How a 125 m/h (200 km/h), 9-car Super Voyager destroys the tranquility of Northallerton - Fly-by -
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 жов 2024
- Except áll those 125 m/h trains that fly through Northallerton, what I love so much about the station is the tranquility in between: The birds chirping, and above all the classic music played constantly between station announcements.
These two aspects of the station however make for a extreme contrast with one another, as the music plays on and the birds keep chirping right through the upcoming storm that is any of the 125 m/h or 200 km/h services that make way through the station.
For today; one of the more spectacular ones, as the 9-car Cross Country (Super) Voyager DEMU sets come crashing down at us. The Voyager is actually one of the last full diesel powered sets to be seen flying through under the wires at Northallerton on the ECML. The set is however here to stay for a while, unlike the older HST sets still operated by XC... Enjoy those while you can, as they'll be retired in October this year!
For now, I hope you enjoy! 🍀

American here: Before you complain about how loud the train is, please consider that the alternative is a massive highway that makes non-stop noise rather than a loud train that only occasion comes by.
As another American, be glad you actually have trains that can take you to a smaller village. That does not exist here. And if you want a train to a big city? Best of luck dealing with the catastrophe known as "Amtrak". Like the OP said, it is cars or nothing here...
And the train is electric! The highway would have you breathing some nice diesel exhaust along with the constant noise.
@@SmackyTheB3AReven though the line is electrified, this train is diesel powered. Look again, no pantographs making contact with the overhead wire anywhere.
As another American, you guys have a decent higher-speed rail. We don’t. We have the Acela (if you live in the Northeast) or Brightline (Florida or Nevada). HSR is not coming to America any time soon, and the California HSR program is working at a snail’s pace. Sure, that train was diesel, but at least you guys have the capacity to be electric. America doesn’t have the luxury, only if you live along corridor services.
@@imfunniguy3744 speaking as a Brit, it’s like the lead up to D-Day in here! Americans all over the place. Hershey Bars, chewing gum and Nylons next!
Another thing I’ve noticed with the noise is that American trains are huge noisemakers, constantly on their horns and bells clanging. In the uk and Europe it’s the complete opposite.
The classical music playing between announcements at the train station is the most British thing ever 😭
I think it's brilliant, though. 😂 Over here you just get bombarded with announcements of all sorts
@@TrainsbyM Been all around the railway network extensively in the UK and never heard this in my life before... must be something they are only doing at Northallerton to disuade young people from hanging around on the platforms because granted, there isn't much to do in a small town like Northallerton.
It's also not the 'most british thing ever'... classical music is NOT a big thing here at all. In fact its arguably a bigger thing in America these days (I know because I currently study classical music at university)
Indeed I was correct. see the press-release from the Northern rail media office from the 26th April 2023 titled 'Northern to use classical music to 'Handel' anti-social behaviour at stations' This is a very recent development, and something really not good for trainspotters.
@@Nooticus mkay calm down just a joke… 💀

