  • This is a tutorial on how to change your watch strap using basic watch repair tools. In this video I will step you through the basic action of changing your watch strap.
    For this video I am using my Seiko Presage (see review link below) and swapping the leather strap for a rubber dive strap. As a bonus, the end of this video has some on the wrist shots of the Presage on the dive strap and some quick thoughts on the combination.

    Great how to video. Yes these can be trying and take patience and being careful of not scratching your watch.

      Thanks. I was referring to your vid since it looked like you might have marked it slightly? Perhaps just tricky lighting and no markings at all. This gives me hope that the tool doesn’t mark up against the watch body as you apply the necessary pressure to release the collar. Thx again

      @@labalo5 I've re-watched the video and checked the actual watch (it is a constant in my collection) and there are no scratch marks on the back of the watch. In the video I think it's a thumbprint that is catching the light, but there are no scratches on the back of this watch.
      To better answer your concern, I have noticed over the years that sometimes inside the lugs where the spring bar meets the hole you can scratch that inner surface if you partially pop the spring bar then drag it across the inside. You'd never see these scratches unless you took off the strap.
      Changing a strap is a semi-risky time and you can easily scratch the watch. I've done it a few times where I've been trying to catch the spring bar but then slip my hand. Luckily if you do it from the back you hide the scratches from normal view. I recommend practicing on a watch you are more comfortable risking a scratch on, or you could always bring the watch to an jeweler if you want to be sure it will be done correctly.
      Let me know if that answered your concern! Thanks for watching and comment :)

      @@OntheWrist I ordered a presage (4R35-04A0 SRPE41J1) the negroni cocktail time) and I would like to change out the strap to a steel one. Will any seiko 20mm steel strap work? Id like it to have the curved ends on the strap to fit snuggly but am afraid of buying the wrong one. Any help would be great!

    • @OntheWrist
      @OntheWrist  3 роки тому

      That looks like a spectacular watch! I love that it is a more compact size than the regular cocktail time.
      As for the steel strap, I would say it is unlikely that just any Seiko bracelet will work. The watch you ordered is a different case height (11 vs 14mm) than the existing Presage models or any of their dive watches. That may change how the curved ends fit onto the watch. I did some googling and couldn't find a definitive answer. It might be that the difference in case height doesn't make a difference, but I don't have all the dimensions to make a definitive call.
      Your best bet may be to bring it to a Seiko authorized dealer, or a jewelry store that sells Seiko and has a watch smith, and ask them to swap one of the other Presage bracelets onto your watch to check the fit. That would be the easiest way to find out of that curved end fits with your particular model.
      Good luck!

     @Grey Rigorism I moved the comment out here so others can see the answer more easily.
    Original comment "sorry to bug ya with another question, but do you think a straight ended steel strap would look ok on it? Masters in time says it should fit. Just not sure how a flat ended strap would look on a non dive bezel watch to hide the spaces."
    Edit: Realized you may have been talking about a regular steel bracelet with a flat end. A regular stainless bracelet without the angled lug at the end would be something you could try, but if you are really worried about the gap between the flat end and the case I think you might not like it. You could try going to a local watch shop and asking them to put one on it, if you like it you could buy it there. I'd call first to see if they have one.
    Alternatively you could try a mesh bracelet. It is not typically to my taste (but who am I to talk after putting a dive strap on a Presage), but it is certainly done on non-dive watches. You'll want a finer mesh, for example look at this Tissot: Heritage Visodate Automatic Silver Dial Men's Watch T019.430.11.031.00. There will be a gap between the watch and the bracelet because the strap attaches with a regular spring bar and there is no end link to mate up against the watch case, similar to a regular leather strap. However this is how they are designed to look.

      I believe I have found a presage that is roughly the case thickness and 20mm lug width. If my presage is 11.8 and 20mm and the presage model I'm looking at is 11.6 and 20mm wouldn't that hypothetically be a fit? Sorry for bugging ya just hard to go find a seiko dealer right now haha

    • @OntheWrist
      @OntheWrist  3 роки тому

      The previous presage model has a case thickness of 14.5mm and a lug width of 20mm. Using those dimensions might help, but if you want the bracelet to sit closely up against the case you really do need an end piece made to fit the watch specifically. If you can't find a Seiko dealer, you could always buy a bracelet online, try and install it, and then return it if it doesn't fit. You'd have to be very careful not to scratch the bracelet, but that might be a good option.
      Alternatively, I think one of the mesh bracelets would look quite nice on the presage. The mesh bracelets have a straight ending, so no need to worry about anything but lug width.
      Good luck either way!

    Wouldn't it make sense to tape off the backs of the lugs just to be extra certain that you don't scratch the metal?

    • @OntheWrist
      @OntheWrist  2 роки тому

      This is a good suggestion. I've tried it in the past with varying success. If you have any force because your trying to get the spring bar in, a single layer of something like scotch tape won't provide significant protection but it can help a little. Have you tried it with positive results?
