I did love the fact that in the end, Indiana was literally begging to be left in the past. And he was straight up knocked out to deny his request. It really feels like even the writers knew how much the studio was abusing the franchise.
Not to mention the fact that it's every archaeologist's dream to go back in time and see what things were like. It would have been a wonderful send off to let him live that dream. But no, we had to have this out of nowhere god daughter punch him out, drag him onto a plane, go back across the Atlantic, put him in a vehicle, drive him to his apartment, drag him back into his bed, contact his estranged wife, wait for her arrival and then wait for him to wake up with probable severe brain damage after being unconscious for so long.
of course they knew. If someone knows, then the writers. But we know they need the money from their job. But it's cool they can pull these.

A game that invokes nostalgia at every mention
I feel like it’s a common sequel trope to turn our once beloved hero’s into depressed, broken, former shells of themselves.
Just legacy sequels, since they're churned out by Wattpad contributors who want self insert characters who don't need a hero's journey.
And I'm frankly sick of it.
But Indy’s not really a former shell of himself in this movie. He’s out of his element when he retires in the beginning, but gets right back into the adventure and hunt for the artifact anyway.
Yeah, we’ve never seen Indy depressed before!

This movie should have been about Indy teaming up with Sallah and Short Round for one final adventure. It's amazing nobody came up with such a simple yet effective premise.
If production on this had started like a year later I imagine the studio would have insisted on Short Round being in it, but Quan’s comeback happened too late.

This movie is really good at making you nostalgic for older, better movies : the 80's Indy of course, but also the better time-travel ones (back to the future, T1&2) and even the better peplums/historical epics (Gladiator which is now 20+ years old)
Gladiator ALMOST joined the time travel films. Gladiator 2 was originally going to be Crowe traveling through time fighting in wars throughout history. No joke. Not sure what the script their filming is about, but they nixed the time travel.

Indy rode off into the sunset with his dad and two best friends, Marcus and Sala. The Holy Grail is still safe, guys! There were no other Indy movies after that. I've been a devout admirer of Indiana Jones since elementary school. He is a timeless hero who is worthy of a hero's end, not "elder abuse." Once gain, Honest Trailers does a better job at the movies than the movies themselves.
Exactly ! The Last Crusade was named LAST for a reason !!! The other movies don't count, they never happened...

Despite Crystal Skull’s reception, it gave Indy a proper ending. It actually gave him a fitting end to his whole journey. But I guess Disney and modern Lucasfilm didn’t want our hero to have a beautiful future so that’s why this movie exists. 😤
Indy got a happy ending in Indy 5 too
The unproduced Crystal Skull script actually gave Indy AND Marion an actual good ending. The finished movie did not.
From what I understand, it was Ford who really wanted this one to happen.

Had a lot of laughs with this one (that Wolfenstein pun was epic), but what the heck, I enjoyed a lot this last ride with Indy, got nuts with the back in time thing in the last part of the movie and cheered and applauded at the end with the last shot of the hat :)
The "He belongs in a museum" bit was certanly priceless and briliant. Had me dying. Such a nice call back to the original films, namely The Last Crusade.😀🤣🤣

1) I never understood why people complain about Indy doing nothing in Raiders of the Lost Ark. One of the bad guys flat out declares "We are merely passing though history, this IS history"
2) My favorite grizzled old man not believing in magic was from Batman Beyond. Terry, new Batman, is shocked that Bruce doesn't believe in ghosts and Bruce is like "No, I totally believe in ghosts, but this is just way too high school."
1)Pretty sure it's just an observation and not a complaint. Classic Fridge Logic. And sometimes a counter to people who consider him a hero in that movie. The response of "but he didn't do anything, how is he a hero?" is meant to make one think.
Well, it does diminish the impact of the story if the main character has no impact on the story.
Every time I see someone else fondly remember _Batman Beyond_ it unfortunately reminds me of the low but constant dread that the DCEU will attempt to do something (stupid) with it.
Finally, someone who also mentions that Batman Beyond did the legacy formula better, despite being a cartoon series from 24 years ago.
Still waiting for it and the rest of the DCAU to get the HT treatment, however.

Gotta admit: Harrison Ford looks incredible (shirtless scene) for an 80 year old not juiced up on HGH or something. He's always been in incredible shape, and you can tell that is really him.