So would I but unfortunately unless you are a solo traveller, in this country the cheapest form of transport is nearly always the car. Trains are shockingly expensive.
@@shazmeister2005the depressing truth. It costs me £40 to drive the 6 hour round trip to my boyfriends, and costs £90 and about 8 hours to get just to the nearest town to him by train. I wish it was economical to ride instead of drive, this country is fucked.
@@chrisogrady28 oh man, do not come to the USA if you like trains
The air turbulence at the join between the two train sets has to be experienced.
Completely turned over the air turbulence between the first and second unit!
you big time know what youre talking about
Still a LOT quieter than a highway like we'd have in North America.
209.5m long train takes 15.13s (including reaction times for stopwatch use) at 0.25x playback speed so 3.7825s at normal playback speed. 209.5m/3.7825s = 55.38m/s = 199.368kph or 123.9mph.
That's sorta what I calculated as well! Thanks for the math. 🙏🏼
And it destroyed the tranquility. Does that bump speed up or down? 😅 Just kidding. Neat -- trains at speed. Very good. Rewind 4x. 👍👍👍
I lived alongside the Birmingham/London mainline in the days of steam. The modern trains are quieter & much clearer than the steamers. Washing did not go out on days the wind blew across the tracks toward the gardens.
@@davecooper3238 i can only imagine. Must be quite a bit less practical, but everso romantic at the same time. 🥰
@@TrainsbyM Because wind direction effected the day they could get their washing done. My mother & the neighbours did not see steam as romantic.
Trains; beautifull when they are slow, exciting when they are fast. :)
Couldn't have said it better!!
As an American I would like to know what that thing was that went faster than a car on the ground?
It puzzles me time and time again...
A stunning train capture !!
Thanks, Rupak!! 🥳
The Hitachi train sets used in England for overland high speed rail use diesel electric, batteries, and overhead electrical. This allows them to serve areas there isn’t overhead wiring. I rode a train from Oxford to the London last week; the Oxford branch isn’t electrified, but after the first stop on the main to London, you could clearly hear the pantographs go up, and the diesels stayed at idle while at high speed to Paddington station. As an American, the rail system in England is amazingly efficient, both overland and the tube system which I know very well now. We are very behind in our infrastructure in America. Although we did pass a coal fired electrical plant at one point.
Coming myself from a country (The Netherlands) where literally every main line is electrified, and where the main operator, and my employer for that matter, NS only has electric stock, I'd love to have a few of those bi-mode trains. Then again I'm an avid diesel enthusiast, and cherish whatever diesel-powered trains are left in the world. 😁
The UK rail network is a fucking mess. The only reason that it looks effective in comparison to the US is because the US rail network is literally on the cusp of total collapse
There's a video showing that on UA-cam.
I'd say it "interrupts" rather than "destroys" -- and as several of my fellow Yanks here have mentioned, we have reason to be very jealous of you having to worry about such interruptions.
Hahaha well, I'm just as foreign to the country as you are, just a bit closer... 😜 We don't have these kind of fly-by's at our platforms!
I don't think the Train approaching Platform 2 had any intentions of stopping either
Would have been one heck of an emergency brake. 😂
as an american i can promise you this is better than a highway and or the 8 lane road that goes to the highway
Definitely agreed!
Love it. Just wish the UK had Shinkansen speed trains going through stations.
Thanks!! That would be insane!
I make frequent trips to Shanghai, and I always use the Maglev to and from the airport. One of the fastest trains in the world, and the trip only costs £5.
What a beautiful way to have tranquility paused :)
I'd say!!
I mean, at least you have high-speed rail! Hell will freeze over before we get anything like that here in the states...
Hahaha, well Brightline is getting quite "up to speed" ofcourse. 😂
Well, they cannot tilt (only XC units), so they are restricted to 110 MPH along the WCML.
This is not the WCML, this is the ECML.
Super fast
@@MPDTransport Sure was!! 💨
No EMU?
Oh, there are enough there if you want to see them, but some high speed diesels as well, like this one!
What I don't understand is this: Why, if you like the chirping of the birds so much (like I do!) do you stand on a platform of a high speed rail line?
It seems to me that If you want to board a train, or enjoy the sound and feeling of a high speed train passing by (like many people do..) you choose to stand on a train platform, while if you want to enjoy the chirping of the birds you go for a walk in a park or a nature reserve?
Honestly I love both, and the absurd contrast that is born as soon as the two intertwine. Obviously I love high speed (diesel) rail, as I came all the way from The Netherlands to Sheffield, and making a day out of it to visit Northallerton station a good 2 hours, single journey, away from Sheffield!
As it is diesel electric, why doesn't it have a pantograph to make use of electrified portions of the line, as show here? Bonkers.
Well it's over 20 years old, but there actually once was a proposal to add a pantograph housing car to these units. As a diesel lover, I'm happy they decided not to go through with it... 😇
Jesus that was a nice catch there 😂😊
Thanks!! 🤩
Classic, both other trains on the display are running late. Welcome to Britain.
Hahaha, it wasn't too bad. I've seen worse.. And that day there was a collision with a person at Darlington just a few hours prior to this footage, that really shook up the ECML ofcourse.. 😕
A British train travelling at full speed. Enjoy it while it lasts, it only happens once a decade or so.
I captured quite a few of them.... 😶
how did you play the classical music in between the announcement?
Hahaha I did not! That is actually played at the station continuously between announcements. 😁
@@TrainsbyM Hahah wow! At least there's something to listen to while you wait for your train.
@@Michael-123 Yes, it makes for quite the joyful experience, while I do suspect there might be another reason as to why they play the music here all the time!
@@TrainsbyM Apparently it's to stop young people vandalising stuff. Do you reckon it plays 24/7?
@@Michael-123 Ah! Well I reckoned it was to help ease people who are in a very dark place, since all of the Samartin posters found around the station, but I didn't expect this! I honestly couldn't tell, but it would make sense then. 😁😁
wait, that music wasn't added in? They actually play it?
They actually play it! What I've understood out of the comments is that it's intended to counter vandalism at the station. I would also say it is to influence those who are at a very dark place, seeing that the station sees a lot of 125 m/ph trains...
Also contrast with American trains that constantly blow the horn and ring their bells.
Yup, I definitely prefer them without. Those Americans have some very beefy engines, but you can hardly hear those over those horns and bells. 😕
Amazing!
Thank you, Martin!! 😊
In the Netherlands, we have trains that go this speed as well and scare the hell out of you when they come by…Except they’re about 20 carriages or more so thet just keep. On. Going.
In case you haven't read up on me; I actually am a Dutchman ánd a driver for the NS. with the exception of the HSL we don't go any faster than 145 km/h, which is 55 km/h slower than this; let alone diesel stock rarely ever making this speed. The length of our current day stock maxes out at 15 cars in regular service, which isn't seen anymore for the past 10 years, where 13 cars (of ICMm) now is the max. Granted those 15 cars were 1,5 times longer than the regular maximum length of UK trains, though... 🤭😁
@@TrainsbyM Oh yes my bad I should’ve specified! Mostly talking about Thalys (RIP) and Eurostar since I frequent Rotterdam Central. I was way overestimating the carriage numbers though, my bad!
@@NeonCats All fine man! (Or girl, I don't know😁) And in all fairness, the carriages of the Thalys/TGV are ofcourse like half the size of our classic stock. Nonetheless part of the thrill in this is ofcourse capturing trains dírectly at the platform at these kind of speeds. We're still in the process of testing whether or not 160-200 would be safe directly at the platform (Kampen Zuid as a test location)!
we had a train that came though my station at 07:06 every morning on my old commute, i wouldnt always be at the station that early so whenever i was and i have my headphones in it was always make me jump. i was never in any danger as id be more aware if i wasnt sat on a bench but i can see why they have warning about putting the brakes on your pram
That's definitely sensible. 😂 From my experience as a driver in The Netherlands, I know all too well how people can get startled, especially wearing headphones. And we "only" do a maximum of 90 mph, over here. 😁
Can we get a version with a sound pressure level meter? What's shown here appears to be almost silent with some wind rush, not some giant ground shaking diesel electric that can be felt approaching from miles away.
Trains going at this speed are exactly super quiet until they pass by because they go so fast they push the airwaves to the side as they travel so the sound gets distorted and its quiet right until it passes by
@@rankedcitizen Sound wave radiate in all directions, they get compressed if the vehicle making them is following them, that's why we have the term "Doppler Effect". They are not pushed aside.
Great video. Love Northallerton good there for trains at speed. 👍
It was a great experience, visiting the station! Definitely up for a future visit, whenever I visit The UK again!

