oh damn I’m just reading this now and understanding that
I think its a combination of both
God I hope nintendo makes another game so unapologetically dark and hauntingly beautiful
It will never happen again, unfortunately.
She got the weight of the world and hours later, the moon joined too…
I love all the little details this game included if you look for them. I have seen games released in recent years that don't show all of these devotion to investing the player in their world. This game has so many heartbreaking moments as we see its characters reacting to their final day, until you come in.
And the game was developed in only one year. Crazy
@@GabMacedoo In some ways that worked in its favor since the short development cycle meant the developers had to get creative.
This scene, Kafei's and Anju's reunion, and the scene with Pamela and her dad were always soul crushing to me.
Also the deku butler always crushes my heart and soul
One of the most chilling pieces of dialogue in the game imo
Thanks so much for documenting interactions like these in the game, they're truly the best part of the experience.
0:42 I love how Romani is looking up at Cremia beaming. Not a care in the world.
Your profile makes the comment the most mesmerizing :'(
I discovered this scene a few months ago... it was heartbreaking :'(
Yeah she's not trying to scare her even though they will dieing a few hours
It’s scary just how dark this game truly is and so many people played through this game never picking up on these dark tragic hidden moments and stories.
this scene was a masterpiece
It only just now hit me that Epona’s stable is open on the third day because Cremia is letting her have a chance to run away to safety
STOP I’M GONNA CRY
Everything about this game is pure perfection. The insane attention to story, character attributes, and heavy implications is insane considering it only took a year to produce. MM remains my favorite game ever because of details like this.
It do be reminding me of hunter hunter sometimes
You would love Outer Wilds. (if you play it, DON'T look anything up!)
It's not until you get older that you realize what's REALLY happening here. Cremia isn't letting Romani try Chateau Romani for the sake of granting her final wish before they die. She's intoxicating Romani so that she doesn't die in fear.
The raw emotion in this game is ASTOUNDING.
I'd say that it was for both reasons. And so she would be with her when their times came.
The fact Cremia said “see you tomorrow” despite her and Link both being grown up enough to know what’s coming and lying to Romani breaks me. It’s out of love for her younger sister but that still cuts real deep.
Sometimes there is no happy ending.
BERSERK REFERENCE!
If you stop the moon after this, there is.
@@rareosts5752 yeah It's true.
I would argue saying "after how long, though?", but since you just go back In time, nothing has really happened around them xD
@@rareosts5752 not really, link just got a bad end anyways because nobody again knows that he saved the world again and there is a theory that says when link leaves termina this field dessapeared so its kinda sad
@@PapuTilin6 Personally not the biggest fan of the "It was all a dream" fan theory/trope. I don't think I'm alone on that. "Ash was in a coma" that sort of thing.
It's littered with narrative moments like this that don't have any specific rewards for finding them
Romani looks so cute as she looks up smiling at Cremia as they walk back to the house... I'm not crying...
Whenever I do a playthrough of Majora's Mask I'll always redo this quest just before I fight Majora so I can see them tomorrow for sure.
I actually have never realized this before. This game is amazing
to this day It still fascinates me that the most mature and emotionally heavy Zelda game of all time was one that was born out of 80% recycled assets from a previous game (ocarina of time), this is like making a main entry dish out of scraps, maybe that's why this game is my second favorite Zelda game of all time (first is twilight princess).
Just think of all the time they saved by reusing so many assets. All that went into writing and story design.
Damn the planet shaking as soon as they closed the door was so cinematic
I remember coming back to the ranch out of boredem near the end of the cycle and coming across the two sisters. It kind of hurt seeing the little sister so oblivious to the situation and her older sister keeping her in the dark. Her getting her drunk made it sting more.
Cremia letting her drink some before the world ends in hopes it protects her from feeling any of the pain
Its so freaking sad
As much as I've played this game, I didn't think of coming back here after getting the Romani's Mask.
This game certainly hits different as an adult...😢
See you tommorow...
I find it hard to believe that Romani didn't notice that huge piece of face decay in the sky. She's waiting for aliens to invade her farm. She knew.
Majora's Mask freaked me the hell out when I was a kid. Just the atmosphere alone was enough. That's why it's still my favorite Zelda game till this day, with A Link to the Past being a close second.
The earthquake right after they close the door makes it even more sad
this is one of the most chilling things ive ever seen in a game
Man... This game is like Ocarina of Time, things are different once you grow up...
Could be said for many things.
Link: *stoically* "Yes... See you tomorrow." *Goes to his duel with Majora* "See you tomorrow."
