honestly i think the opposite of the "one bed" trope is more likely irl, both would choose the couch out of politeness and because no one minds sleeping on it but thinks others do, so may i present a new trope: there was only one couch and we're both sleeping on it though there is a bed because that would be "rude"
Amazing, but consider: trying to force the other person to stay in the bedroom, first with words and then physically, basically wrestling, and then barricading the door so they _will_ sleep on the bed, then going back in the living roo satisfied, only to find them laying smugly on the couch because they escaped from the window
and my favorite part of these videos is they acknowledge, platonic, familial and romantic dynamics at the same time. As an ace/aro girl who despises crammed in romance plots, I really appreciate it!
YES screw romantic sub-plots I want to see how they work together to overcome the dragon/infiltrate the lair/you get the idea, I'm here for the action not stuff that makes me feel icky
As an ace I agree, sure I think it's cute if a character blushes at each other but I don't want them to go all out and put their entire love in the plot, maybe give hints that they end up dating or they already were dating but you can't force it into the plot
Why the heck didn't I REALIZE AVATAR IS A CHOSEN ONE STORY?!?!?! Whoaaaa!!!! I guess that just goes to show that if it's good you won't realize the trope at all!
Revoltionary Girl Utena too deals with this trope. What it means to be the important person. Even shows the perspective of side characters who will never be special.
Hard to do when so many women get activly angry at you if they tell you to "leave them alone" or " dont touch me" and then you do as they ask. (women in relationships mind you, not a girl you try to pick up)
Tbh, there's nothing more romantic and sexy than respecting boundaries. That's the good shit and is also pretty much bare minimum. Boundaries exist for a reason and should always be respected, in fiction and in real life.
“disgruntled chosen ones” describes too many of my characters. I just really love the whole “you have been gifted with unparalleled magical proves!” “oh god no” it’s like “with great power comes great responsibility”, except they don’t even want the power in the first place
“Long-suffering wizardling and their off-the-wall eccentric wizard master” wins by a long shot in my book, and immediately reminds me of those Dumbledore comics ProZD dubbed
Right?! It feels like an art teacher, where they know all the rules so they know when its okay to break them, but the wizardling still has to learn all the fundamentals and is constantly vexxed by their master being so blasé about this supposedly *very important stuff*
On the sleeping on couch one, sometimes it's not about being raised without sleeping on a couch, sometimes it just doesn't matter to either of them to share a bed, I've shared a bed with a friend of mine multiple times, it's not solely a romantic thing, it's just sleeping, you won't even see most of the time there
exactly! when a good friend of mine is over, she will sleep in my bed too. like... it's way more comfy than my couch?? why would I banish her like that? Unless she wanted to sleep on the couch?
I love "everything goes wrong on a wedding day" when it's followed by "Characters realize that a big celebration doesn't matter as long as they have each other, and have a peaceful quiet wedding just the two of them + their closest friend group"
Late for the party, but... everything goes wrong, but the wedding party doesn't let thecouple know, so they're being cheesy and getting ready while their friends run and bend backwards untill the only tip that something is off is the flowers on thecake being suspiciously similar to the ones onthe bridemaids' bouquets
My favourite type of ending: Things are terrible. The characters are hurt and things suck and the world is such a terrible place. They’ve been through such pain, but there’s a little bit of hope in sight. There is a long way to go, and recovery is going to take such a long time, but they have each other. They’re together, and that has to mean something. There’s some hope left. They have each other. It’s just that bittersweet feeling, y’know? Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to cry in a corner :’)
The ending of my novel: Main character dies. His allies and him have managed to kill pretty much all the enemies, and the people who were bad are now gone. The problem is most of the good people are gone, too. Without getting too deep into it, the good sort of becomes the bad at times after that intentionally. They begin sacrificing themselves to begin a new world order. This is because the main character sacrifices himself around the topic I’ve built up: monsters can be perfect creatures to each other only under a couple circumstances; there are no humans to corrupt them; there are no unique magics to create unpredictable powers that disturb power dynamics; there are no extremely powerful people with normal magic alone. The only outlier after the “Perfect World Initiative” put forward by The Evening Star is the last one. The smart people unite the world against them by pretending power has corrupted them. The powerful eradicate the few villains left since their ringleaders are gone. The world can go to a state of near perfection. Monsters can work together and create a world where people cooperate. The cost? Half a continent was destroyed, over a hundred million have been slaughtered, a civil war has been started that will kill over thirty million more before concluding, the main religion of the world has been destroyed, the royal family is gone tossing people into anarchy until perfection is achieved, a country of eighty million monsters are left in chaos after their king and all the heirs to the throne are dead, and more. I say a perfect world, but millions will die over the course of centuries until then. It’s supposed to be bittersweet because it’s not a perfect world. Not for a long time, not until the people who fought for it are long gone. Then all they wonder as they die is “what did I fight for?”
I wish this was the ending we got instead for that _one game ship that almost was but drowned itself._ I wish those to just went to _that place of romance._ Or if not, I wish those two met again, and lived together. Even if nothing romantic happened. They only had each other, after all. Or maybe they both meet in an afterlife of sorts. Same ocean, same shore.
The enemies to lovers but evil is cool but WEAK. Enemies to lovers but they’re both evil and all the dates are them being beaten up by the good guys! Yet they don’t care, they just be chillin’ like a villain. Also Hero X Villain will always be my favourite pairing. I know it’s a stereotypical “they hate eachother but they actually love eachother”, but nothing is better than two dorks with powers flirty fighting in costume and snuggling out of costume.
Jessie: Prepare for trouble! James: Make it double! Jessie: To protect the world from devastation! James: To unite all peoples within our nation! Jessie: To denounce the evils of truth and love! James: To extend our reach to the stars above! Jessie: Jessie! James: James! Jessie: Team Rocket blasts off at the speed of light! James: Surrender now or prepare to fight! Meowth: Meowth! That's right!
absolutely, i dont like being touched especially if its unexpected but sometimes people seem to think me saying "dont touch me" actually means "i currently dont want to be touched, but feel free to touch me out of nowhere again a few hours later"
@@nutelllla_ This! Or when a friend or whoever takes offense that you won’t let them hug you, and worse starts getting pushy about it. What the hell do they expect; you’ll begin to enjoy hugs with surprise, unwanted contact, yeesh.

