I would have been shocked if they did. One of the easiest ways to manipulate people is via the media. Primarily news and social media. Generally speaking (and this has become much more so in recent years) People don't believe the truth. They believe what they want to believe and seek out news "stories" and social media posts that will reinforce their mindset. Even if it's as reliable as a Rolex with two "L" s. Another (effective) method is to misdirect. One way is to have the new outlets sensationalize things that are actually mundane. While everyone is worked up about nothing, something else happens that is barely reported on or ignored. If people catch on? So what. Society has the attention span of a kitten with ADHD. If something that should be important manages to get the attention of the masses, it won't for long. Remember Edward Snowden? People were furious at what the Intel sectors were doing. That lasted about a week until some celebrity did something stupid, then that had their attention because you know, priorities.

It will never cease to amaze me how many Americans cannot clearly make out the difference between fact and fiction. 🙄
Americans are among the most propagandized people in the world, so that's part of the problem. But where are you from? I've done a fair bit of social research and I've found many people in the world have big critical thinking gaps between determining fact from fiction. How many people know the root socioeconomic orientation of our society is unsustainable and needs to be structurally re-invented if we ever hope to have a healthy, sustainable future? How many know the lies and manipulation that come to us everyday through advertising, politicians and the corporate elites? How many know about the real technological potentials to create an abundance for all, locally, in direct democracy if we wanted to do that we could make poverty, politicians and debt obsolete? Not many know that, and that is by capitalist system design. George Carlin knew this too and tried to tell us.
The Republican mantra is:- Let's return to those bad old days when families were kept in poverty. Mothers birthed child after child and were old before their time! When children wore hand-me-downs and worn-out shoes, starved, no health care or state help. Yes, those were the Good old days when the Poor were kept in their place and the rich lived well!
And the minorities "knew their place and stayed quiet"...

Republicans have been trying to get rid of Social Security since it was passed out of the Congress and signed in to law by FDR in 1935. George W. Bush attempted to privatize Social Security at the beginning of his second term in 2005. Additionally, the Republicans have been trying to get rid of Medicare and Medicaid which were signed in to law by LBJ in 1965.

That’s what Trump plans to do… he wants immunity for his own crimes and he also wants to weaponize the judiciary and DOJ to jail his opponents without legitimate evidence of a crime. For real. The problem is that people are starting to trust their feelings more than their facts. As science comes out to prove more about everything people continually turn more to religion and Pseudoscience. They insist that if they don't know it for themselves to be true (ie having tested and experimented themselves) then they won't believe anyone with the real knowledge. Truth is being corroded by the idea of blind faith, and blind hope.