Shows how dark Majora's Mask really is.
Such a crazy, well developed game despite the fact the devs were only given one year to make it! It's always be a favorite.
I never saw these two walking together like this. They even look at each other.
Falling moon deniers be like: huh. Must be an asteroid.
Just like that, majoras mask just became a satire
This game perfectly utilized the time reseting aspect.
This is why Majora’s Mask is the darkest game in the entire franchise. The story telling is absolutely amazing.
The way Romani looks up at cremia as they’re walking 🥹 this is so sad
boy this is gonna be awkward if you decide to go up to stop the moon on this cycle.
"sis can i have some more chateu romani?"
Still one of the deepest stories in any game.
This game is a masterpiece
I never knew there was such a sad scene in this game.
There are so many things In this game.
Like the owner of the dojo who says he can stop the moon with his thumb [or something like that], but at the final day he Is enclosed In his dojo hidden In the backroom crying of fear to die D'; (uncertain If that specific >.>)
Warhammer 40K: *Tries to be dark and brooding*
Majora's Mask: "Cute."
WH40K is good in its own way tho.
@@ikagura Of course it is, and I never meant to imply otherwise. Everything has its own flair, and that's what makes them great in their own way.
The kids game where you bear witness to a lass giving her kid sister alcohol so she's less afraid of her imminent death. God I love Zelda games.
And people say Anju's Anguish is the saddest part about majoras mask.
Everything is sad about this
Link has to witness so much grief. And he has to know that he can't save everyone if the game's events play out organically. But even if he saves the world on the third day, that still means that can't get to everyone in one timeline. And he has to live with that knowledge.
I love the sister relationship between Romani and Cremia it feels so real
As bleak as it is, I absolutely love the thumbnail to this video 💝💝😍😍
Whenever people say Nintendo is for Babies just show them Majora's mask.. this game is deep and dark
Cremia and Romani: "See you tomorrow."
Me: [knowing it's the last day] "Yeah... see you tomorrow." 😔
The day after link beats majora: Romani:”can I have some more!”
Cremia realizing that the world has not ended: …
And that night, Link saved Termina.
And Cremia had to teach her little sister how to handle a hangover.
Majora's Mask was the first game that ever made me cry for the NPCs
I have played this game many times but have missed situations like this because I always followed the story line. I’m about to re-play it because of things like this years after it came out. This scene is so sad when you think about it.
Cremia was getting Romani drunk so she won’t feel her impending death when the moon hits…
Cremia knows there won't be a tomorrow, so she's hesitant
God dude. This is probably the saddest thing I have seen in a video game… who knew a game in a usually light hearted series made for kids could manage to end up being one of, if not the darkest and saddest games of all time.
17+ games are less mature
One of the most haunting scenes in gaming
This game is not dark, this game is realistic (in interactions), this maybe the only game I know that makes you feel these emotions not only through story but through these subtle situations, you stand there watching, being an outsider both as a player and as Link.
This is a media product made of pure emotions of its creators without being filtered or censored, nothing like this could never exist nowdays nor in that period.
It is realistic AND dark. Reality can be pretty dark
What's so crazy -- this was a rushed production. To this day, the director has _no idea_ how it became so popular.
@@Aurora-313 perhaps that contributed to the raw feelings it holds. It had less time to be tampered with.
When I pleaded this game when I was younger, I didn’t really understand what she meant. But now… Now I understand. And man, did that hit me hard.
i really did think the cow was talking until “come sleep with me on my bed” came up
Honestly I never saw this part when I did that quest
I can just picture Link looking at them with guilt and takes out his Ocarina.
"See you...tomorrow...OK?"
Link: No...but I'll give you that tomorrow anyways.
"You have never thanked me. I'll see you tomorrow, maybe!"
Awww...so touching and heartwarming... Cremia is willing to sleep with Romani and comfort her, relieving her anxiety and preventing both of them from panicking despite what's going on, before everything goes black for them... for a little while, at least.
That's heavy Doc!
Girls: “I can’t believe he didn’t cry at the Titanic.” “Do men even have feelings?”
Boys:
my God this game just keeps hitting with the secrets!
Literally just saw this line for the first time a few days ago. I finally got an original copy from a convention recently
0:36 Honestly, It Is amazing how a Nintendo 64 videogame made this brillian Interaction. [You could even say It looks anime x]
You can tell from Cremia's expression how sad It Is, and seeing how her little sister Is smiling so happily....
It's heart-breaking D;
