I just want to say THANKS to my Uncle Don for turning me on to CONAN....and for gifting me his whole Conan Comic book Collection several years back!!!....Long Live KING CONAN!!!
Roy Thomas was the man when I was a kid reading comics. I was reading back issues of Savage Sword of Conan that Roy wrote and at the same time reading Arak Son of Thunder that he was writing at DC. For the window of years that I read comics as a kid, he had Stan Lee and Jack Kirby levels of influence.
Agreed. Alcala had amazing detail, and Buscema's own ink work is amazing, but I feel Chan captured the grit and feel of the Hyborian world best inking over Buscema.
It's so good to see Roy here!!! Roy and John made the best run on Conan EVER, so much that I think Roy should be in charge of a ' last' Conan story, just for the pure hell of it!
So it was Roy that phased out the thought balloons in comics. I had read that using thought balloons was old-hat, not used any more. Now I have learned why I had to order the Conan novels from England in the 70’s!
I'm a huge fan of the weird fiction and pulp tales of the 20's and 30's so it's no surprise that I'm a fan of both Lovecraft and Robert E. howard's seminal works from the period. That said, Marvel's Conan comics of the 70'a and 80's are an absolute pleasure especially if you're already familiar with Howard's original Conan pulp stories.
ROY CON WINSOR SMITH UN CONAN JOVEN INPULSIVO CON GANAS DE APRENDER ,SOBREVIVIR Y CONOCER EL MUNDO. CON BUSCEMA MAS MADURO Y CAUTELOSO ODIANDO SIEMPRE LA MAGIA. PODIA RELACIONAR HECHOS ENTRE LAS DISTINTAS PUBLICACIONES DE CONAN (ESPADA SALVAJE,CONAN EL BARBARO,CONAN REY ,ETC).
2020 Still begging Roy Thomas to finish where Howard left off after of the isles. He's the last authority as far as I'm concerned, and no one likes Decamp, and I still dont know why!!!
DeCamp simply didn't understand the character of Conan at all. He would instead write stories that happened to feature a barbarian that was simply named Conan.
Komixmaster Sorry is this off the last Conan movie DVD? From the special features section? I'm actually working on a book/story with Roy right now. Thanks for posting this video.
Hugo Danner Great! Yeh ... This is the DVD CONAN, EL DESTRUCTOR: EDICION ESPECIAL ... Special Features: Legends comics. www.dvdgo.com/dvd-conan-el-destructor-edicion-especial/1272275
This is fascinating. It's ironic that THE Conan authority, Roy Thomas, co-wrote what became the worst realization of Conan on film. I blame the director, who also made the execrable Red Sonja, and Dino DiLaurentiis who also produced Flash Gordon, among other films of questionable taste.
I think Mamoa played an Alright Young Conan, but I thnk a better role for him would be as Conan's son CONN. With Arnold as an old aged Conan on the Throne. I just want that one seen where Conan Rises from his Throne to Defend it with Conn at his side!
Barry Windsor-Smith's work in Savage Sword surpassed Big John's stuff but his is still the iconic Conan. I'd place John's Conan above even Frazetta. Erinie and Sal followed John's style so he really did set the standard.
The ones I have are Dark Horse's modern Conan series (which do adapt Robert E. Howards stories) I'm no sure where one can find a Savage Sword reprint in color.
I have a major problem with the Conan series! The works are absolute masterpieces but it is so hard to figure out how to find the Conan Comic you are looking for there is just not enough differentiation and organization.
It is true ... The series has gone through many writers and artists ... In addition to the original classic series, I love Conan by Bill Sienkiewicz ...
Yras I love how Darkhorse is going...soon the Belit question will come in because it should be like savaze sword made to movie. The current actors look nothing like Buschema/Chan's Conan (the best)....conan broke the neck of a bull on his 16th bday...
Can you tell me which books I may get Conan stories in full color? I got the 4 first volumes of Savage Sword of Conan by Dark Horse in B&W, which it is awesome, but I'd like to get some reprint of those early 80's comics by Marvel. ANy word would help. thanks
Which Conan comic has all the gore that the original stories by Robert E Howard had in them? Some Conan stories are pretty soft in the comics and have left out the descriptions and depictions of the bone crunching savagery that the originals had, from what I hear from people who have started reading one of the comics but was turned off because of that reason and put it down. I would like to read the gory stuff, anybody know what the titles are if they exist?
Anything written by the people at marvel isn't going to be bloody from that era. The comics code kept it pretty clamped down. The closest thing you're going to get it is savage sword of Conan or the very newest stuff which isn't really all that bad. There are much more gory comics out there now, crossed for example.
They really couldn't be that bloody. Don't forget they still were under the self censorship of the comics code authority. Its surprising they were able to get away with so much on the regular Conan the Barbarian comic. They had more flexibility with Savage Sword of Conan as that was considered a magazine format and could avoid the comics code BS.
I just couldn't enjoy either of the Conan movies, because I read the Howard stories. The comic books were also better IMO. Robert E. Howard is the only source that I enjoy.
@phaedruslive To be fair as a Conan Fan I'm happy with all three, but story wise I wish they would adapt one of Howard's stories instead of making up their own stories
I just want to say THANKS to my Uncle Don for turning me on to CONAN....and for gifting me his whole Conan Comic book Collection several years back!!!....Long Live KING CONAN!!!
Buscema was the master, period!
Barry smiths work was amazing
Buscema and chan the greatest duo.
Buscema was best inking his own pencils. Too bad he didn’t have time to do it often enough.
Agreed. Alcala had amazing detail, and Buscema's own ink work is amazing, but I feel Chan captured the grit and feel of the Hyborian world best inking over Buscema.
Roy was IMO the best writer of Conan in comic book form ever.
boagsale Roy was the only one who had a vision for it.
He WAS the best
It's so good to see Roy here!!! Roy and John made the best run on Conan EVER, so much that I think Roy should be in charge of a ' last' Conan story, just for the pure hell of it!
Savage sword of conan is still a great read. Roy Thomas was the perfect person to adapt howards stories.
Best comic ever made
Queen of the black coast saga. Is the best
thank you for posting this hard to find gem.i grew up on the Thomas/Buscema comics and they have brought much joy by crom!!!
darkempire37 Let's raise a tankard of ale to rascally Roy and big John.
Conan is truly my favorite.
So it was Roy that phased out the thought balloons in comics. I had read that using thought balloons was old-hat, not used any more. Now I have learned why I had to order the Conan novels from England in the 70’s!
Roy Thomas is a legend
Really interesting history from Roy Thomas who always is enjoyable to listen to.
I'm a huge fan of the weird fiction and pulp tales of the 20's and 30's so it's no surprise that I'm a fan of both Lovecraft and Robert E. howard's seminal works from the period. CCCRRRROOMMM!!!
Roy Thomas ROCKS!
I loved his all star squadron comic
Thank you for posting this ! Roy Thomas was a great influence on me and his prose helped shape my vocabulary .
I love Conan, Jonh buscema, Ernie Chan, Roy Thomas.