So glad my man Indy finally got to play Age of Empires in the end, at least for a couple of minutes.

You've never heard of where ARCO got the idea for the solar generator tower w/ all the mirrors around it out in the Mojave before? Seriously? Geez, what're they teaching in school these days?..
I really think the movie should have ended with him staying in the past. When they started to set it up I thought it was a fitting way to end his story. Indie dedicated his life to protecting history, but in the modern world all he got in return was forgotten, but here he had a chance to live amongst the history he loved so much. But in the end they played it safe and said he made it home safe. I feel like this describes most of the movie, they had they potential for something great, but ended up making something that was only good enough.
The movie should have ended after a completely different movie.
"And Indiana Jones lived happily ever after. The end!"

Indy living in the past would’ve been a depressing way to go out. He would never reunite with his friends and family again, so no. It was great that he got back to where he needed to be.
The movie should have ended after the first 15 minutes.

I mean, I loved crystal skull. It reminded me of a good time in my life. When my father was still alive and we were able to see it together. I miss that era of my life so much. Crystal skull will always have a place in my heart.

Hey now, Boyd Holbrook makes up for everything by being one of THE best characters on The Sandman.
I put him in the boat of often being underutilized instead of outright forgettable. I personally quite remembered and liked him in "Logan" and really liked his word in "Vengeance" from last year too.

Did anyone else notice that the movie kept getting the timing for the theme song swell wrong? It has always been used to punctuate the moment of excitement when Indy does something spectacular, or escapes from a situation in a highly improbable way, but this movie kept throwing it in at seemingly random times. It's almost like they knew the music made the audience feel something, but didn't understand that it was supposed to work in combination with the action, not independent of it.
The end credits ought to be a crime against humanity...
That's something people have noted about the use (or abuse) of legacy John Williams music in Star Wars lately--it's not used to support the action on-screen, it's used to give you nostalgia.
Interesting observation. Is that John Williams’ choice though? Or is it disney that is forcing the familiar theme to be tacked onto those scenes ?
Agreed, although John Williams is in his 90s at this point, so it's not that surprising. He's quite a bit removed from that incredible run of Star Wars-Superman-Empire-Raiders over just four years. I'm guessing they brought him back for a last hurrah in the same way they did Ford, but honestly they should have gone with somebody more current (read: younger), and just interweaving the Raiders fanfare in key moments.

If they wanted to actually continue Indie with a different character, they should have brought the actor for Short Round back, he's been a stunt coordinator in Hollywood for a while... and have HIM be the snarky type he was in the old film. He's even got face/name recognition atm due to Everything, Everywhere, All at Once.

Say what you will, but I thought that the first 15 minutes of this movie was incredible. The scenes of him walking through the Nazi train were great, culminating in him showing that his uniform has bullet hole in the front and back. I cracked up so hard at that part.
right but then the rest of the movie fails so hard u forget about it and we are still left unhappy overall
True. I despise this movie, but the WW2 scene was great, pure fun action / adventure. Made me wish Lucasfilm just recast Indy with a younger actor and made an Indy adventure in the WW2 era. In KotCS they hinted that Indy had a ton of adventure n WW2, so they could have made bunch of movies in that time period.

I watched the movie. The thing I am most impressed with is the parade scene. I don't know how they do it! So stunning and brings back a lot of memories.
Interesting, for me all the New York stuff around the parade and the Morocco part were atrocious. It only started to get a proper Indiana Jones film after they left Morocco for Greece.

Thank you for pointing out the "I don't believe in magic" line. If anyone has cause to 100% believe in magic it's Indiana frikkin' Jones.
Three of the examples were religion, not magic. Ark, Grail, Sankara Stones. So Indy should definitely believe in a God.

Logan (the movie) is not like this one: it actually is based on a real comic storyline, and it never allowed Wolverine to be humiliated or embarrassed or owned in his own movie.
On the contrary, it gave him the sendoff he actually deserved and everyone can remember fondly.
Honey have you never seen an Indiana Jones movie before? He's constantly failing forward and being "embarrassed" by the bad-guys being a step or two ahead of him until the end.
All I can ask for is that the studios learned something from this. That being said, moviegoers' standards are at an all time low, even this movie has its vociferous defenders