One trope that needs to be common is Old People romance, heck Elderly couples in general. ESPECIALLY if the couple spent more than 20 years together. It's adorable on its own in real life, so why is it so rare in fiction? Makes me bawl my eyes out everytime.
Because I like to imagine the couple has a long, happy life together in front of them still, not expect one of them to die 3 months after the story ends which the other one never gets over and then can't even adopt a pet to fill the emptiness because they are too scared of dying of old age too before the pet does ;(
An elderly couple that popped up in my mind is Jo (aka Josephine) and Emmie from the series Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan. They've been with each other for decades and their family dynamic with their adoptive daughter Georgia is just so adorable. Their love story is really cute too, I won't go too much into it but let's just say they gave something up just to be with each other for the rest of their lives. Like I said, adorable.
Honestly, no romantic trope will ever beat "I didnt fall in love. I walked into love, choosing every step of the way". Thats just too good. Also, "long suffering wizardling and their off the wall excéntric wizard" is literally Michael and Howl, in both the book and the movie.
Even tho it's a k-pop ff, I read one and like 1 was loud guy (forgot his major) & the other one was the quiet guy with bio major and it starts like they live together and have established relationship, the jock opens the fridge and drinks the thing is cup only to spit it and it turns out that his bf was growing some type of microbacteria 😂
I LOVE when their differences don’t detract from their relationship or cause too many “conflict plots” but actually make the relationship compatible in weird ways u never would have guessed
@@eccentric_creampuff4983 "Conflict plots" only exist to lengthen a show's already lengthy runtime. Thankfully, they're not as common in real life. But mini versions still happen from time to time.
fun fact: peanut oil usually doesn't cause that severe of a reaction in those who are allergic to peanuts! you usually react to the proteins, and not other parts of the allergen. :)
I personally love relationship dynamics that aren't the norm. My favorite is smol chubby man who is shy but a hopeless romantic and very gentle and giant woman that is built like a wall who is confident but really awkward and clumsy with romance and also needs to learn how to deal with their strength to not give someone a crushing but loving hug.The only straight relationship i accept. Edit or the classic male wife and girl boss ♥️💅
I love "more than mind control;" where characters use supernatural forms of coercion or compulsion on people, but the victim's choices are still their own. Maybe the controller twists fate to shape someone's circumstances and choices, maybe they amplify the victim's existing impulses and desires towards desired ends, maybe they magically learn what psychological pressure to apply and persuade the victim, maybe they tailor garden variety hypnosis/brainwashing to exploit existing vulnerabilities or address specific hangups, the possibilities are endless. Don't get me wrong, I like straight mind-control too, but I think "more than mind control" is much more nuanced and diverse, and opens up a lot more windows to explore characters, plot, and themes.
In the Mistborn books two of the powers are called Soothing and Rioting. These let your decrease or increase someone's feelings in a given situation. It's not mind control, but it can be used to get people to do what you want, if you pair it with careful words and actions on your own end
2:39 I think it's because those writers subconsciously think that happiness can't actually be achieved, and so they never let it be achieved. Those writers are probably just _accidentally_ projecting. Don't we all? In conclusion: Every writer needs a hug.
In one of my stories, everything that went down happened at the wedding and the wedding got ruined but I did that deliberately. And, this is a spoiler lol, but they did have the actual wedding once the main plot was fully over because I believe in happy endings and I can't for my life write angst without a happy ending.
as a writer, I don’t need a hug - I need to stop being numb to actual, deep emotion, so that I can understand my characters and their emotional responses to things better 😔
Regarding the post at minute 6:00, I've seen the "get angry then sad" trope too many times. What I want to see is "get angry, and never calm down." Like they get so angry they reck their house so much, but as they look at everything, they're not done, they then venture outside to beat some trees or pick a fight. The situation they are put in is so anger inducing they need a lot too calm down
Okay, but what if the 'time travelling to meet your past self' trope, except future you is actually evil, & they're going back in time to corrupt their past self So basically, it's 'time travelling to be a bad influence on your past self' Even better, the future self is uncorrupted(?) by their past self being that pure & sweet
The whole "I can levitate building so I was made to be in a wheelchair to nerf me" thing bothered me so much I wrote a story with all kinds of fantastical thing like dragons, elves, spell casting, ghosts, vampires, and more. Made one character disabled- unable to walk for 80% of the story and the back story of that is just "I fell off a cliff, Deborah, I don't know what to tell you, spinal damage just be like that." and there's nothing any more or any lesser about their capacity to do the magicy things than anybody else in story. They lost use of their legs, not the use of their sass. (The other 20% their legs still don't work, but ghost summoning shenanigans makes it seem to everyone else as a flex in case anyone was wondering.)
See, lemme be honest here. As a writer, my most favourite trope? Rivals to lovers. Character A is a smarty pants, top of his ranks, the best of the best. Character B? Character B is an intelligent introvert that seems arrogant but is just a dumabss who's socially akward. Character A thinks that character B is just an asshat, but as A fights with B they notice how character B fights with emotions and speaks with their blade. Character A falls for Character B at the first ass kicking
Along with including shorter guys can we also include taller girls that aren’t single girl bosses? Maybe they can be the main character? Or maybe even dress and act really cutesy instead of elegant or sporty
2:44 Adding onto this, make more horror media where it looks like it'll end very gruesomely and horribly, but instead it has a wholesome twist at the end! We need more fluff in our lives. (nothing wrong with liking angst, though)
The Evil Within 2 was kind of like that. Less in a last-minute twist way and more a rejection and inversion of the usual Silent Hill 2 esque "character realizes that they did something terrible and is dragged down by the weight of their sins" arc. The main character starts out drowning their sorrows over past trauma and blaming himself for past losses, and through the course of the story confronts and triumphs over those demons, recognizes that none of it was actually his fault, and by the end happily drives off into the sunrise with his not-dead-after-all daughter in tow.
Trope I cannot get over: strong guy gives bad news to girl. Girl gets angry/sad and bests her fists against him, calling him all sorts of names. Guy stands there and takes it because he knows she's not really mad at him, just their circumstances. And then she realizes it too and that he's always been there for her through the tough times and knows he'll continue to be there. Then she hugs him, burying her head in his chest sobbing and he hugs her back. *chef's kiss*
About the 'one bed trope' take: If you have a crush on someone you're not close to and sleeping together would be awkward or could be crossing a boundary, completely agreed. If you have a crush on a close friend or similar, the one bed trope 100% works because you're comfortable enough with the person you'd rather sleep with them instead of on the couch. Point in case: I've had sleepovers at my place and there was only one bed trope ensued, and two of my friends (who were super close friends) had to sleep together. Today, they're dating and going strong in a very loving relationship.
4:30 the post about “who else but you” opened some old damn wounds. In high school I dated the person I’d been close friends with for about a decade. She had such a strong influence on me (and in hindsight, I her). It lasted for 16 months. It wasn’t ever going to work for a lot of reasons, and we had changed (in her case for the worse, frankly) over the years, but when she left I was so terribly distraught. Every once in a while I am telling an old story, and she inevitably comes up, and I get a little sad. She and I were really intertwined. Or at least she was intertwined with my life (she was very emotionally closed off). But now she’s gone. Not just in the sense we don’t talk anymore, but the person I was friends with is gone. She died a long time ago, and the woman around now is very different.
Finally I find a comment about that part! It hit so hard and I really love those stories. I’m sorry for how you lost someone so important to you, I hope you make a new connection that reaches that level again
personally one of my favourite character tropes is 'stoic and done with the world's shit but secretly massive softies'. Also 'ball of sunshine that's very internally fucked up'
I like the permutation of the "one bed" trope where one person offers to sleep on the couch and the other says it's fine for both of them to sleep in the bed.
@@scarletrosekat9444 Thats a pretty offensive question actualy. And people usualy use it when they dont wanna adress your arguments so they try to dismiss them. And my point its pretty valid. Just look at the majority of the relationships and how many times the woman was taller, with more money and social status, and higher education than the guy she is with. Its ok, girls like what they like.
