The Sprawl I was the only one when I watched who caught that on the lipread (because I'd been thinking the same thing), so I gave a lonely laugh and then didn't laugh when the rest of the audience did... felt a bit weird, but in a good way. :-)
kattahj Me too, although I only realised I'd been thinking of the scene from LOTR when he said it out loud. It was an unconscious association in everyone's mind, which is why the joke worked so well I think.
Rachel House nailed her part in this. My partner's occupation involves working alongside child protection services agents, and she says that Rachel's satirical portrayal of real - life people in that role is spot on.
I expected great things from Hunt for the Wilderpeople, considering it was Taika Waititi, it had Sam Neill and it was kiwi. I lived in New Zealand for 4 years and the country and it shaped me. Moved as a teen. I loved Boy, liked What We Do in the Shadows and Wilderpeople is a great progression for Taika Waititi. I hope he gets the chance to make Thor: Ragnarok as best he can, without having to anchor the film too heavily to future entries. It's stifling. Great film. and another great underrated comedy drama starring Sam Neill is 'The Dish'' (2000), it's funny, and charming as. Or endearing, whatever sounds better.
Saw this at the EIFF. One of my favourite films of the year! Having lived in NZ for a while it felt like a bit of a nostalgia trip with some of the references and use of slang.
Well it warmed my cold little heart to hear Kermode give some affection for Kings of Summer. It was like receiving a long awaited approval from a distant father.
I LOVED What We Do in the Shadows. First time I saw it, or indeed heard of it, was on a flight from Los Angeles to Brisbane. I've never had to try so hard to stifle laughter.
I absolutely love the back and forth between these two. When I first started watching this channel, I kept thinking that Mayo should pull that stick out of his butt, what an idiot I was.
I was reminded of The Adventures of Yellow Dog - the pace, atmosphere and some of the themes are very similar. I also liked the reference to McCabe And Mrs. Miller - Cohen and snow trudging.. I really enjoyed it!
"do you remember that film big game? "ohh yeah" "so, forget that, because its not like that" "wh-why did you- what?" lmao when that happened twice it made me laugh so hard
Loved this! Saw it earlier this evening. Hadn't seen the trailer, only read a synopsis of it in my local cinema's program last week & thought it looked quite good. One of my favourites of the year, if not number 1. Sometimes a tone of a film can be so perfectly married with the story and characters that it is almost indescribably good; It was basically everything: funny, sweet, kind of sad but also joyous, exciting...... just a wonderful film. Also, Sam Neil is absolutely fantastic. :)
With the success of the Thor movie he directed, there's a fear that Taika might end up doing action blockbusters. I really hope he's able to continue his career as more of an auteur.
Did not read the Barry Crimp book but he was also a very funny man in the kiwi vernacular. Remember one story he told about running out of Jeys disinfectant to get rid of the flies in the long drop dunny so used petrol instead. Only problem was that Barry smoked. In the toilet no less. The hair eventually grew back but the outhouse had to be rebuilt. Loved the film but the continuity was terrible.
I love New Zealand and ausie films and tv series. They have such heart. I so sick of American shoot everybody films. America needs more access to their film industry.
"Woah, he's giving that pig a piggy-back." I somehow love the delivery of that line :D
If you liked that, then I recommend you do see the movie - that is only the beginning of such lines. It's great. :-)
A majestical film
"Guess what's behind the other door? Anyone wanna take a guess?"
" ... vegetables?"
"...... n-no no not vege... no ... what?"
That had me laughing out loud 😂😂😂
"Niuo!"
"I was trying to tell you it was like Lord Of The Rings!". Genius.

The funny thing is I thought of LOTR straight away even before he mouthed it!
Just watched this again for the first time in three years whilst in Covid lockdown and it’s even better then I remember.
Rachel House nailed her part in this. My partner's occupation involves working alongside child protection services agents, and she says that Rachel's satirical portrayal of real - life people in that role is spot on.
Probably my favorite film of the year
4 years years later, can i just say, taika waititi s one of the BEST comedic directors of our time.
Anyone else noticed the Edgar Wright like editing?
meu02136
He does that?
Admittedly I'm not as familiar with Aranofsky as I should be but it doesn't really seem to fit the tone of his movies.
meu02136
I'm specifically talking about 1:24 meaning pretty energetic editing of something that just isn't exiting.
I feel like this film kinda utilises a blend of Edgar Wright and Wes Anderson’s styles, while making a whole new, unique style in the process

LOVED this movie. Glorious script fantastically delivered.
I knew this film would be great literally less than 5 seconds into the trailer. Funny how you can just get a good vibe like that.
I know exactly what you mean! When I saw the trailer for it on Film 4 I waited a week to see it and it was worth every minute of the wait!
Love this film! Even has a small cameo from Rhys Darby 👍🌟👍🌟👍
...great film, best line "I´m the Terminator, you´re Sarah Conner but before she could do chin ups!"
"he's tricky like that, Jesus"

I saw it at a meet the cast and crew screening when it first came out in NZ, one of my favourite films ever! So funny!
This is an absolute modern classic
My absolute favourite film of all time from the moment I left the cinema! Glad to see the Kermode-ster liked it.
3:30 If only the camera man got the subtle message...
"do you remember that film big game?
"ohh yeah"
"so, forget that, because its not like that"
"wh-why did you- what?"
lmao when that happened twice it made me laugh so hard
Really enjoyed this film. Charming and simple.
Vision express will make at least £268 from this video at least
I've been waiting for this movie since January (from the sundance reviews).
The movie is like UP, but without the balloons.
My favourite film of the year so far, loved it.
Mark Kermode seems very unfocused at times.
Where are my Kermode glasses?
Maybe he suffers the same condition as Robin Williams in Deconstructing Harry.

Odd is the operative word, and I loved it.
Remember being high with a mate and put it on, having no clue what it will be about. Can't remember the last time I laughed so much. Genius movie
I liked What we do in the Shadows, clip looks good, got a good laugh out of it, and a very positive review from Mark Kermode.
Is it my phone or the bloke in the studio doesn't know how to work a focus?
Watched this on Netflix last night. Brilliant.
Shame about the semi-spoiler from Kermode here.
Yes, a bloody great movie!
Got this for my sis for Xmas. Lovely, sweet, funny; walks the line between ridiculous and moving very well.
Another great movie from New Zealand! Don't think I've seen a bad one yet!
Loved this film
Wilderpeople and not Wilderpeople...that just took me on moon as someone tried to discuss on that.
"..lukewarm about 'What We Do in the Shadows'..." Come-on man, that one was fantastic. You pompous ass.
is it just me or if your from NZ what they think is odd or"out of wack" is what its actually like in the country/bush here??

Dunny
I love New Zealand and ausie films and tv series. They have such heart. I so sick of American shoot everybody films. America needs more access to their film industry.
This is the funniest film I have seen in years
I loved this
IT WAS
looks like a live action version of Up.
Paul Stargasm Nothing like it.
11th doctor confirmed
He's a real bad apple
The BBC are using potatoes as cameras now?
awesome movie
Funnily enough, I loved What We Do in the Shadows, but was lukewarm about Hunt for The Wilderpeople.
UP
Kermode hated Jojo rabbit, what a shame
bbbblllluuuurrrrryyyyy
No.
Seriously Mark has to have some of the dullest movie reviews, which basically consists of him naming similar movies like the one he is reviewing.
