I’m sorry to hear you are dealing with this much pain Gil. I’ve had to change seats out before and after coming in from a long ride my wife will give me a massage with a massage gun. I find that it may not help right away, but over the next day or so I can tell the difference. I had an older friend that picked up a Burgman 650 scooter to allow him to ride once he started having health problems. A few years back I picked one up as well and enjoyed it. I sold it, but if I’m ever in a position that having something like that might allow me to take short rides and still enjoy being on 2 wheels I’d do it in a heartbeat. I’m excited to see what you come up with.
Hey, i'm grateful for the opportunity to open my eyes every morning and face whatever I have to face that day. ADD moment here I just got my first bike wash ever! Stay tuned for an inside look.............
As a 56 year old rider that does the majority of his riding in hard off-road on a 2stroke KTM(but this also applies to touring). The single most import thing I do to enhance comfort and protect my body is regular exercise....I have a back injury from a motorcycle accident I had at 18 years old, If I don't do regular core training my low back will start acting up, causing discomfort on up to, "I can tie my shoe pain"... So I'm in the gym 3 days\week and I do core exercise 5 days\week... works like a charm👍. I can do 50miles of enduro, get a good nights rest, get up go to work and start my routine again.
Gil, you've got a good 15 more years to ride. As one has mentioned already, regular exercise is key. At the very least stretching does wonders. I'm 68 yo and ride a Road Glide Limited and although i deal with an occasional back pain, stretching helps a lot. Plus my bike is very comfortable for long distance. Enjoy your videos, keep em coming!!
Congrats Ron. Same age. Not close to giving up two wheels. When the sciatic affects me, I’ll do specific stretches and foam rolling. Ride a 22 Gold Wing DCT Tour airbag. As well, I make sure ATGATT. Many Safe travels.
64 here, and one thing that keeps me going is regular exercise helps a lot. I have said before that I’m actively thinking of downsizing my Wing to something lighter. Gear is one of my big priorities and my airbag jacket gives me peace of mind that just a regular jacket doesn’t. I saw a guy in his 70’s describe how he walked away from his accident because his airbag jacket, that was enough to sell me. Exercise and gear, maybe I will be done in my 70’s?
Great topic, G. I am a 56 year old ADV rider and I deal with regular back pain as well. Like a lot of us, HS football, wrestling, hockey and just being a dopey gym rat (lifting for max with the gym bros) took it's toll. The best cure I have found is keeping my weight down and staying active, with plenty of abdominal exercises (HIT, core, etc.). I have struggled with a bit of weight gain from COVID (like many of us) and not being as strict on my exercise regimen and sure enough, my back pain frequency has increased, so as of late I have been trying to be more disciplined.
Gil, man I feel ya... a couple years behind you, my issues is disc compression in my neck, for which a 4lb helmet doesn't help at all... My days on two wheels are numbered :( thanks for the content!
That’s a tough one for sure! May want to consider AGV and Schuberth helmets as a last ditch effort. Father Time catches up with us all so we make concessions.
Limited time here on Earth is right! I'm sure you can find a better seat and I bet heavily (if I could) that that will fix it for you. I've had sciatica due to neck and back injuries and walking helps a lot. Also finding the right mattress will help hugely as if you sleep on your side you need soft and sleep on your back you need a firm mattress. That actually is huge and very overlooked by folks. I got the GoldWing DCT because of you, and it suits me perfectly. I look forward to hearing your pain is resolved!
Today I had my best day in weeks, I started it by walking my dog for 2 miles followed by some light resistance and core training. I will adjust my Sleep number bed to a softer setting as i am a side sleeper> Thanks so much.
Sorry about the sciatica! That's no fun. I get twinges of it from time to time, but being on the bike makes me mostly forget about it when it DOES flare up. Exercise, pain meds, getting your doc on board to fix or mitigate the cause, that's what I'd recommend. Don't give up motorcycle riding until you absolutely have to - that's MY advice! I am not a doctor, nor a lawyer, but I played one on TV once... and I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night, so there's that :D
Man...I thank God I don't have any back issues. But my knees are feeling it. Not considering giving up riding no time soon, I'll just deal with the growing pains as the come.
That's what it is! We need a positive attitude to face upcoming challenges. My back is fine, it's the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in our bodies that runs down both legs to the toes. And my left one acts up. Who knows could be years of deadlifting and squatting in my thirties and forties with less than perfect form. Whatever the cause it's got to go.