@@alexforce9 It's really not that deep nor accurate. Teen girls might often have a thing for tall guys just in a social sense, but I've realised from watching my friends' lovelives that, although one may have a type, it doesn't really always end up being people who fall into those standards that you fall for. You like your guys tall with black hair and green eyes? Might crush on a blonde guy who's slightly shorter than you. Interested in rich, mature, older men? You might fall for your friend who only lives in the moment and jokes about you being old It genuinely just depends on chance and bonds, even if there are people out there who just go "Ew, I'd never date *that* guy!! It may not be noticeable irl, but it says he's only 5'9 in his bio!!!!". That's just called being immature imo
here are some of the ones i absolutely adore (some of these are highly specific and long so bare with me lol): - stoic, washed up veterans developing a parental bond with their assgined rookies. be it within a military setting or a good old buddy-cop dynamic. - two antagonistic rivals warming up to each other and bonding over some shared experience/trauma. eventually they help each other grow and become better versions of themselves all the while keeping the now good-natured rivalry going. - a character chooses to do their job/follow protocol over their closest friend/partner. something that really eats them up and they regret it. the friend however, totally validates their choice and even respects it, doesnt understand why they keep insisting they made the wrong choice, this miscommunication complicates things further for both. - the whole "leaving your current life to go look for someone you got seperated from" trope gets me all the time. • could be someone orphaned at a young age going back to the place they grew up in to look for their lost sibling after being adopted by different people. when they find them, they realize just how different they are from each other but they both still put in the effort to reconnect. • could be two bffs who grew up together, got seperated by circumstance of life. one has a very complicated past so the other worries about them when they havent been in touch for a while. they learn from someone that they're in very hot waters/tangled in some deep shit and decide to leave everything behind (a peaceful life, a loving s.o, a good paying job, family...etc) and go look for them/help them out because they promised it's always gonna be them together vs the world. - future king/high ranking official whos also leader of an uprising declares his defiance against current corrupt king/government. they're like "how dare you!/arrest him/off with his head...etc" and they make a move on him but then his right hand man swiftly steps infront of him and draws his weapon/sword like "you gonna have to go through me first". bonus points if the right hand man is also another important figure/instrumental to the bad king/gov and is secretly working with the leader, effectively stunning the antagonists by making it clear where his loyalties truely lie. - a married couple who are forced apart by unforseen shitty circumstances beyond their control, which puts a strain on their relationship and thdy become estranged. when they get to see each other again and spend some time together they realize they never stopped loving each other which affirms their desire to make things work, beat the odds and get back together. bonus points if one of them tries to move on and live their lives while estranged, thinking their spouse did the same thing, they stop wearing their ring..etc, only to realize when they meet again that their spouse never took the ring off, and couldnt move on from them and be with someone else... etc
Omg please give me some recommendations based on these or of the “abandoning everything to help your childhood friend” at least! I’d really appreciate it 😁
About the short guys thing here’s a concept; rogue thief bad boy type who’s small and skinny because he HAS to be to be good at his job but is just as competent as the tall warrior type.
My main character in my story is ace/aro. This is only revealed after the romance subplot ends in her love interest getting rejected because of it. In fact, all of my main cast is LGBT in some way (except for the token cishet), but that barely affects the story. They just are that way.
Interesting book I read once included a gay protagonist but the book was barely about it at all. The main issue was that he was fused with a 4th dimensional being and has a good chance of dying during the process of getting un-fused. He has a crush on a boy but it’s a normal crush that isn’t any different from a hetero crush. The book is called Felix Yz. Not sure exactly what the reading level is but it’s a pretty easy read.
Honestly, I tried it so many times already, but I find it genuinely hard to write a gay love story that isn't at least partially ABOUT being gay. Like, I'll set out with the specific goal to make a normal, everyday thing and then halfway through realize, woops, all the big story beats and fantastical plot elements were all just a big metaphor for being afraid of coming out or something like that xD I guess I struggled with it too much myself irl to let my characters just have a regular gay romance without encountering additional problems 😅 That book sounds fun though :)
@@sleepysera I actually have two queer relationships in my story (wlw and mlm) but the whole theme of my story is about relationships in general, platonic and romantic, and how both can make or break a person. If I'm being honest, when I first thought of this theme after realizing all the different types of relationships I wanted to include in my story, I felt like I was the smartest person in the world for a moment lol
Since nobody mentioned this, i will. What's your opinion on the trope where an interdenominational being/not human thing gets forced to watch friends and get addicted to the show, so they binge it (normally offscreen) and they make references to friends and the other characters respond with "you've been binge watching friends haven't you?" or something similar like that.
To that person who loves characters that can’t cook, but insist they can: play persona 4, it has three of those characters and the guys are deathly terrified every time they want to cook anything at all
1:43 Best explanation for this: > The one confessing is very sheltered, > has a 'friend' that gave them the wrong impression of friendship, > never had real friends before, > had been emotionally neglected, > and therefore has no idea about normal social interactions, social clues, etc. "I fell in love with you, but I thought that's what friends just normally do. Even though I have other friends now, I never realized that I was a lot more affectionate with you... You're not just a friend to me anymore."
Look. I just thought of an awesome difference from the “ you chose your path and I chose mine ”, I love it when people can manage to write stories more like “ you chose your path and I tried to follow your path, but you left me behind so I left you behind “. I just love it. It works so well with the characters for a silly little story about silly little traumatized kids who have to learn how to deal with the fact that NONE, and I mean it, NONE of their parents are any good
*I love this* I really want to use these tropes! I created characters just to use them. Bitter chosens you say? Got em, so tired of the world pushing them to solve the problems leaving the Mc no chance to deal with own health, mental, emotional or physically, and just tired, not angry, or disappointed, their to tired to feel that, their don't care, so they just walk to fix the problem to find the anti, whose standing their with a frown, like they never meant for this to happen, truly, they never did, the MC looked dare they compared, lifeless, like lifeless soul, or a ghost death couldn't find, though Mc now understood, understood what Anti was fighting for, why they understood each other better then the others who worked with them, they were two halves of a whole, they were the same, except, Anti moved on before they lost, Mc did not. and now, now it's Anti to fill the part of the chosen, the role they ran from before, forcing it onto another, and they'll fill it, letting Mc rest, rest in a peaceful sleep, they may have been on different sides but they had limits, and Anti knew that, Mc would sleep, while Anti had a new reason to continue their fight. _I how does one have motivation to write a story but when I want to I lose it?_
One of my favourite tropes is "Villain defeats Hero/Hero defeats Villain once and for all but ends up feeling empty and without purpose." My goto example for this has and always will be the Lego Batman Movie
2:00 Yeah but have you ever considered: “Back then, I fell in love with you without even realizing it it, before I even knew, but now, after all this time I am choosing to love you because you are such a bewitching person. Even if the world is against us, through all the troubles, I’ll still fight for a way to choose to love you” Thanks for coming to my Ted talk
“been through some shit 40 year old adopts young and naive kid” okay, but consider, the opposite: “been through some shit teenager is taken in by a kind parent who is trying to help them open up and give them a good life” bonus points if the parent adopts multiple “been through some shit” teenagers who help each other cope like “yeah, i’ve been there too” double bonus points for two parents because we don't see enough wholesome older couples in media and damn it i need the fluff
"washed up 40 something and their unwilling adopted child who they would die for" _furiously nods and starts crying while holding several stacks of Dadzawa fanfiction_
Compromise: a off the wall wacky master who knows all the rules and thus can safely bend/break them that has to rein themselves in so as to provide a structured learning environment to their ditzy/over eager apprentice who is enamored with the cool rule breaking magic but has to buckle down and learn to stop screwing up the fundamentals.
