That is such a neat hike with the thermal features and wild flowers. What a picturesque view of heart lake too. Thanks for the virtual view Park Junkie.
Thank you so much for another wonderful Yellowstone adventure! Glad that you finally gave yourself some well deserved extra comfort. There is no shame in DEET my friend! Look forward to the next one!
Hi David! I did the hike 42 years ago! I'll never forget the summer of 1980, working at Lake Hotel, and meeting so many great people, making friends and hiking throughout the Yellowstone and GT area - Love how PJ brings all those memories back!
Really loved the journey up and back. The over stay at Heart Lake was nice also. Thanks so much for taking us along with you. Always enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing
You bet! That trip has been on my list for a while, nice to finally get out there, but I really wish I had connected it to the South Boundary Trail for a trip down the Snake River!
Love the views of Yellowstone! The Heart Lake area looks really beautiful. New sub here and big likes. Look forward to watching more on your channel! 😍😍👍
Simply great video, beautiful views from atop Mt. Sheridan. Your video brought back memories when I did the hike in the summer of 1980. Back then, the fire lookout was manned, and I remember we brought some magazines, a book and some candy for the park ranger manning the lookout. Surprised that you can hike there solo, back then it was a mandatory minimum of 4 hikers had to be in your party. Thank you for doing these videos, it brings back so many great memories from working and hiking throughout the Yellowstone and Grand Teton are during that wonderful summer!
That would have been such a cool gig back then. I haven't found any of these old structures to be manned anymore. I could easily spend a week up there! Thanks for watching!
The view with you sitting at the lookout looking out on Heart Lake looks like you're on top of the world. Though I bet the water was chilly it must have been awesome to sneak in the quick swim.
In 1973 I had a conversation with a ranger stationed in the “patrol cabin” on Mt Sheridan when it was used for a fire lookout. A single ranger would be stationed there for a season and supplies would be dropped off every few weeks. They had a small stool, with glass insulators on the legs, which they were instructed to stand on to avoid being injured by lightening when the station was in the midst of a thunder storm. I suspect few lasted the season.
Were they issued brown pants? Nothing scarier than having the flash and boom happen at the same time, lol... There's a place in Mesa Verde, it's probably a fire lookout. I remember seeing a big sign on it warning of "extreme lightning hazard". Made me look around even though it was a sunny day, lol. Oh, the signs on how to fight off a cougar didn't fill me with joy, either. (The puma kind. Not the Miami kind.)
That would be a cool gig, I assume the cabin is fairly safe in a lightning storm, I mean, it's been up there for a while and it has grounding wires all over it...
Thank you Todd C for another wonderful adventure/hike in the Yellowstone back country. Your videos are always so beautiful with all the flowers and the view from the top of Mt. Sheridan! Even the wild life that was not wildlife, was great. I thought it was a moose at first look. Thank you also for the informative camping instructions in bear country. I am amazed you are doing that camping alone in the wild. How cold was the lake water? I still feel wet and cold from your dive. I am waiting for your next adventure, especially if you go to explore the Grand Teton. Thanks again for what you do for us. 🙂
The lake was actually pretty warm. I didn't get chilled in there, but I had just finished that hike to the summit. I didn't do it in the evening prior, cause I didn't wanna get chilled before bed...
Yeah. One has to appreciate that he has to do all of his approach and departure hiking shots twice. And he sometimes does it over particularly difficult terrain. (That's what a hiking partner is usually good for, lol.)
This was one of your best videos. (Haven’t watched everything produced). Have always wanted to hike to Heart Lake. Not to be! Those days are gone for ever. Thanks for taking me up to Mt Sheridan.
Todd C...i just love your productions Dude...awesome...i still cant beleive the near grizzly attack video another 2 seconds...dont forget to pray..keep up your good works Todd C and thanks
Great video. The views from Mt Sheridan were spectacular. Thanks for sharing your journey. Just made reservations to stay in Yellowstone next July 2023.
In the middle of EVERYWHERE for a GREAT view of the southern half of Yellowstone!!!!! Thanks AGAIN for the trip of a LIFETIME! so says Sojourner Levi god of the wine(Dennis Levi Nowotny in Hebrew)
Just another hike in paradise, eh? What a great way to spend a summer, being able to have so much quality time in Yellowstone. Are those your stream fording Chacos I see strapped to the side of your pack? I'm a little surprised they don't have bear boxes for food storage there. I'll bet you were ready for a hearty meal (a nice steak, maybe?) after you got back!
Really enjoyed this one. So peaceful. Also got a kick out of “Better living through chemistry”. One of my favorite phrases, but now I have to explain it’s origin to people. Hope NPS maintains the old fire lookout on Mt. Sheridan and it doesn’t get hit by lightening.
I didn't see any monarchs, but I did hit my head on a branch trying to film a different kind of butterfly... But I don't know what kind it was... It was a yellowish one. Looked cool!
If you want something that is not as harsh as DEET, but works as well as DEET, use Picardin based insect repellent. I've completely switched to Picardin. It works just as well against mosquitos and is better at repelling ticks.
Wow. Nice they had a cross beam between two trees for your food pack. Up in the BWCAW, we had to suspend it between two trees. PITA, lol. (You can't just suspend it from a branch, since a bear can climb a tree and still get to it...) And I always slept through it, but I understand there were always a couple of visitors to the campsite during the nights. Personally, I'd would have taken a travel fishing rod. Probably use a crankbait with barbless hooks. (At least I assume it's legal to fish in the lake.) Nothing wrong with DEET, though I probably would have still used a head net, and only used it on my hands and other exposed skin. Ever take a GPS to one of those USGS markers to see if it's accurate? I'm gonna do that the next time I see one. I'm gonna do the same thing if I'm ever at Four Corners again. 😁 Nice hike. Well established trail. Built by the CCC?
Well, most backcountry sites in Yell have either bear boxes or hang posts, cause you're correct, bears can climb trees... I wanted to take the ol fishing rod, but I found that I have misplaced my tackle box in my rig.... so I'm looking for that... Not sure bout the trail, but it's been there for a while! I haven't checked many of those usgs markers, but I have found those that I have checked to be pretty accurate. Some of those things have been around a long time.
Cool, not too much traffic out there... kinda thought I'd pass more people on the trail. Total humans encountered on the entire trip: 14 - one group of 6 and a few 2s...
So is that cabin at the summit all locked up? I was just at site 8H6 last week and I thought it was some sort of emergency shelter when I looked up there. How cool that there's a picnic table up there? The map also shows an outhouse, but I didn't see that in your video.
That is the Big Agnes, Helinox beach chair. It is fairly light, but a bit bulky. I really prefer it to sitting on the ground. The lumbar support is great!
No, but i've been seeing those on UA-cam. I saw Stan Mills using one in a video. Probably a no go for me at this point. I'd also probably stagger out of my tent and shock the $*#t out of myself in the dark of night!

Your videos and information sharing is first class. Really enjoy them. However you really need to cut your pack weight by half. For overnight or even 2 night I am around 20 lbs. Help those knees and shoulders enjoy as well. 😊
tray taking a bowl with you and when you get where you are going boil one cup of water then add 1/4 cup sugar let it cool and add 1 tsp of yeast. Put it about 20 feet from your camp and it will attract and kill all the mosquitos near you.
This might work, though I might try more than one bowl. You really don't need to boil the water if it's clean, just get it warm. What you're actually doing is creating carbon dioxide generators.