Sodium Naproxen (Aleve) if you're going the OTC medicine route and have used Ibuprofen (Advil) and Acetaminophen (Tylenol) already with some limited success. Then there's various apparatuses for alignment support of the lower spine. A relatively newer on the scene device, but not a new idea concerning the sciatic nerve pressure point, that puts targeted pressure on the sciatic nerve below/back/side of the knee. One is the ”Be Active Brace" and there are similar devices. As you likely already know if you're looking for more permanent solutions vs just inflammation reduction or brain tricking/relearning through pressure points and/or brain chemistry changes (powerful scripts) it's MRI or CT Scan, likely w/contrast. The Laser Spine Institute or equivalent laser methods of nerve pathway obstructions/hindrances removal/alleviation. The traditional methods for nerve path clearing can leave scarring that may cause other neuropathy issues later. ✝️🕊️
@@GBeWinginIt No problem G. Yes a doctor that is, or knows, a spinal-issue specialist(s). Keep in mind regular x-rays are the first-line imaging step for seeing certain bone issues like fractures, dislocations, misalignments and narrowed joint spaces. MRI images are best for seeing soft tissues that an x-ray cannot. Things like spinal joint inflammation, nerve compressions, torn or detached ligaments, tendons, muscles and cartilage loss, or any of the various spinal degeneration issues. MRI imaging is better/safer than CT Scan imaging because there's no radiation and can be done as long as you don't have too much surgical-metal, e.g. pins, plates etc in the area of desired imaging. Otherwise that would then only leave the CT Scan imaging alternative. ✝️🕊️
Hey brother, first let me say I thought you were late 40s certainly not late 50s. You’re looking great. It was funny to listen to you describing your morning this morning, as mine went much the same. I grab the couch around 6 AM couple of Tylenol‘s, Cup or two of strong black coffee, then walk my dog for a mile or so, and finally felt a little better. I then hopped on my 1250 GS adventure rally I went for a spin 👍😃. I know this is getting a little lengthy here, but wanted to share with you. At 52 years of age, I sold my beloved victory cross country as my bulging discs and sciatic nerve pain in my right leg was so great that I didn’t trust myself riding anymore, certainly not with my wife on the back. Now at 58 years old (a month ago), I purchased my new motorcycle, I can promise you I thought I was done. however…I felt like something within me had died, and it was quite depressing. When you grow up, water skiing, knee boarding, bare footing, riding motocross, street riding, drag racing, etc. you end up with a lot of injuries and a lot of pain but I absolutely refuse to give in. So I continue to try to eat as healthy as I can, started stretching more, getting frequent chiropractic adjustments and massages. You’re not alone my friend, I suffer with you. PS should I mention my crazy tight and painful shoulders, middle back and neck…not to mention the tension headaches that come with it. ha ha.
Thanks for sharing I remember the good old days when I was 40, my eldest daughter is 38 😂. These days we focus on self care and appreciation for what we have, and what we have left. Thanks again.
Gil, you are doing great mate. I’m enjoying your content. I also have issues with sciatica. Luckily for me that riding my bike is the most comfortable way to sit down because of the shape of the seat on my inner thigh. This is in total contrast to the shape of the seat in the truck ( you people in the USA call Big Rigs ) that I drive daily for work. It tends to wrap up a little on the outside of the thigh and actually restricts movement. Yeah baby, that’s the way to get the feet tingling. On top of this I’ve also got relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis. Kinda gets the body aches happening and a lack of body strength. By law I must have a doctors certificate renewed every year to continue to be allowed to drive and ride. Ibuprofen is one of my best friends along with regular exercise. I’ll be 59 next week.
First off, there's a big difference between managing discomfort and actual medical issues. Discomfort... change seats, get different gear, or change the type of bike. All of which you have done over the years, so you're managing that just fine. As for the medical issues you've been dealing with for the past 15, that's a different ballgame and you should seek professional medical advice, which I'm sure you have done already. The minor pains I'm like you and manage with motrin and/or Tylenol 😊 Father time comes for us all, and my ultimate plan is to outride him for as long as I can.
Father Time takes no prisoners. Rest, meds, and time. Aaaauugh! It’s that last component time that’s all encompassing. I’ll continue to make adjustments and ride my motorcycle.
I'm not all that old but i've been dealing with back pain most of my life, there is different stretches that help me, while riding, taking more freaquent breaks helps. CBD oil taken daily and incorporating turmeric into my diet has also helped.
I turned 60 a few days ago I have been diabled since July 90 and fully disabled on SSDI since Jan 96 I have a messed up lower back with nerve damage my main thing when riding is all my bikes have a backrest, I custom make them if they are not available aftermarket. I look for bikes with a upright riding positions and I ride small displacement, under 600cc my sweet spot is around a 500. I have a Honda Shadow 500 from the 80's but really want a Honda CB500x as I live in Central America and want to do some traveling. Even with these requirements for a bike there are times I cannot ride, I cannot keep a bike upright it is how it is I did not ask to be injured but I have to deal with it.
Hi. I too have some experience with sciatica, which may be helpful to share . I absolutely do not want to preach and please forgive me if I'm telling you what you already know. I just want to do anything I can to help, yourself and other sufferers. Incidentally, I've recently retired from working in musculoskeletal healthcare, myself. I have occaissionally suffered, sciatica. Gil, I don't know the cause of your own sciatica, but I'll tell you about my involvement with sciatic nerve problems and perhaps there may be something in that, useful to you. I'm almost 65 years old I'm a life long bicyclist and a runner and I've ridden motorcycles, continuously, since I was a kid😀 . My last sciatica episode, lasted almost 4 months. It was caused by a bad landing when I jumped across a ditch while running and the sciatic nerve got severely stretched. Immobilising at the time, but, it turned out not to be a particularly difficult injury to deal with, compared to many/most sciatica causes, thankfully. So, as usual, I went to the doctor for some pain killers, but NOT for treatment. I went to the sports physio for treatment. Very, very, few doctors have the knowledge or experience to effectively treat sciatic nerve problems. Probably because of the many possible causes. Most sports physio therapists, at least know the basics and there are no shortage of physios who know a LOT. I'm sure you know there are many possible causes of sciatic pain and so, many different treatments are required. Which means that, it's easy to prescribe the wrong type of physio/exercise treatment, which often can make the sciatic problems worse or at least prolong the problems, indefinitely. It is the ''hands on'' individual precise diagnosis and management that is the most likely to bring the best outcome. Also the professional physio can instruct and guide the patient carefully, confidently, reassuringly and very importantly continuously. Whether the cause is spinal disc pressure, impingement from gluteus muscles or 101 of the other causes, often multiple, an effective treatment regime with or without surgery, in my experience, requires an experienced physiotherapist. That's my opinion, having spent a few decades on the surgical side of things. Best wishes to you sir.
Thanks so much for taking the time to share your experience and knowledge. I feel and believe it's from impingement from gluteus muscles. Sitting is unbearable accompanied by numbness all the way down the leg, even the foot and toe. I eliminated deadlifting and squatting and have found some relief at times.