"I don't like love triangles or chosen ones" Me, (currently watching "Hamlet: Drama or Vengeance" (1921)): Yes. I also don't like love triangles. Or chosen ones. At all. Especially not a chosen one struggling with what they were chosen to do while working through the most bisexual love triangle since Twelfth Night. (goes back to watching)
2:00 i personally love a combination of the two tropes!! like i adore characters accidentally falling in love or growing close with each other but also eventually consciously making an effort to be a good friend, and if theres romantic stuff involved, eventually a good partner
Single villain parent whose only child wants to be a hero. The villain helps the child reach their goal and cheers them on. They have a great relationship. Villain kills anyone who hurts their child and the hero will go after their parent’s rival villain organizations. Also will never go after their parent at any cost. They have wonderful family gatherings too.
Oh oh oh!!! Additionally: When their parent is killed/sent to jail by one of their hero colleagues, they throw EVERYTHING they’ve worked for away. They just go fucking rogue and upturn the entire city to avenge their parent.
Bonus points if the villain was done in in an unnecessarily cruel or humiliating way by an immature hero, and that’s half the reason the child is angry
Examples of the first one: Tony Stark + Peter Parker Clint Barton (Hawkeye) + Kate Bishop Gru + Agnes, Edith, and Margo (I’ll make edits if y’all keep adding on)
Homura+ her familiars (the ones who look like little girls, forgot their name but I think they're called Lottes??? correct me if I'm wrong.) Madoka Magica.
@@taytaythehufflepuff8532 Madoka Magica. Not sure if it's canon but Homura+ those little girl familiars bc I need to see a fanfic where Homura basically just chills with her familiars.
10:20 "The social reject who accepts themselves and doesn't become a popular extrovert at the end of the book." Yes! I once read a book (I do not remember the title) where the main character was not very social (and had interests that may be considered "strange" ), and it seemed like the message the book was trying to say was that she should change and become like everyone else to become a popular extrovert. And also "It's okay to have "strange" interests, but only a few of them". As someone who is not a popular extrovert, it made the book hard to read.
8:06 Personally, I don't care for liars. Don't love 'em, don't hate 'em; not unless they're designed to be one way or the other. But I love it when a character bends and stretches the truth, withholds information and leaves others to fill in the blanks (the wrong way), etc. It just feels so much more... creative.
Sometimes I want to see a chosen one character who is super bitter about it, getting horribly depressed. They don't fulfill their destiny, instead they seek joy in choosing the destiny of others. They become this powerful being just toying with the world for some empty fulfillment. Nothing, no one, matters to them, and they love it. Edit: To make things interesting maybe their power over the destinies of others get taken away, maybe they break down for it and possibly become a little more insane. Or they accept it with an amused smile, they knew this was going to happen, now they get to watch another soul go through the same process.
0:54 pretty much half of my male main characters are shorter than 6'... a lot of my ̶p̶u̶n̶c̶h̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶b̶a̶g̶s̶ main characters are 5'2" - 5'6" and it's sometimes used as a gag, but not that often. sometimes it's on purpose (like that one character that's ftm, or that one character who's growth was stunted by a childhood illness), and other times it's just because i want there to be a height difference in the relationships or i just love it when the tough masculine character is just short (like me).
Also, it is so true that any LGBTQ+ character in books must have a 'I'm different' conflict. Can people instead just write about how their relationships with others change, maybe how they fall in love (BECAUSE LOVE IS LOVE), or maybe how they ACCEPT themselves, or MAYBE how other people on their life help them through their journey as a PERSON, not a 'LGBTQ+ person'?
@person person Same, I don't like ships, I'm fine with romance, but like, I don't want to deal with a ship that just might be toxic. Basically, just "ships" in general.
Okay, one of my FAVORITE oddly specific tropes is awkward, slightly eccentric tall person/energetic short person which is why I'm writing a book about two characters exactly like that :D
6:43 I’ve always loved this trope, but when the crush actually *wants* to share the bed with the other just because they’re comfortable with them enough??? That’s a “diamond in the rough” quality show/movie right there
My favorite trope is: " X character is never listened, respected, never treated like the others are, and then, after so many time of being treated like shit, X gets tired of it and just goes full villain evil cruel mode and becomes a threat, even a bigger threat than some of the actual villains of the series. And now that he is a giant threat to everything, the main team starts to see how X character its of big value to the team, and then either X character comes back with everyone threat him well but he is changed because of the villain experiences he had, or he stays as a villain because he absolutelly loves the fear, the freedom and the respect he gains from it
0:33 I don't prefer that trope over to the other one and for only one reason. If you didn't want someone to hug you and they did, that would make the hugger a bad person. I get that it's in response to people not liking hugs, gets hugged and magically likes hugs because of it. But if the writer was aware enough that getting hugged when you say no is bad, someone who respects that isn't magically good, they're just not a dick and the moment ain't that meaninful. But a lifetime of someone never being hugged, doesn't make everyone around them dicks, especially if the only reason they're not hugging when the person secretly wants hugs but everyone else assumes they don't so they don't do it, making them good people, just isn't enticing. "Let characters be sincerely happy you cowards" no I project my own trauma and sadness onto them, like seriously the only OC's I have without trauma is just 1 hispanic christian girl... Actually she has deep rooted self esteem issues but we don't talk about that.
Honestly your probably right if your always sad, don’t even like being around yourself who’s going to want to be around you? I’d suggest joining a club putting yourself out there but uh good look internet dudester
Let me put one in here: The "sarcastic bastard guy with a heart of gold" trope is BAD. GIVE ME THE MOST UNAPOLOGETICALLY SWEET AND WHOLESOME GUY WHO WILL ASK ME IF I WANNA BE HIS FRIEND LIKE WE'RE 8 YEARS OLD AGAIN. I WILL fall in love with him the moment i see him, and he won't oppose to it in the slightest because he genuinely loves making new friends. HOW ABOUT THAT.
Considering the following: “Character that appears to be sweet and wholesome, but in reality, they hate everyone and have an angsty side to them. They only open up to one other character about this, while everyone else thinks they’re an innocent bean.”
Bad guy's henchman defying them at the final hour and turning the superweapon on them. Can be an astronaut sobbing out "I'm coming home!" As he crashes the space station into the evil empire, or other suicide attacks.
6:35 I see this and I raise you: one initially takes the couch but neither of them can sleep so the one in the bed eventually, “reluctantly” offers the other half of the bed.
hero x villain will ALWAYS be my favourite pairing omg it's like "I HATE YOU! no i actually love you im sorry im sorry waaaaaaaaaaaahhh-" AND THEN THEY CUDDLE WHEN THEYRE NOT FIGHTING AND OUT OF SIGHTS TO EVERYONE ELSE AND AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA +bonus points if after being the "villain" and being the "hero" they just return to their house and the hero's like "hey can you ask your minions to stop trampling all over my lawn" and the villain says back "lol yeah sure"
6:23 my favorite variant of this is when they offer to sleep on the couch and the other person is like "the bed is big enough for us to share" and it's not that they *can't* sleep on the couch, but that there's a comfort and trust between them already, and they intend to both sleep somewhere equally comfortable. Bonus if the character who gave them one bed intended for one person to sleep on the couch, or even gave them a couch that pulls out into a bed but forgot to show them how to do it, and comes to wake them up in the morning.
One of my favorite silly tropes is when the characters are in a tense or potentially dangerous situation and saying their goodbyes, and then one is like, "I've been lying this whole time: I don't actually have a PhD in botany! I'm sorry!" or something tobthat affect. It's just so wholesome!
I have watched every one of your videos bc your voice is just so damn nice to listen to, like, idk why but your voice is just very calming and genuinely nice to relax to. Good job keep goin’!
speaking on "families going on fantasy adventures" and "bitter chosen ones." so this has given me an idea. a family is going on a fantasy adventure together. they're unsure of their goal at first, until it's revealed that a member of the family, character A, is the chosen one to defeat some sort of evil. and character B, whether they're a parent or cousin or sibling of character A, is incredibly envious. thinking, "out of everyone in the family, character A is the only one who's special? what about the rest of us? are we just useless? do we mean nothing to them anymore?" and then along the journey, the familial relationship between A and B dissolves into a sort of rivalry, while the other family members have no choice but to watch it happen.
Alternatively, the Chosen One and their mom/dad/other guardian who is having _none_ of that prophecy and refuses to let their kid defeat the Big Bad alone.
@@SolarSeaSlug This. This is why almost every fantasy character in existence is missing one or both parents. No parent in their right mind is going to let their kid go save the world unless said kid has a lot of experience in adventuring already.

