    A local radio station interviewed the punt returner and head coach. Here's a few interesting things that were said:
    1. The punt returner said he heard the Arkansas player close to him ask why they didn't blow the whistle.
    2. The head coach (Seth Littrell) came from North Carolina and said they tried to run this same play against Wake Forest (I believe) a few years ago and it would've worked had the officials not blown the whistle. He told the officials in the pre-game meeting they might run this play so watch for the fair catch signal.
    3. Prior to the kick, they told their offense and all of their players to stay on the sideline and not go onto the field even if it looked like the play was dead in case it worked.
    Go Mean Green!!!

    • @jordanharrison8769

      If you have to tell the official, prior to the play working, what to watch out for, how can they possibly expect college players to not be fooled. Absolute clown shit. Those refs should be fired for letting that abuse of the rules occur. And the coach should be fined for an unnecessary risk to player safety

    • @clintmurray9815
      @clintmurray9815 6 років тому +26

      The review would most likely have been initiated by the booth, not the refs. Always a good idea to review a trick play, especially a scoring play.

    • @clintmurray9815
      @clintmurray9815 6 років тому +16

      A possibility is that they reviewed it to be certain the receiver didn't make an illegal fair catch signal. A legal signal is hand above the head and waving back and forth at least twice. If there had been an illegal signal the ball would have been dead at the spot. His hands did move prior to the catch, but no higher than his waist. Obviously they didn't rule that an illegal signal.

    • @clintmurray9815
      @clintmurray9815 6 років тому +10

      They can, and they do. You do not want your trick play whistled dead, or flagged. Vanderbilt did it before they ran "Sneaky Pete" against Kentucky in 2015. www.tennessean.com/story/sports/college/vanderbilt/2015/11/18/vanderbilt-told-sec-office-refs-trick-play/75998748/

      He's not really taking advantage of a "rule." A "fair catch" is closer to a play or strategic action, like taking a knee or sliding, so refs are aware to look for it. That's why players are trained to "keep playing until you hear the whistle." This was more a failure by Arkansas, not tackling him and knocking the ball loose.

      The real question is would one of the players been flagged for unnecessary roughness if he had plowed through the returner. We all know the answer would be a yes. The rules were exploited, plain and simple. Actions like that can lead to a game getting out of hand and having consequences that can affect an unfortunate player's future.

    • @CoachAndrews
      @CoachAndrews 2 роки тому +2

      Exactly... We've seen numerous cases of guys getting flagged for hitting a player who has "given himself up." The returner-- fair catch or not-- clearly looks like he's given himself up, causing the coverage team to pull up which is exactly what they're training players to do in today's game..
      I appreciate the execution and all the practice that had to go in getting it down, but it's definitely cheap given how the game is called today.

      Fabian Taveras so you're telling me that if Kansas beat Arkansas, it would be because Arkansas isn't good, and not because Kansas is just better? Granted Arkansas isn't the team that can defeat Bama this year, but I think North Texas could be the team that can surprise college football. I think they can really could be the team to go to a New Years six bowl and compete against teams. Last year it was UCF, the year before was Western Michigan, and the year before that was Houston. Nobody gives anyone of these group of 5 teams credit for actually playing well. Mason Fine is a really good QB, he did really good at Locust Grove as the starter throwing for over 4000 yards his Senior year. I got North Texas going undefeated if they can get past FAU this year. If they do go undefeated, they most likely will play in a NY6 bowl. Or quite possibly the Playoffs (If the committee doesn't want to be a bunch of assholes and give them a chance)

      @@samsignorelli What he did was legal but at the same time it's a little unfair given the pressure defensive players are under in today's football to avoid penalties and getting thrown out of a game. Now what happens when a defensive players assumes that there was no definitive fair catch signal made and he blasts a receiver? One of the most dangerous plays has always been recieving a punt because the player is typically standing still and looking up so it's better to not make the situation even more dangerous by pulling a stunt like this because now defensive players are going to see this and instead of pulling up off the gas they will keep their foot on it. Trick plays like this are great for highlight reels but they can eventually result in someone getting seriously injured.
