    One watches this ( _the original Conan_ ) and then they watch that *atrocity of a remake* with _Jason Momoa_ and just want to swing an axe at their tv set! Couldnt watch beyond the first 12 mins of that crap!

      @@badinski_1195 My own opinion on this is that there’s no direct representation of Egyptian culture in this film but there is an overarching reconstruction of the ancient world that touches on Egypt in certain ways. But to me there’s little that would be ascribed to Egypt that couldn’t be more readily ascribed to ancient Sumer, Mesopotamia, Hattusa etc…With that said, I think the Egypt angle is an interesting one and could lead to some interesting observations.

    I was so fortunate to be a kid to see all the Star Wars, Conan the Barbarian, Indiana Jones, Dragonslayer, Halloween and Alien on their opening days at the theater. Conan and Dragonslayer remain to this day two of the greatest fantasy movies ever made. Only problem is there were about 150 garbage fantasy movies made behind them that ruined quality fantasy movies, and fear of making them for years to come.

    This is by far the best of the Conan movies. Better obviously than the second film and much better than the film that came out a couple of years ago. The first Conan film does take from some elements of the books. The others don't...not at all. The music is what makes the film imo. It's perfect for the genere. It isn't perfect, however. It doesn't put the book Conan in the correct light. If one wants to do a great Conan movie, they must take from the books directly. Having read all of them many times, there is a huge variety of stories to tell.

After watching this, I don't think there can be any doubt as to Stone's respect for the source material, or how well Milius grasped Howard's themes and higher artistic points.

      I LOVED him more than I loved _Conan_ - ( _well....ok not more per se, but you get the gist of it_ ) ; One of my favorite lines in the film was when he had ensnared Conan in that pit, where he was just summoning those _virgins_ to leap to their deaths at the wave of his hand - and then he just looks at Conan with that intensity and says : " *What is STEEL compared to the HAND that wields it?* "
      I tell ya, I contemplated that on the tree of woe !
      It was such a profound statement and _true_ if one contemplates it. BEST movie of all time.

    In the trailer we are believe to think it is a b-movie with a barbarian trying to rescue a princess or killing the bad guy. Although it is true, it is the least important plot in the movie. There is, as we know now, a much deeper telling story. It is just one of the best films ever made.
    Though the sequel really suck, why? Because there isn't a deep meaningful story behind it. It is just a b-movie trying to rescue a princess and killing the bad guy, that's all.

    They should really revisit Oliver Stone's original conception of Conan if they ever decide to bring back then character to the screen again. I don't count the last horrible attempt at it with Jason Mamoa. He could have been a great Conan, but the story and screenplay behind that one was weak and just horrible. If they did it right, and got the right screenplay to take the story and characters seriously like they did in 1982, it could have really worked.

    Sgt Rock!
    "But at the start of the 90s, it could have been Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis uniting, when the trio were (almost) all at the height of their box office powers. The project was the comic book adaptation of Sgt Rock, being packaged by uber-producer Joel Silver, and there was real consideration given to bringing the three together in the one project. Schwarzenegger was attached, but we suspect it was the budget that ultimately kyboshed the idea.
    Sgt Rock is, however, still in development, and recently was linked to Bruce Willis. Guy Ritchie had been mooted as a director, but he went off to do Sherlock Holmes instead." too bad!

    And Conan never said "goddammit" either, that wasn't an oath in Howard's post-Atlantean Europe - Jeez, people, I don't care if you wish you write an original tale, someone else did, and you can only spoil it by changing it - go read the original tales, the first 7 or 8 volumes

    I must have to point out that what they say about Howard's paranoia towards his town and the way which he wrote Conan is flat out bullshit. He was not a Texan cookoo freaking out in the night, but hard working man with a talent and passion for history, archaeology, myths and fables, upon which he drawn on to create Hyboria and Conan.

    Not respecting the source material, I believe, is one of the main reasons many of these comic-to-film adaptations don't work.

    • @the.first.starfighter
      @the.first.starfighter  10 років тому +12

      Maybe, but it is kinda fact that in 1982 the mass of moviegoers formed long lines that spanned streets, causing traffic jams.
      Can modern movies make something like that?

    • @zulubro
      @zulubro 10 років тому +2

      Alex Turchin Of course they can. And do. All the time. As evidence, look at the success of films like "Avatar", "Titanic", "Avengers". Franchises like "Harry Potter", "Batman", and "The Hunger Games". These films tend to get made people who are enthusiastic about telling the story. Also, respect for the source material has led to the phenomenal success of films like "The Lord of the Rings" and television series like "Game of Thrones".

      I think they don't want to risk showing things that might cause an uproar, I don't know. Conan's world is more violent than in the movie, tons of tavern wenches and prostitutes, back-alley thugs....but hell, it's also more realistic and much richer!
      Today, in a fight, they would try to portray him as a total badass instead of a raw, quasi-animalistic cimmerian warrior. Also they would try to imprint modern day ideals and behaviour, which conan doesn't have, of course.
      ah...by Crom, I'm ranting again. I would totallly support a Conan TV show, like game of thrones(nice budget, nice actors, accurate portrayal of living conditions...)

      I thought this one was fairly good for a film interpretation of conan. Did they get it perfect? No but it was watchable. Everything in this genre after this one sucked balls though.

    • @MajorKreissack88
      @MajorKreissack88 10 років тому

      pdxeddie1111 it's what happens when something is successful, tons of copycats follow trying to "eat" what's left.
      I don't think Arnold made a great interpretation of Conan(not saying it was entirely his fault though, can't think of a better actor in that time for this but script does count too)...it's just that Conan world is so much more, this felt like a single-issue comic story, left me feeling like they left so many things out that would have made it better