8:51 my absolute favourite character from Undead Unluck is this, the “lying to the good guys” flavour (read it or watch it please. The fandom is so small and it makes me so sad )
I don't know what it's called but when a character takes care of another character who is injured or sick but who they don't like and during that period realises that they aren't that bad and it ends up being the start of romantic feelings. Like in Beauty and the Beast where Belle starts liking the beast after he gets injured but there is still a long way to go before she loves him. I LOVE that trope. A lot
I just love when 2 characters have been friends for a long time and one get feeling for the other but the twist is the other likes someone else but insted of makeing it a love triangle, the friend respects and lets them be bc they know that would make their crush the happiest

honestly i think the opposite of the "one bed" trope is more likely irl, both would choose the couch out of politeness and because no one minds sleeping on it but thinks others do, so may i present a new trope: there was only one couch and we're both sleeping on it though there is a bed because that would be "rude"
Please PLEASE write a book with that in it
Bonus points if it evolves into a full fledged battle over who is the most polite
Amazing, but consider: trying to force the other person to stay in the bedroom, first with words and then physically, basically wrestling, and then barricading the door so they _will_ sleep on the bed, then going back in the living roo satisfied, only to find them laying smugly on the couch because they escaped from the window

My favourite type of ending:
Things are terrible.
But then one of them dies and the rest just break down into each other's arms
Sounds like the ending of The Hunger Games.
The ending of my novel:
Main character dies.

