Over here in New Zealand, this movie is huge. Like, the movie came out March, and it's still being played heavaly in theatres. Not to mention DVD and Blu-Ray sales.
Completely agree with Madwolf! I trust Chris' reviews and have never been disappointed from the ones he has recommended. Never would've looked twice at Hush - turned out to be one of the best watches, for me personally this year.
As a New Zealander this film was just amazeballs to watch. I'm glad the rest of the world has had the privilege of seeing it. Plus for me there is a whole other level of comedy because so many of the pop culture references resonate so much more than with the international audience.
This is one of the most interesting reviews I have seen in a while. I am a New Zealander and really enjoyed the Wilderpeople but curious to see how a film that has a heavy Kiwi influence with plenty of in-jokes and references. I felt like others might not get our brand of comedy (particularly with the hunting scenes) and certainly wouldn't relate to parts.
Man I love how they just embraced that this was an NZ movie, so many references and jokes, but they didn't go overboard. Also Ricky reminds me of a New York run away kid. Thinking he's some sort of gangster and New Zealand is some sort of South Korea, every man for himself survive. When really we're just a happy and green country and I love Ricky seeing the truth through out the movie.
I´m Colombian and i can confirm that the movie was hilarious. Maybe i didn´t get the in-jokes but the dialogue, situations and characters were a blast.
This is one of the main things that separates Stuckmann from Jahns to me, Chris does reviews of lesser films, maybe as he has more time or interest in these types whereas I get the impression Jeremy has more events to go to & does all the big named films, like them both btw so no hate
Stuckmann gets more into the technical aspects of a movie whereas Jahn gives more fun and casual preview; which is funny, because their clothing styles is the opposite: Jahn dresses like he is going to a formal event (with the exception of the Star Wars previews), and Stuckmann sticks with T-shirt most of the time.
My wife went and saw it three times in the cinema without me. And now it's no longer in cinemas in Australia and I have to wait for the DVD. I'm so heartbroken
Make sure you type the website correctly. There's a lot of other websites that try to copy the legit website so you can sign up with a credit card first before watching anything and it's not real.
There is definitely a coincidental resemblance of the movie. But I think its better simply on a relational level with the characters ... but this could be because I'm from New Zealand
I've watched this movie 4 times and never got tired of it...the young dude julian aka ricky baker was so good of a character and well done....sam neil, well, he's one of the best kiwi actors, i first saw him in the omen movies, 'Damien the final conflict' many years ago, and have been a fan ever since.
This is why I love Stuckmann. He reviews lesser films, animes, and anything he likes or finds endearing to him. It gives his channel a lot more diversity.
Get a small business loan, contact distribution companies, open up an indie movie theater. Definitely sounds like there's a market for it in your town.
I just had a great experience viewing this today in a packed theater full of elderly people. I don't think I've ever seen a more respectful and invested audience.
Chris I've been watching your channel since you reviewed your highness back in 2011 and I wanted to say your passion and love for movies is amazing to see. I'm a film buff my self and to see someone so ethusastic and be so passionate about film is amazing to see. Your film reviews are so in depth and always entertaining to watch keep up the good work
This film is so amazing. I absolutely love it. Brilliantly written, acted and directed. The soundtrack is absolutely brilliant. The child service woman was incredible, loved seeing her in Thor ragnarok. The thing I love about this film is how human the characters are and the tragicomedy genre. It’s strange how a film can make you laugh and cry at the same time and this film just does it all so brilliantly
Chris I'm finally taking a film studies class for fun, and of the many we're watching and discussing, this is the main film for the class and the subject of our term papers. I've been so excited to see it since you made this review, and your channel is the main reason I'm taking initiative to further my passion for film and its making and study. Keep doing what you do so well!