Love the class 221, it's a shame that avanti west coast is replacing them
Great to see some love for the (Super) Voyager units. These are such great units, that, as a Dutchman, I have often wondered what the standard for the British must've been that they receive so much criticism. With the exception of our ICMm, I'd trade in any of our trains for these!
It is indeed a shame the Avanti ones are being replaced, by the way; yes!

Well, it's loud, but only lasted a few seconds.
And considering the train does the full 200 km/h, it could have definitely been a lot louder!
Yrah "destroys" the tranquility for four seconds.

It is 125mph or 125 mi/h, not 125m/ph.
The p is "per" which is the / character.
So 125 m/ph is 125 miles per per hour which is obviously wrong as it contains two "per".
125mph is correct as this expands to: 125 miles per hour.

Northallerton is still not as loud as it’s neighbour RAF Leeming

I don't think that is 200km/h, because British rules require a 1.25m protective zone for up to 160km/h and 2m for above this, which isn't the case here.

Complaining about the "noise"? You need to experience the world more
Who is this targeted at? I love the noise.
That is effectively 9 individual units, each doing 125, joined together. Not particularly clever. Every coach has a throbbing motor under it which is why I personally hate travelling by Voyager. An HST achieved the same with two power units. Trouble was the archaic drop window opening often meant the sound proofing and air conditioning was ruined as they were rarely closed up again. Trying to get fuel consumption figures for locomotives and powered units is as difficult as the old adage “what does a London cab driver earn?”
So you complain about the noise ? Go to the nearest airport ... You should be thankful of having high speed rail to get to places faster and more confrontable, without waiting in traffic jams or going trough airport security.

I recently discovered that although British trains don't have the fastest top speeds, they DO have some of the fastest average speeds in Europe. In my opinion, fastest top speed is not always the most important thing to have.
@@blotski Fair point!
It's just a smokey old planet killing diesel, running on tracks with the electric overhead pickup no less. Bonkers. Scrap it and get proper electric trains instead.
You do know that trains use little to no fuel in the UK when using diesel. Plus its not that easy to replace old rolling stock, cuz of money, route coverage, reliability, and some other things. Yes diesel does damage the planet, but cars produce more emissions per mile, whilst a train might not need to use its engines for a while as they can coast for miles. Also, what do you do on the unelecrified lines, we can't stick catenary all over it, the locals would kill network rail.
That is why you can't replace stock which are designed to reach 125 just by diesel power.
બસ
Yeah!!!
Dont agree with that if you don't like the noise dont be a train fan
I love the noise, who are you talking to?
Not to be a killjoy, but these 221s aren’t capable of 125mph, because their tilt got removed when they moved from Virgin
they all are still capable of 125mph, it's only in areas which non-tilting trains are restricted where they have to slow down
As stated by the second comment; the tilting capacities do not influence the maximum speed of the sets as far as I know, other than at corners allowing higher speeds for tilting trains, as found on the WCML! Pretty sure if you run the math on this passage you'll get a number eerily close to 200km/h / 125m/ph. ☺️
On the West Coast Mainline Non Tilting trains are restricted to 110 mph but on the East Coast Mainline Non Tilting trains are allowed to do 125 mph as the the ECML is much straighter than the WCML