One trope that needs to be common is Old People romance, heck Elderly couples in general. ESPECIALLY if the couple spent more than 20 years together. It's adorable on its own in real life, so why is it so rare in fiction?
Makes me bawl my eyes out everytime.
Because I like to imagine the couple has a long, happy life together in front of them still, not expect one of them to die 3 months after the story ends which the other one never gets over and then can't even adopt a pet to fill the emptiness because they are too scared of dying of old age too before the pet does ;(
Eda and Raineeee…
exactly what i thought
An elderly couple that popped up in my mind is Jo (aka Josephine) and Emmie from the series Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan. They've been with each other for decades and their family dynamic with their adoptive daughter Georgia is just so adorable. Their love story is really cute too, I won't go too much into it but let's just say they gave something up just to be with each other for the rest of their lives. Like I said, adorable.
Crowley & Azi, when things gets better
Honestly, no romantic trope will ever beat "I didnt fall in love. I walked into love, choosing every step of the way". Thats just too good.
Also, "long suffering wizardling and their off the wall excéntric wizard" is literally Michael and Howl, in both the book and the movie.
I like it when there's a couple that's completely in love, but they have completely opposite personalities
This trope happens a lot in real life.
It's beautiful, but at first kinda suprising and confusing to look at.

[cough cough] Prince Lyon [cough cough]
In the Mistborn books two of the powers are called Soothing and Rioting. These let your decrease or increase someone's feelings in a given situation. It's not mind control, but it can be used to get people to do what you want, if you pair it with careful words and actions on your own end

And, this is a spoiler lol, but they did have the actual wedding once the main plot was fully over because I believe in happy endings and I can't for my life write angst without a happy ending.

Adding onto this, make more horror media where it looks like it'll end very gruesomely and horribly, but instead it has a wholesome twist at the end!
Just Beyond has some episodes that are like this.

About the 'one bed trope' take:
If you have a crush on someone you're not close to and sleeping together would be awkward or could be crossing a boundary, completely agreed.