Damn. I don't know about you guys but to me, in these past two reviews it seems like the Stuckmann can review practically anything and I'd still be invested.
Hey Chris, greetings from New Zealand, love the channel! It's great to see a small Kiwi film making such an impact on people all over the world - thanks for the positive review!
Just watched it finally and and I looooooved it! Very human, funny, well written, acted and directed. It's a feel good movie that don't seem to be done that often and that well theses days. Plus, I lived in New Zealand(I'm Canadian) for a while and while I'm planing to move there again and indefinitely at some point, this movie gave me some big nostalgic chills. Such a great and beautiful country :)
I went to an Art Theatre that shows independent films, and before I saw Finding Dory there, they had a "Turn Off Your Cellphone" ad before the trailers, with the 2 main characters from this movie, that was pretty hilarious.
I'm so happy you've reviewed a kiwi film! the directors name is Taika Waititi and his first name is pronounced tie ka by the way, I noticed you didn't say it in the video.
I saw this in NZ when I went to go see my friend in Wellington, and it rocked my socks off. It's INCREDIBLE! And CHIRS, you didn't pick up on the director/writer's cameo as the priest!
+Chris Stuckmann - I just saw this film 5 days ago. I loved it even more after I had a chance to reflect on it. Great performances, and wonderful cinematography. I can only imagine how beautiful a place New Zealand must be. Also, some of the attention to details and the eccentricities of the characters (such as The Bush Man)reminded of Wes Anderson's films. As you said, we need to support films like this, to have more of them made. If we don't support them, they may become as extinct as the dodo bird. I feel the same way about SING STREET (only $3 million in US box office). I wish you would also review that film. Please !!!
Even higher on this than you are, I'd give it an A/A+ and think it's one of the best comedies of the modern era. Certainly streets ahead of things like 'What We Do in the Shadows'. I think the last time I was this impressed with a comedy was 'The Guard'. Nice review and I'm glad you got to this one. I know you tend to review more mainstream films than independent and smaller budget ones, so seeing this here was a nice surprise. Not that you're like to consider my suggestions, but the film I'm most eager to see you review is Hong-Jin Na's 'The Wailing', a Korean horror-mystery that's a whirlwind of genres. I was lucky enough to catch it in theaters near Philadelphia, and I have to say it's my favorite film of 2016 thus far.
I've been waiting for this so long! It's been out for a like month in Australia which is so rare for independents, I thought it was hilarious and refreshingly original
Hey Chris, if you ever get round to reading this - Hunt for the Wilderpeople was adapted from a book entitled 'Wild Pork and Watercress' by the late Barry Crump, who was an icon in NZ. Sam Neill's Uncle Hec was inspired by Crump too, in fact. There was also a cameo later in the film by a man named Lloyd Scott, that if you ever get the chance, there was a series of hilarious Toyota Hilux TV commercials during the 80's, where both of them featured. I believe they're on UA-cam too if you search 'Barry Crump' 'Toyota Hilux' - something to that effect. They were quite entertaining watching them as a kid round Julian Dennison's age - just saying... :)
Hi Chris, love your channel. I have being going through your older reviews and may I suggest you making different groups for the movies you have reviewed (like A, B, C grades) so that we can look for recommended films other than A+ grade ones quickly. There are times when I was searching for missed gems but have limited time, like when I wanted to check out some older blu-ray discs in a shop, I need to fast forward your reviews to the end and see the grade. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching every reviews you've made but that would make our life easier. Keep up the great work! Cheers! Alex L.
Being a New Zealander, I'm honestly surprised at the reception this film has gotten. This film is full of cameos only Kiwis will get and that is what made the film to see. Great to see!!
If you could only recommend one movie out of this and Swiss Army Man, which would you recommend seeing in theaters? I know you gave Swiss Army Man a higher score but it seems like you really love both. I want to see both in theaters but I don't know if I will be able to