Conan is one of his many awesome works.
thank you for posting this hard to find gem!!! i have wanted to see this for years.
Of course there's the music. That must be one of the greatest themes of all time.
I LOVE CONAN!!!! I have all the books by Howard. I have all the comic books and after years of lifting weights I'm built alot like Conan.
Very nice interview.
The volume is just perfect.
thank you for posting this rare gem
2020
Still begging Roy Thomas to finish where Howard left off after of the isles.

You also greats Mr Roy Thomas.
Actually I think Savage Sword was published as a B&W comic, the colored ones are Conan the Barbarian
snakes3425 Yes.
Could you please turn up the volume more. Thank you
Sorry, Hugo... So came the video on the original DVD.
ThX for comment...!
Komixmaster Oh well thanks! Thanks for posting this!
Hugo Danner... It has been a great pleasure to share.
Thank you very much, Hugo...!

CONAN = THE BEST
This is fascinating. It's ironic that THE Conan authority, Roy Thomas, co-wrote what became the worst realization of Conan on film. I blame the director, who also made the execrable Red Sonja, and Dino DiLaurentiis who also produced Flash Gordon, among other films of questionable taste.

great artist...
Someone needs to acknowledge the music that plays every time anyone even mentions Conan or is it Frazetta, or Howard?
Barry Windsor-Smith's work in Savage Sword surpassed Big John's stuff but his is still the iconic Conan. I'd place John's Conan above even Frazetta. Erinie and Sal followed John's style so he really did set the standard.
fred kelly Thank you for mentioning BWS. Looking forward to the omnibus's collecting his gorgeous artwork. Hope you are to.
REH Conan stands above all other 20th century characters, from Buck Rogers, Tarzan, .. he stands above
second one was okay, i mean it cant suck its fukkin conan
The omnibus all out in 2019 great 👍 that’s a buy for me 😊😊😊
I thought the second Conan film was better than the first one. The second one was closer in style to the Marvel comics.
No wonder the second Conan 2 reminds me of a Savage Sword story.

You taught me a new word (pastiche)!
Conan was the first marvel or mcu movie
Yras I love how Darkhorse is going...soon the Belit question will come in because it should be like savaze sword made to movie. The current actors look nothing like Buschema/Chan's Conan (the best)....conan broke the neck of a bull on his 16th bday...

Komixmaster is there a way to re-upload it with higher volume? ´cause it´s too low to hear anything

Hollywood seems to be having a hell of a time trying to make a good live-action Conan movie. Maybe they should try an animated version.
CONAN prays for MILIUS to direct him on 2015
I just couldn't enjoy either of the Conan movies, because I read the Howard stories.
The comic books were also better IMO.
Robert E. Howard is the only source that I enjoy.
@phaedruslive
To be fair as a Conan Fan I'm happy with all three, but story wise I wish they would adapt one of Howard's stories instead of making up their own stories
Is that from a pastiche? I would rather they stuck to Howards stories. I think a TV series of Conan would work nicely. Like Spartacus.
🌠🐉 🌃🏔️🌬️💕 Great ⚔️🛡️
@conan0869 I hope you dont honestly think mamoas version is any better.
The first movie was so great in many different ways. The second one was very weak.
Awhh. L. Sprague de Camp? Never say that name with Conan stories, he ruined them!
Samuel But he helped keep it alive.
Volume is terrible
Conan the barbarian top movie , destroyer wasn't the best nothing compared The first.