That 6ft guy thing is so true. Like why yall want someone that tall? You can’t do the damn forehead touch easily 😭

@@alexforce9 It's really not that deep nor accurate.
Well DAMN did you just describe my first original character to a t
That's like half of my Fire Emblem ships
sounds like what would happen if you mixed luke skywalker and han solo
the last post was so well articulated, that's exactly what i've thought for a while but all i get out is : writing was meh :/
My main character in my story is ace/aro. This is only revealed after the romance subplot ends in her love interest getting rejected because of it. In fact, all of my main cast is LGBT in some way (except for the token cishet), but that barely affects the story. They just are that way.
yoooo, im aroace!! i rarely see any stories with aroace characters in them!! when youre done, id love to read your story, if youd let me
THE TOKEN CISHET XD
My main character is also an ace. She does get in a romantic relationship but it's all cute and wholesome.
Imagine having cishet OCs

Interesting book I read once included a gay protagonist but the book was barely about it at all. The main issue was that he was fused with a 4th dimensional being and has a good chance of dying during the process of getting un-fused. He has a crush on a boy but it’s a normal crush that isn’t any different from a hetero crush. The book is called Felix Yz. Not sure exactly what the reading level is but it’s a pretty easy read.
sounds like fun.
Honestly, I tried it so many times already, but I find it genuinely hard to write a gay love story that isn't at least partially ABOUT being gay. Like, I'll set out with the specific goal to make a normal, everyday thing and then halfway through realize, woops, all the big story beats and fantastical plot elements were all just a big metaphor for being afraid of coming out or something like that xD I guess I struggled with it too much myself irl to let my characters just have a regular gay romance without encountering additional problems 😅
That book sounds fun though :)
@@sleepysera
I’m sure you’ll get there some day with practice. I think it’s great that you are writing things like that!
The short guys one YES god I love short guy/tall girl dynamic so much! Wish it was used more in popular media

To that person who loves characters that can’t cook, but insist they can: play persona 4, it has three of those characters and the guys are deathly terrified every time they want to cook anything at all
I too thought about those girls and mystery food X. Only Nanako's "chocolate" is worth dying for.
1:43 Best explanation for this:
> The one confessing is very sheltered,
> has a 'friend' that gave them the wrong impression of friendship,
> never had real friends before,
> had been emotionally neglected,
> and therefore has no idea about normal social interactions, social clues, etc.
"I fell in love with you, but I thought that's what friends just normally do. Even though I have other friends now, I never realized that I was a lot more affectionate with you...
You're not just a friend to me anymore."
Are you perhaps talking about Adrien?
@@SimpleRainbow-g2n The last bit is indeed Fanon Adrien.
Don't worry, canon Adrien is going to that direction slowly but surely.
Look. I just thought of an awesome difference from the “ you chose your path and I chose mine ”, I love it when people can manage to write stories more like “ you chose your path and I tried to follow your path, but you left me behind so I left you behind “. I just love it. It works so well with the characters for a silly little story about silly little traumatized kids who have to learn how to deal with the fact that NONE, and I mean it, NONE of their parents are any good
*I love this*
I really want to use these tropes!
These readings of Tumblr writing posts are oddly calming
One of my favourite tropes is "Villain defeats Hero/Hero defeats Villain once and for all but ends up feeling empty and without purpose." My goto example for this has and always will be the Lego Batman Movie
2:00
Yeah but have you ever considered:
“Back then, I fell in love with you without even realizing it it, before I even knew, but now, after all this time I am choosing to love you because you are such a bewitching person. Even if the world is against us, through all the troubles, I’ll still fight for a way to choose to love you”
Thanks for coming to my Ted talk
“been through some shit 40 year old adopts young and naive kid”
okay, but consider, the opposite:
“been through some shit teenager is taken in by a kind parent who is trying to help them open up and give them a good life”
bonus points if the parent adopts multiple “been through some shit” teenagers who help each other cope like “yeah, i’ve been there too”
double bonus points for two parents because we don't see enough wholesome older couples in media and damn it i need the fluff
"washed up 40 something and their unwilling adopted child who they would die for"
_furiously nods and starts crying while holding several stacks of Dadzawa fanfiction_
felt that on a personal level
Me but with Papashi fanfics.
"I don't like love triangles or chosen ones"
Me, (currently watching "Hamlet: Drama or Vengeance" (1921)): Yes. I also don't like love triangles. Or chosen ones. At all. Especially not a chosen one struggling with what they were chosen to do while working through the most bisexual love triangle since Twelfth Night. (goes back to watching)
AHAHAHAHA NOOOO☠️☠️☠️
2:00 i personally love a combination of the two tropes!! like i adore characters accidentally falling in love or growing close with each other but also eventually consciously making an effort to be a good friend, and if theres romantic stuff involved, eventually a good partner
Single villain parent whose only child wants to be a hero. The villain helps the child reach their goal and cheers them on. They have a great relationship. Villain kills anyone who hurts their child and the hero will go after their parent’s rival villain organizations. Also will never go after their parent at any cost. They have wonderful family gatherings too.
Oh oh oh!!! Additionally:
When their parent is killed/sent to jail by one of their hero colleagues, they throw EVERYTHING they’ve worked for away. They just go fucking rogue and upturn the entire city to avenge their parent.
Bonus points if the villain was done in in an unnecessarily cruel or humiliating way by an immature hero, and that’s half the reason the child is angry
9:28 I love that they included Katya's "mountain biking vampire witch from the future" as an example of a self insert oc. Iconic.
Examples of the first one:
Tony Stark + Peter Parker
Clint Barton (Hawkeye) + Kate Bishop
Gru + Agnes, Edith, and Margo
(I’ll make edits if y’all keep adding on)
Homura+ her familiars (the ones who look like little girls, forgot their name but I think they're called Lottes??? correct me if I'm wrong.) Madoka Magica.