doesnt get enough love here in the U.S. tho 😭
Chris should definitely keep reviewing smaller movies
Its a small movie for America but when I visited New Zealand you couldn't go anywhere without advertising for the movie
Completely agree. I know I wouldn't have even batted an eye about this movie or, another prime example, Hush on Netflix if it wasn't for Chris.
Are you kidding? This is the SHIT in NZ it is the biggest movie, everyone has seen it where I live
Same in Australia!
Completely agree with Madwolf! I trust Chris' reviews and have never been disappointed from the ones he has recommended. Never would've looked twice at Hush - turned out to be one of the best watches, for me personally this year.

I'm an Irish Traveller (gypsy) and I got em mabey not all but I love the nz humour and we do a lot of hunting so we kinda worked em out eventually.
Good news, this director is making Thor:Ragnarok!
and bad news, he acted in green lantern 2011...ouch
+Ugrin Vuckovic Acted, not directed...
+Ugrin Vuckovic so did Ryan Reynolds. He didn't even need to redeem himself, but he still did
+Ugrin Vuckovic But his director credits have been very good. His movies were smash hits in NZ and also film festivals as well as critical praise.
+Joseph Su'a I do agree that he's a good director, never said he isn't 😊
No child gets left behind.
He'll know what it means.
I just finished watching this movie. I'll watch it again. I don't do that for many movies.
Ditto. More than Lord of the Rings...
Great to see this movie reviewed, this was an absolutely huge movie here in NZ and I'm glad to see it is loved outside of NZ to.
Nacho Libre is a very underrated movie. Also Chris if you liked this then you'll like Short Poppies.
"Get that corn out of my face"
+Zack Thomas Roper "Chancho. When you are a man sometimes you wear stretchy pants in your room."
Nacho Libre has some of the best quotes.
ANACONDA SQUEEZE
+OVO VO these are my stretchy pants. hahaha. such a good movie👍👍
Surprisingly enjoyed this movie as well. The direction, music and offbeat humor sort of reminded me of a wes anderson movie.
This is one of the main things that separates Stuckmann from Jahns to me, Chris does reviews of lesser films, maybe as he has more time or interest in these types whereas I get the impression Jeremy has more events to go to & does all the big named films, like them both btw so no hate
He wasn't comparing them competitively. He was just describing how their reviewing styles are different from each other.
this movie is *far* from being "lesser" in any way here in NZ
Stuckmann gets more into the technical aspects of a movie whereas Jahn gives more fun and casual preview; which is funny, because their clothing styles is the opposite: Jahn dresses like he is going to a formal event (with the exception of the Star Wars previews), and Stuckmann sticks with T-shirt most of the time.

Pretty big in Australia.
My wife went and saw it three times in the cinema without me. And now it's no longer in cinemas in Australia and I have to wait for the DVD. I'm so heartbroken
It's still showing in Brisbane, I saw it on Thursday. Are you sure no smaller theatres are still screening it near you?
Fly to New Zealand. Like all things great and Kiwi, we hold on to it for dear life...so its playing here and its been out since January...
Make sure you type the website correctly. There's a lot of other websites that try to copy the legit website so you can sign up with a credit card first before watching anything and it's not real.
looks like a gritty reboot of Up...
Its based on a book by Barry Crump who was a famous nz author back in the days :)
Hayley Ward what are his opinions on houses lifted by balloons?
LordSvzklx Barry Crump? He died in the 90's sadly, so who knows.
There is definitely a coincidental resemblance of the movie. But I think its better simply on a relational level with the characters ... but this could be because I'm from New Zealand
LordSvzklx Except this is way better
So this is basically a live action "Up", but with a plot twist: Russell and Mr. Fredrickson never made it out of the forest. lol
New Zealand... the Australian version of Canada. Also this movie came out already in AUS.
Which means we are nicer, and less stuck up :)
No I meant we make fun of NZ all the time.
hahahaha not very well though...

Watching this review in 2021. Your timing has greatly improved in the last 5 years.
Taika Waititi's movies are so underrated and unknown because I love What we do in the shadows and Eagle vs Shark
"One Caucasian man...well I don't know why they think you're Asian cos you're clearly white" XD
I live in a small ass town, with one theater and they only show mainstream movies. How could I change this??
buy it online when it comes out or go to a bigger theatre
Investing you prob cant or getting more people that want the same you want
Get a small business loan, contact distribution companies, open up an indie movie theater. Definitely sounds like there's a market for it in your town.
Make a lot of money and get a movie theater built for Indie movies.
Any idea how much money that would take??
Just watched this on Hulu. I love Jojo Rabbit and Thor: Ragnarok and this movie falls right in line. Taika is so good.

The Hunt for Zod's Snapped Neck
I know it's a reference to man of steel, but I don't get why people keep bringing this up.
+Jared Gorrell Chris did a Batman v Superman rewrite. In that rewrite, Batman says "Tell that to Zod's Snapped Neck."
+Jared Gorrell Boy, you got it all wrong. It's not a Man of Steel reference