@person person I do love some dragonxhuman ships 😏
@person person yes, even better, I actually hate the dragonxhuman ships 😔✊
@person person Same, I don't like ships, I'm fine with romance, but like, I don't want to deal with a ship that just might be toxic. Basically, just "ships" in general.
@person person Coward >:)
OP said love is love, didn't they? Dragons deserve love too!
1:18 "Don't cry, you're perfect"
Okay, one of my FAVORITE oddly specific tropes is awkward, slightly eccentric tall person/energetic short person
which is why I'm writing a book about two characters exactly like that :D
6:43 I’ve always loved this trope, but when the crush actually *wants* to share the bed with the other just because they’re comfortable with them enough??? That’s a “diamond in the rough” quality show/movie right there
My favorite trope is: " X character is never listened, respected, never treated like the others are, and then, after so many time of being treated like shit, X gets tired of it and just goes full villain evil cruel mode and becomes a threat, even a bigger threat than some of the actual villains of the series. And now that he is a giant threat to everything, the main team starts to see how X character its of big value to the team, and then either X character comes back with everyone threat him well but he is changed because of the villain experiences he had, or he stays as a villain because he absolutelly loves the fear, the freedom and the respect he gains from it
I came here to fuel my writing motivation but instead my heart burst.
But when the person who secretly does want a hug gets hugged for whatever reason, chef's kiss.
4:21 LITERALLY Rupert and Amir from The Two Princes
It's my favorite podcast (only podcast I listen to) and it's almost like it's a show

Yo I feel ya.
Let me put one in here:
The "sarcastic bastard guy with a heart of gold" trope is BAD.
(why yes, i *have* been obsessing over Hatty Hattington from Battleblock Theater. How did you know?)
Considering the following: “Character that appears to be sweet and wholesome, but in reality, they hate everyone and have an angsty side to them. They only open up to one other character about this, while everyone else thinks they’re an innocent bean.”
@@sushirainbow7937 That sounds really interesting, but i feel like I'd end up absolutely hating them. I'm not a fan of angsty characters. lol
I love that trope, personnally, ever since Jayfeather from Warrior Cats.
Bad guy's henchman defying them at the final hour and turning the superweapon on them. Can be an astronaut sobbing out "I'm coming home!" As he crashes the space station into the evil empire, or other suicide attacks.
6:35 I see this and I raise you: one initially takes the couch but neither of them can sleep so the one in the bed eventually, “reluctantly” offers the other half of the bed.
hero x villain will ALWAYS be my favourite pairing omg it's like "I HATE YOU! no i actually love you im sorry im sorry waaaaaaaaaaaahhh-" AND THEN THEY CUDDLE WHEN THEYRE NOT FIGHTING AND OUT OF SIGHTS TO EVERYONE ELSE AND AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
+bonus points if after being the "villain" and being the "hero" they just return to their house and the hero's like "hey can you ask your minions to stop trampling all over my lawn" and the villain says back "lol yeah sure"
+bonus points if villain is like very scary but when hero gives them a compliment they’re like “shshkjsjhskhshdjsnaja u make me blush shut up”
6:23 my favorite variant of this is when they offer to sleep on the couch and the other person is like "the bed is big enough for us to share" and it's not that they *can't* sleep on the couch, but that there's a comfort and trust between them already, and they intend to both sleep somewhere equally comfortable.
Bonus if the character who gave them one bed intended for one person to sleep on the couch, or even gave them a couch that pulls out into a bed but forgot to show them how to do it, and comes to wake them up in the morning.
Since I actually *love* Twizzly Gummy Cookie, I would love to see stories about chaos and war with a lead character who craves violence and blood.
Gosh, "wow, it's beautiful" "yeah... beautiful" makes me go FERAL every single time.
I completely agree with the last one. I love amnesia tropes, but 99% of the time it's done horribly or doesn't reach it's full potential
OMG TY pixiielix ( 1:43 ) THAT'S EXACTLY IT, FORGET "I fell without realising it" WHEN "I choose to love & yearn for you" IS SO MUCH BETTER 😩❤️
*4:07* That's literally just Steven Universe, Steven Universe: The Movie and Steven Universe Future literally *ALL THREE OF THEM*
One of my favorite silly tropes is when the characters are in a tense or potentially dangerous situation and saying their goodbyes, and then one is like, "I've been lying this whole time: I don't actually have a PhD in botany! I'm sorry!" or something tobthat affect. It's just so wholesome!
I have watched every one of your videos bc your voice is just so damn nice to listen to, like, idk why but your voice is just very calming and genuinely nice to relax to. Good job keep goin’!
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoy them :)
That's why I love the last of us so much. It's the perfect "stoic 40-50's smt guy having to take care of a restless smart orphan kid" trope.
speaking on "families going on fantasy adventures" and "bitter chosen ones."
so
this has given me an idea.
a family is going on a fantasy adventure together. they're unsure of their goal at first, until it's revealed that a member of the family, character A, is the chosen one to defeat some sort of evil. and character B, whether they're a parent or cousin or sibling of character A, is incredibly envious. thinking, "out of everyone in the family, character A is the only one who's special? what about the rest of us? are we just useless? do we mean nothing to them anymore?"
and then along the journey, the familial relationship between A and B dissolves into a sort of rivalry, while the other family members have no choice but to watch it happen.
2:38 It's a tough one, but I'd have to go with "long-suffering wizarding and they're off-the-wall eccentric wizard master" because it reminds me of my art teacher from high school.
A trope I like is when there are 2 characters who are basically the same person being shipped together
some of these posts hit straight into my pride and prejudice lovin' heart and I don't mind it. like Darcy choose Elizabeth and vice versa when they could have chosen someone else.

A lot
Florence Nightingale Effect, I believe. But in this trope they aren't required to hate each other.
